Thieves plunder garden By Ron Leir Observer Correspondent KEARNY – It’s not just the planters who’ve been hard at work at the Kearny Community Garden. Some produce plunderers have also made their presence known, according to the garden’s overseers. Strangers have boldly gone to the Passaic Ave. site during daylight hours and helped themselves to some of the fresh vegetables as they’ve ripened, said Jenny and David Mach, two of the garden co-founders and committee members. One of the victims, new to the garden this season, discovered recently that a bunch of his tomatoes had been snatched and another grower lost some of her cucumbers, the Machs told The Observer. “We had a report from one of our members that she had just parked in the nearby lot, seeing two women going up and down each row of [straw] bales with a shopping bag and taking anything that was ripe,” David Mach said last week. “And, as soon as the member got out of her car, they bolted,” he added. Bail was set at $100,000, and Officers Derek Hemphill and Jordenson Jean were the lucky cops drawing the assignment to transport him to the county jail. When his restraints were removed at the jail, Beltran reportedly again became combative, and corrections officers had to use OC spray. Beltran was then taken to the Medical Center under guard by jail personnel. The second incident was logged at 11:40 a.m., Tuesday, July 21, when units were alerted to a man “perched on, walking on and jumping around on” the center divider of Harrison Ave. near Rt. 280. Officer Thomas Bannon arrived to find Varnell Richardson, 28, of Jersey City, atop the median, Dowie said. Bannon tried to coax him down, but Richardson reportedly jumped into the road, causing several oncoming vehicles to swerve. He then proceeded to jump

KEARNY – aybe it was the heat. Last week, which saw Kearny sweltering in torrid temperatures, found local cops with their hands full in not one, but two, bizarre incidents. One involved an out-ofcontrol arrestee who allegedly assaulted KPD officers and created a ruckus at the Hudson County Jail. The second concerned a man dancing atop the median and jumping into traffic on Harrison Ave. Both eventually ended up at Jersey City Medical Center for “evaluation.” At 7:30 p.m., Sunday, July 19, Kearny police headquarters “began receiving numerous calls” about a man who had been kicking cars and was now fighting with another individual in the area of Kearny and Midland Aves. Responding Officers Jose Resua, Jay Ward, Malinda Esposito and Luis Moran arrived on scene to find Christopher Beltran, 25, of Kearny, engaged in fisticuffs with a 28-year-old local man, Chief John Dowie reported. Police said witnesses agreed that Beltran had assaulted the other man without provocation. After the officers separated the combatants, Beltran reportedly remained belligerent, had to be forced into a patrol car and forcibly removed from same at HQ. There, he began to fight with and spit at Officers Sean Kelly, Ward and Moran, police said. When Sgt. Dave Rakowski tried to assist them in restraining him, Beltran bit the sergeant on the arm, Dowie said. The cops employed OC spray, “but the only effect was to enrage him,” the chief noted. When he was finally brought under control, Beltran was booked on three counts of aggravated assault on a police officer, one count of simple

The festival is part of the annual Summer Concert Series that the LYPAA has presented since its organization by founders/co-directors Jim Hooper and Gary Palmisano, both Little League coaches. This season, Hooper said, the group is hoping to extend the series with an October concert. Previously this summer, it has offered shows at the same venue on June 19 and 23. “The township Board of Commissioners and mayor are very generous, allowing us to use the Town Hall Park, and a special thanks to Parks & Recreation Commissioner Tom DiMaggio,” said Hooper. He also thanked the town for allowing his son, Jimmy Hooper and Gary’s kids Rachel and C.J. Palmisano, to open up for some of the Music Under the Stars concerts that the town sponsors. “Every other week,” Hooper noted, “one of our members will be performing at the Lyndhurst Farmers Market, from noon to 1 p.m., at the basketball courts across from the Lyndhurst Town Hall Park. The market is every Friday, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., through Oct. 30. “We also are looking to enter the Harrison Fest Pa-

rade on Sept. 19 in honor of the Town of Harrison’s 175th anniversary and also perform on stage at some of the three-day festivities, which run Sept. 18, 19 and 20.” The LYPAA was created to provide public performing opportunities for Lyndhurst youth singers, bands and musicians and, to date, the group has drawn about 40 youth performers, according to Hooper. It also includes one girl who performs ballet, he noted. “The township has provides us with a performing space and the Lyndhurst Board of Education has helped us by loaning us speakers and a sound board,” Hooper said. The association, which does not charge its members any entry fees, is now exploring the possibility of incorporating as a non-profit organization, he said. “I have appreciated everything this organization has done because I have always wanted to play on that stage,” said C.J. Palmisano, “and I’m fortunate enough to play there more than once.” C.J.’s sister Rachel and Jimmy Hooper echoed that. Rachel said it’s given her a chance to “share my original music with the community and collaborate with other musicians in my town,” while Jimmy added that, “As young musicians, we need these opportunities to help us develop and grow as performers.”

Currently, the vast majority of students need to register once when they enter the school district for the first time and then once more when beginning high school. For most, that equals just two residency checks in the 13 years from kindergarten to high school graduation.

That may be why from the 2004-05 school year to the present, enrollment in Kearny schools jumped 10.8%, increasing from 5,338 to 5,916 students. This is surprising because during the same time period, total enrollment in the state actually declined 1.5% and Kearny’s overall population was flat. With total spending per pupil in the Kearny district at $15,184, out-of-town students

in our schools impose an unfair burden on taxpayers and deprive worthy programs of tax resources. Other school districts like Nutley and Montclair have faced the same issue and have implemented more frequent re-registration requirements. Kearny should as well. We tend to be attracted to properties like the old Greystone Park (Psychiatric Hospital in Morris Plains) that is, unfortunately, being demolished. These are beautiful structures that can live on, if properly restored.” Asked if the company was concerned about possible disruption of the project, given the still pending litigation between the township and a would-be developer over the expansive lawn that provides frontage for the former hospital building along Belleville Ave., Valiotis said: “That’s none of our business. We see it as open space. The more green the better.” Next step, Valiotis said, will be completion of construction drawings and application for building permits. Selection of a general contractor has not yet been announced; Belleville Equities will provide on-site management, she said. Much of the old hospital building has undergone interior demolition, following damage previously done by vandals who reportedly tore out all of the old copper fittings during the lengthy

Essex County, which foreclosed on the 9.1-acre property after the cancer research facility went bust, auctioned the massive building and Belleville Equities, also known as Alma Realty, of Astoria, N.Y., was the successful bidder with a price of about $3.7 million in December 2012. The new owner was not required to go before the Zoning Board of Adjustment for a land use variance because multi-family residential is a permitted use under the redevelopment area plan for the site as adopted by the Belleville Township Council. Of the new apartments, 183 will be one-bedroom units, 42 will be two-bedroom units and 20 will be studios. Schematics submitted to the Planning Board showed that the apartments would be spread over eight floors, including a two- to fivestory addition to an existing two-story structure in the middle of the complex, and that there would be a central courtyard. The ground floor would contain three commercial spaces – a 2,700 square foot laundromat, 2,800 square foot convenience store and 1,600 square foot fitness center – all reserved for use by tenants only. There will be surface parking for a total of 345 vehicles – above the 247 required – including eight spaces reserved for disabled motorists. Also in the works: a storm water management facility, lighting and landscaping improvements.

The Planning Board attached a list of conditions to its site plan approval. To that end, Belleville Equities must: • Revise plans “to eliminate potential conflict where three driveways intersect” at the northeast corner of the property. • Provide the township with the right to access the property. • Negotiate a redevelopment agreement with the township prior to getting a certificate of occupancy.

As part of its Chapter 11 reorganization, A&P is looking “to enter into a $100 million debtor-in possession financing agreement with Fortress Investment Group … to continue operating its [remaining] stores, pay its suppliers, vendors, employees and others in the ordinary course of business.” This strategy, the company said, “is the best way for A&P to preserve as many jobs as possible, and maximize value for all stakeholders. … And while the decision to close some stores is always difficult, these actions will enable the company to refocus its efforts to ensure the vast majority of A&P stores continue operating under new owners as a result of the court-supervised process.” Employees at Belleville Food Basics on Main St., which began life as a Grand Union in the 1970s and switched over to its current operators about a decade ago, are hopeful about the future, said John Niccollai, president of Local 464A, United Food & Commercial Workers. The union represents the store’s 16 full-time and 56 part-time workers, he said. A good portion of those workers live in The Observer’s coverage area: 20 are Belleville residents, 9 are from Kearny, three from Nutley, two from Bloomfield and one from Lyndhurst, according to Niccollai. But all four will share the honor of wearing the uniform of a Belleville police officer. Township Clerk Kelly Cavanaugh swore in the rookies last Thursday in a brief ceremony held in the council chambers at the Municipal Building with Police Chief Joseph P. Rotonda presiding. Relatives and friends of the appointees attended, along

with members of the Township Council and township interim manager Kevin Esposito, who offered congratulations. But they didn’t have much chance to celebrate since, the day after, they were scheduled to begin their training at the Bergen County Police Academy which, Rotonda warned, “is one of the toughest in the state.” Still, Rotonda said, “it’s a happy day for us, which we don’t get a lot of,” because the department is getting a boost with the new hires authorized by the governing body.

“This brings us to five shy of the total strength of 112 we’re allowed by township ordinance,” the chief told The Observer. The new offiers are: Matt Kondrack, Angelo Liloia, Damian Kluss and Reynal Ferrer. Kondrack, a 2010 Belleville High School graduate who has attended Montclair University and Caldwell, is a nephew of retired Capt. Chris Kondrack, brother of Lt. Kearny boys’ camp proves that interest in basketball exists Jovan George is an aspiring basketball player with a huge upside – his tremendous frame. George is only a 10-year-old fifth grader at Kearny’s Franklin School, but he stands about 5-foot-9, which makes him fit in with any member of the Kearny High freshman class. While George may be four years away from high school, it’s never too early to get a head start. So that’s why the youngster attended the Kearny High School Boys’ Basketball camp recently. “Football is my first love, but right now, basketball is my favorite sport,” George said. “It always changes.” George was one of approximately 50 young men who attended the week-long camp. “I was taught to shoot with my fingertips,” George said. “When I shoot with my fingertips, I can make a lot more shots. I can see a big improvement in my shots. It’s been a lot of fun. I’m glad I came this year.” Kearny High School head varsity coach Bob McDonnell organized the camp for the third

straight year. McDonnell is encouraged by the amount of talent he saw in the camp. “What shocked me this year was that there were a lot of returnees, kids who came back from last year and this year brought their relatives and friends with them. And of the 50 kids, at least 30 of them were from Kearny. That made it really nice.” McDonnell said that many of his current varsity players served as camp counselors, so it gave them a responsibility. “The counselors did a good job of keeping the kids’ attention and teaching them the necessary fundamentals of basketball,” said McDonnell, who oversaw his own camp for a third time. McDonnell also ran a PAL basketball camp for youngsters in Kearny prior to him being hired as the head boys’ basketball coach at the school. “The best thing was talking to some of the kids in the camp about what they learned,” McDonnell said. “I talked to the kids about what they learned each day. see VIEW page

Kaitlyn, 14, will enter Kearny High in the fall. “Whenever someone asks me, I have to tell them the whole story about being related,” Kaitlyn Aquino said. “It’s hard to be better than Janitza, but I do have a lot of fun playing basketball.” Aquino said that she learned how to pivot, then turn and shoot. She also worked on her ball handling. “I’m very excited to get the chance to play for Coach Hill,” Aquino said. Alyssa Deo is a 12-year-old resident of Verona. Her mother, Tammy Bubenas, was a teammate of Hill’s at Harrison High and Pace University. Her grandfather, Joseph Bubenas, ran Harrison Recreation for a while, so Deo has some strong athletic genes. “I’m usually a guard, but I learned how to post up down low,” Deo said. “I never had to learn how to do that before.” Diana DeSousa is already a member of the Kearny girls’ basketball program, having just finished her freshman year at the school. So DeSousa knew what to expect from the camp. “This just gave me the chance to have more practice,” DeSousa said. “This will help me get started for the upcoming season. I think I developed more as a defensive player.” All in all, Hill enjoyed working with all the girls. Some 72 in all attended the camp. “It was a good turnout,” Hill said. “We had some girls who came for the first time. But we’re seeing some girls that were here at age 7 and are still coming back again at age 11 or so. It says we must be doing something right.” That’s for sure.

It’s important to get the parents involved.” For McDonnell, coordinating the camp brought him back to his roots. Before he became a high school and college coach, McDonnell was a youth basketball coach, back in his younger days in Jersey City and then he became a Kearny police officer. “One of the things that brings me the most enjoyment is watching the kids learn,” McDonnell said. “They’re all bright-eyed, watching and learning. It’s very refreshing.” Gabriel Ferreira was one of those intent students of basketball. Ferreira goes to Roosevelt School in Kearny and loves the Miami Heat, although his favorite player used to be LeBron James, before James flew the coop and headed back to his native Cleveland. “Dwyane Wade is my favorite now,” Ferreira said boldly. Ferreira was asked about the one thing he learned more than anything else over the course of the week. “The jab step,” Ferreira said. “You take a step at the guy guarding you, then you go right around him.” It was an excellent answer. “When I saw this in the paper, I knew I had to come,” Ferreira said. “At first, I thought it might be boring, but it has turned out to be a lot of fun. If it weren’t for this camp, I’d probably be doing nothing right now, just sitting at home and watching TV. Now I wish I could always play all

of fun.” The one thing that was noticeable was the attention span of the campers. It was downright sweltering in the Kearny gym, with only a few doors open for ventilation, but providing very little solace. Most kids would not have handled the swelter, but the campers were so tuned in that they didn’t pay any attention to the heat. “I’m very happy with that,” McDonnell said. “It says we must be doing something right.” Photo by Jim Hague

I feel like I’ve been getting better as the week goes on.” Andrew Shenoda is 15 and will be a sophomore at Kearny High. He was a member of the freshman team last year, but there’s no guarantee that he will remain a part of the Kearny program. “I think this helped me a lot,” Shenoda said. “I feel like I’m a better player, especially shooting the ball. I really needed improvement and this really helped me. I want to keep improving. It’s been a lot

The Kearny Butterfly Garden has been accorded recognition by the National Wildlife Federation, the country’s largest wildlife conservation and education organization. In a July 22 announcement, the NWF said the KBG has successfully created a “certified wildlife habitat.” The announcement commended David Mach and fellow gardeners for developing a space “that improves habitat for birds, butterflies, frogs

and other wildlife by providing … natural food sources, clean water, cover and places to raise young.” Said Mach: “Working with the wonderful people of Kearny to redesign otherwise vacant space to make it more inviting to wildlife not only gives us something to enjoy but also helps us to be greener. “The Kearny Butterfly Garden’s habitat has dozens of flower varieties that bloom year after year, using organic fer-

tilizers that attract not only butterflies, but all sorts of insects and bees, turtles, rabbits, snakes, possum, raccoons, birds, and yes, even groundhogs,” Mach said. John was predeceased by his parents Louise (nee Di Lorenzo) and Edward De Stefanis. He is survived by his loving sister and brother-inlaw Patricia and David Cilo; his adoring niece Stephanie Cilo Faragi and her husband Dean; and his beloved grandnephew Nicholas and grandnieces Elizabeth and Charlotte Lynn. He also leaves behind his loving cousins, devoted friends, and his “special” family at the Promise House at Lyons, Va. A memorial service will be

NJ Transit bus hits tree, 6 taken to area hospital KEARNY – Six people were hurt when a commuter bus struck a tree on Belgrove Drive at 8:15 a.m. this past Monday, police said. Kearny Police Sgt. John Taylor, traffic supervisor, said the

driver of a No. 76 NJ Transit bus heading toward North Arlington told police he was traveling south on Belgrove and pulling into a stop at Woodland Ave. to pick up riders when his brakes failed. As he tried to slow

the bus, it ran into a tree, the operator told responding officers. Taylor said that six people were removed from the bus with minor injuries and were taken to St. Michael’s Medical Center, Newark, for treatment.

NJ Transit responded and towed the bus to one of its garages, Taylor said. No summonses have been issued and the accident remains under investigation, he added. – Ron Leir
