A news release issued Jan.17 by a spokeswoman from the Hall announced that the man for whom the Town of Kearny is named is one of 15 candidates voted into the Hall’s Class of 2016.

Belleville residents were invited to chat with local

police officers last Wednesday evening, Jan. 18, at the senior center, Franklin Ave. and Mill St. In one respect, it was a repeat of a similar meet-andgreet that Police Chief Mark Minichini arranged this past October at the same time at

four different eateries around the township.

“They were all well-attended,” the chief said, “but that was during the day. This time, we decided to have it at night and at one centralized location. And we added a forum on early warning signs of drug

abuse.”

Also on hand were representatives of Essex County Community Health Services who offered helpful advice and pamphlets.

From the Belleville PD, Det. Sgt. John McAloon and Dets. Rafael Reyes and Mat-

thew Dox, all assigned to the department’s narcotics squad, gave an enlightening but alarming report on a nationwide opioid epidemic that hasn’t sidestepped Belleville.

f Nutley property owners want to support a plan to relieve overcrowding in the township’s public schools, they’ll have to open their wallets.

Board of Education officials last Tuesday night, Jan. 17, unveiled a construction plan for additions and alterations to four schools projected to cost $68.9 million.

Offset a bit by an estimated state debt service aid, the revised total amounts to $66.5 million.

Assuming voters pass a public referendum to finance the plan, that would translate to an annual $347 tax bite on an “average” house assessed at $316,427 over the 25-year life of bonding the project.

But, “in order to reduce the tax impact, the district intends to split the bond issuance into two bond sales [which] would reduce the impact in the first year to approximately $183.50,” according to a BOE statement.

Yantacaw School, one of two schools with trailers to handle enrollment overflow, hosted the first of five “Town Hall” forums on the project slated through early next month.

Members of the school community can expect essentially the same presentation at each session. The final two were slated for Feb. 1 at Spring Garden School and Feb. 8 at Radcliffe School, all at 7 p.m.

As the plan now stands, construction would take place at Yantacaw School, Washington School, John H. Walker Middle School and Nutley High School.

Here are the key elements to the plan: • Walker School, currently housing grades 7 and 8, would get a three-story addition containing 20 new classrooms to accommodate the district’s sixth-grades who would move into the middle school, thereby freeing up “three to four classrooms” in each of the elementary schools, according to Schools Superintendent Julie Glazer.

The projected $36.7 million cost for the middle school construction would include new cafeteria and service kitchen, multipurpose room, bathrooms and reconfiguration of the administrative office wing.

Glazer said the sixth-graders would gain from the move by being “exposed to specialization at an earlier age” – such as science labs and industrial arts – which they would not experience at their current elementary school environments.

Sixth-graders and four “core teachers” would be housed separately in the new wing of the school building, she said, but “will mix for electives and possibly in math if they track into a higher

• Expansion at Yantacaw will provide six new classrooms, multipurpose room with kitchen, additional bathrooms, relocation of main office and secured entrance.

The trailers would go. Estimated cost: $15.6 million.

• Washington would get a three-story addition of six classrooms, bathrooms and an elevator in place of the existing trailers. Cost: $6.95 million.

• Nutley High would benefit from additional physical education/multipurpose space and a renovated media center/TV studio space. The current media center would be converted to four new classrooms and common learning areas. Cost: $8.75 million.

Plans for expansion were actually set in motion two years ago, BOE President Dan Carnicella said, when the township acquired the bike shop property next to the Walker School.

But since the receipt of a demographer’s report predicting that, “more than 500 new students would be coming into the district in the next five years,” the BOE concluded now was the time to act, he said.

Glazer echoed that assertion, noting that the district is “currently at capacity,” meaning that there is no more “available space for delivery of instruction.”

These are the current enrollment figures, as provided by the BOE last week: Yantacaw, 485; Washington, 567; Lincoln, 471; Spring Garden, 345; Radcliffe, 339; Walker, 631; and Nutley High, 1,232.

If nothing is done to remedy overcrowding, Glazer said that elementary school class sizes “will increase,” the

existing trailers “will remain” and “more trailers will be added to house additional students … as soon as 2021,” the district will face “moderate redistricting” at Yantacaw, Washington and Spring Garden,” newly registered children may be denied attendance at their neighborhood school; and academic performance will suffer.

Nutley Mayor Joseph Scarpelli told The Observer: “We know our schools are overcrowded and this has to be addressed …. Going to a middle school model that increases performance … is the best way to tackle the problem, done as economically as possible.”

Asked if he was endorsing the referendum, the mayor said: “First, I want to see feedback from the public.”

He had planned to attend last Wednesday’s Town Hall forum to hear the district’s presentation and gauge residents’ reactions.

Referring to the cost and tax implications, Scarpelli added: “I understand the need but it’s a big bite of the apple.”

Glazer said the BOE is looking at a prospective timetable that would have its members meeting in closed session on Feb. 13 to review the public’s input with the architect.

Then, on Feb. 27, the BOE would “vote on the final concept” for the project which, she added, “would require a referendum” to finance. First opportunity for such a vote would be September 2017, she said.

If that happens and if the question passes, “shovels could be in the ground by June 2018 and we would expect students to be in their new classroom spaces by September 2020,” she said.

No replacement yet for late Giordano KEARNY – s of last week, no candidate has yet surfaced to fill the Second Ward seat left vacant by the untimely death of Councilman Jonathan Giordano on Jan. 7.

State election law called for members of the municipal county committee of the same political party as the person whose seat was left empty – in this case, Democratic – to convene within 15 days of the vacancy to deliberate on a possible fill-in.

By law, the committee was to come up with the names of three nominees to present to the municipal governing body for consideration. The mayor and Town Council would then have an additional 15 days to appoint one of the trio.

This past Friday night, the municipal Dems committee did, in fact, meet at the American Legion hall but failed to pick three names, according to Mayor Alberto Santos, committee chairman.

Only about 25 of the committee’s 60 members showed up, one source said.

Santos told The Observer that the committee “adopted a motion [made by Larry Handlin] not to nominate candidates … because we did not have three qualified candidates ready and willing to serve.”

That happened, Santos said, largely because “we did not begin our search [for possible nominees] until after Councilman Giordano’s (Jan. 13) memorial service – it wasn’t enough time to identify three candidates who meet the qualifications for the office

and is appointed to the seat by the governing body, “the selected person will serve until the November 2017 general election at which [time] voters will elect a person to serve the remainder of [Giordano’s]

term from November 2017 until Dec. 31, 2018.”

One possible candidate has, however, unofficially surfaced.

and, more importantly, can continue Jon’s work and ably serve the residents of the Second Ward.”

Such a candidate must be “a resident of the Second Ward of Kearny, eligible to vote, and a member of the same political party as the person who vacated the seat,” Santos said.

Beyond that, however, Santos said, “the local Democratic Party … seeks candidates who, in addition to the legal requirements, are involved in the community.”

Absent the County Committee’s recommended nominees by the statutory deadline, Santos said, “the statute permits the Council and me to make a selection by majority vote without being limited by three names.”

The mayor and Council have until Feb. 6 to choose someone, Santos said.

Until that time, he added, “County Committee members can continue to be part of the process by recommending eligible candidates to the Council and me.”

t 1 p.m. last Wednesday, Jan. 18, Officer Luis Moran responded to Bergen Ave. and Elm St. to interview a 55-year-old Irvington woman whose pain medication had apparently been stolen. Police said the victim pointed out

as the likely suspect a male acquaintance, also from Irvington, who was standing with another man near a parked 2013 Acura.

As Moran approached the pair, the suspect -- despite the officer’s orders to stop -- entered the passenger side of the

car. Police said the driver, later identified as Wesley Carrion, 19, of Maplewood, put the vehicle in gear and headed off -- with Moran hanging onto the still-open passenger door. The officer was reportedly dragged for about 30 feet before managing to free himself.

Moran, who was not injured, returned to his patrol car, issued a BOLO and followed the Acura, which he found parked on the 100 block of Kearny Ave., with Carrion still at the wheel, police said. (The passenger had apparently fled on foot.)

With Officer Jose Resua and Sgts. Charles Smith and Joseph Vulcano as backup, Carrion was arrested and charged with aggravated assault on a police officer, eluding, reckless driving and disregarding a police officer’s signal.

••• Other recent reports from the Kearny police blotter included the following: Jan. 13 At 3 a.m., Officers David Bush and Jonathan Dowie pulled over a 2008 Subaru for running a red light and crossing the double-yellow line at the Belleville Pike and Elm St., police said. While waiting for driver Julian Keene, 25, of Newark, to produce his credentials, they reportedly observed burnt marijuana cigars in the car and then retrieved 12 more hand-rolled stogies from the driver’s area.

Keene was charged with possession of pot/paraphernalia, operating a MV while in possession of a CDS, careless driving, and the red-light violation.

••• The free air for your tires offered at Wawa set off a 10:45 a.m. dispute that led to one woman allegedly threatening another with a baseball bat. Police said a 38-year-old Lyndhurst woman was waiting to use the air pump, when a car driven by Telesha Austin, 29, of East Orange, cut the line. When the other woman objected, Austin reportedly exited her vehicle, yelling and swinging the bat -- luckily just hitting the ground with it. The Lyndhurst woman called 911. Sgt. Smith and Officers Resua and Phil Finch confiscated the bat and arrested Austin for simple assault, possession of a weapon and possession of a weapon for unlawful purposes.

Jan. 14 At 9:45 p.m., Officers Jose Castillo, Vic Girdwood and Jose Perez responded -- for the

second time -- to a disturbance in a residence on the 100 block of Duke St. and again encountered a reportedly hostile and uncooperative Damian Fumero, 31, of Kearny. While Castillo was attempting to interview him, Fumero allegedly pushed the officer in the chest and flipped over a kitchen table. He was eventually wrestled to the floor, cuffed, taken to headquarters and charged with two counts each of resisting arrest and aggravated assault on an officer. Police said he was offered, and refused, medical attention.

Jan. 17 On patrol in South Kearny at 12:30 a.m., Officers Bush and Dowie stopped a 2006 Chevy for inoperable brake lights and reportedly detected the odor of pot.

Despite the 30-degree temperature, driver Kyle Robe, 20, of Newark, removed his coat and left it in the car, which naturally led the cops to examine same. The garment was found to contain a marijuana cigar, and a plastic bag of the drug was behind the driver’s seat, police said. Robe was charged with possession of pot/ paraphernalia, operating a MV in possession of CDS, and the brake-light violation.

Jan. 18 Vice officers were passing Town Hall at 11:30 a.m. when they saw Jonathan Morales-Rios, 24, of Kearny, walking north on Kearny Ave. while apparently hand-rolling a suspiciouslooking cigar -- which he reportedly tried to swallow when they stopped him at Quincy Ave. Police said he eventually spit it out, after repeated advice to do so, and was charged with possession of pot/paraphernalia and hindering apprehension -- for attempting to destroy evidence.

Jan. 19 At 11:30 a.m., Vice officers found a group of teenage males huddled in an alleyway on the 200 bock of Maple St., detected the odor of marijuana and arrested Jason Dukhi, 18, of Kearny, for alleged possession of three burnt cigars and a plastic bag containing suspected pot. Police said the other boys were admonished at the scene and the Juvenile Bureau will likely follow up.

Small raises for 2 employee groups KEARNY – ome Kearny municipal employees are now members of the 1%.

No, they’re not part of the nation’s economic elite – they simply got a 1% pay boost under new labor contracts recently negotiated with the town.

The Kearny mayor and Town Council on Jan. 10 approved agreements with Local 18, Fireman’s Mutual Benevolent Association, and with the Association of Department Heads and Assistant Department Heads.

With those actions, the town has secured labor peace with each of its union-represented municipal employee units.

The lone remaining group of workers are exempt management employees.

Town Administrator Michael Martello said that he wanted to conclude contract talks with employee groups before his retirement later this year “and that’s what I’m doing.”

The new contract with firefighters runs from Jan. 1, 2017, to Dec. 31, 2020, and provides for an annual 1% pay increase for those Local 18 members at the top step of the salary guide.

Other members hired prior to July 1, 2012, will receive step increases as prescribed by a new salary guide for various employee groups escalating to a top pay of $106,998 while members hired on or after July 1, 2012, will follow a separate salary guide with the same maximum pay but will take longer to reach it.

The agreement also sets a six-step salary guide for the

position of fire official currently held by Juan Barroso that starts at $111,000 and runs to $127,000 after six years. It also fixes a $109,741 a year salary for fire prevention officer and provides for yearly 1% increases for 2018, 2019 and 2020.

Fire Chief Steve Dyl said the latter job has been vacant since the retirement of Chuck Kerr in July 2012. He said he’d be “looking to fill it” later this year after the department returns to nearly full strength later this year after newly-hired recruits complete Academy training.

This week, meanwhile, Dyl said he expected repair work to begin on the Davis Ave. firehouse by George Koustas Painting & Construction LLC of West Long Branch.

“They’ve pulled permits,” Dyl said. “They want to secure the chimney and put up scaffolding.”

A new four-year agreement with department heads and assistant department heads also runs four years with provisions for across-the-board wage increases of 1% each year.

Starting this year, one of three annual “mayor-designated” holiday days will be eliminated and employees eligible for that deleted holiday will, instead, receive a $300 stipend payable in the first period of the year. “Mayor-designated” holidays have been part of civilian labor contracts in Kearny since the 1970s.

Beginning Jan. 2, 2018, a second “mayor-designated” holiday will be eliminated and eligible employees shall, instead, receive a $600 stipend

in the first pay period of that year.

Also, the employee clothing allowance will be increased by $50 this year, to a total of $425

for 2017, and by an additional $50 next year, to a total of $475 for 2018.

Employee boot allowance will likewise be raised by $50

By Karen Zautyk ast year, as a symbol of support for their police officers, towns across New Jersey -- including our Observer communities – began painting blue lines between the double-yellow lines on some local streets. Perhaps the towns should be arrested – for the federal government deems these lines to be illegal.

In October, a Somerset County official apparently decided to ask Washington if the blue lines comply with something called the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices for Streets and Highways (MUTCD). It took the U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Highway Administration until December to reply (hey! they’re busy people!), and the answer was “no, they do not comply.” We share with you the actual bureaucratic bushwah in the feds’ letter of “clarification”: “Section 3A.06 of the MUTCD states that the pattern of a longitudinal double line shall be two parallel lines separated by a discernible space. For this space between the two lines to be discernible it must represent a lack of other markings.

Accordingly, the pavement surface must be visible in the space between the lines in the same way that it is visible outside the lines.

Blue Lines Matter!

“On this basis alone, filling in the gap in a double line, either partially or fully, does not comply with the provisions of the MUTCD. The exception herein is the use of black in combination with one of the approved pavement marking colors, as noted in Section 3A.05. “ … Blue as it applies to a pavement marking is exclusively reserved for the background color in the international symbol of accessibility parking symbol (see Figure 3B-22) and for the supplemental pavement marking lines that define legal parking spaces reserved for use only by persons with disabilities as provided in Paragraph 5 of Section 3A.05.

How could anyone misinterpret a thin blue line between two yellow lines in the center of a thoroughfare?

Do the feds actually think that someone will misread the blue line as indicating a “handicap” parking space and leave their car in the middle of Kearny Ave. or Ridge Road? That “road user” shouldn’t have a driver’s license in the first place.

Last week, two N.J. congressmen, Republican Leonard Lance and Democrat Bill Pascrell joined forces to address the ludicrous regulation, proposing federal legislation called the Blue Line Use Exception (BLUE) Act to permit the symbolic tributes.

A trifecta for Kearny cops

nteresting day for the Kearny PD on Thursday, Jan. 12.

Officers recorded three separate arrests -- simultaneously. Each incident occurring at noon.

One job was in South Kearny, where Officer Daniel Esteves came upon a

2002 Chrysler that had crashed at Hackensack Ave. and Rts. 1&9. When driver Tarique Holmes, 25, of Jersey City was asked for his credentials, he reportedly produced an ID-only license number and an expired insurance card.

Police said he was found to have a suspended license and two outstanding warrants: from Bayonne, $500, reckless driving; Elmwood Park, $200, DWI. He was arrested on those and for driving while

suspended and received summonses for being unlicensed and failure to exhibit current proof of insurance.

The second arrest came courtesy of Det. Michael Farinola, who had been investigating an Oct. 25 burglary to a commercial van on Midland Ave. -- tools and credit cards taken -- and had developed as a suspect Jason Morse, 36, of Newton. Arrest No. 3 was of Christopher Ochoa, 20, of Kearny, whom the Vice Unit observed walking in the area of Johnston and Passaic Aves. with what appeared to be a knife protruding from his waistband, police said. When the officers stopped him at Johnston and Lincoln Aves., a patdown reportedly found him to be in possession of a large, orange-handled machete. He was charged with unlawful possession of a weapon and possession of a weapon for unlawful purposes and was

taken to the Hudson County Jail.

4 years for ‘stolen’ car scam HARRISON – 27-year-old Harrison man has been sentenced to four years in prison for his role in a scheme to falsify an insurance claim on a $139,000 Bentley he purchased with his parents and then reported stolen after it was torched.

The penalty against John Jarzabek was handed down last week by Judge Susan Steele in Bergen County Superior Court in accordance with a plea agreement reached in August when the defendant pleaded guilty to second-degree insurance

fraud, N.J. Attorney General Christopher S. Porrino announced.

Authorities alleged that the scam was a family affair, also involving Jarzabek’s parents – Chester, 64, and Anna, 62 – and included accusations of conspiracy and other offenses for allegedly falsifying a car loan application to buy the pre-owned luxury vehicle.

In pleading guilty in August, the son admitted to misrepresenting to an insurance comNJAG pany that the car had been John Jarzabek stolen when it was not.

Chester Jarzabek was admitted into the Pre-Trial Intervention program in September. Charges against Anna Jarzabek are pending.

A bookkeeper for D.I.B. Leasing, Michael Ricciardi, 53, of Wayne, pleaded guilty to third-degree conspiracy for his part in the loan scheme and was sentenced last month to four years’ probation.

The general manager of the dealership, Hector Marquez, 44, of Monroe, pleaded guilty to second-degree insurance fraud. He was to appear in court last Friday and was expected to receive a staterecommended seven-year

prison term.

State authorities noted that some important cases have started with anonymous tips.

Bill gives Guard/Reservists shot at jobs A state Assembly panel on Jan. 19 gave the nod to legislation that would provide a second chance at employment for members of the National Guard or the Reserves who could not accept a position as a police officer or firefighter because of service to the nation.

The bill was sponsored by Democratic Assembly members Benjie Wimberly and Shavonda Sumter, both of Passaic; Angelica Jiminez, of West New York; and Troy Singleton, of Moorestown.

“Active duty assignments often derail plans for reserve and guard members who apply to join police or fire departments,” Wimberly said.

“When they are not fulfilling the part-time obligations of the reserves or the guard, we could use them here on our front lines as first responders and we should accommodate their obligations accordingly.”

The sponsors said the bill (A-1873) would allow someone who previously passed or subsequently passes a state Civil Service test for police officer or firefighter, but who was or is unable to complete any other requirements for employment because of active duty in the National Guard

or the Reserves, to have their name placed in order by score on a subsequent eligible list for the same type of position.

“Their service, experience and highly trained skill set is reason enough to afford them a second opportunity to finish their application to become a police officer or firefighter,” Singleton said. “This legislation strengthens teams of first responders in our communities by recruiting qualified service men and women.”

“We should eliminate the red tape barring servicemen and women from continuing the application process after they have fulfilled their military obligations,” said Jimenez, who serves parts of Hudson and Bergen counties. “This bill will simply make it easier for a New Jersey member of the reserves and guard to become firefighters and police officers.”

This bill states that the privilege would be available to guardsmen and reservists called to at least 30 days of continuous active duty after Sept. 11, 2001, and prior to the termination of “Operation Freedom Sentinel.”

“I’m very honored and proud that so many people voted, especially since this year the town of Kearny is celebrating its 150th anniversary and the New Jersey Hall of Fame mobile museum will be making a visit to Kearny.”

The Hall’s Kaithern confirmed that the mobile museum is slated to arrive in Kearny on Sept. 23.

As a mobile Hall docent, Toczko will presumably have a chance to introduce the general to visiting Kearny youths.

Another fan of the general, local author/Civil War expert William Styple, hailed the arrival of the general in the Hall as “great news,” particularly since the military figure “has a lot of support, from what I saw on social media, not just from local residents, but from throughout the state and the Civil War history community.”

And those supporters, Styple suggested, would have included the various branches of the general’s descendants, scattered through New Jersey, New York, California, Florida, Missouri and Virginia.

Styple, who has been researching a book on the general for many years, had the “great honor” to have attended last year’s Kearny family reunion, with about two dozen family members, in Cape May where Philip Kearny’s first wife Diana is buried.

Providing further context for why the general belongs in the Hall, Styple said the Kearny Irish-American family was “very prominent in the state,

dating from the 1600s, when the progenitors settled in Monmouth County. … New Jersey has been home of the Kearnys for almost 400 years.”

During the Civil War, Styple said, when Gen. Kearny was placed in charge of the New Jersey 1st Brigade, “his men were volunteers, the best young men of the state. He trained them, became like a father to them. He made them soldiers and they never forgot that.”

Survivors of battles fought under the general “paid tribute to his memory with statutes and other honors,” Styple said.

After he was killed by rebels during a skirmish at Chantilly, Va., Sept. 1, 1862, Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee took pains to ensure that his body, along with his horse, Bayard, was properly returned to the Union lines.

On Sept. 5, when the general’s remains were laid out for viewing at Bellegrove, his Kearny estate, “thousands came through to view the casket,” Styple said. “The next day, another procession came through, which somewhat delayed transport of the body for burial in Trinity Churchyard, New York.”

Half a century later, at the insistence of Medal of Honor winner Charles F. Hopkins, who had fought with the general in the 1st Brigade, Kearny’s remains were exhumed and reinterred at Arlington National Cemetery, where an equestrian statue was erected in his honor – one of only two such distinctions in Arlington.

But Belleville isn’t alone in dealing with this scourge.

“It’s crippling cities across the country,” McAloon said. And, he added, much of the supply is coming “across our border, from Newark.”

“If you know somebody with a drug problem, let us know about it,” he said, so that the department can get them help – from people like Roberto Alvarez, program monitor of Essex County’s Office of Addiction Services.

Alvarez, whose office may be reached 24/7 toll-free at 844-276-2777, said people who call – (all information is kept confidential) – can be referred to drug or alcohol detox and/or residential services at no cost.

Other resources available, according to the BPD, are N.J. Connect for Recovery, accessible at 855-652-3737, and DRS (Drug Rehab Services), reachable at 800-304-2219.

Noting that Gov. Chris Christie has made getting opioid abusers clean as a priority in his last year in office, McAloon said: “If you don’t want to see your husbands, brothers, sisters or other family members lost to drugs, call us or the county.”

He said the BPD will be setting up a confidential phone line for people to call the department for assistance.

“Users/abusers should make every effort to get help,” he added.

At the same time, he said, the BPD “is going to target drug dealers” for arrest and prosecution.

While the BPD saved 36 lives in 2016 by the use of the opioid antidote NARCAN, it only “masks” the underlying problem, McAloon said.

Between 2015 and 2016, the number of drug-related incidents has virtually doubled, according to the BPD. Narcotics arrests jumped from 188 to 371 and drug overdoses, from 17 to 36.

Dets. Reyes and Dox elaborated on how the crisis has mushroomed, with many victims starting out by overdependence on expensive pain reliever prescription drugs – the leading cause of accidental deaths in the U.S. – and then switching to a cheaper alternative – heroin.

“Right now,” Dox said, “you can buy a bag of heroin in Newark for $4.”

And, for abusers who’ve just come off a recovery treatment program but weaken and opt to take a refresher “hit,” the risk becomes even more dire, said Dox, because, “there’s a lot of bad heroin going around,” and the repeat abuser may not survive.

Just how pervasive has heroin become? Try this stat: “(Some) 4.8 million Americans have used it at least once,” Reyes said.

Warning signs of substance abuse are fairly evident, the detectives said. Nausea and/or loss of appetite, extended sleeping, abrupt changes of behavior, moodiness, highs and lows, flu-like symptoms like a constant runny nose, dizziness, dry

mouth, skin infections, slurred speech, constricted pupils, neglected appearance, hostility are among the most common, they said.

For parents, tough love can be essential to preventing their kids from falling into the drug abys, McAloon said.

“Parents should go through their kids’ phones, their rooms, cars,” he added.

Adults can just as easily fall victim to the perils of drug

overuse, even by accident, as recounted by Belleville resident Sue Hands, director of Essex County Community Health Services, who attended last week’s forum.

She said her sister, who lived in Newark, was thrown off a horse in 2008 and was prescribed opiates to relieve the pain from her injuries – but ended up exceeding the legal limit, took additional meds she got from others and combined those meds with alcohol – a recipe that, ultimately, led to her death in 2013 at the age of 52.

As if the drug situation wasn’t enough to worry about, the BPD also warned about scams targeting area senior citizens by those posing as “water department” employees or as PSE&G repairmen as a ruse to get inside homes to steal.

Chief Minichini said he hoped the larger message of the evening got through: “We want people to get to know the officers in their neighborhoods and we want our officers to know their needs. We want the public to know, ‘it’s not us versus them’ – we all breathe the same air.

QP hires Russo to take over beleaguered grid program The revolving door, also known as the Queen of Peace head football coaching carousel, has been spinning out of control for the last dozen years.

Over that time, an incredible nine men have tried to be the head coach of the Golden Griffins. Some have been prominent alumni – former player, former coaches. Others have been successful head coaches elsewhere.

With the exception of former player and coach Andy Cerco, who guided the Golden Griffins to their lone state title, the NJSIAA Non-Public Group 2 title over DePaul in 2004, and followed that year up with another state championship appearance in 2005, posting an 11-0 record before falling to St. Joseph of Hammonton in the title game, there really hasn’t been much success at QP. There has only been one winning season – that being the 6-5 record the Griffins had under former head coach and alumnus Bob Kearns in 2013.

So many have come to QP and tried to inject life into the football program and none have been able to get the job done.

He’s the latest in the line of head football coaches at QP, jumping aboard the carousel as it spins in its worst time.

The Golden Griffins were 0-6 last year under wrestling coach Scot Weaver and had to disband the season after those first six games because of a lack of healthy players. In fact, the Golden Griffins had only 14 healthy bodies for their last game against Elmwood Park. The team scored only four touchdowns all season.

So the 36-year-old Russo comes to QP after a solid run as an assistant at Paramus Catholic, helping the Paladins collect two Non-Public Group 4 titles in the last three years.

And like others that preceded him, Russo is confident that he can turn the program around, win some games and stick around for a while.

“I had been called before about the job,” Russo said. “This year, it’s time.

I wasn’t looking for another job. I was happy at Paramus Catholic.

Thousands of points, memories as Kearny hoop greats return

O

f all the hundreds of boys’ basketball players that have played for Kearny High School over the years, only eight reached the prestigious milestone of scoring 1,000 points.

It means that Kearny’s 1,000-point club is an elite organization with very few members, dating back to the late Bob Kirk, who was the first Kardinal hoop standout to attain his 1,000th point in 1944.

Last year, current Kearny head coach Bob McDonnell thought it would be a good idea to get the seven surviving members of the Kearny 1,000-point club together.

Other schools in New Jersey have been embracing their history by honoring their all-time greats. Believe it or not, Kearny does have a solid basketball tradition – and these eight men personify the legacy of Kardinal hoop history.

“We’re trying to get some tradition by bringing the alumni back,” McDonnell said.

“I wanted to get some recognition for the 1,000-point scorers and build a rapport between the older players and the current team. If we were able to do that, then more people might become interested.”

Last Friday night, McDonnell, the Kearny athletic program and booster club welcomed back six of the seven surviving members of the Kearny 1,000-point club for a pre-game reception prior to the Kards’ game against Cliffside Park.

for laughter, for pride.

One thing’s for certain: All of them knew their exact point totals, even though some haven’t played for the Kardinals in more than four decades.

It shows how much pride they all have in being a member of such an elite group.

Ralph Landi (Class of 1972) recently retired after more than 25 years serving the youth of his hometown in the Kearny Recreation department. He didn’t hesitate when asked his point total. He knew right away it was 1,095.

“I was on the team that played the last season at Washington School,” said Landi, noting that the court at the old school wasn’t a conventional size and if you took one step wide on a corner jump shot, you were out of bounds.

Of course, there was no such thing as the 3-point field goal back then. “You couldn’t take a step in the corner.”

When Landi heard of the reunion of the 1,000-point scorers, he was elated.

“I was very surprised,”

Landi said. “We haven’t had anything like this before. It was a good idea. Maybe it might bring some people back and see these kids play.”

Landi said that he was pleased to be a teammate of former Boston Red Sox relief ace Bob Stanley during their days at Kearny High. Stanley was the pitcher for the Red Sox in Game 6 of the 1986 World Series, when the Mets mounted their miraculous comeback in the bottom of the 10th inning, capped by the Bill Buckner error on Mookie Wilson’s slow roller to first base.

“He was a good teammate of mine,” said Landi, whose late brother, Mike, was a twotime All-State football player at Kearny in the 1960s who made the Star-Ledger’s AllDecade team for their Team of the Century package.

Landi said that he vividly remembers a tough loss to East Orange, when East Orange was state-ranked.

VIEW from Peace, so I was a little hesitant at first. But then I started talking to a bunch of people and listening to what they had to say. I listened to the people at the school and heard about all that’s going on. I heard about all the plans for the school and got encouraged.

Added Russo, “They have a management team in place.

It’s very business-like, like they’re running a business and a school. I’m behind them 100%.”

Russo was asked if he was sure the school would remain open after this school year.

After all, it was over the summer where the school had to unleash a massive $1.5 million fundraising campaign from alumni just to keep the doors open.

“If I wasn’t sure that they would be open, I wouldn’t have taken the job,” Russo said.

“I wanted to make sure for myself, that I felt good about the school. Now, I have no doubt about it whatsoever.”

Russo knows that he’s walking into a hornets’ nest, that the program will need mas-

sive reconstruction to even be competitive. First and foremost, the program needs players. They cannot survive with participation numbers in the 20s and teens.

“Absolutely, we have to build it,” said Russo, who already has an assistant coaching staff in place, one that includes former NFL linebacker Blake Costanzo, who was an All-State player at Ramapo and later Lafayette.

“I’m really excited about that aspect, building it. It’s not going to be easy, that’s for sure. I have to build a freshman class.

I have to have a full weight training program. I have to have the right system to get our players into college.”

Russo explained the reasons why he’s so optimistic.

“People told us (at Paramus Catholic) that we could never beat St. Joe’s (Montvale) or Don Bosco and we did,” Russo said. “If you have the right players who are willing to put the work in, it can happen. I also am encouraged by the people at the school who are enthusiastic and passionate. I know it can be done.”

“With the new administration in place, we are going to get out there and get the word out,” Russo said. “We’re going to talk to people, to get out there and show people what we’re all about. The school

has a very clear plan moving forward. If people knew what we were all about, then that’s half the battle.”

Russo said that he’s reached out to people of the past, like the aforementioned Cerco and prominent alumnus and attorney Tony Riposta, to ask for guidance.

“Coach Cerco (who is also an attorney) is willing to help us out,” Russo said. “These are great people and they’re super supportive. We all want to do it together.”

Russo said that he’s already received calls from area youth football coaches, offering assistance.

“They’re excited, because they’re getting to know me and my staff,” Russo said. “Everyone has the same concerns.

We have to show them, prove to them that we’re changing.

I think QP has a pretty bright future. I know other parochial schools have made comebacks.

We just have to get to work.”

Russo said that he can draw strength from his high school coach at Paramus Catholic, Mike Campanile, whose two sons, Vito and Nunzio, have become successful coaches.

“Mike Campanile was hard to play for, but I learned so much,” Russo said. “He makes you believe that anything can be done, even when people tell you that you can’t do it. We have good kids here. We just have to get this rolling.”

Russo has a lot to do to get the Griffins just to stand on their own, before any rolling takes place.

At least Russo has done the right thing right away. He’s embraced instead of antagonizing the deeply faithful Golden Griffin alumni and parents. That’s the first successful step.

Bob Reto (Class of 1975) also knew his precise point total – 1,121 points. Now residing in Verona and the owner of a small consulting business firm, Reto goes one step closer when it comes to the famous Red Sox reliever.

“Bob Stanley is my cousin,” Reto said. “We didn’t play together, but he came back to see me play against East Orange and it was my best game ever. Bobby screamed at Ken Young, East Orange’s best player, saying, ‘You can’t stop him.’ And Young couldn’t.

That stuck in my head. Bobby remembers it as well. He said.

‘It’s your turn.’”

Reto went on to play at New Jersey Institute of Technology for two years. His father, Joe, was the principal at Franklin School in Kearny for years.

“It was a real nice evening for my family and I,” Reto said.

“I’m thankful they did it.”

John Latka (Class of 1977) was a teammate with Reto who knew right away that he scored 1,255 points before heading off to play NCAA Division I basketball at Tennessee Tech with Kearny teammate Jake McNish.

“It’s always good to see everyone again,” said Latka, who is the senior vice president of electric and gas operations for PSEG. “I got to see some of my teammates. I think it’s such a great accomplishment to reach 1,000 points. It’s great that they had a night like this.”

When asked if he had one memory that stood out, Latka replied, “My teammates. We had some great times and good games back then. The Big Ten (Conference, where the Kardinals participated) was the best. Every night was

ohnathan Leiras doesn’t exactly live the life of a conventional high school student.

You see, Leiras is a Harrison resident, but he attends High Tech High School in North Bergen.

It means that Leiras has to get up earlier than most and get on a bus to go to school nine miles away.

“It’s not that tough,” Leiras said. “But it can be challenging. It has its days. But it was a decision I had to make, because it was the best opportunity for me for my education.”

Leiras is already taking broadcasting lessons, a field that he may pursue after college.

Leiras is also a fine basketball player, but since High Tech no longer offers high school athletics, Leiras is able to play for his home district, in this case Harrison.

So Leiras comes home from school, then heads to practice at Harrison High School. Most of his Blue Tide teammates have already gotten a head start, because they can practice while Leiras is still making his way home.

“It’s not that tough,” Leiras said.

Leiras gets his head start before school begins, long before the sun even rises.

At 4:45 a.m., Leiras gets up and heads to a local gym, driven there by his mother, Natalie.

“There’s no one there, so I can get my shots in,” Leiras said. “I shoot for about an hour or so. I try not to get too tired, because I have the rest

of the day. It was my own idea. I just do it. It’s what I have to do to get better. I just go and do it. I thought of it on my own.”

That’s Leiras’ daily routine. Get up, go to the gym to practice basketball, go to school, come home on a school bus, head to practice and then come home to do schoolwork, which Leiras takes very seriously, evidenced by his 3.6 grade point average.

Leiras is in the middle of his junior year of high school, right at the time when most high school students make their first impressions on prospective colleges.

And Leiras is certainly making his mark, obviously in the classroom at High Tech, but also on the hardwood with the Blue Tide.

Leiras has been totally on fire over the last few weeks, averaging 25.2 points over the last seven games. He scored 34 in a game against Secaucus and had 32 against University Charter of Jersey City last Saturday.

Over the last three games, Leiras has scored 25, 25 and 32 points,

so he’s definitely hit a groove.

For his efforts, Leiras has been selected as The Observer Athlete of the Week for the past week.

New Harrison head coach Bill Mullins never saw Leiras play in person before taking the job, but he certainly heard of the sharpshooter.

“People told me that he was a pretty good player,” Mullins said.

“He’s very quick and has a very good outside shot.

He has a lot of talent. He can go by people. We want him to be the one taking the shots. He also has tremendous natural talent.”

Mullins said that Leiras has won two games this season with last second heroics.

“We were down by two against Hawthorne Christian and Johnathan hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to win it. We were down by 19 at one point and came back to win. Then against New Milford, Johnathan made a 4-point play to win it, a 3 and the free throw. He has the skill to do it.”

Leiras said that he got ready to play this season by playing AAU basketball last summer for the Athletes Plus program out of Perth Amboy.

“It really helped build my confidence tremendously,” Leiras said. “I just kept working on my own game. I had to be ready with the new coach. We got along fine.

I knew I was prepared for the season. I felt ready. I got used to the style of play.”

posted a surprising 10-4 record so far this season.

“I knew we would be able to do it,” Leiras said. “We have a good team. I’m happy, but I’m not satisfied, because I know I can play much better. I have to be more efficient.”

Leiras is hoping that his

scoring explosion can open some eyes with college recruiters and it will lead to a possible college scholarship next year.

“That’s the goal,” Leiras said. “I want to play in college. I hope I get the chance.”

“I think he can play at the

college level,” Mullins said.

“He’s only a junior, so he has room to grow. We’ve been winning, but we’ve been in a few tough losses lately. We push the ball up the floor and try to put pressure on people.”

Mullins likes Leiras’ demeanor.

“He’s very quiet,” Mullins said. “He doesn’t say too much. But he’s a very good athlete. He has quick feet and has the ability to play good defense.”

Mullins said that Leiras is closing in on the 1,000-point milestone and should reach the total sometime this

week.

Leiras is working on becoming a point guard.

“That’s probably where I’ll play in college,” Leiras said.

So there will be ball handling drills going on before the crack of dawn as well.

Basile steps down as Nutley grid coach

By Jim Hague Observer Sports Writer When Tom Basile left the head coaching position at Barringer High School in 2004 to join his friend Steve DiGregorio on the Nutley High School football coaching staff, he never dreamed he would remain in Nutley for 13 years.

“With Steve, I was just doing him a favor at the time,” Basile said. “I never realized I’d get so emotionally involved in the program. One year became three and three became six and so on. I also never envisioned becoming the head coach.”

When DiGregorio left the head coaching position at Nutley five years ago, Basile stepped in and filled in admirably for DiGregorio, taking the Maroon Raiders to the NJSIAA North Jersey Section 2, Group III playoffs three times.

But Basile has decided to step down as the head coach of the Maroon Raiders, citing family reasons and travel obligations from his northern Bergen County home. Basile has a 5-year-old daughter that needs to be taken to and from school and other extracurricular activities.

“I want to be around my family as much as possible,” said Basile, who posted a 26-24 record with the Maroon Raiders, including a 3-7 record in 2016. “Raising our daughter has become a tremendous burden on my wife, picking our daughter up from school, dance classes, what have you. It was a family motivated decision. I’m leaving the Nutley program in great shape.”

Many of the key personnel, including running back Nick Mainiero and quarterback Josh O’Neill, return in the fall, so the new head coach will get a good head start.

“Seven starters are coming back,” Basile said. “We started a couple of sophomores last season. That team is going to

As for Basile, he will see if there are other opportunities for him closer to his home.

“I’ll take a look,” Basile said.

“I think I have some more coaching in me.”

“Making the states three times is something I’m very proud of,” Basile said. “I also have the great memory of going to the Meadowlands (MetLife Stadium in 2009) and the state final then (against Morristown). For the last two seasons, we won divisional championships and I’ll certainly hold them dear.”

Basile thanked Nutley High School Principal Denis Williams and Athletic Director Joe Piro for their support over the years.

“Denis was a good adviser to us,” Basile said. “Joe had a lot of vision and no one bleeds Maroon and White more than him.”

“The prescription opioid and heroin epidemic continues to devastate communities and families across the country – in large part because too many people still do not get effective substance use disorder treatment,” said Michael Botticelli, director of the National Drug Control Policy.

“That is why the president has called since February 2016 for $1 billion in new funding to expand access to treatment. Congress finally acted on the president’s request. The Administration will work to get this new funding out to States as quickly as possible to make sure that every American who wants treatment for an opioid use disorder is able to get it.”
