By Ron Leir Observer Correspondent KEARNY – ow that school is in session, safety controversies involving several Kearny public schools got a public airing at last week’s council meeting.

Councilman Rich Konopka got the ball rolling when he reported a disturbing discovery following a recent tour of the newly opened Hudson Arts & Science Charter School on Midland Ave. “Parents were complaining to a crossing guard,” he said, about having to move their cars from safety zones.

And, he added, “I couldn’t believe people wouldn’t come to a full stop in the crosswalk (at Midland and Beech St.).”

Because opening and dismissal times are not uniform among the various schools in the largely Fourth Ward section of town, the Kearny Police Department has had to adjust schedules of nine crossing guards to provide coverage as best as possible.

But some parents fear that coverage gaps are exposing children to potential risks negotiating vehicular traffic while crossing busy streets.

Judy Hyde, head of the Town-Wide Parent Teacher Association, told the mayor and council that, “at 8:37 a.m.

Monday [Sept. 12], at Midland and Forest St. a student almost got hit.”

Complicating matters at the charter school, where there is no designated drop-off zone (as is the case at public schools around town), parents of children from kindergarten to grade 3 “must bring their kids into school [in the morning] and

sign them out [at dismissal time],” said Deputy Police Chief George King, so they have to scramble to find legal parking spaces.

“The first day of school,” King said, “we issued quite a few summonses for people parking by hydrants and in crosswalks. … It has gotten better but it’s still a work in progress.”

Lincoln Middle School, just a block or so from the charter school, has bell times that vary from HASCS, and parent Tracy Solinski said that by the time some students, like her son, get out from after-school clubs, the guards have finished for the day.

“Kids are not paying attention [as they walk home], they’re on their cell phones, playing Pokemon Go!,” Solinski said.

King said that police representatives, including traffic bureau head Lt. John Taylor, met with the HASCS security director before school opened to review the school’s opening/closing times to try and plot out a crossing guard schedule that would best fit.

But, he added, because the guards are limited to a five-hour period each day – and because Lincoln School requires coverage for a two-hour lunch period – “trying to find a middle ground” in adjusting their schedules to ensure no gaps was virtually undoable.

“Mathematically, with these different schedules, five hours can’t cover it.”

Santos went on to say that the “charter school has rights to the same protection [of its students] but that shouldn’t penalize our children.”

HASCS takes students from K to grade 5 from Kearny, Jersey City and other communities in northern New Jersey and the Kearny Board of Education is obliged to pay for the charter’s Kearny resident students.

Santos said that King and the town administration “will work on this. There will be an issue on cost.”

In the interim, King said the KPD will continue to monitor the situation to try and safeguard children crossing as best it can within the time restrictions.

KFD quickly puts out Beech St. fire KEARNY – A one-alarm fire, quickly brought under control, nevertheless forced the temporary evacuation of all the tenants of a large apartment building on Beech St. last week, the KFD reported.

Fire Chief Steve Dyl said the alarm at 425 Beech, just south of the Belleville Pike, was called in at 11:52 a.m., Thursday, Sept. 15, and firefighters had it under control by 12:06.

That tenant and one from another unit were treated at the scene for smoke inhalation.

All the residents who were evacuated were later able to return to their homes, except for the individual from the damaged apartment.

Dyl said the fire was under investigation but appeared to be accidental.

Kearny Fire Department promotes

Piece by piece, the roster of the Kearny Fire Department is getting pumped up.

Last Tuesday, Sept. 13, it was the captain’s rank where vacancies created by retirements were filled as three

firefighters were promoted.

Sworn in to their new ranks were William Crockett, Matthew Mitchell and Kevin Becker. Their appointments take effect Sept. 24, at which time their pay goes to $105,137 a year.

Mayor Alberto Santos said the action being taken was a step along the road to get

the Fire Department back to maximum strength as called for by its Table of Organization.

three to the rank of fire captain ers. “We’re not quite there.”

Fire Chief Steven Dyl agreed that the department was “trying to rebuild. We have a foundation and we’re filling in the ranks.”

And, he said, it was now more critical than ever before to get an adequate volume of fire superiors to train and monitor the record number of newbies now on board.

“About 60% of our department consists of members with under two years on the job,” Dyl said.

A huge number of retirements of senior members in the last few years have drained the KFD of valuable know-how and experience and they’re being

replaced by rookies.

“And next year,” Dyl noted, “we’re going to have 14 more new faces.” That’s when the town anticipates putting on more rank-and-file firefighters to beef up its overall numbers.

Dyl said he expects that by that time, “we’ll reach our overall T.O. of 102.”

The town’s personnel officer, Kim Bennett, is currently working with the KFD to cull through the list of candidates to fill the 14 slots, Dyl said.

“We got 500 applications for those positions,” he added.

Meanwhile, with the three new captains, the chief said, the department will have 25 on line – one short of the maximum al-

lowed for that rank by the T.O. After they were sworn in, Dyl provided capsule biographies of the men.

William Crockett, born and raised in Kearny, is a product of St. Stephen’s School. He attended Montclair State University.

His dad, William, is a retired Kearny police captain. The younger Crockett started his firefighter career in 2005 and,

five years later, was acclaimed as Firefighter of the Year for having revived an unconscious person in an out-of-town incident. He is a member of the KFD’s Technical Rescue Team.

Matthew Mitchell is from North Bergen and his dad Al is a retired North Hudson Regional Fire & Rescue firefighter.

Matthew is a graduate of Dumont High School and put in

12 years with the Coast Guard and Coast Guard Reserves. He began working for the KFD in 2005 and serves on the department’s Accident Review Board.

Kevin Becker is a Bayonne native who worked previously with PSE&G. His brother Pat is a Kearny police officer Kevin was hired by the KFD in 2007 and serves on the Technical Rescue Team.

WASP gets dying wish: Burial in Arlington

By Ron Leir Bad news continues to dominate the headlines these days.

There was the so-far unexplained explosion that shook up the heart of New York City’s Chelsea section this past weekend.

And the pipe bomb that ripped up a section of the boardwalk in Seaside Park at the Jersey Shore about 11 hours earlier.

Then, Sunday night, there was the discovery of pipe bombs outside the train station in Elizabeth.

As of press time, these incidents remained under investigation but they certainly were grim reminders that fears of another terrorist attack still abound – 15 years after the 9/11 horrors.

The despicable madmen who killed nearly 3,000 Americans that day have left an imprint so deep that we cannot help but recoil in paroxysms of disbelief when we are confronted by events that seem to mimic the unconscionable.

Likewise, the horrors of war in the Middle East continue, as witness our recent “accidental” bombing of Syrian troops and the continual agony of Syrian civilians caught in a never-ending crossfire.

Then there is the scourge of the U.S. Congress that cannot – or will not – come to an agreement to provide funding to combat the ravages of the Zika virus in Puerto Rico, our forgotten commonwealth on the verge of bankruptcy or to rescue the citizens of Flint, Mich., from the peril of its contaminated water supply.

I don’t even want to think about our upcoming Presidential election choices. Yes, let

Instead, let’s try to focus on some good news, although it’s certainly late in coming: a faithful servant of the Republic has secured her dying wish.

Elaine D. Harmon, who flew for the U.S. Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP) during World War II, was permitted to have her remains interred in Arlington National Cemetery. She thus becomes the first of the WASP contingent to attain that honor.

It wasn’t easy.

First, as reported by Wikipedia, here’s a bit of history on the WASP: Nearly 1,900 women were culled from more than 25,000 women applicants to be trained to fly non-combat missions by the U.S. Army Air Force. After four months of training, about 1,000 got their pilot’s license.

They were stationed at 120 air bases across the U.S. and collectively logged 60 million

miles of flights, from aircraft factories to embarkation ports and military training bases, also towing targets for live anti-aircraft practice, simulated strafing missions and transporting cargo.

A few WASP members tested rocket-propelled planes, piloted jet planes and worked with radar-controlled targets. From September 1942 to December 1944, the WASP delivered 12,650 aircraft.

Eleven died in training and 27 perished in active duty while serving during the war years.

But despite their contributions to the war effort, the Army would not pay for the expense of sending a deceased WASP member home nor would the Army provide a funeral with military honors – or even allow an American flag to be draped on her coffin – because a WASP flew only domestic missions so she was

considered a civilian and not part of the military.

Harmon, who had initially learned to fly Piper Cubs with the Civilian Pilot Training Program at College Park, Md., completed six months of flight training and ground school with the Army Air Force at Avenger Field in Texas in 1944, flying, among other planes, the B-17 Flying Fortress out of Nellis Air Force Base.

Her job was to fly with men who needed retraining in instrument flying.

In 1977, President Carter signed a bill conferring veterans’ benefits on WASP members, followed in 2002 by the Army granting a WASP eligibility for inurnment in Arlington Cemetery.

However, in March 2015 Secretary of the Army John McHugh ruled that WASPs did not have status in the Army and were, therefore, excluded from that cemetery privi-

lege because Arlington was an Army gravesite and that WASPs could only be buried in Veterans’ Administration cemeteries.

Harmon died April 21, 2015, and her dying wish for burial in Arlington went unanswered.

That was remedied, however, in May 2016 when President Obama signed a bill co-sponsored by Rep. Martha McSally (R-Ariz.) and Sen. Barbara Mikuklski (D-Md.) to reinstate inurnment rights for WASPs at Arlington and in September 2016 Harmon got her wish.

KPD: Every party has a pooper

t 10:40 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 10, Kearny Police Officers Tim Castle and Jason Ward responded to a report of a fight in progress on the 100 block of Linden Ave. and arrived to find “two large groups of people yelling and holding each other back.” When the dust settled, the cops learned that, during a party at a local residence, one of the guests had become “combative and threatening.”

At one point, in violation of all rules of social etiquette, said guest reportedly armed himself with a large steak knife and proceeded to chase another man out of the house, attempting to stab him. When the potential victim, a 46-yearold Kearny resident, managed to get away, the guest returned to the home and began breaking things and turning over furniture, police said.

The officers, having retrieved the knife and taken witnesses’ corroborating statements, arrested Tony Roman, 42, of East Brunswick, on charges of aggravated assault, unlawful possession of a weapon and possession of a weapon for unlawful purposes. Police said he also was wanted on a Broward County (Fla.) Sheriff’s Office warrant.

Municipal Court Judge Thomas D. McKeon set Roman’s Kearny bail at $2,500, and Florida authorities were advised of the arrest.

••• Other recent reports from the Kearny police blotter included the following: Sept. 7 Officer Ward, responding to a 4:45 p.m. accident at Central

Ave. and Second St. in South Kearny, reportedly found that one motorist, Marcus Zamudio, 50, of Jersey City, had not had a valid driver’s license since 1994 — and that expired license was also suspended.

Unexpired, police said, was his $750 (full) motor vehicle warrant out of Wood-Ridge. Zamudio was charged with being an unlicensed driver, driving while suspended and failure to exhibit proof of insurance and was released after posting the $750 bail.

••• Officer Michael Gontarczuk, on patrol at 7:30 p.m. at Kearny and Bergen Aves., pulled alongside a 1994 Mercedes and reportedly detected the scent of burning marijuana wafting from an open window. Police said that when the occupants realized there was a squad car next to them, the window rolled up, but Gontarczuk stopped the Mercedes at Bergen and Chestnut St. and observed, in plain view in the ashtray, eight — count ‘em, eight! — partially burned marijuana cigars. Reportedly recovered from the center console were five plastic bags — four containing residue of the drug, one with more than mere residue.

Police said passenger Johana Pardo, 24, of Kearny, admitted ownership and was charged with possession of pot and paraphernalia. The driver got a summons for having a car with tinted windows.

Sept. 9 At 6:30 p.m., Officer Daniel Esteves recognized two men on the 200 block of Kearny Ave. and arrested both after confirming they had warrants.

After confirming that all occupants had left the building before their arrival, “the first arriving engine company attempted to make an aggressive attack through the front door,” Haggerty said.

But, “at one point,” he said, “they were pushed down a flight of exterior stairs from a large ball of fire that that had flashed over them while making entry.”

The Lyndhurst volunteers then signaled a second alarm and requested mutual aid: Rutherford responded with one engine; East Rutherford sent a ladder truck; and North Arlington dispatched a FAST team.

Altogether, Haggerty said, there were 35 firefighters at the scene.

Meanwhile, fire departments from Nutley, East Newark, Secaucus, Wallington and Carlstadt provided standby coverage at Lyndhurst fire headquarters.

Haggerty said the fire was declared under control by 11:21 p.m. after an intense struggle to contain the stubborn blaze.

“The fire was deep-seated and consumed the entire first and second floors as well as attic space prior to FD arrival,” he said. “Crews had to be evacuated twice from the interior due to structural components becoming compromised, specifically, the roof, of which a portion had collapsed.

“The fire required a laborintensive overhaul process to ensure all smoldering pockets of fire were extinguished.”

No injuries were reported to civilians or firefighters, he said.

Haggerty said the fire’s cause is being investigated by Lyndhurst Police Det. Vincent Auteri who asked the Bergen County Sheriff’s Bureau of Criminal Identification to take photos at the scene due to the extent of the damage, although the cause “does not appear to be suspicious at this time.”

The Lyndhurst Building Department has declared the building to be uninhabitable, he added.

By Ron Leir Observer Correspondent EAST NEWARK – uring the 2015-2016 school year, East Newark public school employees suspected that certain children attending the already crowded East Newark Elementary School were not bona fide residents of the borough.

In some cases, it turned out some kids were coming from across the Passaic River, from Newark.

In other cases, though, children were found to be living in the borough – but in an illegal housing unit, according to municipal and school officials.

And, in recent years, “we’ve been finding more and more of it,” said Patrick Martin, superintendent/principal of the borough’s only school.

Typically, Martin said, the situation involves a residence with two apartments, each with two bedrooms, living room and bathroom, renting for between $1,000 and $1,200 a month.

All of that is perfectly fine, he said, but then people will sub-lease part of their apartment to some other individual and sub-divide the apartment, allowing that individual to put a padlock on a door to create a separate entrance.

“We’ve found that the going rate for such a room is like $100 a week,” Martin said.

“And it’s completely illegal.

This goes on constantly and often we’ve encountered a mother in one of these rooms with two or three children.

They’ve got a little refrigerator, hotplate and/or microwave.”

When it comes to heating the illegal unit, Martin said the gas or electric bill is sent to the apartment whose name is on the lease – not the individual to whom it is sublet For new registrants to the borough school, “we should see a utility bill with [the child’s family’s] name on it” as proof of residency, Martin

said. “In the old days, we just asked for your mail as proof that you lived there but that doesn’t work anymore.”

Two years ago, Martin said, enrollment at the borough school was 260; the last school year, it rose to 270, and currently, it’s 280. But aside from the St. George Apartments – which generated little or no new students – “there’s been no new construction” that could account for an influx of children, Martin said.

Since school officials lack the jurisdictional authority to demand entry to a private dwelling to verify their suspicions – no matter how well researched their suspicions are – they call on the local PD for help, Martin said.

When that happens, said Police Chief Anthony Monteiro, “we go to the location to speak to the people in the apartment to see if the family lives there.”

Or, Monteiro said, police responding to an address for some other reason will check for evidence of an illegal padlocked room. On occasion, he said, police will find inside such a unit, a bedroom with two families living there “and sometimes three or four families.” He said these illegal dwellings have been discovered “in the basement, in attics, in normal apartments.”

Such findings, Monteiro said, are referred to the borough’s construction code officer, Mark Sadonis, who is expected to “square it away in court.” In many instances, he added, the owners of the buildings involved claim they “didn’t even know” about the illegal units in their buildings.

Sadonis said that when such complaints about these illegal “cubicles” are brought to his office’s attention, “we try to bring the owners to court.” He estimated that five such cases went to court during the past school year but couldn’t recall the outcomes. The annual event, called the Tour de Force, attracts law enforcement officers from across the U.S. who ride in remembrance of 9/11 and to honor all police killed in the line of duty.

The 2016 Tour began in the nation’s capital on Sept. 11 and followed a 280-mile route to New York City.

Martinez was subsequently taken to an area hospital where he was listed in stable condition, according to Suarez.

ecutor’s office, “which is standard practice for policeinvolved shootings,” according to Suarez.

No further information, including what type of merchandise had allegedly been taken from the Walmart, was released by the prosecutor.

But Kearny Mayor Alberto Santos told The Observer that, according to what he has learned about the incident, a uniformed onduty Kearny police officer happened to be near the Walmart when a police radio alert about the incident was broadcast.

Santos said the officer then responded to the Walmart where he reportedly spotted a vehicle driven by Martinez – reportedly fleeing the crime scene – in the Walmart parking lot.

At that point, Santos said, the officer reportedly fired his weapon at the fleeing suspect.

According to one police source familiar with the case, the officer fired three times.

One bullet hit the suspect’s right arm and two shots pierced his left arm, the source said.

Nonetheless, the suspect

still managed to drive away from the scene, the source said.

At some time a bit later in the day, however, police – reportedly aided by getting a description of the getaway car and the suspect – tracked Martinez to a location in Newark where, according to the mayor, he was attempting to get his vehicle repaired.

The suspect didn’t go to a hospital for treatment of his wounds because he feared that the hospital would – as required by law – report his gunshot injuries to the police, Santos said.

It was apparently at this time, after officers corralled him, that Martinez was taken to an area hospital.

It could not be readily learned how the second suspect is tied to the crime.

Both suspects are presumed to be in Hudson County Jail, pending court action.

The officer involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave pending a completion of the prosecutor’s review of the matter.

The officer is reportedly a KPD veteran with prior military service.

Meanwhile, the borough’s municipal government is doing what it can to help control the spread of the illegal units.

On Sept. 14, the mayor and Borough Council updated its code regulating rental property registration to require that all rental units in buildings of fewer than 20 apartments be “registered [with the borough clerk] … yearly and with each change of occupancy,” beginning Aug. 15, 2017.

In addition to key facts about the property owner and/or agent, the law also requires the owner to file “the exact number of sleeping rooms contained in the rental unit,” along with “a floor plan” of the unit, plus “the names, age and gender of each tenant who is to occupy the dwelling unit” and “such other information as may be prescribed by the borough.”

Moreover, the law mandates that “each rental unit shall be inspected at least once a year” by an agent of the borough “for the purpose of determining zoning ordinance

compliance, and to the extent applicable, to determine if the property complies with the Property Maintenance Code, BOCA Maintenance Code and Housing Code and/or Uniform Fire Safety Act.” The law further requires that, “the maximum number of occupants, as determined by the construction code official, shall be posted in each rental unit.”

If a unit fails inspection, the law calls for the tenant(s) to vacate the unit pending compliance with the relevant codes within 30 days. Failing that, and/or the borough granting an extension, the owner can be subject to penalties.

Drugs figure in 2 weekend arrests: HPD HARRISON – wo men were arrested by the Harrison Police Department in separate drug busts conducted this past weekend in Harrison.

On Saturday, Sept. 10, shortly before 1 a.m., Harrison Police Officer Joseph Sloan and Det. Sgt. Richard Lourenco were working a special task force when they observed a 2013 Mercedes Benz parked with its engine running at Warren and S. Second Sts., police said.

Police said the driver – later identified as Samuel W. Davalos – appeared to be slumped over in his seat.

However, when the officers approached the driver’s side window, Davalos was alert and had what appeared to be a marijuana grinder in his hands, police said.

Davalos was ordered out of the car and onto the sidewalk where he was pat-searched for weapons, police said. Then, police said, Sloan searched the vehicle where he discovered a

clear bag reportedly containing a green leafy vegetation suspected to be marijuana concealed in a coffee mug along with three packages of rolling papers.

Police had the Mercedes towed and charged Davalos, 24, of North Bergen, with possession of 50 grams of CDS and possession of drug paraphernalia and released, pending court action.

In a second incident, on Sunday, Sept. 11, Officers Corey Karas and Matthew Murphy and Det. Frank Narvaez were assigned to a robbery task force, checking vehicles on Taft Place near Frank E. Rodgers Blvd. South, shortly after 2 a.m., when they observed a Honda Civic with its dashboard lights on, police said.

Inside the vehicle, asleep in the driver’s seat, was a man known to police as David Passos, with the keys in the ignition and the vehicle running but the gear shift in park, police said.

Police said Narvaez and Murphy began knocking on the driver’s side window for a few minutes, trying to rouse Passos, who finally responded.

As he began looking around, Passos appeared confused and put the vehicle in reverse but did not accelerate, police said.

After the officers yelled to put it back in park, police said Passos left the car in reverse, turned off the motor and removed the keys, causing the car to roll backwards toward Narvaez while Passos exited.

Narvaez and Karas held the car back while Murphy entered the vehicle to put the gear shift into park, police said.

Police said that when Passos opened the car door to exit, the officers detected a strong odor of burnt and raw marijuana from his body and from inside the car. Passos, meanwhile, was mumbling his words, his eyes were bloodshot, he was holding onto the vehicle to balance himself and he stumbled trying to walk,

police said.

Police said Karas, aiming his flashlight inside the car, spotted in the center console a knotted plastic baggie reportedly containing a white powdery substance believed to be cocaine. Also, in the rear passenger seat, Karas found multiple prescription bottles, police said.

The officers recovered two prescription bottles, one labeled as containing 17 amphetamine slats, 20 mgs each, and the other labeled as having 30 tablets of Bupropion XL 150 extended release tablets, both listed as issued to a Harrison woman. In the rear seat, police said the officers found an empty blue bottle labeled as Promethazine with codeine that belonged to a woman from Franklin in Sussex County.

Murphy, meanwhile, found a small plastic baggie in the driver’s side door reportedly containing a green and brown vegetation believed to be marijuana, police said.

After getting consent from

the vehicle’s owner to continue a search – given that there was reportedly a strong odor of raw marijuana emanating from the trunk – the officers opened the trunk where they observed an unzipped blue duffel bag and a large quantity of marijuana vacuum-sealed.

Upon opening the bag, the officers found more vacuumsealed bags, both sealed and partly-sealed, police said.

Also discovered in the trunk was a box of Food Saver vacuum seal bags, police said.

All the items found inside the vehicle were seized as evidence, police said. Additionally, police seized $384 in cash reportedly found on Passos.

Passos, 24, of Harrison, was arrested on criminal charges of possession and distribution of CDS and was issued motor vehicle summonses for DWI and possession of CDS in a motor vehicle.

Police said they anticipate filing additional charges against Passos as the investigation continues.

North Arlington girls’ soccer: Life without Seca The North Arlington High School girls’ soccer team won 17 games last year, one of the highest win totals in school history. The Vikings advanced all the way to the NJSIAA North Jersey Section 2, Group I semifinals, where they lost to perennial state power Glen Ridge.

Needless to say, it was a year to remember for the program.

But those days are history. Those days are gone because Joanna Seca is gone. The best girls’ soccer player in school history has taken her immense talent to NCAA Division I school Drexel (where she’s already making her presence felt).

“It’s a different game plan,” said North Arlington head coach Dan Farinola. “Joanna brought so much to the table. If we needed a score, we always knew that Joanna would just take care of it. We have to move on.”

So the Vikings have begun the new era of North Arlington soccer _ without Seca.

“We’re not looking

for one person to replace Joanna,” Farinola said. “There are very few like her. Now we feel like we’re getting more people involved.

It’s not just all Joanna.

She’s a tough talent to replace, but I believe we could get by, because we bring back a lot of experienced players.”

Senior Kaitlin Cappuccino is the goalkeeper.

“We moved her to goalie her sophomore year and it was a good move,” Farinola said.

“She’s such a good athlete. She has good hands and I think that comes from playing basketball. She’s had to learn how to play the position and she’s doing a good job.”

The sweeper is junior Carli Mullins.

“She has endless energy,” Farinola said.

“She’s a smart player and a good leader for us back there.”

Seniors Missy Torres and Callie Evanchick are also returning stalwarts on the back line.

By Jim Hague Observer Sports Writer Mike DiPiano knew that his Nutley High School girls’ soccer team might have had to handle a few obstacles a year ago.

“We play in the Super Essex Conference-American Division, one of the best conferences in all sports,” said DiPiano, who began his fifth season as head girls’ soccer coach this season. “So our schedule was loaded by design. To be prepared, we even booked tough out of conference games.”

The result was a 13-9 campaign and a trip to the NJSIAA North Jersey Section 2, Group III semifinals.

This season, the Maroon Raiders have been moved to the North Jersey Section 1 bracket, so things are a little different.

“The goal is still the same,” DiPiano said. “We want to get to the states and win one.

This is Year 5 of the program and this is the first time we talked about what we wanted to do. We knew that we had the team and if we stayed the course, the next step would be to win one (a state sectional championship).”

DiPiano has built the Maroon Raiders’ program to where it is today.

“We have 50 girls in the program now,” DiPiano said. “We have a lot of girls who play for the travel team Nutley United. A lot of our girls play all year round. It’s a healthy situation.”

The Maroon Raiders utilize two girls in the net, namely sophomore Alessandra Santoriello and junior Jillian DeSantis.

“It’s a battle between the two,” DiPiano said. “Both are capable. Both are very strong and bring different aspects of the game to our team. We just have to find a happy medium between the two.”

Junior Lauren Holden is

the sweeper. Holden was a mainstay on the defense last year for the Maroon Raiders.

“She started every game back there for us,” DiPiano said. “She comes from a good Nutley family.”

Lauren’s older sister Emily, the softball great, is at Ithaca College.

“Lauren’s been starting since she was a freshman,” DiPiano said. “I think she’s going to have a big season for us.”

Senior Darby Fischer returns to the Maroon Raiders’ backline, which will only feature three players this year.

“To be talented enough to play varsity right away for me should tell you something,” DiPiano said. “We wanted to be able to use our talented players. To be able to use just three defenders brings us a ton of help in the midfield.” see SOCCER page

Lyndhurst’s DiTonto carries on with family tradition

“But it’s all mainly soccer,” DiTonto said. “It’s been that way for both me and my sister. Since she was older than me (three years older), I wanted to be like her.”

What teenaged kid actually admits that he wanted to be like his older sister? That statement alone took a lot of guts.

“She was a great player at Lyndhurst,” DiTonto said.

“She set the school record for assists. Why wouldn’t I want to be like her?”

When the current soccer season began, DiTonto knew that he had a bigger responsibility this season as a captain and proven scorer. After all, DiTonto scored 13 goals last season as a striker for the Golden Bears, who won 15 games a year ago.

“I knew I had to step up this year,” DiTonto said. “My

After all, the Lyndhurst High School junior has a father, David, who has been a dutiful soccer coach with Lyndhurst travel teams since his son was a youngster.

And Vincent was also blessed with having an older sister, Giana, who was a fine soccer player in her own right - and still plays for Felician University after a great career at Lyndhurst.

“My Dad taught me and my sister at a very young age,” Vincent DiTonto said. “He eventually became my coach, so I learned a lot. I was also very motivated by my sister.

After watching her play, I decided that I wanted to be like her. We’re both very competitive. She really pushed me a lot. We would go back and forth.”

I wanted to score more than I did last year and my teammates are the ones who can help me through it.”

Lyndhurst boys’ head soccer coach Denis Jelcic knew that DiTonto would be able to handle the load as the team’s leader.

“Vinny is a quiet leader,” Jelcic said. “He’s a great athlete who gives 150% every single day. He hustles every day

in practice. He’s the ultimate athlete. He doesn’t have to say much as a leader. He lets his actions speak for him. He just loves playing soccer.”

But Jelcic could have never predicted the start that his standout forward would enjoy.

“We expect him to score,” Jelcic said. “Maybe that puts some pressure on him, but he puts a lot of pressure on himself. Like every other teenaged kid, he wants to score every time the ball gets to his foot.”

Four games into the new season, DiTonto has been a scoring machine. He has eight goals in the four games, including a four-goal explosion against Leonia.

“I was very excited,” DiTonto said. “It’s a great way to start the season. I just have to keep it up.”

DiTonto also had two goals against Bergen Charter and one goal in both of the Golden Bears’ wins over McNair Academic and Dwight-Englewood. The Golden Bears have

won all four games, thanks to DiTonto’s goal-scoring prowess.

“I just have to be at the right place at the right time,” DiTonto said. “I am just doing my job. It’s very good for me and the team, but we have to keep it going.”

DiTonto’s eight goal stint in four games has earned him the distinction of being The Observer Athlete of the Week for the past week. DiTonto is the first honoree of the 20162017 scholastic sports season.

The weekly feature culminates in June with the selection of the Observer Male and Female Athletes of the Year.

Jelcic just loves what DiTonto brings to his team.

“I wish I had five more like him,” Jelcic said. “He just loves playing the game. He’s very unassuming and doesn’t expect anything. He’s around the ball all the time. He is scoring by being quick. He gets the ball to his chest and then his foot so quickly. He’s see ATHLETE page

SOCCER from Senior Angeli Bossbaly, sophomore Danielle Lohf and freshman Kristina LoPomo will see time among the three-man defensive set.

The center midfielder is senior Jenny Callaghan, who is off to a fine start, collecting two goals and an assist in the Maroon Raiders’ 5-2 win over Montclair Kimberley Academy last week.

“Jenny’s the field general,” DiPiano said of the NJITbound Callaghan. “She’s our motor. She’s the one who makes sure things are going well. All we do goes through her.”

Callaghan had six goals and nine assists all of last season, so she’s well on her way to bettering that mark.

Sophomore Emily DeAngelo is another returning starter at center midfield.

Junior Isabella Gonsiewski had 11 goals and 10 assists last year, so she should also expect to increase those numbers. She had a goal and an

assist in the win over MKA. Junior Maise Jelley was a spot starter last year, but she had a pretty good preseason — good enough to catch the eye of her head coach.

“She’s worked very hard to get her playing time,” DiPiano said.

Senior Nicole Evans and sophomore Jordan Burbank are two other Maroon Raiders who will see considerable time in the midfield.

The forward is a household name in Nutley, because it only seems like she’s been around forever.

Zoe Steck is officially and finally a senior. Steck, who has already given UConn a heads-up that she’ll be attending there next fall, scored 22 goals and had nine assists last year. She has already scored seven goals this season, including the three-goal hat trick against Caldwell in a 4-1 win.

The Maroon Raiders also have a fine freshman class of skilled players, namely Samantha Gabrielle, Natalie Muzziato and Alli Balitsos.

“She does things with her feet that I’ve never seen before,” DiPiano said. “She’s going to score goals. She has

best year last year,” Farinola said. “They’re all back. Missy is the most physical of the defenders, but they all do an excellent job.”

The Vikings play five players on the midfield. Sophomore Emily Cordova has moved up to the midfield from the stopper she played last year. Cordova is asked to concentrate more on her defense, but she’s been moved up to take advantage of her quickness.

Sophomore Sam DiPopolo is another midfielder.

“Sam is just a great athlete,” Farinola said. “She played forward last year. We moved her back because she can make plays. She can take the ball and go.”

Senior Kelly Lennon is another midfielder. Lennon scored eight goals last year.

“But she’s really progressed as an offensive threat,” Farinola said.

Sophomore Gabriella Alvarez has earned her place among the Viking midfielders.

“She knows the game well and she’s very versatile,” Farinola said. “I just felt that she best fit our needs on the outside.”

Sophomore Samantha Smith has made a huge splash so far in the Viking midfield.

Smith already has four goals in the Vikings’ two wins over Weehawken and Wood-Ridge.

Smith had 18 goals last year as a nice compliment to Seca.

Now, Smith has to become

more of a scorer.

“She has the same mindset as Joanna had,” Farinola said of Smith. “She’s very quick and she’s good with the ball.

She’s a talented player who can shoot with both feet.

That’s the big improvement she’s made. She’s able to go with her left.”

Junior Kaitlyn Stajek also returns. Stajek scored 19 goals from her forward position.

“She has to take the step up this year, like get 20,” Farinola said.

Stajek currently has two goals in the first two games of the season.

Sophomore Melissa Montesinos is another scoring threat along the front line.

Sophomore Gabbi Marques is a transfer who is now getting her feet wet with the Vikings’ program.

“She’s going to help us,” Farinola said of Marques, who will play either midfield or forward.

Another key contributor will be senior Nicole Guerra.

“Nicole does a little bit of everything for us,” Farinola said. “She’s a good person to have coming off the bench.”

The Vikings have some tough games ahead, like a showdown with Hasbrouck Heights this week.

“We really think we can be competitive again this season,” Farinola said. “After four games, we should know a lot about ourselves.”

What they have learned already is that life without Seca isn’t all that bad.

Jelcic said that he remembers when DiTonto arrived three seasons ago as a freshman.

“I remember he scored coming right out of the gate,” Jelcic said. “He had like two or three chances and knocked one in. I told him that he had to watch now, because the seniors were going to knock him around.”

“I remember talking with my coach and he reminded me that if I scored more goals, then people would want to try to stop me and mark me,” DiTonto said. “They’ll foul me hard. I had to be prepared for it. I think it will open up chances for other scorers if teams are marking me closely.”

So DiTonto is well on his way to topping last year’s goal scoring mark.

“I have to be able to keep it going,” DiTonto said.

DiTonto hopes that his scoring outburst might draw attention from the local college soccer coaches.

“I would love to play in college,” DiTonto said. “I would love to be like Giana. Hopefully, I can get there.”

Last Saturday night, after defeating Dwight-Englewood earlier in the day, DiTonto went to the Lyndhurst Recreation Facility to watch his sister play with her Felician teammates (and former Lyndhurst teammates Amanda Nowak, Joanna Arvanitakis and Dina Ingenito) against Georgian Court in their first home match of the season.

“It’s a different level when I watch her,” DiTonto said. “It’s fun to watch.”

Just like Jelcic has fun watching his striker score eight goals in a week.

“It’s a great soccer family that loves the game,” Jelcic said. “It’s just the way they were brought up.”

They obviously were raised the right way.

Richard Weikert Richard “Bobo” Weikert, 67, of North Port, Fla., died Sept. 9.

He was born in Jersey City to Elwood and Matilda Weikert.

Richard is survived by his niece Lisa Hargain and nephews, Michael and Anthony Romano.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Elwood and Matilda Weikert, and sister Rosemarie and her husband Anthony Romano.

Dr. Daniel ‘Dan’ Garfinkel Dr. Daniel “Dan” Garfinkel, 92, of Greensboro, N.C., died Monday, Sept. 5.

A private family graveside service took place Tuesday, Sept. 6.

Dan was born Feb. 27, 1924, in New York City, the third son of Aaron and Yetta Garfinkel.

Dan proudly served in the Prayer to St. Expedite May the intercession of the glorious Martyr, St. Expedite, recommend us, O my God, to Thy goodness, in order that his protection may obtain for us what our own merits are powerless to do. Amen.

We supplicate Thee Lord, to inspire, by Thy grace all our thoughts and actions. That thou being their principle, we may by the intercession of St. Expedite, be conducted with courage, fidelity and promptitude, at the time proper and favorable, and come to a good and happy end. U.S. Navy during World War II and was a graduate of Catawba College and Bowman Gray School of Medicine.

He was a beloved family physician in Kearny for 20 years before relocating to Greensboro, N.C., where he became associate director of the Family Practice Residency Program at Moses Cone Hospital.

Dan had a great interest in sports medicine and served as team doctor for Kearny High School (1970-1977), Page High School (1977-1992) and the Greensboro Hornets (1980-1991).

In addition to his parents, Dan was preceded in death by his brothers, Albert and Nathan.

Surviving is his loving wife of 64 years, Renee, and their three children, Dr. Ellen Koitz (Barry), Dr. Michael Garfinkel (Liz) and Steven Garfinkel (Darcy); and six grandchildren, Dr. Sara and David Garfinkel, Francie and Sami Koitz and Hannah and Emma Garfinkel.

Christine Ketz Christine Ketz, of North Arlington, died Sept. 10.

She was 45.

Visiting was at the Armitage & Wiggins Funeral Home, Kearny. A service was offered at the funeral home and burial was in Holy Cross Cemetery, North Arlington.

Christine was a registered nurse and worked at Endeavor House in Kearny. She sadly lost her battle against the disease of drug addiction.

Daughter of Helen (nee Robertson) and the late George Ketz, she was also the mother of Gabrielle Ketz and sister of Lisa Eager (Tom), Lauren Faucett, George Ketz and the late Thomas Ketz.

Jean M. Svec Jean M. Svec, of Tinton Falls, formerly of North Arlington, died Sept. 6.

She was 93.

Memorial visitation was at the Armitage & Wiggins Funeral Home, Kearny.

Born in Philadelphia, Mrs. Svec lived in North Arlington for 30 years before moving to Tinton Falls eight years ago.

She was a bank examiner with Federal Home and Loan Bank Board in New York City for 15 years.

She was a member of the North Arlington Senior Citizens Club and former member of St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church, Lyndhurst. She enjoyed folk and ballroom dancing.

He was an EMT with the Township of Nutley for the past 10 years. He was a New Jersey Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) at the age of 18. He was a former volunteer on the Kearny Volunteer Emergency Rescue Squad, a volunteer with the North Arlington Volunteer Emergency

Squad, where he met his wife 20 years ago and he was recently honored for 25 years of service with the Manasquan Fire Department.

Daniel was also the President of the Professional Car Society North East Chapter.

He was the beloved husband of Stefanie (Melton) McCann, the son of Daniel Jr. and Dorothy Mauer McCann, brother of Mary Beth Wilkinson (John Capone) and Laura Jo McCann, son-in-law of Steve and Sharon Trignano Melton and grandson of the late Daniel P. and Margaret Farrell McCann and Oscar J. and Mary J. Moran Mauer.

He is also survived by many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Gloria was a member of Hawthorne Gospel Church and a former member of the Christian Apostolic Church in Kearny and the Russian Orthodox Church of Mayfield. She was always energetically involved with celebrations, baptisms, weddings, holiday events, festivals and funerals at the churches.

Gloria was truly compassionate indeed and a tireless warrior in prayer, providing support to hurting and troubled souls. Deeply spiritual, her devotion to the Lord was an inspiration and a living example to many.

Her gift was in never-ending service to God and family. Gloria’s laugh and light-hearted personality made her a favorite with young and old alike. She displayed a deep love for God and her fellow man, which will stand as her lasting memorial for generations to come.
