Scouts hike to World Trade Center T

hough most of the Scouts of Unit 305 in Kearny were born after 2001, they remember the sacrifice of the first responders and victims of the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. To pay tribute and to honor their service, Scouts and their families participated in an urban hike to tour the 9/11 Memorial and Museum on March 25.

The Scouts met in the morning on the lawn of St. Stephen’s Church in Kearny, in front of the church’s 9/11 memorial, a metal cross crafted from the steel supports of one of the Twin Towers.

Last week, Santos put the Walmart CEO on notice about the situation, writing, “As mayor of Kearny, this has been the source of most of my incoming calls for the past week (the entrance has been

seeking to regulate local pawnbrokers, Kearny is overreaching its authority and would compel Marcus “to submit to a duplicative and inconsistent regulatory and licensing scheme,” the complaint says.

If the law is adopted, the complaint says, Marcus must apply to the police chief for a new license or face the possible loss of his business and stiff penalties. Additionally, the law would allow the town to invalidate Marcus’ state license and “force [him] out of business….”

Therefore, the complaint reasons, the law should be struck down as void and the court should “order a preliminary injunction with temporary restraints barring enforcement of such ordinance.”

The lawsuit was filed on behalf of Marcus by New York attorney Scott K. McClain.

In the second case, Hartz Mountain Industries, represented by Hackensack attorney Justin P. Walder, sued Kearny, also in Superior Court, on Feb. 24, asking the court to order the town to provide the company “with an estoppel certificate … containing specific terms as required by a third-party lender.”

The dispute focuses on a Bergen Ave. redevelopment project involving a potential client of Hartz, for which Hartz says it is seeking $19 million in financing from a lender, TIAA (Teachers Insurance and Annuity Association of America), which “has requested that Hartz provide it with an estoppel certificate from its landlord, Kearny, [which] serves … as a representation to a lender that the

subject tenancy is in compliance,” the complaint says.

The estoppel certificate, Hartz’s complaint says, represents “that the tenant is not in default, the amount of rent being paid, the term of the tenancy, and that the lender will be entitled to step into the shoes of the lessee in the event of a foreclosure.”

“Hartz has requested that Kearny provide the [document] in a form satisfactory to [TIAA], but Kearny has refused to do so,” the complaint says, because of a separate lease agreement for a portion of the Bergen Ave. redevelopment parcel – (earmarked as the site of a Cummins Power Systems truck maintenance/ training facility) – which agreement, Kearny feels, has been legally compromised.

The town’s refusal to comply is critical, the complaint says, because, “Without the estoppel agreement, [TIAA] will not close on the financing agreement, thereby … subjecting Hartz to increased and undue financial risk” because it will be “unable to lock into a loan rate with [TIAA]” and that “creates a cloud over Hartz’ leasehold interest in the Bergen Ave. parcel…”

“Since 1988 … Hartz has incurred costs in excess of $23 million to remediate and close the former landfill located on the Bergen Ave. parcel as well as to prepare the land and commence construction for the Cummins tenancy.”

At a recent council meeting, town attorney James Bruno told Hartz President/ COO Constantino Milano that the matter would have to be settled through negotiations.

Waxing nostalgic at Hamilton School

Taped to the floor, in front of each “display,” was an imprint of the map of New Jersey. When a visitor stood on the map, the student would deliver his/her speech.

Consuming the No. 2 post is a good thing, said Jayden, because, as he put it, “I take care of my president – Thomas Jefferson.”

Jayden was among 157 fourth-graders at the Hamilton (named for Alexander Hamilton, the man killed by Burr) Elementary School who studied and portrayed famous New Jersey historical figures.

And, during a recent threeday period, they took turns showcasing their celebrity choices for the benefit of parents and loved ones as part of Live Wax Museum.

Then, after winter holiday break, the school’s 10 grade 4 teachers drafted a list of Garden State notables, put their names on index cards which they placed in a hat for students to randomly draw.

Whatever name they picked because their adopted historical figure.

Then, for the next two weeks, it was off to the races to come up with facts about their subject, using school media labs and chrome books containing appropriate search engines to gather facts and then, formulate a brief narrative summarizing the individual’s accomplishments.

Each student got a poster board and a large sheet of brown paper to which they fastened clippings and photographs about their historic figures.

And they prepared a short speech that they would commit to memory to recite – in a costume appropriate to their figures – to parents and visitors on the day when their class section was scheduled.

The awards are given in recognition of those individuals “whose performance has

Police Officer Joseph Sloan, the Harrison Police Department’s honoree, has only been on the force since 2015 but he’s made his presence known.

In particular, Doyle said, Sloan was credited for the following actions: He was instrumental in the arrest of two suspects who were wanted for a carjacking in East Orange.

He made a number of high profile drug arrests.

He assisted in the capture of three individuals who were involved in counterfeiting (who were wanted by another agency).

And, in general, Sloan “earned the respect of his supervisors and fellow officers, garnering several favorable write-ups,” said Doyle.

Sloan is currently assigned to a crime suppression unit “as a direct result of his work ethic and patrol tactics,” Doyle said.

Firefighter Ray Tremer III, the HFD’s awardee, was credited with helping save the life of an infant who was brought directly to the firehouse on Sussex St. on the afternoon of June 3, 2016.

Tremer told The Observer he was reviewing paperwork with Capt. Joe Nichirco and Lt. Joe Faugno when suddenly, “there was the loudest knock I ever heard – someone was pounding on the door.”

Investigating, the firefighters found two people standing at the entrance – a man and a distraught woman holding her baby who had stopped breathing.

“The child’s color had turned grey and, just from looking, you get that sinking feeling in the pit of your stomach that things are not good,” Tremer said.

He said the trio – all trained as EMTs – determined that the child had experienced a seizure of some kind. “He needed to be cooled down and given oxygen.”

Immediately, the firefighters

called for MONOC, the town’s emergency ambulance, and, while that crew was enroute, “all three of us started working on the kid, doing ‘rescue breathing,’ ” Tremer said.

They applied a bag valve mask hooked up to oxygen to the child’s face, in an effort to facilitate breathing, and within about eight minutes, the baby showed signs of responding, going from gray to flush to pink, Tremer said.

MONOC then rushed the 2-year-old boy to a hospital in Newark where child was later reported doing well.

Tremer said the firefighters later learned that the woman, a town resident, had been running down Seventh St. with her baby looking for help when a man – later identified as Khayree Taylor – stopped her and asked what was wrong.

After learning the baby’s condition, Taylor “threw them in his truck and drove to the firehouse,” Tremer said.

Tremer, who was hired by the HFD Nov. 10, 2014, said his squad “got a save last Wednesday night with an older woman who had gone unconscious” while home with her family.

“Hopefully, she’s alright now,” he said.

Harrison Fire Director Harold Stahl said: “He’s a good man. I’d take a dozen like him if I could get them.”

Tremer’s dad is a former member of the FDNY, having served 18 years with a rescue company until his retirement in 1999 – three years after his unit was involved in an unsuccessful rescue mission.

“He was trained as a SCUBA diver and he responded after TWA Flight 800 exploded over Long Island and crashed in the ocean [July 17, 1996],” Tremer recalled.

There were no survivors.

KPD: Stolen car squealed on suspects A

t 2:15 a.m. on Sunday, April 2, Officer Jonathan Dowie was patrol, driving west on Bergen Ave., when he observed a 1994 Jeep -- its tires squealing -- turn off Windsor St. and enter Bergen on the wrong side of the street.

He conducted a MV stop, was advised by headquarters that the Jeep was listed as stolen, and held its three occupants at gunpoint until back-up (Capt. David Feldhan and Officers Chris Manolis, Jason Rodrigues and Derek Hemphill) could arrive.

Police said the driver, a 17-year-old from Hoboken, had a juvenile warrant out of Harrison and was listed on the FBI’s National Crime Information Center (NCIC) database as a missing person. He was turned over to Hudson County authorities and reportedly will be charged as a juvenile with possession of a stolen vehicle.

Front-seat passenger Kristiana Schmidt, 19, of Kearny, was taken to the Hud-

son County Jail after being charged with receiving stolen property, conspiracy, and possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia, police said. The other passenger, Jose Sanchez, 20, of Kearny, was also booked for conspiracy and receiving stolen property.

According to the KPD, the Jeep had been reported stolen April 1 from the 400 block of Chestnut St. ••• Other recent reports from the Kearny police blotter included the following:

At the age of 14, she’d already been through more than what most adults go through in a lifetime. And yet, there she was, Monday, Sept. 14, 1998, preparing to begin her first day of sophomore year. She had a perfect reminder of the murder that took her boyfriend so violently. Her crutches were a reminder that she could have been murdered that day, too, but she got lucky. Very lucky.

At that moment she shared her story, I thought to myself – “What the hell have you gotten yourself into, Kevin?” This was only my first day. There were 179 left. I wondered if I was suited to handle working at a school where a kid was a shooting victim. But just a few moments later, it hit me hard.

I was exactly where I was supposed to be. These kids needed stability. They needed people who truly loved them.

They needed people who believed in them while the world

To get respect, ‘ya gotta give it first Later that day, I was taken aback by a few things. Perhaps the most prominent was that the kids very rarely cared for new teachers. That was because each year, teachers came and left faster than the speed of light. I was one of around a dozen new faculty members that year – and the kids were tired of getting accustomed to teachers who were only using St. Ant’s as a stepping-stone toward working in public schools.

Respect from these kids had to be earned. It was nothing like when I was a high schooler at St. Peter’s Prep, just a mile away from where I now stood as a teacher.

It took me about three months before I fully got that respect from the kids (and there were time, before this, I seriously considered being one of those many teachers who gave up.) There was a fashion show around Dec. 1, 1998. My friend Cathie Downs was in town, visiting me from New Hampshire.

Going to a fashion show was probably the last thing she wanted to do. But she agreed to go and she probably wound up having a better time than I did. see COLUMN page

The latest comes from Essex County Sheriff Armando Fontoura, citing a recent “dramatic increase” in these crimes throughout that county and noting the need for motorists to start pro-

The crimes are occurring not only on local streets, but also in parks and reservations -- which are attracting more visitors as the weather warms up.

“Regretfully,” the sheriff noted, “victims have left not only personal valuables in plain sight in their cars but also the type of personal information that makes them vulnerable to identity theft.”

Typical of items left in plain view inside vehicles are wallets, purses, backpacks, cell phones and laptop computers. “These items, along with vehicle registration papers and insurance cards, are what every identity thief covets,” Fontoura said. “Your credit cards, driver’s license, Social Security number and other personal information are the essential information thieves need to create havoc for you via identity theft. They steal your life story then

devastating,” Fontoura continued. “Identity theft causes major issues for the victim, including financial loss, credit problems, benefit losses, legal problems if the thief is arrested and uses your personal information as his own, and the enormous amount of time it takes to fully rectify the damages made to your reputation.”

What can you do?

Employ some commonsense techniques.

“Roll your windows up to the top, lock your doors, park in a well-lit area and remove all valuables,” the sheriff said. “These valuables include cash, electronic equipment, papers with personal identifiers, such as mail and vehicle data.”

Also: “Never leave your garage door opener in the car, as this tool will give the thief access to your home.”

The sheriff noted that trying to hide items inside your vehicle is virtually pointless: “Once inside your car, the thief will go through your glove box and center console, flip over your floor

Fighting a lethal threat on our roads phone use behind the wheel.

In the U.S., in 2015 alone, 3,477 people were killed and 391,000 were injured in crashes involving distracted drivers, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Teens were the largest age group reported as distracted at the time of fatal crashes.

esponding to an 8% spike in New Jersey traffic fatalities in 2016, largely attributable to the increasing scourge of distracted driving, Attorney General Christopher S. Porrino and the Division of Highway Traffic Safety last week announced a new initiative to encourage and help the public report dangerous drivers to law enforcement.

The state’s #77 alert system will now be used to alert authorities to all forms of dangerous driving, from people operating a vehicle while looking at a cell phone to those driving while impaired.

The current system allows motorists and pedestrians who witness aggressive driving to call #77 to report it.

Those calls are answered by the State Police and are then forwarded to the local police agency that, in certain circumstances can respond to the call and, if the behavior is witnessed, issue a summons.

The protocol of #77 will remain the same, but those who witness dangerous driving of all types -- motorists texting, talking on a cell phone, etc. -- also will now be able to call the number.

In case you are wondering: “This does not mean that those who spot distracted drivers should text while driving themselves,” Porrino noted in a press release.

Drivers are urged to pull over in order to make the call, use a hands-free device or have a passenger in the vehicle make the call.

Pedestrians may call #77 as well.

In addition, if the license plate of the distracted driver is gathered, a warning letter detailing the time and place of the observed offense may be sent to the vehicle owner’s home, authorities said.

“We believe this will serve as a deterrent to future offenses,” said Porrino. “And if, for instance, it is a teen driver operating a parent’s vehicle, the letter may serve as a teaching tool, hopefully spurring better driving habits in the future.”

of #77, road signage along the state’s major highways will be changed and digital signage will also tout the effort, as will a public awareness campaign, including radio spots and ads on buses and billboards.

The new #77 initiative runs parallel with the state’s 2017 distracted driving crackdown, called “U Drive. U Text. U Pay.” As part of that campaign, more than 190 police agencies throughout New Jersey have received a total of $1,204,500 in federal grants to help with enforcement efforts. That program runs from April 1 through April 21.

In The Observer’s coverage area, the Lyndhurst, Belleville and Bloomfield police departments were each to receive a grant of $5,500, authorities reported.

Grants of $40,000 each were earmarked for the Hudson County and Essex County sheriff ’s offices.

With that money, the AG’s office said, law enforcement will be deploying plainclothes officers to watch for cell phone users at intersections and interchanges.

Marked vehicles can then be contacted to stop and cite drivers.

Also, departments will be using high-visibility patrol vehicles, such as SUVs, where officers in the passenger seat can look down into vehicles to spot distracted drivers for citation, the AG said.

That information, she said, will be available from folks who encounter, counsel and/ or treat young and old and those in-between for opioid dependency.

In Kearny, EMS responded to more than 45 incidents involving overdose victims, all of whom, she said, were revived by administering NARCAN nasal spray.

“Don’t wait until you need the answers,” the group’s flier says. “Arm yourselves with knowledge now.”

The Scouts toured the station, climbed aboard a fire engine, tried on equipment and learned about the training and responsibilities of first responders on 9/11 and every day in a large urban area.

After lunch and quiet reflection on the grounds of the 9/11 Memorial where twin permanent fountains pay tribute to the nearly 3,000 victims of the terrorist attack and 1993 World Trade Center bombing, Scouts toured the 9/11 Museum.

Signs of healing and optimism were evident in the National Tribute Quilt and

the Survivor Tree. The Scouts added their own tribute at the end of the museum tour on an interactive media board.

They wrote: “As Scouts, we are told to be men for others.

The hike was the brainchild of Scoutmaster John Reverendo, who designed and planned the more than seven-mile urban hike. This excursion is just one of many unique outings planned by the current leadership of Unit 305 as part of advanced adult training offered through a program called “Wood Badge.”

Kearny Bank building new NA branch Kearny Bank broke ground recently on a new building that will eventually replace its current North Arlington branch office. The new structure will be built on what is now a parking lot and upon completion, the older building will be razed to make way for parking.

“I am in discussion with my team about this matter currently. We have a proposal in hand from our contractor and will be coordinating the completion of this work very

On Friday, Katzer alerted Santos that, “repairs to the intersection were made this morning to address the immediate concerns. We have a proposal to make more extensive repairs when the temperature allows, but the repairs made

They’re ‘fine’ artists As part of the national Youth Art Month celebration, art teachers throughout the state are encouraged to submit their students’ best work in hope of having them selected for the New Jersey State Exhibit, which goes on display in the State House in Trenton. Blue Tide hope to remain with state’s elite volleyball teams

NA softball: Keeping the winning tradition alive

The North Arlington High School softball team won 15 games a year ago, maintaining a tradition of winning during softball season, a history that was well established four decades ago.

Carol Dorazio was part of that great winning excellence during her playing days with the Vikings in the early 1980s and still has that intense pride that comes with being a member of the NA softball alumnae.

Her daughter, Samantha Veneziano, was also a standout pitcher for the Vikings during her playing days about 10 years ago.

Together, they form the mother/daughter coaching tandem — mother is head coach, daughter assistant — that is trying to insure the winning ways remain a part of North Arlington folklore.

“She’s a good coach who knows her stuff,” Dorazio said of her daughter. “When softball season starts, it’s all that we talk about. We eat, drink, sleep softball.

It’s constant. We live for softball. I can’t think of anything else.”

Despite losing players at key positions to graduation, including slugging catcher Marissa Piscal,

who even pitched for a bit last season, Dorazio is confident that the Vikings will be a competitive bunch once again this spring.

“We couldn’t get out to practice much because of the weather,” Dorazio said. “So that made things a little difficult.”

Dorazio said that she knew replacing players like Piscal was going to be a chore, so she began last year when the replacements were performing on the junior varsity level.

“We started working on that last year,” Dorazio said. “We looked at our JV players and knew that they were going to be the varsity players this year.

We’re trying to be as competitive as possible and I think we have the ability to do so.”

Leading the way for the Vikings is junior pitcher Alyssa Miller.

Miller is a left-handed hurler, a rarity in local circles this year, so that gives the Vikings a little bit of an edge.

Miller has impressed Dorazio with her work ethic and ability.

“She’s doing very well so far,” Dorazio said.

ver the last three years, the Harrison High School boys’ volleyball team has enjoyed incredible success.

The Blue Tide has captured the last two Hudson County Tournament championships.

They have won two straight NJSIAA state sectional titles to advance to the state’s Final Four.

Last year, the Blue Tide won an unconscionable 37 matches while losing only five. The fifth loss came in the NJSIAA Tournament of Champions finale to Southern Regional, who also defeated the Blue Tide in the regular season after Harrison had won the first of three matches between the two state powers.

Needless to say, volleyball had become a major sport in Harrison over the last few

years.

Veteran coach Nick Landy wants to see if the Blue Tide can maintain those winning ways.

“It’s going to be tough, because we lost so much to graduation,” said Landy, who lost do-everything All-State performer Piotr Namiotko and standout setter Jimmy Vega. “We knew last year was a dream season for us. But we wanted to maintain our winning tradition. I just don’t know if we’ll see that anytime soon.”

It’s going to be hard without Namiotko, who is now playing at NJIT. Namiotko ended his Harrison career with more than 1,000 kills, one of just 20 players in New Jersey volleyball history to reach the historic plateau.

Vega, now at New Jersey City University, was the inspirational leader of the Blue Tide. It’s extremely difficult to

replace players of that caliber.

The Blue Tide graduated four key seniors in all.

“It’s always our goal to be as competitive as we can be,” said Landy. “But now, we have the targets on our backs.

Everyone wants to come and get us. We have to be ready to climb back into the driver’s seat. We want to have the same kind of success we had.”

Already, the Blue Tide has had to handle adversity.

Last Saturday, the Blue Tide was eliminated in the semifinals of the Passaic Valley tournament. A week prior, there were more obstacles, as Harrison lost three times in one day to St. Joseph (Metuchen), Hillsborough and Old Bridge.

“It was the darkest day we’ve had in a very long time,” Landy said.

on the reason why his team has sputtered out to a 3-3 record thus far. Five years ago, a 3-3 mark would have been reason to rejoice, but now, the Blue Tide has become victims of their own success.

“I think a lot of it is inexperience,” Landy said. “We only have three guys back from last year. The rest of the team is all new. So we have to find our way. I still think that when we get together and gel together as a team, we’re going to be

fine. We just got really comfortable the last couple of years.”

The job of the coach is to instill that winning feeling in his young team.

“We have to convince the kids that they can still play that way,” Landy said.

“Coming from the JV (junior varsity) level to varsity is so different. The speed of the game is so different for them.

Everything is so much faster.”

And there’s another glaring weakness.

“We don’t have Piotr

anymore,” Landy said. “We’ll never have another like him.”

Landy has hope for his team.

“I think they’re skilled,” Landy said. “I think they just need to get the confidence in themselves. If they can get that and eliminate the mistakes they keep making, then we will be fine. I don’t want anyone to think it’s a rebuilding year. We just haven’t been playing up to par so far.”

Senior Maciej Gaus is another outside hitter and returning starter. Gaus was the standout goalkeeper for the Blue Tide’s famed soccer program.

“He has the experience playing some big-time volleyball,” Landy said. “He’s been playing varsity since he was a sophomore. He’s one of our best players when he wants to play.”

Senior Michal Niczewski is the team’s middle hitter.

“He’s a powerful hitter, almost in line with Piotr,” Landy said. “He’s a key player for us. If he gets a good set, he crushes the ball. He’s an aggressive player.”

Senior Chris Crespo is the team’s setter.

“He’s not a bad setter,” Landy said. “It’s just that we had Jimmy (Vega) for so long.

Chris just needs to get experience. He’s coming along pretty well. He’s also not a bad server. He also helps with the blocks at the net. You wouldn’t think he could, because he’s only about 5-foot-4, but he has a good vertical (leap).”

Senior Daniel Cortes is an opposite hitter.

“He’s the new kid on the block,” Landy said. “He never played before. He’s still learning.”

Sophomore Kevin Molina is 211115A01 a middle hitter with good size at 6-foot-1.

“He can get up on the ball,” Landy said. “He’s a good server who also just needs

experience.”

The libero is sophomore Tristan Crespo, who is not related to teammate Chris.

“He’s been getting better and better,” Landy said. “We put him in a tough position and he’s handled it. No way did we think he would be a varsity player already. But he’s improved so much and been such a big help.”

Senior Jorge Penaherrera is the team’s resident defensive specialist.

“He’s been a good player for us,” Landy said. “He’s very unselfish. He’s also a good server.”

The Blue Tide will continue to be a force locally. They will shoot for a “three-peat” in the Hudson County tourney, although St. Peter’s Prep, state-ranked in the early going of the season, could become the favorite as the season moves on.

The Blue Tide might get an early crack at the Marauders next week when they both travel to the Rhody Invitational in Rhode Island.

“Right now, we’re not worried about our record,” Landy said. “We just want to play at the same skill level that we had in the past. If we can get used to that skill level and get ready for the county and state tournament, we’ll be fine.”

Landy likes going to the Rhode Island tourney.

“It helps our kids bond a little,” Landy said. “It did last year.”

Maybe the bonding is what the doctor ordered for the Blue Tide this time around as well.

“Alex is a good hitter,” Dorazio said. “She’s going to help us.”

Another player that will help the Vikings is freshman Kayla Francisco, who is another fast player.

“She has a lot of potential,” Dorazio said. “She’s playing the outfield and a little second base. She’s going to

play.”

Unfortunately, there’s one key Viking who will not be able to play this spring. Senior Melisssa “Missy” Torres, a long-time fixture in North Arlington athletics, has been on the sidelines after tearing her ACL last fall, forcing the affable Torres to miss the soccer, basketball and now softball seasons during her senior year.

“It was a big loss to us,” Dorazio said. “But to her credit, Missy comes to practice every day and she’s at every game. She has a very big presence with us. She even helps the JV coach out.

She’s just a phenomenal kid.”

Torres was North Arlington’s representative at Seton Hall University’s “Women in Sports Day” at the school in January.

Although the Vikings have started off slow, Dorazio is confident that her team will recover in time to make their presence felt in the NJICMeadowlands Division.

“The goal is to be competitive,” Dorazio said. “I think we have the team that can do that.”

With mother and daughter leading the way, the Vikings are bound to succeed.

North Arlington’s McKenna has memorable first week with Viking varsity

D

espite having never played varsity baseball before last week, North Arlington High School sophomore Eric McKenna was extremely confident that he was ready for the challenge.

“I played summer baseball last summer for the New Jersey Juggernauts (an 18-and-

under AAU travel team based out of Mahwah),” McKenna said. “It was pretty tough competition, but it prepared me.”

The 15-year-old McKenna pitched and played shortstop with and against guys who were generally three years older than him.

“I think I did pretty well, going up against guys who were older,” McKenna said.

“It got me prepared for varsity baseball.”

So the three-sport athlete was mentally prepared for the challenge of being a varsity pitcher and infielder.

“I always knew he had a lot of talent,” North Arlington head baseball coach Paul Marcantuono said. “I saw him play last year on JV (junior varsity).

With our shortstop (Manny Mora) graduating, I kind of figured that the kid to replace him would be McKenna. His arm was strong enough to

So when the 2017 season began last week, McKenna was more than ready and certainly confident.

“He only had a few innings in the preseason, so you really can’t tell what you have,” Marcantuono said. “He was essentially brand new to varsity.

He also just had seven at-bats in the scrimmages. But we figured he was one of our better athletes. And the kids all knew who the shortstop had to be.

The confidence part, no doubt, comes from within.”

Marcantuono recalls a younger McKenna giving the coach some advice in seventh grade, when Eric McKenna was watching his older brother, Ryan, play for the Vikings.

“He would say, ‘Coach, I would have done this or I wouldn’t have done that,’” Marcantuono said. “You could tell that he knew the game well. He was also one of those kids who could do anything,

play any sport.”

It was proven earlier this scholastic year when Eric McKenna was thrown into the fire of the North Arlington soccer team and scored 11 goals. It was also proven when McKenna went out for the NA bowling team without having bowled regularly since age 12 and fired a 205 average, earning All-Bergen County honors.

“I knew that he was going to contribute to this team this season,” Marcantuono said. “I just never dreamed he would be able to do it so quickly.”

McKenna had a phenomenal opening week of high school baseball. He pitched two scoreless innings against Bogota in relief, striking out four. In his first varsity start against Weehawken, McKenna fired a three-hitter, striking out 14 batters.

At the plate, McKenna had two hits, including a home run, and three RBI against Queen of Peace and had an RBI single in the Weehawken’s game for the game’s lone run continued next page

and the 1-0 Viking victory.

McKenna has also collected four stolen bases in three games.

For his efforts, McKenna has been selected as The Observer Athlete of the Week for the past week, the first such honoree of the spring scholastic sports season.

McKenna was asked how he’s able to keep sharp in the three sports.

“It’s pretty difficult, because I have to practice all three sports all year,” McKenna said.

“I’m able to balance my schedule pretty well.”

Even though he’s a soccer player in the fall and a bowler in the winter months, his favorite sport is baseball.

“Baseball is definitely my favorite, because it’s more of a team sport than the others,” McKenna said. “You can’t just rely on one person in baseball.”

McKenna was asked if he experienced the nervous jitters before his first start against a good Weehawken team.

“I was a little nervous, but after the first inning, I settled

in and just concentrated on throwing strikes,” McKenna said. “I was able to hit my spots well and I had good command of my breaking ball.”

Which was a feat in itself last Wednesday, considering it was a cold and blustery day.

“I was able to get a good grip on the ball,” McKenna said. “I was definitely pumped up for the game. It definitely gives me a lot of confidence, knowing that I can beat a very good team like Weehawken.”

And gets McKenna prepared for his next start, whenever that may be.

“Yeah, I’m ready,” McKenna said. “I’m more than ready now. Coach (Marcantuono) has given me a few days to rest, but he wants to keep me in the lineup, so I’ll play second or be the DH (designated hitter). I’m pretty confident right now.”

Marcantuono just hopes that McKenna develops into the player than Ryan McKenna was.

said. “If Eric gets that big and strong, watch out. He’ll be a force. Both have different baseball abilities. If Eric gets Ryan’s strength and power, he could become one of the really good ones. He’s going to contribute. He’s one player I don’t have to worry about. I think his confidence will help his abilities.”

Ryan McKenna is a student at Seton Hall University these days. He already knows about his little brother’s great week.

“I looked up to him, but I also knew that I wanted to be better than him,” Eric McKenna said. “I think he’s really surprised with what I’ve done.

I don’t think he was expecting it either.”

McKenna is no longer a surprise. Now, everyone knows what he’s capable of.

Hillside PD was to take custody of the suspect.

The child was turned over to a guardian. Family Services was also contacted regarding the use of a juvenile in a criminal act and reportedly “assured the KPD that they would open a case.”

There will be children who dreamed of a life at St. Anthony’s who will never get that chance.

And no matter where they ultimately wind up – public or private schools – they’ll get nothing in comparison to what they could have gotten at Friar High had the Archdiocese of Newark found a way to keep the place open.

Remember, this is the same archdiocese that justified spending $750,000 so the justretired archbishop could “fix up” his retirement home in the western part of the state.

I can’t help but think that if Joseph Cardinal Tobin, the new archbishop, truly knew the specific, intimate stories of how many lives St. Anthony’s saved, he might have given the school more time to raise the cash needed to keep the place open.

But the reality is this – the doors will close in June.And come September, lives will change.

It’s such a terrible way for Hurley’s career to come to a close. It’s such a sad ending to a school whose legacy was so much more than basketball.

It’s so sad that kids who otherwise might have found success in life will instead be written off, doomed.

With that said, I can’t help think: “What would Jesus have done?”

And I don’t think his answer would have been to close down a sacred place for so many – forever and ever.

obituaries@theobserver.com Thomas E. Miller Former Kearny resident Thomas E. Miller, a beloved husband, father, grandfather and brother, died at home surrounded by his loving family.

He was 64.

Tom was an award-winning videotape engineer who spent his career at ABC-TV. He was awarded an Emmy for outstanding individual achievement in 1981 for the ABC News Special on the negotiations to free the American hostages in Iran.

Then, in 1984, he was awarded two Emmys for his work on the Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.

He was also a part of the remote team that covered the Winter Olympics in Sarajevo that same year. In 2001, he was honored with a Peabody Award as part of the news

team that covered the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center.

He was an active member of the Mountain Lakes community. Like his father before him, who was assistant chief of the Kearny Fire Department, Tom was a member of the Mountain Lakes Fire Department and served as the chief of the volunteer force.

He coached his three children’s soccer teams in Mountain Lakes and served on the league’s board.

Tom was born in Kearny, the oldest son of the late Edward and the late Mary Rose Miller in a family of six children. He was a 1970 graduate of Essex Catholic High School and, in recognition of his life-achievements, was inducted into the Essex Catholic Hall of Fame.

Paterson University in 1974 and began working at ABC. He married his wife Maureen (Laugel) in 1976 and the family moved from Kearny to Mountain Lakes in 1987.

After his retirement from ABC in 2009, he stayed active in the community. He enjoyed his work for Habitat for Humanity and later as a crossing guard and a courier for the Board of Education in town. One friend and colleague remembered Tom as a man who was respected for his “thoughtful measured response to every situation” whose “intelligence, warmth, humor and decency informed” his approach to the people he interacted with.

Nutley youngsters in grades 2 through 6 are invited to participate in the Great Flashlight Egg Hunt, sponsored by the Department of Parks & Recreation, on Thursday, April 13.

More than 1,500 toy- and candy-filled eggs will be scattered around Reinheimer Park for the hunt. The park is on Bloomfield Ave. across from the Recreation Annex Building.

Children should meet by the playground equipment to begin the festivities. The egg hunt begins at dusk. A golden egg will be hidden and the lucky winner will receive a large chocolate-filled basket.

Parents are encouraged to stay with their children during the event. April 15 is the rain date.

She was predeceased by two sisters, Marie Fitzgerald and Kathy Scott.

Janet R. Howatson Janet R. Howatson (nee Reimer), 88, died Saturday, April 8, at Chilton Memorial Hospital in Pompton Plains.

Born in Newark, she lived in Kearny and North Arlington before moving to Pompton Plains in 2009.

In 1950, she received her teaching degree from Adelphi University in New York and worked as a teacher for the Kearny Board of Education for over 25 years until retiring in 2009.

Earlier, she worked in the same capacity for both the Belleville and North Arlington boards of education.

She was a member of the Kearny Woman’s Club.

Janet was the beloved wife of the late William Douglas “Doug” Howatson; the devoted mother of Patricia Duarte and her husband Dennis, Peter Howatson and his wife Susan and Brian Howatson and his wife Lisa; the cherished grandmother of Jillian Rosamino and her husband Stephen, Amelia Duarte, Amanda, Emily, Jonathan and Nicholas Howatson; and the adored great-grandmother of Lydia and Charlie.

Born in Newark, he lived in Kearny before moving to Pennsylvania.

She was 72.

Betty was born in Glasgow, Scotland, she lived there until she was 17. Most recently, she lived in Wayne the last five years and was formerly of North Arlington and Kearny.

She retired in 2010 from the Valley National Bank, Wayne, where she was an assistant vice [resident and paymentprocessing manager for 27 years.

Betty loved nature, children and animals – and was a second mom to many.

She is survived by her devoted husband of 44 years, Joseph J. Jr.; her loving son, Joseph J. III and his wife Jessica; her dear sister, Irene Mills; brothers, James and Robert Steen; and her cherished grandson, Joseph Cameron.

She was predeceased by her sister, Sadie Nicol and her parents, James and Sarah (Nielson) Steen.
