Originally from the Vailsburg section of Newark, Koeppel has spent the last half-century in her adopted town of Kearny. She vaguely remembers when the town marked its centennial with, among other things, the burial of a time capsule in Military Park which reportedly will be opened for the 200th anniversary in 2067.

For this year’s opening event, Kearny’s elected officials outfitted themselves in garments evocative of the mid-19th century – when Kearny separated itself from Harrison and incorporated.

In keeping with the postColonial Era theme, the town arranged for a “Town Crier,” played by Richard LaLena, a resident of Berlin, N.J., who – amply animated – recited the articles of incorporation approved by the New Jersey Legislature in March 1867.

LaLena’s regular gig is the official town crier of Historic Smithville, a restored 19th century village outside Atlantic City. He received a $300 payment from the anniversary committee for his services, according to Mayor Alberto Santos.

Kearny Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts sang several patriotic tunes, Brandi-Leigh Miller of the Junior Woman’s Club of Arlington sang the national anthem and the mayor and Town Council – featuring Rich Konopka with

a fake handlebar mustache – re-enacted the first official town government meeting just outside Town Hall, festooned with Sesquicentennial banners designed

by Kearny High student Daniel Veloso and printing/ graphic arts teacher Joseph Domalewski.

Santos told the audience, which numbered perhaps 200+ spectators, that Kearny forming its own government was “not just about us breaking away from Harrison, but an exercise in self-government and keeping government close to its citizens.”

Today, the mayor said, that lesson still applies: “The shared task of democracy remains the same.” And, he added, the path to that common goal involves “inclusion” of all members of the Kearny community – longstanding residents and immigrants alike – in keeping a “commitment” to the future of that community.

Among the dignitaries wishing the town well were Hudson County Executive Tom DeGise, State Sen./ North Bergen Mayor Nick Sacco and Harrison Mayor James Fife.

The town also reserved a place of honor for family members of former Councilman Jonathan Giordano, who died an untimely death earlier this year.

KPD: What a lovely bracelet you have!

I

f someone gave you an ankle bracelet from, say, Tiffany’s, it would just be an item of adornment. But when it comes from the state, it has a different meaning.

Or at least it used to.

Read on: Shortly before noon on Thursday, April 20, members of the Kearny EMS advised KPD headquarters that they had observed a suspicious individual trying to enter a 2014 Honda parked at Liberty St. and Kearny Ave. Officers Alan Stickno, Daniel Esteves, Jay Ward and Jordenson Jean responded and confronted suspect Jemel Coster, 29, of Jersey City.

Police said he was detained at the scene, subsequently identified by the EMS and arrested on a charge of criminal attempted burglary of a vehicle. In a search incident to arrest, police said they found that Coster was wearing a N.J. State-issued parolee ankle bracelet, presumably designed to monitor the whereabouts and activities of such persons.

However, when Coster was brought to HQ and the KPD

contacted the district Parole Office, the cops were reportedly told that it would be “okay to release him on a summons.” [Editor’s note: Although we have no information on why Coster was previously arrested, our reaction to his release was still, “What?!?”]

A more eloquent reaction came from a law enforcement source who has recently been dealing with such matters as the consequences of bail reform and who commented, “It just keeps getting more bizarre.”

Parents, teens should watch ‘13 Reasons’ B

By Kevin Canessa Jr. ack in December 1985 – I was 11 – my mom made the pretty easy decision to move us from Jersey City to Kearny. Being 11 was, perhaps, the most awkward time I can ever recall. I was on the chubby side. The glasses I wore back then were so big I could practically use them in a wood-working shop for eye protection. My voice – let’s just say it was squeaky enough to drive people in another direction when I spoke.

So it shouldn’t be much of a surprise that when I first got here, I was picked on. Here I was the nerdy kid from Jersey City entering a sixth-grade classroom – right in the middle of the academic year – that was filled with kids who had been going to Schuyler School together since they were in kindergarten in 1979.

The teasing didn’t last long, but whilst it was happening, it seemed like my world was crumbling. I wanted no part of the place at first. In fact, my mom even agreed to let me go back to the Catholic school I was attending in Jersey City for seventh-grade. But I ultimately decided to stay, because after a while, I fought back, and somehow started to “fit in” sometime in February 1986.

I share this story not for pity, but because I was reminded of it all after watching 13 episodes of the Netflix series released March 31 called “13 Reasons Why.” It’s the fictional story of a young girl, called Hannah

ended in tragedy. But a series like “13 Reasons Why” truly should and will open a dialogue between adults and teenagers. In fact, we’ve already heard of school districts around the country bringing the series to guidance classes or social-studies classes (so far, most have been in New England, including Massachusetts and Rhode Island.)

The show is rated TV-MA, so it’s likely that permission would have to be granted by parents for their kids to watch this in a school setting.

‘Bayonne Bleeder’ biopic on big screen BAYONNE – “You know Rocky. Now meet Chuck.”

So proclaims a New York newspaper advertisement for the new film, “Chuck,” labeled by the ad as “the untold story of the inspiration for Rocky Balboa.”

Back in 1975, Chuck Wepner, a club fighter from Bayonne, got the chance of a lifetime when he was picked to challenge Muhammad Ali, who

had just unseated George Forman as heavyweight champion.

Wepner, who was credited with a knockdown of Ali, was counted out with only seconds to go in the 15th round of their bout.

In 2003, Wepner – known as “The Bayonne Bleeder” – sued filmmaker Sylvester Stallone for allegedly reneging on a deal to compensate him as the creative spark that led to

Stallone’s making the Oscarwinning 1976 movie “Rocky.”

The lawsuit hit the canvas three years later after the litigants agreed to drop their gloves and settle for undisclosed terms.

On Friday, May12, the film “Chuck,” directed by Philippe Falardeau and featuring Liev Schreiber in the title role, will be shown at the Frank Theatres at the South Cove Commons Plaza in Bayonne.

It was there, Dillin said, that Wepner did much of his training as a boxer and, he asserted, it was this setting that Stallone adapted in his film when he had Rocky Balboa run up the steps leading to the Philadelphia Art Museum.

Dillin said he’ll apply the proceeds from the film promotion toward the cost of the “life-size” statue.

Nutley

The Nutley Health Department offers a stroke-prevention and thyroid screening Wednesday, May 3, 9 a.m. to noon, at the Nutley Health Department, 149 Chestnut St. For an appointment, call 973284-4976. A $30 fee is due at the screening. Payment may be by cash, check or credit card.

The stroke prevention screening is designed to help people learn what is going on inside the carotid arteries (where 80% of all strokes occur). A buildup of cholesterol can cause the plaque formation that can lead to a stroke.

This pain-free screening is done by a trained health professional. An ultrasound wand is scanned over carotid arteries (in the neck). No needles or dyes are used.

While this screening cannot determine how well the thyroid is working, the size or texture of the thyroid can be an indication of potential problems. The only way to know how the thyroid is working is to have blood work done.

Delayed report, quick arrests

KEARNY – apparently took a local robbery victim nine hours to notify police of the crime, but once the KPD was alerted last week, the suspects were in cuffs in what you might call near-record time, authorities reported. t

Police said that, at about 8 a.m., Monday, April 24, Officer Alan Stickno was flagged down on the 200 block of Davis Ave. by a 23-year-old Kearny man who said that he had been threatened by a trio of robbers at 11 p.m. the previous night. According to the police report, the victim said someone had banged on his apartment door and, when he opened it, he was confront-

ed by three males who demanded money.

Police said one of the three was wielding a long metal pipe, and another pulled up his shirt to reveal the handle of a black handgun in his waistband. Their target said he slammed the door shut and then heard them running through and out of the building.

Chris Levchak and Officers Dowie, Fernandes and Jason Rodrigues were called to the store on a report of a “disruptive group in the produce area, eating fruit (grapes) and drinking squeezy juices.”

Police said the officers first encountered a “completely uncooperative” Nasiar Brydie, 20, of Newark, who became profane and hostile, tried to walk away and was finally detained and arrested for disorderly conduct.

Walmart security provided a description of one of the other squeezy-juicers who had already left the store and Dowie found him entering a 2005 Chrysler in the lot. Approaching the car to question the man, Dowie reportedly observed a marijuana cigar on the front seat, arrested him for possession and took him back to the store. Police said he gave his name as Willie Barr, but was found to actually be Randi Barr, 19, of Irvington, who had a no-bail burglary warrant out of Plymouth, Pa., and a $500 MV warrant from Newark.

The respective jurisdictions were notified, and Barr was also charged with hindering arrest.

As Mother’s Day nears …

t about 10:10 a.m. on Monday, April 24, Kearny police received a call about an apparently impaired motorist in the vicinity of a local school. Officer Jordenson Jean responded to the area and found a 40-yearold Kearny woman pulled over in a 2011 Mazda.

Police said she was dropping off a 6-year-old child at the CHERRY BLOSSOMS from

school.

While interviewing the driver, Jean reportedly detected the odor of alcohol. He was joined by back-up Sgt. Joseph Vulcano and Officer Rich Poplaski, field sobriety tests were conducted, and the woman was arrested. She was subsequently evaluated by a KPD drug recognition expert, who believed her to be under the influence

of a combination of alcohol and drugs, police said.

Police said a search incident to arrest revealed the woman to be in possession of: • One wax fold of suspected heroin, stamped “Traffic”; • Five empty vials with suspected cocaine residue; • Three hypodermic needles; • Two empty 200 ml. bottles [those are the tiny kind] of

Majorska vodka, and • 35 empty wax folds stamped with “brand names” including “Golden Boy,” “Apple,” “Tropicana,” “Sweet Butter” and “Most Evil.”

The woman was charged with: possession of heroin, of drug paraphernalia and of hypodermic needles; driving while intoxicated; DWI with a minor in a MV; having an open

container of alcohol in a MV, and possession of a CDS in a MV. The N.J. Department of Child Protective Services was contacted.

Kearny volleyball team opening eyes The Kearny High School volleyball team is off to a brilliant start, compiling seven wins among their first nine matches.

Bill Mullins, who also doubles as the Harrison boys’ basketball coach, has been coaching the boys’ volleyball team at Kearny for the last six years. The Kardinals have enjoyed some signature victories thus far, including a win over state-ranked St. Peter’s Prep two weeks ago.

For a program that went only 9-13 a year ago, it’s almost unthinkable that they would turn it around so quickly.

“We lost only one guy from last year,” Mullins said. “We lost a lot of close games last year, so I knew we would be better this year. We had a good run for about three or four years, then we had a bit of a down year. We had to get better, considering we play with all the great teams in northern New Jersey.”

Mullins said that this was a perfect year for a resurrection.

“I don’t think there’s a superstar team or a superstar player in northern Jersey,” Mullins said. “There are a lot of good teams, but I think everything is wide open.

I think what helped us is

that we switched a couple of positions around and gotten better since the beginning of the season.”

Mullins said that he had a meeting with his team after an early season loss to Elizabeth.

“I asked them if they wanted to be good,” Mullins said. “I told them that they were a year older and we have some size. We should try to take care of the little things and be a little better. They’ve really worked hard to get better one day at a time. We’re not even thinking about the next game. Now we have to see what happens.”

Senior David Mrowko has become a mainstay on the team. The outside hitter leads the team in kills.

“He’s 6-foot-4 and has some nice size,” Mullins said. “He can hit the ball hard. He’s our hardest hitter. He’s a good player.”

Senior Andy Martinez is another solid outside hitter.

“He’s only 5-foot-9, but he gets the most out of his body than anyone,” Mullins said. “He has the best jumping ability on the team. He’s usually up against the bigger, taller see VIEW page

T

he Nutley High School crew team was ending its regular practice runs on the Passaic River in the waters near East Newark and Harrison last Wednesday afternoon.

Phil Amiths, a junior at Nutley and a member of the Nutley senior four, and Michael DeHaas, a senior and the coxswain of that boat, were getting ready to call it a day around 5 p.m., when Amiths said that he saw a big splash happen to the side of him.

“I saw the big splash and a series of short, choppy struggling splashes,” Amiths said.

“I told my coach (Judy McIntyre) that I thought someone was in the river.”

DeHaas agreed.

“The man was just flailing around,” DeHaas said. “But he was in the river. He was struggling.”

McIntyre, who was in an accompanying motorboat called the launch, also heard the splash.

“They yelled right away that someone had jumped,” McIntyre said.

“At first, I didn’t believe it,” Amiths said. “I thought something might have fallen into the water. As we got closer, you could see that someone was in the water.”

The kids were right. According to Harrison police reports, a 46-year-old African-American male, whose identity has been withheld, from Maplewood, apparently jumped into the Passaic River from the Bridge Street Bridge that links Harrison and East Newark Earlier, Harrison police were alerted that a man was about to jump off the bridge in a suicide attempt and two patrolmen were dispatched to the scene.

The unidentified male took his wallet and a small plastic bag out of his pocket when approached by police, climbed over the bridge’s railing. One of the police officers tried to grab the man by the arm, but the police report said that the officer could not hold the man and he fell approxi-

mately 20 feet into the water.

It was then the quick-thinking members of the Nutley crew team went to work.

“We threw him a floatation device that we had onboard for safety reasons,” DeHaas said. “Coach grabbed onto the side. The man had no idea what was going on. By that time, he was unresponsive.

The only thing he said was, ‘No.’” After all, the waters of the Passaic had to be frigid. The outside temperature hovered around 55 degrees Wednesday on what was basically a cold and rainy day. Therefore, the water was much colder, like 15 degrees colder than the outside air. Long stints in the water would have led to hypothermia.

Amiths and DeHaas were able to keep the man safe with the floatation device and with the assistance from McIntyre in the motorized launch boat, they were able to bring the man to shore, where he was treated immediately, then brought to St. Michael’s Hospital in Newark for treatment. see RESCUE next page

“But it was a really long five minutes,” Amiths said.

McIntyre, who is known affectionately as “Coach Mac,” has been coaching the crew team at Nutley for 12 years.

“I have not seen anything like this before,” McIntyre said. “It was very surreal. It all happened so fast. From the boys seeing it to getting the man help, I’d say it was four

minutes. I give the boys credit for being so calm. They knew what they had to do.”

The Nutley crew team got the man to safety, where he was met by the first responders that were summoned to the scene.

“They held their composure and that’s all I can ask for,” McIntyre said. “Their first instinct was that this man needed help and they did what they had to do to save him.”

McIntyre said that the man was fortunate in many ways.

“Well, he was lucky that the

current wasn’t super fast at that time of day,” McIntyre said. “It’s a little slower than it normally is. Plus, we were coming home a little later than we normally would be. So all in all, it could have been much worse. I’m very proud of our boys. They were in the right place at the right time. They knew something was wrong and they did what they had to do.”

“At first, it felt like any other normal day,” Amiths said. “It was like any other day until he went in. It was kind of crazy. If

DeHaas agreed.

“I don’t know if it was from his perspective, but we were lucky to be there to help him,” said DeHaas, who already plans to enlist in the United States Marine Corps upon graduation from Nutley High next month. “I don’t know if police would have been able to save him. He was just fortunate, for a lack of a better term.”

DeHaas said that he couldn’t believe what took place.

“Through all my years of rowing, I never thought I’d see someone in the water,”

Nutley crew head coach Kevin Smyth said that his athletes are trained to help those in need.

“It’s what we expect,” Smyth said. “We have an entire team of high character student/athletes who would do anything for anyone and would want the same thing to be done for themselves if needed.”

DeHaas said that if he ever received the chance, he would like to meet the man he helped to save last week.

“I’d probably want to meet him and just spend five minutes with him,” DeHaas said.

“We came in second in the tournament to Lakeland,” Mullins said. “I think it’s good for our confidence. We still have to prove ourselves a little.”

ting back into it and I jumped on it. I called Don up and he’s been great with us. He’s very good with technique. He’s a volleyball lifer who brings all this great knowledge and experience.”

Guide coaches the Kardinals’ junior varsity program while helping Mullins with the varsity.

“I’m glad to have him,” Mullins said. “This team is having a lot of fun. You never know where we’ll end up. We’ve been fortunate to have won some of the matches we’ve won. We’re not taking anything for granted, but we have to stay focused and keep going forward.”

Kearny High legend Pace Kivlehan returns as girls’ soccer coach

I

t was the famed author Thomas Wolfe who once penned, “You can’t go home again.”

Well, it’s obvious that Wolfe wasn’t writing about Stefanee Pace Kivlehan.

The legendary athlete, easily the best girls’ soccer player Kearny High School ever produced, was appointed last week as the new head girls’ soccer coach at her alma mater.

Kivlehan, whose husband, Patrick, plays for the Cincin-

nati Reds, was an All-American during her playing days at Kearny, compiling more than 100 goals and 100 assists in her illustrious career that ended in 2004. Kivlehan then went on to play at Rutgers University and soon became a highly respected youth soccer coach with the Kearny Thistle program. She eventually became the head coach at Secaucus High School, but resigned last year to concentrate on the responsibilities with the Thistle.

When longtime girls’ coach Vin Almeida had to step down in order to replace John Millar as the athletic director, the door swung wide open for

“Once I got into coaching, it was always something I dreamed about doing,” Kivlehan said. “I was real excited when the position opened up.

This where I played and made so many memories. It’s going to be awesome.”

Kivlehan said that a majority of the returning players on the Kearny varsity are players who once played for Kivlehan with the Kearny Thistle program.

“I had a majority of them since they were 10,” Kivlehan said. “I’m very familiar with a lot of them. So that gets us off to a really good start. I always

told the parents (at Kearny Thistle) that if something opened up at Kearny, I would 100% consider it.”

Kivlehan’s middle sister, Samantha, worked as an assistant with Stefanee at Secaucus. The youngest sister, Sydney, is a senior at Kearny High and will attend William Paterson University to play softball there in the fall.

“Ever since Sydney was there and playing, I always went to her games to watch,” Kivlehan said. “I also volunteered (as an assistant coach) with Vin (a few years ago) and was excited then to be back.”

Kearny native Stefanee Pace Kivlehan, the school’s best all-time girls’ soccer player, has decided to come back home to serve as the head girls’ soccer coach, replacing Vin Almeida, the school’s new athletic director.

worried how her youngest sister would handle her being the new soccer coach.

“She actually surprised me and said it would be awesome if I became the coach,” Kivlehan said. “She said, ‘Too bad you missed me by a year. It would have been cool to have my sister as head coach and we would be bumping heads.’

I wish I would have had the chance to coach Syd. It would have been great to have the two of us together.”

Kivlehan said that she is excited about the prospects of the Kardinals in the future.

“We have a lot of young talent,” Kivlehan said. “I’m interested in seeing what these girls could do.”

Kivlehan said she had a brief meeting with the players last week after her appointment.

“A few of them seemed really excited,” Kivlehan said.

“They were asking me every day, ‘Did you get it? Did you get the job?’ They seemed really happy for me. I told them that we had a brief introduction before I made official summer plans.”

“They know me for a long time and they know how I operate,” Kivlehan said. “They know what I’m all about. They know I want to inject some Kearny pride back into the program. A lot of people don’t have that.”

Kivlehan said that she has received full support from Almeida.

“Anything I’ve wanted, he’s been able to get me,” Kivlehan said.

Kivlehan was also happy that the assistant coaches have agreed to remain on with her as part of the staff.

Breathing easier

It’s also a blessing for the program to have a female coach for the first time.

“I think having a female coach helps, especially one who has been through it all,”

Kivlehan said.

But never in her wildest dreams did Kivlehan see herself taking over the program at such a young age.

“It was definitely not what

I saw in my future,” Kivlehan said. “I can’t ask for anything more. I’m coming back to the school where I went and played. I think it’s all perfect timing.”

Joseph Cassera Joseph Cassera, 90, died Saturday, April 22, at home in Pt. Pleasant Beach.

The funeral service took place at the Thiele-Reid Family Funeral Home, Kearny, on Thursday, April 27. Interment was in Holy Cross Cemetery, North Arlington.

Mr. Cassera was born and raised in Kearny and lived there over 60 years before moving to Pt. Pleasant Beach in 1995. He served in the U.S.

Marines from 1945 until 1946.

Joseph was a firefighter for the town of Kearny from 1950 until he retired as a captain in 1985.

He is survived by his daughter, Marie Cassera and her husband Peter DiGiore; and one son, Joseph Cassera Jr. He was the grandfather of Lorenzo Natoli and Elliot and Eric Nash. He is also survived by three great-grandchildren.

Joseph was predeceased by his wife Jacqueline (nee Brunelle) Cassera in 1998 and his daughter Michele Nash in 1991.

The Kevin G. Kennedy Civic Association hosts its 24th annual scholarship breakfast at 10 a.m., May 21, at the Chandelier, 340 S. Franklin Ave., Belleville.

This year’s citizen scholarships will be offered in memory of Fred Montalbano and Henry Charzewski in recognition of their love of community service and family.

A yearly scholarship for music in memory of Cynthia Robinson, of Sly and the Family Stone, will also be awarded.

The Humanitarian of the Year for 2017 is Richard Hult & American Legion Post 105 and William H. Steimel & DAV Belleville/ Nutley Chapter 22 for their work and commitment to the people of Belleville and veterans.

Fife, McNeill added to hospital’s board of directors

Harrison Mayor James Fife and Kearny EMS CEO Harry McNeill were named to the board of directors of St. Michael’s Medical Center, the hospital announced.

McNeill was also elected vice-chair of the board, which was recently reconstituted after the sale of the hospital in May 2016 from Trinity Health to Prime Healthcare Services.

The hospital said its new board represents a broad swath of the Greater Newark community. The board is responsible for overseeing the direction of hospital.

St. Michael’s CEO Robert Iannaccone said it was especially important to have representatives on the board from Kearny and Harrison because SMMC is the hospital of choice for many residents from the two communities.

“With two exceptions, the

board of directors was built from scratch and each member was carefully selected to ensure all the communities we serve are well represented,” Iannaccone said. “The board will ensure that the hospital’s mission to provide compassionate, high-quality care is upheld in a financially sound manner that guarantees our long-term prospects.”

The other new board members are the Rev. Ronald Slaughter, the pastor of St. James AME in Newark; the Most Rev. Manuel Cruz, auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Newark; the Rev. Msgr. Ronald J. Rozniak, episcopal vicar for Health and Social Concerns of the Archdiocese of Newark; and Marisol Ramirez, an accounts-payable supervisor at PSE&G, Newark.

Also appointed to the board were Dr. William

DiGiacomo and Cecil Cates, who previously served on the SMMC board under the ownership of Trinity.

Fife’s relationship with St. Michael’s goes back to his first visit to the hospital in 1949, when he had his tonsils removed. He was also a patient in 2014, when he had a heart-valve replacement.

“I am humbled and proud that Mr. Iannaccone has asked me to serve on its board,” said Fife, mayor of Harrison since 2014. “I hope to live up to the expectations that Mr. Iannaccone has for me.”

McNeill, who served on a board that was involved in the design of SMMC’s new emergency department, said he was honored to be elected vice chair. “I will as we all will do our best to help Saint Michael’s become the best medical center in the state,” McNeill said.
