ast week’s Kearny police blotter began with a report about a woman who allegedly used her 13-year-old niece to try to shoplift an electronics item from Walmart.

Today, we lead with another Walmart incident, this one involving a man who reportedly fled with a stolen RCA tablet — and left his 9-year-old son behind.

At 2:30 p.m., June 2, Lt. John Taylor and Officer Richard Poplaski responded to the store, where security had confronted the man while he and the child were exiting the store. Police said the suspect, later identified as Gary Felton, 53, of Newark, fled the premises — without the boy — jumped into a black Cadillac and drove away. [Note: Unlike last week’s incident, in this case the child was not impli-

cated in the alleged crime.]\ Police said Taylor spotted the Caddy leaving the area and stopped it, and Officer Jordenson Jean, on off-duty uniformed detail at Walmart, told the lieutenant that he recognized Felton as a past arrestee. A warrant check reportedly revealed that he had five: Kearny, shoplifting, $250 bail; East Orange, driving while suspended, $350; Newark, DWS, $300; and Irvington,

Distracted drivers, you have been warned TRENTON – N.J. Attorney General Christopher Porrino and the Division of Highway Traffic Safety announced last week that two months after unveiling a rebranded #77 program, designed to combat distracted driving, the state has received more than 1,000 calls reporting such drivers on state roadways.

The #77 program, first instituted in 1995 to combat aggressive driving, was expanded in April to deal with a significant increase in deaths on N.J. roads — 562 in 2015 to 603 in 2016 — due in part to the burgeoning numbers of distracted drivers.

The new initiative opened up #77 to callers reporting drivers using cell phones or otherwise driving distracted.

In addition, the State Police have sent letters, where possible, to those who were reported.

The letters note that using a

hand-held cell phone to talk or text while operating a motor vehicle is illegal in N.J., warn that the recipients’ vehicles have been spotted being driven dangerously or by a distracted motorist and inform them of the penalties if caught by police: For the first offense, a fine of up to $400; second offense, up to $600; third, up to $800 and license suspension of 90 days and three points on your license.

Also: “If you or the driver of this car are involved in a crash that injures or kills someone else, and it is determined that you were in violation of this statute, you will face criminal charges and a significant prison sentence.”

As of June 6 — 1,071 calls had been received and 632 letters mailed.

In addition to the calls, the statewide crackdown, funded in part by National Highway Traffic Safety Administration grants, has resulted in 15,292 summonses for cellphone use/texting and another 7,003 for careless driving.

Participating law enforcement agencies also issued 8,284 summonses for speeding and 7,343 for for seat-belt law

violations.

The #77 calls are answered by the State Police and forwarded to the local police agency with jurisdiction, which in certain circumstances can respond to the call and, if the behavior is witnessed, issue a summons. If the license plate of the alleged dangerous driver is gathered, a letter detailing the time and place of the observed offense

is sent to the vehicle owner’s home.

This does not mean that those who spot distracted drivers should text while driving themselves. Those making a report should pull over to make the call, use a hands-free device or have a passenger make the call. Pedestrians, of course, may call #77 as well.

Only report what you see when it is safe to do so.

It’s an electronic recounting, to the nanosecond, of the amount of money owed by the United States and, currently – I hope you’re sitting down – we are more than $19 trillion in the hole, and counting.

That’s trillion, folks, with 12 zeros after the 19.

It’s a wonder our credit is still good but, after all, if the government is running short, it can always print more money.

But then you get inflation and the value of the dollar starts to decline.

On the other hand, if Uncle Sam stops writing checks, then it will fall to the states, counties and municipalities to pick up the bill.

Well, I’m neither an economist nor a banker but, as a concerned citizen I’ve come up with my top five suggestions which, I firmly believe, can only help our country exploit some potential revenueproducing opportunities.

Frankly, these seem so easy to implement, I can’t believe no U.S. Treasury Secretary worth his/her salt has come up with any in the interim.

No. 1: Rent out Air Force One. To me, this is a no-brainer.

Farmer’s Market opens June 22 Kearny’s Farmer’s opens for business Thursday, June 22.

Shoppers will enjoy “Jersey Fresh” produce like just-picked strawberries and blueberries, honey, specialty cookies and breads, herbs and flowers. And on opening day, the first 100 customers will receive a free plant to help start their own home-growing season.

During the 2017 market year, shoppers will receive a free, earth-friendly, reusable canvas shopping bag, while supplies last, with the purchase of over $10 at any individual vendor.

In July and August, a $1 discount coupon will be available to customers who spend $10 or more at an individual vendor.

The discount coupons are sponsored by the Kearny Urban Enterprise Zone (KUEZ).

“This law takes a different approach in permitting individual pharmacists to dispense naloxone without a prescription, pursuant to a standing order issued by the Department of Health,” Benson said. “Ultimately, this means the possibility of more lives saved if a pharmacist doesn’t have to obtain an individual order from a physician each time.”

A number chain pharmacies recently announced that they are making naloxone available to anyone without a prescription through what appears to be a standing order issued by a doctor, which is currently authorized under the “Overdose Prevention Act” (OPA).

“Naloxone has proven to be a life-saver. And each life we save provides another chance

to get that person into addiction treatment and hopefully put them on the road to recovery and a vastly different outcome,” Vainieri Huttle said.

The law, which amends the OPA, stipulates, in particular, that a licensed pharmacist may dispense an opioid antidote to any patient who is deemed to be capable of administering the same, regardless of whether that patient presents an individual prescription for the antidote.

Protocols would have to be consistent with the provisions of the OPA, and must require a pharmacist to determine that the patient seeking the antidote is capable of administering the same to an overdose victim in an emergency.

Any pharmacist who acts in good faith, and in accordance with the law’s requirements, in supplying an opioid antidote to a patient without a prescription, will be immune under the OPA from any civil or criminal liability or any professional disciplinary action stemming from such act.

The break occurred that morning before 7 a.m., and ultimately led to the collapse of part of River Road near Stevens, a North Arlington NIXLE alert said.

Passaic Valley Water Commission repair workers were on-scene by 8 a.m., and

work to fix the broken main was completed by 2 p.m., ahead of initial expectations.

A few business owners told The Observer they were told by borough officials that water would be back and running in the area by 3 p.m..

“We’re opening at 3,” Robert DaSilva, the owner of Centanni, said.

“They’re working on the pipes — they’ve been down

there since 8 o’clock this morning.”

Businesses that rely on the water supply, from the Arlington Diner north to Corrado’s Market, were closed.

A 7-Eleven remained open, but coffee-seekers were surely disappointed. Coffee wasn’t available during the outage.

The cause of the break was not immediately known.

Harrison cop struck by car HARRISON – he Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office is investigating a service-related gun discharge after a police officer in Harrison was struck by a car he’d pulled over.

On Tuesday, June 6, at approximately 4:20 a.m., a Harrison police officer made a motor-vehicle stop in the area of Jersey and South 7th streets in Harrison. The vehicle stopped and as the officer initiated contact with the driver of the vehicle, the driver drove away, striking and injuring the officer, the prosecutor’s office said.

The officer discharged his service weapon during the incident.

The injured officer was taken

by Emergency Medical Services to St. Michael’s Medical Center in Newark, where he was treated for minor injuries

Pursuant to Attorney General guidelines, the Office of the Hudson County Prosecutor has taken over the investigation from the Harrison Police Department because of the discharge, and the Prosecutor’s Internal Affairs Unit is in the early stages of the investigation.

No arrests have been made at present.

Pet Valu marks successful adoptions Pet Valu in April completed one of its most successful Pet Appreciation Months on record this year, raising a total of $478,763 for local animal rescues and facilitating 1,016 pet adoptions — an increase over the 927 adoptions last year.

Thousands of customers participated at their stores by purchasing their limitedtime festive pet bandanas and Paper Paw prints to hang in the window.

The work in its communities expanded into this month as Pet Valu launched National Adoption Weekend June 9-11. Local animal rescues were at Pet Valu’s 300-plus stores with animals up for adoption by loving families.

Also at Pet Valu throughout June is its Kitty Litter Drive, which will benefit the stores’ local partners caring for homeless cats. Customers can contribute by donating bags of kitty litter at any store, and Pet Valu will retail bags of Kitty’s Best Litter at the special price of $5.99 during the drive.

In 2016, Pet Valu raised a combined total of $443,579 during the three annual drives, equating to more than 74,000 bags of litter.

Already this year, Pet Valu’s customers have donated 36,157 bags of kitty litter, a value of $211,148. Other fundraisers have also been highly successful, including Pet Valu’s annual campaign in March for America’s VetDogs, an organization that helps place service animals with disabled veterans and first-responders. The 2017 campaign brought in the highest amounts ever recorded in the partnership’s history.

Kearny relay team headed to New Balance Outdoor Nationals The construction of a successful relay team in track and field has so many parameters.

There’s the chemistry between the four runners and believe it or not, there are the personalities of the four.

Then, there’s the strategy. The coach has to align the four runners in the proper order.

In the case of a medley relay, the runners have to be assigned the proper distances.

Then, there’s the talent. A good relay team needs precision within the baton handoffs, with every stride. It has to perform like a well tuned machine, one with all pistons churning, moving, all for the one common goal.

Frankly, it’s more a work of art than a track and field event.

Kearny High School head track and field coach Al Perez knows that all too well.

“When you’re putting together a relay team, it’s always different,” Perez said. “You always have different kids.”

Back in early April, Perez formed a sprint

medley relay team of Ozzy Cabides, Diego Torales, Rauly Cordero and Liam Solano.

“Coming into the season, it was a little iffy,” Cordero said. “We’re all running together for the first time as a relay.”

The quartet ran together for the first time at the Hudson County Track Coaches Association Relays and immediately, they knew they had something special.

“I had a special feeling,” Cabides said. “It was the first time we ran together, but I was real confident that we could do big things.”

“I thought it was an interesting team to watch,” Perez said. “They won that race and it was very eye opening. At the time, I thought it would be a special group.”

Perez thought that the quartet had the makings of being a sprint medley relay team that could actually qualify for the New Balance Outdoor Nationals in Greensboro, N.C. “I took over in 2004 and we never had anyone see VIEW page

ax Vigliotti enjoyed one of the greatest seasons in the history of Lyndhurst High School baseball. The senior outfielder batted a ridiculous .545 with eight doubles, four triples, five homers and 23 RBI batting in the leadoff position for the Golden Bears. Those are insane numbers, the best offensive numbers produced by a Lyndhurst baseball player in ages.

Vigliotti worked hard in the offseason to prepare for his senior year.

“I changed my stance at the plate,” said Vigliotti, who took batting instructions from

Joe Mauro during the winter months. “I wasn’t comfortable at first, but it started to come around.”

Vigliotti said that he didn’t get much chance to hit the last two seasons, so he didn’t know how he would fare this time around.

“I just didn’t hit the first two years,” Vigliotti said. “I knew I had to do something.”

But to improve to a .545 hitter?

That’s off the charts.

“Yeah, I was a little surprised,” Vigliotti said. “It was my senior year and I wanted to go out with a bang.”

Well, Vigliotti’s career will end on an extremely high note this week, as he has been selected to the New Jersey Scholastic Baseball Coaches Association’s All-Star team,

earning a berth with the top players from the Northeast portion of the state.

The game was set to be played Tuesday, June 13, after Observer press time, at the famed Diamond Nation facility in Flemington.

Vigliotti is the first Lyndhurst player selected to the NJSBCA All-Star team since Mark Naseef in 2011.

“I was speechless at first,” Vigliotti said. “I didn’t know how I was going to be selected. It’s an honor to be chosen.

O’Neill, a standout pitcher/outfielder, was selected to play in the Underclass Games.

“It’s a great honor,” O’Neill said. “I can’t wait. I know the time is now for me to get my name out there. I know some college coaches will be watching, so I have to do my best in games like this, as well as my summer league team and the camps and showcases that I go to.”

O’Neill posted a 4-3 record with a 3.43 earned run average this season for the Ma-

roon Raiders, defeating West Essex twice. He also had a 12 strikeout game against Verona and fanned 11 in a win over West Essex. He also pitched very well in a loss to Seton Hall Prep, who was ranked No. 1 in the state for a stretch this season.

“I do play the outfield, but my primary position is the outfield,” O’Neill said.

O’Neill is spending the summer months playing for Wladyka Baseball’s 16-and-under Continental team.

“We have tournaments set up every other weekend, so I’ll be pretty busy,” said O’Neill, who also stands to be the Maroon Raiders’ starting quarterback on the football team this fall.

“I love both sports, but based on my skill level and my size, I think it’s harder for me to get noticed by the colleges playing football. So I have a better chance in baseball. That’s why I have to do well this summer.”

O’Neill is definitely an athlete whose talent level is on the rise.

It’s nice to see the local baseball players being recognized statewide for their talents.

Vigliotti and O’Neill got the chance to extend their seasons by a week or so. That’s an honor in itself.

“It was incredible,” said Cabides, who runs the 400-meter leg. “I was a little nervous, but I kept telling myself that if I ran my hardest, we had a shot. I didn’t know if we would make it, but once I saw Liam cross the finish line,

“It gives us a little recognition for the school and the program,” Perez said. “It’s pretty exciting.”

“We had the right mix,” said Cordero, who runs the 200-meter leg. “We could count on each other. We were actually pretty good. I didn’t think we would be able to go, but now we’re getting the chance. All of us have put

the time in to get better. Now we’re ready to go.”

The Kardinals are all excited to get the opportunity to extend their season an extra week.

“It’s incredible,” Cabides said. “It’s a special feeling.

It’s my senior year. I’ve never been to the Nationals before.

I’m now going with my boys, one last time. This is going to make up for the things I didn’t accomplish over my career.”

“It’s going to be good to show everyone what we’re doing,” Torales said. “We’re putting Kearny on the map.”

This week, the Kardinals worked out at a friendlier pace to get ready for the nationals.

“We ran the low mileage, doing a lot of speed work,” Solano said. “Practices are usually much longer than what we’ve been having. I never thought I’d get the chance like this with my teammates.

Those are the truly special athletes — and the North Jersey Interscholastic Con-

ference goes far and beyond their duties by holding an annual Sportsmanship Awards Luncheon at the Chart House Restaurant in Weehawken last week.

select two athletes— one male and one female — to represent their schools at the luncheon.

The athletes were selected by the respective coaches and athletic directors of the NJIC. Four local schools, namely Lyndhurst, North Arlington, Harrison and Queen of Peace, were honored at the luncheon.

Harrison received three awards, two for athletes Faustina Barreto and Joseph Renderos, and one for athletic director Kim McDonough Huaranga, who was named the NJIC-Liberty Division Athletic Director of the Year.

Barreto, who was an outside hitter on the girls’ volleyball team, was thrilled to receive the award.

“It felt great, first being named team captain and now this,” Barreto said. “I was one who never screamed on the court. That just comes to me naturally. I’m not an angry person. I try to keep my cool at all times, because I have younger people on the court who look up to me. I did not want to have any negative energy.”

Barreto said her two biggest thrills were being named Observer Athlete of the Week last year and receiving this award.

“That meant a lot to me, but winning the sportsmanship award is even better,” Barreto said.

Renderos was a baseball player for the Blue Tide.

“I felt really honored getting this award,” Renderos said.

“It’s good that people noticed you. They didn’t even have to look up stats or anything. I just like being the guy to help out my teammates. I didn’t expect to receive an award like this.

I’m so excited and honored.”

Both athletes are headed to St. Peter’s University, where the third Harrison award winner was a star basketball player.

“It’s a huge honor for me,” McDonough Huaranga said.

“Anytime your peers acknowledge you in this way, it means a lot. I’m grateful that they think of me so highly and selected me to receive the award.”

Huaranga was asked if she helps other women aspire to be an athletic director like she is.

“I think more and more women are getting into the field,” Huaranga said. “As years go by, there are more female athletic directors. I am a female member of the Boys’ Club (the lone female AD in the league), but I don’t feel any

different. I’m just fortunate to have coaches and athletes who make things better.”

Shauna Voza was an honoree from Lyndhurst.

“I was shocked when they picked me,” said Voza, who ran cross country and was a cheerleader. “There were so many other possible candidates. Why did they pick me?

But I really don’t want to ask, because I’m very excited.”

Voza, headed to FDU Florham in the fall, said she knew about the award because her friends Joanne Arvanitakis and Matt DeMarco received the honor last year.

“I’m actually getting the same award that they got,” Voza said. “When I think that people will be comparing me to Joanne and Matt, that’s amazing. I’m so honored that people recognized the little things I did.”

Voza’s classmate Michael Carrino also received the award.

From North Arlington, Kelly Lennon and Daniel Antunes were the recipients.

“Honestly, I was shocked,” said Lennon, who played soccer and ran indoor and outdoor track. “But I was very happy my coaches selected me. It’s so humbling, especially seeing all the other kids I played against and ran against.”

Lennon, who owns a 4.0 grade point average, is headed to The College of New Jersey to study psychology with the hope of going pre-med and psychiatry.

“It’s definitely rewarding to be recognized for how I played, not what I did,” Lennon said. “I definitely did not expect this.”

Antunes, headed to New Jersey City University in the fall,

played soccer and ran track.

“When I was on the field, I knew I was doing the right thing all the time,” Antunes said. “I’m glad someone noticed that. It made me feel good inside to get this. One of my best friends is Joanna Seca (now playing soccer at Drexel) and she won last year, so I remember saying, ‘That’s a cool award.’ Now I got it. Getting recognized goes a long way. I got this award not for being an athlete, but just being myself. I was doing it out of the kindness of my heart.”

Ashley Ruivo was proud to be the last recipient from Queen of Peace, which is closing its doors for good next week.

“I felt amazed, winning for not how I played, but for the attitude with which I played,” said Ruivo, a soccer and softball player at QP. “I heard

about it from other friends who received the award, but I didn’t think I had a chance to get it, because we already had finished school. It’s a little bittersweet. I’m happy for me and Adrian (Klein, the QP boys’ recipient), but I’m sad to now that no one else will ever get the opportunity as I did. Queen of Peace did so much for me. It’s an honor to know I’m the last to get the award.”

Ruivo, a Kearny resident, will attend Seton Hall University and study biochemistry, with the hope of going into the pharmaceutical industry.

“This was definitely rewarding,” Ruivo said.

It’s a wonderful event that the NJIC holds annually. Harrison resident Gary Schimel, one of the top women’s college basketball officials, was the featured speaker.

Janet had been a legal secretary. She was very involved with Knox Church in Kearny where she served as secretary, editor of Knox News, taught Sunday school and sang in the choir. She was past president of Jefferson School PTA and volunteered at St. Barnabas Hospice. She loved to bowl and go shopping.

Wife of the late Hugh Fleming, she was the mother of David H. Fleming (Jennifer) and Gail J. Knowlton (John).
