Lucky 13 join Kearny’s Bravest

If she makes it through training, Haley Girdwood will become only the third woman to have attained membership in the Kearny Fire Department.

A Kearny High School alumna, Girdwood was one of the 13 most recent recruits to be hired as probationary firefighters by the town’s governing body, effective last Wednesday, at a starting pay of $33,000 a year.

Also among the new faces are Steven A. Dyl, son of Kearny Fire Chief Steven M. Dyl; and George King III, son of Kearny Deputy Police Chief George King.

Several weeks into the school year, the once dormant (except for CCD classes) grammar school is now thriving with nearly 350 students – and only a handful are from towns other than Kearny.

Manley took The Observer on a tour of the “new” school in a pretty “old” building.

ore than a decade after several south Bergen communities were battered by aborted meadows development plans advanced by EnCap and Cherokee, North Arlington is taking another crack at prospective gold in them thar marshes.

Last Thursday night, its governing body authorized its redevelopment consultant, RCM Ceberio LLC, and its redevelopment committee “to negotiate an agreement with HC Development LLC (an affiliate of The Hampshire Companies) for the development/ redevelopment of properties within the Porete Ave. Redevelopment Area.”

The redevelopment area, a narrow strip of land located in the borough’s industrial southeast corner, is bounded by the rail line to the east, the Bayonne/Jersey City water supply easement to the south, the ridge line and Schuyler Ave. to the west and Disposal Road to the north.

As defined by the borough’s amended Porete Ave./BCUA Redevelopment Plan, the target tract has 55 parcels spread over about 120 acres, with a mix of vacant and underutilized uses.

Not included in the mix, said RCM principal Robert Ceberio, is longtime occupant Clayton Block, a masonry manufacturer, which, because of the nature of their operation, would be “hard to relocate,” Ceberio said, so “we left them alone.”

Maximum lot size is defined as three acres, maximum lot coverage as 60%, maximum building height as 60 feet, minimum floor area as 40,000 square feet in the principal structure and minimum building setbacks as 30 feet.

Ceberio said that The Hampshire Companies was the only company that responded to the borough’s RFQ (Request for Qualifications) for prospective redevelopers.

He said other firms “passed because no land condemnation is allowed in the borough’s redevelopment proposal” and those companies felt they could be handicapped if they felt they needed that tool in assembling development

KPD: It wasn’t just a bad dream S

hortly before 5 a.m. on Oct. 7, a resident of the 400 block of Elm St. notified Kearny police that he had been awakened from his sleep by a burglar rummaging through his bedroom.

The thief reportedly fled with a watch, iPhone, iPod Touch, headphones, phone charger – and a container of Flonase. (We do not make this stuff up, okay?)

Officers Jonathan Dowie and Dave Bush went to the scene and interviewed the 27-yearold victim, who described the suspect as a tall man in his mid-20s, wearing all-black clothing. Police said the victim also thought he recognized the culprit and believed he might be from Harrison.

A BOLO was broadcast, and Officers Chris Manolis and Sean Podolski spotted the suspect on Davis Ave. near West Hudson Park. Other units responded, and Christopher Lindsay, 27, of Harrison, was detained and questioned and reportedly implicated himself in the crime. In addi-

tion to the stolen property, police said he was also found to be in possession of pliers, wire cutters, a screwdriver, a knife, a box cutter and a piece of sharpened metal.

Lindsay was charged with burglary, theft by unlawful taking and possession of burglar tools. Police said he also had two outstanding warrants: $500 (full), Jersey City, theft; and $50,000 (full), Kearny, robbery.

During his booking at headquarters, the suspect reportedly complained of not feeling well (congested nasal passages?), and Kearny EMS was summoned to assess his condition. After which, he was sent to the Hudson County Jail.

of a nail salon who advised him that two juvenile females had entered the shop, and when they left, she discovered her wallet was missing from her purse. Farinola spotted the girls on Afton, notified HQ , and followed them north on Maple St., where they were detained by the detective and other officers.

Police said the victim was brought to the scene and identified the suspects, one of whom reportedly turned over $195 she had hidden in her clothing. The girls, ages 15 and 16 and both from Newark, were charged with conspiracy and theft.

They were turned over to their parents, and their school was also notified.

Oct. 8 Sgt. Joseph Vulcano was driving south on Kearny Ave. at Boyd St. at 11 a.m. when a 2011 Mercedes reportedly made an illegal U-turn directly

in front of his marked patrol car. (We do not make this stuff up, okay?) Police said Vulcano made eye contact with the driver and signaled him to stop, but he sped up, heading north on the avenue.

Vulcano then made his own U-turn, activated lights and siren and pursued the fleeing vehicle, which, police said: drove onto the sidewalk/driveway at QuickChek, turned east on Bergen Ave., north on Devon St. to Garfield Ave., east on Garfield to Davis Ave., north on Davis to King St., east on King to Schuyler Ave. and then south on Schuyler.

On Schuyler near Bergen, the Mercedes got bogged down in traffic, and Vulcano pulled his patrol car in front of it and arrested driver Edwin Peralta-Franco, 24, of Kearny, who received a summons for reckless driving and was charged criminally with eluding.

Oct. 10 Pursuant to an ongoing marijuana-distribution investigation launched in September, Vice officers were at Davis and Garfield Aves. at 9 p.m., when they reportedly observed a hand-to-hand drug transaction between two Kearny men.

The detectives followed the suspected buyer, Mark Yakabofski, 48, stopped and confronted him and found him to be carrying a cigarette pack full of pot, police said. He was arrested on drug/paraphernalia possession charges.

Police said the officers then went to the apartment building that the alleged seller, Arthur White, 28, had entered, arrested him, obtained consent to search and recovered a large Ziploc bag of marijuana, numerous small plastic bags, a digital scale and $105 in currency. White was charged

HPD: Gas station robbed again HARRISON –

local service station targeted by robbers earlier this year has been hit once again.

Police said they were called

to the Delta gas station on the 500 block of Frank E. Rodgers Blvd S. near Essex St. at 12:42 a.m. last Wednesday, Oct. 12, on a report of an armed robbery.

told police he was sitting in a chair just outside the station office when he was approached by two men from Essex St. and FER Blvd.

headlock, then both pulled him inside the office while one pointed a black handgun at him, police said.

The bandits then began punching him and demanding money and took his Samsung tablet valued at $200 along with $600 of the station’s cash from a box inside the garage, the attendant told police.

After taking the items, the attendant told police, the men fled on foot towards Railroad Ave. and Taft Place. He then lost sight of them.

Police said both suspects were described as black, about 6 feet, wearing darkcolored clothes, fingerless gloves and face masks covering their mouths.

Police broadcast that information to HPD units who canvassed the area but found no one matching the description given.

The attendant was treated

by EMS for swelling to his face resulting from being roughed up by the bandits, police said.

About 15 minutes after the robbery, police said they were contacted by a man who told them he was traveling north on FER Blvd. from the PATH station when he observed a commotion at the Delta station and spotted two men

running from the station get into a red SUV and drive north on FER Blvd. The witness provided police with the car’s New Jersey registration while noting that the SUV was last seen turning west onto Harrison Ave., heading towards Newark.

Police said a check of the registration came back to a 2000 red Ford Explorer whose owner was listed in state records.

Surrounding police departments were notified via SPEN with a description of the vehicle and suspects, police said.

Harrison Police Det. Lt. David Doyle said the Delta station has been victimized by robbers three times this year so far. “We don’t think this job is related to the other crew who robbed them previously,” he said, because it did not fit the modus operandi of the prior holdup men.

The most recent prior attack came at around 4:30 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 4, when, according to police reports, three men emerged from what was described as a small red BMW SUV, hit the attendant on the head with a handgun and drove away with cash, cigarettes and cigars taken from the station.

I thought it would be good to revisit a story I wrote a year ago about a thrift shop that’s making a huge difference in Kearny.

Many have been in a situation like this one — especially since 2009 when the Great Recession hit.

You have an upcoming job interview. After all this time — someone finally bit and called you after you sent in your resume. But then it hits you. You’re excited. You’re ready to show how great you are to a possible new boss.

And when you go to choose what you’ll wear — boom!

Nothing appropriate.

How are you going to look your best? You can’t afford to

go out to get a brand-new outfit for the interview — you’re lucky there’s enough gas in the car to get to the interview in the first place. Been there?

There now, perhaps? Worry no more.

That’s because Heaven ¢ent, a thrift shop operated by a tremendous group of volunteers, is up and running — and has been since June 2011 — on the second floor of the First Presbyterian Church of Arlington (you know, where the PBGC is) directly across Kearny Ave. from St. Stephen’s Church on the corner of Laurel Ave. The shop was the brainchild of the church’s then interim pastor — Deb Oosterbam — as an outreach to those who need to buy clothing and other items at a seriously reduced rate — and also to help fund the church’s food pantry, the need for which continues to grow these days.

REMEMBERING MICHAEL BRANIN JR.

Branin family. The facility is actually named the “Michael F. Branin Jr. Memorial Soccer Field.” Many, if not all of the fields and playgrounds in our town, are named to honor veterans and in particular, those that gave the ultimate sacrifice of their lives.

The Branin family has called the Town of Kearny home for 70 years. We grew up not far from the field,

at 18 Chestnut St. Our Dad would bring us to soccer games played at the Nairn Field, which is now the site of the Kearny Shoprite and BJs complexes.

It is fitting that the Passaic Ave. field is named in Michael’s honor since it is part of his old stomping grounds.

The family placed a short biography of Michael and a copy of his Bronze Star award on the back of the sign announcing the field, in hopes that our young people might be inspired by his sacrifice for his country.

According to police, the motorist -- identified as Samuel Sapey-Adablah, 51, of Irvington -- had apparently suffered some type of medical emergency while driving and crashed into the back of the truck. The impact forced the entire front end of the Impala under the trailer, igniting the car’s engine.

When he was rescued by the officers, police described Sapey-Adablah as conscious but disoriented. He reportedly did not suffer any burns.

The victim was taken to University Hospital in Newark for treatment.

On Monday, Oct. 3, at 3:10 p.m., the Kearny Fire Department received a call that there were people in the Passaic

River at the foot of Laurel Ave. The KFD arrived to find that it wasn’t people; it was a poodle. The dog, out for a walk with its owner, was reportedly either off the leash or had broken free from it when

it jumped in the water and began swimming across the river.

The KFD launched a boat, began a search, and eventually found the poodle on the Newark shore, about a quarter-mile south of where it had entered the water, Fire Chief Steve Dyl said. Unfortunately, as the rescuers were approaching, the dog ran up the riverbank and onto Rt. 21, where it was hit by a car.

Dyl said that driver stopped, and so did another, who picked up the injured

pup, checked the info on its tag and called the owner. That motorist then drove the dog to the crew house near the Belleville Pike, where the owner was waiting.

The poodle was taken to the nearby Arlington Dog & Cat Hospital, where, tragically, it succumbed to internal injuries, Dyl reported.

The chief summed up the sad saga in two simple words: “We tried.”

When the rookies are ready for action, Dyl said the KFD will top out at 101 – just “one short” of the maximum strength permitted by town ordinance for the department which, over the past couple of years, has been battered by a string of retirements by veteran members.

And that pattern could well continue during 2017 when,

according to Dyl, 15 members of the KFD – a combination of rank-and-file and superiors – will have logged 25 or more years and will thereby be eligible to go.

For now, though, Dyl is thankful that the mayor and Town Council have supported his request for additional personnel to fill the gap in the ranks.

It took many months to get to this point, Dyl said, given that Kearny had to sort through some 500 applications for the 13 slots. That number was somewhat narrowed to 293 after applicants took a physical exam for firefighter and then “we went from there.”

Here are some capsule bios on the new members: Girdwood, 22, attended Atlantic University and Eastwood College, Nutley, attaining a degree in health science. She worked in medical billings for Med Assets-Precyse in Saddle River before starting her firefighting career. Her uncle, Victor Girdwood, has been a KFD member since March 1999 and her cousin, also named Victor Girdwood, was hired as a Kearny police officer in April 2015.

Dyl, who just turned 20, is a Kearny High graduate now in his third year at Stockton University where he is pursuing a degree in engineering. His dad’s reaction to his appointment: “It’s great. It makes me feel proud.” But, at the same time, the chief said, his son shouldn’t expect to coast. “He’s got to earn his way – same as anybody else. He’s got to pull his weight.”

King III, 23, a Kearny High alum, studied liberal arts at Bergen Community College for two years and worked as a security guard for River Terminal in Kearny and for the federal TSA (Transportation Security Administration) at Newark Airport. His dad said his son had taken Civil Service tests for various law enforcement and firefighter jobs. Fact of the matter is, said the elder King, “My dad [a onetime deputy police chief] was on the fire list before he was hired as a policeman and I’d gotten called for an interview for the fire department but I was already on the police force at the time.”

Piscal, 22, originally from North Arlington, where he serves as a volunteer firefighter, has taken fire science courses at New Jersey City University and worked for

Hayes Safe & Lock in Kearny.

McAllister, 34, is a Kearny High graduate who has taken classes in finance and marketing at Montclair University and worked as an assistant manager for N.Y./N.J. Rail in Jersey City. He has served as a soccer coach at St. Peter’s Preparatory School, Jersey City. His uncle, Rab Logan, is a retired Kearny firefighter and his cousin, Paul Logan, was hired by the KFD about two years ago.

Gurkas, 23, is a Kearny High alum who has a biology degree from Rutgers University. He has worked for the Kearny Board of Education as a substitute teacher and swim coach and has served as a lifeguard for the Kearny Recreation program. His brother Joseph is a member of the KFD. Ostanski, 28, is another North Arlington native who received a fire science degree from NJCU. A member of the borough’s volunteer fire department, Ostanski worked as a custodian for the borough school system.

McKeown, 34, is a product of Queen of Peace High School, North Arlington, and has taken courses at Seton Hall University. A former member of the East Newark Volunteer Fire Department, McKeown has worked as a KFD civilian dispatcher and as a paid firefighter in Bethlehem, Pa. Witt, 21, is a graduate of Kearny High where he played football and baseball, and previously worked with UPS. Ho, 23, a graduate of St. Peter’s Preparatory School, Jersey City, has a degree in criminal justice from Rutgers University. He worked as a state corrections officer at Northern State Prison in Newark.

Popola, 27, is a product of the North Caldwell public school system and earned a degree in business management from Fairleigh Dickinson University.

He worked as a lumber/building materials supervisor for Home Depot and an EMT with Atlantic Ambulance Corp. of Livingston.

Lopez Jr., 22, attended the University of Puerto Rico and got a degree in exercise and sports training. He worked as a teacher’s aide/paraprofessional at Washington Academy in Belleville and as an EMT. Hampshire also notes that it “has undertaken a number of projects on environmentally contamined land, working with a broad variety of municipalities” and has been named as a “designated redeveloper” for additional projects in Harrison, Garfield, Woodbridge and Perth Amboy.

Now it will be up to the members of the borough’s negotiating team – Borough Council members Richard Hughes, the council president; Daniel Pronti and Mario Karcic – to come to terms with HC Development on a redeveloper agreement which will then be submitted to the mayor and full council for their review and, ultimately, approval, modification or rejection.

That process, said Borough Administrator Stephen LoIacono, could take several weeks.

Meanwhile, on other borough development fronts, Ceberio noted that a groundbreaking for the new 140,000 square foot FedEx Freight distribution center on the old Bethlehem Steel site in the Porete Ave. area was held Sept. 23. The property owner, Meadowlands Ventures LLC, has leased the site to Porette Development LLC which is building the facility. Opening is expected by late next year, Ceberio said.

Also, the old Ridge Lumber facility on Ridge Road has been torn down and the foundation is going in in preparation for a new 30-unit residential structure.

And, Ceberio said, discussions are continuing with the Bergen County Improvement Authority toward an agreement that could result in the BCIA doing a feasibility study for construction of a parking garage for buses at the NJ Transit bus loop on Ridge Road for which the borough would look to nail down “air rights” over the garage to allow for deck parking by commuters and shoppers. Also being considered, he said, is having Meadows Link using the site as a pickup point as part of a shuttle service for commuters and for residents of the nearby garden apartments.

And perhaps most impressive – each classroom, that has no more than 20 students each in kindergarten to fifth-grade – is now equipped with a SmartBoard.

“Technology is an important part of the curriculum,” Manley said.

During the hour-long tour, we watched as students in lower grades were learning math (addition) with SmartBoard use. Older children in upper grades were learning vocabulary words with SmartBoard displays.

Vikings enjoying second life in Bergen tourney

The North Arlington High School boys’ soccer team has survived a season thus far that can best be described as a roller coaster ride.

The Vikings have endured more ups and downs than the Cyclone at Coney Island.

Before the season started, veteran head coach Jesse Dembowski knew that it was going to be a tough go, after graduating 13 seniors and bringing back only three starters.

“We’re young,” Dembowski said. “We’re working on team chemistry and always trying things out. We’re going to go through some bumps and bruises.”

Bingo. The Vikings won a match, lost a match, then won one and lost one.

“We’ve definitely changed up our defense,” Dembowski said. “It’s a whole new defense with putting pressure up top to try to take some of the pressure off our defense.

We’re trying. It’s going to help us by having a younger team. You can try it and adapt with a young team. Then you work on the chemistry.”

The Vikings owned a 6-6 record last week

Then Hudson Ribeiro scored a goal seven minutes into the second overtime, leading the Vikings to a 3-2 win over Park Ridge in the semifinals of the Northern Jersey Interscholastic Conference tournament.

Alex Lago scored two goals and Joshua Gonzales had an assist in that huge victory. Standout net minder Ali Timur had five saves.

Earlier in the week, the Vikings defeated WoodRidge, 4-1, with Eric McKenna and Ribeiro scoring a goal and adding an assist in the win. Gonzales and Dylan Jurado had goals and Lago added an assist.

So the Vikings now own an 8-6 record, but it comes after a 1-0 loss to Wallington.

“We’ve never been under .500,” Dembowski said. “So we expect to be competitive.”

Lyndhurst girls capture first league title since 1987

I

n recent years, the Lyndhurst High School boys’ cross country program has earned its share of accolades, capturing county and league championships.

That only served to motivate the Golden Bears’ girls’ team.

“We watched the boys win for three years in a row,” said Lindsay Cirne, the lone senior on the Lyndhurst girls’ cross country team. “We were never looked at as being equals to the boys. I think that was a little frustrating.

So we all got together and

pushed ourselves. We wanted to win this season. We knew we had potential to do it. If we worked, we could get this done.”

Lyndhurst head coach Michael Picardo thought that his girls were poised to break through.

“At the end of last year, I saw that we had a solid sophomore group that came together,” Picardo said. “I knew that this year we had a great shot to compete and possibly win the league.”

Sure enough, that potential became reality last week, when the Golden Bears captured the NJIC Colonial Division championship at the

Garret Mountain Reserve in West Paterson, winning the first league championship for the Lyndhurst girls since 1987.

Ironically, Cirne’s mother, the former Maria Sferruzza was a member of that team, so the torch was passed from mom to daughter.

“I was so excited when I found out,” Cirne said. “I knew I wanted to do this and continue the tradition.”

Picardo said that someone had to take leadership of the team – and that candidate was the lone senior.

Picardo is impressed with Perez.

“Her future is bright,” Picardo said. “If she keeps working, she could be as good as anyone we’ve ever had.

She’s been a runner her whole life, so she has a good foundation in the sport. She could be truly something special down the road.”

Picardo likes what Rudden brings to the team.

“Meg is the vocal one,” Picardo said. “She’s the one who talks to the team and gets them going.”

“I don’t think I’m stepping on toes,” Rudden said. “It’s just my nature. But we work hard together every single day and there should be a reward for it. Sure, it’s fun for us, but we put the work in. I just try to keep everyone pumped and going and ready.”

Rudden said she couldn’t believe it when she heard the Golden Bears had actually won a championship.

“I was speechless and that’s hard for me,” Rudden said.

“We all pulled together and made it happen.”

Picardo said that he really

hasn’t given it much thought that his girls had won a league title like the boys have in the past.

“I really haven’t reflected on it entirely,” Picardo said.

“But it is awesome. The girls have now reached a level of success. We’ll have to see if it continues.”

Cirne has also reached her own success. She owns a 4.185 grade point average and scored 2,020 on the Scholastic Aptitude Tests. She wants to major in biomedical engineering. It’s safe to say Cirne will have her pick of the litter by the time comes for her to decide.

“I just really like how we all came together for one goal,” Cirne said. “We really worked hard to get this done. It was so exciting. I was hugging everyone. To have our hard work pay off is really exciting.”

The Lyndhurst boys also won the NJIC Colonial meet at Garret Mountain, but because of a quirk in the regular season scoring, they had to settle for second place in the league.

Xavier Locke won the meet, with Andrew Ellis sixth and Billy Weckstein (Kelly’s twin brother) not far behind.

But this day belonged to the Lyndhurst girls. They earned it. Hard work does indeed pay off.

Senior Ribeiro has become the main go-to guy for the Vikings. He’s scored 17 goals and has six assists, much improved on his ninegoal performance last year.

Ribeiro started his season with a five-goal game against Weehawken and three times scored three goals in a game, again against Weehawken, then also St. Mary’s of Rutherford and Wood-Ridge.

Ribeiro currently ranks third in Bergen County in goal scoring.

Sophomore McKenna has eight goals and four assists and fellow sophomore Jurado has seven goals, so the Vikings are showing solid scoring balance.

“We moved Jurado up to the midfield and he showed a lot of progress and a lot of passion,” Dembowski said.

Lago, a junior, has four goals and seven assists, second on the team to senior Joshua Gonzales, who has four goals and 12 assists.

“Gonzales was a JV (junior varsity) player last year,” Dembowski said. “He’s really stepped up.”

The Vikings are using a “four-across” on the backline instead of the traditional sweeper and stopper formation.

“He’s an aggressive player,” Dembowski said. “It helps us out. We’re counting on them a bit to lead the team, to distribute the ball and get us going. We need them to play well.”

Mainiero has versatile day in Maroon Raider setback

M

ainiero’s Sports Shop has been a staple of the Nutley community for ages. Located on Franklin Avenue, right behind the Nutley Diner, Nick Mainiero Sr. and his son, Nicholas, have partnered to establish the premier sporting goods store

in Nutley for four decades.

Someday, the third generation of the Mainiero family, also named Nick, will probably take over. The youngest Mainiero knows all about the family business, having worked at the store when he’s not attending Nutley classes or free from any outside activities.

“I think there will be a time when they just pass it over,”

“He’s the most versatile athlete we have,” Nutley head coach Tom Basile said. “He’s only about 5-foot-6, but he does it all.”

To try to change the fortunes of the struggling Maroon Raiders, Basile turned Maineiro into a Wildcat formation quarterback, a la Tim Tebow, where Maineiro lines up as a shotgun quarterback and has the option to either run or throw.

“I knew he could throw the ball a little, so we put the Wildcat package in for Nick,” Basile said. “I already knew he could run. Our running game was non-existent. Nick has the heart of a lion who just keeps going.”

“Nick is a throwback kid, in that he would do anything for the team,” Basile said. “I wish the whole team had his attitude. He’s not a big kid at all.”

Maineiro didn’t mind having the bulk of the responsibilities on his shoulders.

“I think it’s great,” Maineiro said. “We’ve been practicing the new formation with me as the quarterback. I never played quarterback before. I was a running back my whole life growing up. So this was new to me. Anything I can do to help the team win, then I’m going to do it. Let’s see what I could do.”

“Nick is a natural,” Basile said. “I knew he could handle it. Nick didn’t bat an eye when I approached him with the change. He just said he’d do it.”

Sure enough, Maineiro did it all last Saturday against Orange. He carried the ball 17 times for 52 yards and scored two touchdowns on the ground. He completed both of his passes for 60 yards and another score. He also returned a punt 76 yards for another touchdown.

On defense, he made six tackles from his cornerback slot and collected an interception. Needless to say, Maineiro had a very productive day.

And for his efforts, Maineiro has been selected as The Observer Athlete of the Week for the past week.

Diane T. Hoadley Diane T. Hoadley (nee Reboli) passed away on Oct. 12.

She was 79.

She was born in Newark and lived in Sayreville before moving to Edgewater, Fla., 35 years ago. She returned to New Jersey two years ago and settled in Whiting.

Visiting was Monday, Oct. 17, at the Armitage & Wiggins Funeral Home, 596 Belgrove Drive, Kearny. A service took place at the funeral home and burial followed in Holy Cross Cemetery, North Arlington.

Diane enjoyed volunteering at Crestwood Village in Whiting. She was the wife of the late Harold W. Hoadley and former wife of the late Robert Hallacker. She was the mother of Robert J. Hallacker (Susan Maxein), Allen J. Hallacker, Denise Ligato (Mike), Charlotte Hoadley and the late Deborah Hallacker. Also surviving are her grandchildren Robert, Danielle, Maria and Jaret.

Before the dedication ceremony earlier this month, the school sponsored a sportsthemed dress-down (or tag) day. Kids paid $2 to wear sports team-themed clothing. Santiago was a huge fan of the New York Yankees, the Philadelphia Eagles and the Chicago Bulls – but the kids could wear any team’s logo.

The school wound up raising more than $500 for the Melvin Vincent Santiago Memorial Law Enforcement Scholarship Fund, which was set up in 2014.

During the ceremony, Santiago’s uncle, Michael Kelly, a Jersey City Police Department captain who commands the city’s West District and his mother, Cathy McBride, spoke to those gathered at the dedication ceremony. Also present were Kearny Mayor Alberto Santos, Police Chief John Dowie and various other dignitaries from around Hudson County.

McBride said she often worries that her son’s memory will fade away with time.

“My fear has always been that Melvin would be forgotten, not by his family, but by everyone else,” Santiago’s mom said. “Clearly, that is not going to happen.”

Kelly, meanwhile, encouraged the kids of the school to do like Melvin

did – to follow their dreams.

“When I say the name of Melvin Santiago, for me, it’s my Pledge of Allegiance,” Kelly said.

“And I want all of you kids to know that he was like you. Not too long ago, he was sitting in the same seats you were, he was listening to the same teachers you were, but do you dream? Do you have dreams? I want you to grasp those dreams, and I want you to listen to your teachers, listen to your parents and to the folks who are important around you … and we wish you all to follow your dreams.”

A special alumnus A few weeks ago, the school’s gymnasium was dedicated to the memory of the late Jersey City Police Det. Melvin Santiago.

Santiago was a graduate of another school operated by the same organization that runs Hudson Arts & Science – iLearn Charter Schools.

Santiago was murdered in cold blood outside a Walgreens on Kennedy Boulevard in the earlymorning hours of July 13, 2014.

When Santiago first came on the job as a JCPD officer, he asked to be assigned to one of the city’s toughest neighborhoods in the West District. Ultimately, that cost him his life.

When he was a student, in 2008, Santiago was named a “Rising Scholar,” as one of the school’s best and bright-
