CITY’S RICH HISTORY

LEXINGTON TELLING THE STORY OF

Lexington: 250 Years, a new documentary from KET, begins just as the establishment of the city did in early June 1775 as explorer William McConnell and his crew sit around a fire and, showing the utmost faith in the outcome of the Battle at Lexington that would ultimately kick off the Revolutionary War, decide to name this new settlement-to-be Lexington, as well.

“It’s important to start at the very beginning,” Bickel said. “There’s such a rich history; to skip ahead at all would do a disservice to the entire timeline.”

As the film progresses, interviews carry the viewer through the history of the founding, establishment, struggles, advancement, present day and future of the city. Prominent historians and librarians, curators, geologists and more join the narrator, actor and Lexington native Josh Hopkins in telling the tale of “The Athens of the West.”

“We sought interviewees that would bring an academic perspective to the subject from a wide range of specialties,” says KET Director of Production Matt Grimm. “Lexingtonians love their history and enjoy telling it,” adds Bickel.

Production of a film about a subject that existed before photography was not without difficulties. “Finding relevant visual material for the periods prior to the advent of photography was especially challenging,” Grimm points out. Bickel lauds the local archives

made available to the film’s production team. “We are fortunate to have libraries at the University of Kentucky and Transylvania University that have extensive digital collections with images of Lexington’s past. Also, The Lexington Herald-Leader has created an excellent online archive of photos.” Grimm also acknowledged the value of contributed material from museums, the national archives and even personal collections.

Compressing a 250-year history into one film is no small task. “Not everything that could be included in the program is; we tried to ensure that as many significant moments as possible were included,” Grimm observed. “So many events are interconnected or build one upon the other; you can see why it’s three hours long.” Deciding what to include wasn’t easy. “There comes a point where you just can’t incorporate all the events you want to,” Bickel said from an editing suite at KET, adding finishing touches to the film. “Ultimately, you must make the hard decision about what does not fit in. We could have made an entire second film from what we had to cut from this one.”

Not to worry, though. The film leaves plenty. Viewers learn about the early Adena peoples who inhabited the area, a schoolteacher who encountered – in his classroom – a live wildcat he fought off barehanded, one of the first public libraries in the nation, the history of Gratz Park and early days of the Thoroughbred

Edward

The Bahamas Scandals

KET Monday, Oct. 6 • 9/8 pm

This documentary uncovers a web of blackmail, money laundering and murder during the controversial couple’s exile in the Bahamas. Newly recovered FBI and government records reveal shocking secrets, ranging from lavish spending to fraternizing with known Nazi sympathizers.

King of Them All: The Story of King Records

KET Friday, Oct. 10 • 9/8 pm

Founded in 1943 by Syd Nathan, King Records played a central role in shaping American popular music — from rock ‘n’ roll to soul and funk — while operating as one of the few fully integrated businesses in segregated America. Through interviews and restored archival materials, the film showcases King’s boundary-breaking artists such as James Brown, Hank Ballard and Nina Simone.

KET Wednesday, Oct. 22 • 10/9 pm

In 2023, codebreakers announced that they succeeded in decoding the secret correspondence of one of the most tragic characters in European history: Mary, Queen of Scots. Composed of 57 letters written in a code consisting of at least 150,000 different symbols, the correspondence between Mary and the French ambassador to England details Mary’s efforts to free herself and gain advantage over her rival, Queen Elizabeth. After four centuries, Mary’s urgent pleas are revealed.

KET2 Tuesday, October 28 • 9/8 pm

This two-part, three-hour film is an incisive portrait of the enigmatic powerbroker who served in the topmost echelons of American foreign policy under six presidents, Democrats and Republicans, with equal dedication. NOVA: Superfloods

KET Wednesday, Oct. 29 • 9/8 pm

KET2 Sunday, Nov. 2 • 8/7 pm

In September 2024, Hurricane Helene dumped 14 inches of rain on Asheville, North Carolina and surrounding areas, triggering flash floods and mudslides that killed more than 100 and caused over $50 billion dollars of damage. A shocked nation wondered how a city 2,000 feet above sea level and more than 250 miles inland — hailed as a “climate haven” for immigrants from other parts of the country — could have suffered such a fate.

Michele Ripley thanked Kristi Runyon Middleton of Lexmark for their continued support of SummerPledge.

KET Deserves Our Voice and Our Support

Bill Jones is a longtime board member of the Commonwealth Fund for KET. He recently wrote and shared this op-ed with newspapers across the state. We’re pleased to share it with you.

I’ve been fortunate in life. But, I never forget where that fortune began: with a mother who made sure I had the chance to grow up in a home that was stable and safe, and a community that gave me access to opportunity. That kind of foundation doesn’t just happen. It takes people who care enough to invest in others, and institutions strong enough to serve every corner of the state.

Kentucky Educational Television is one of those institutions. And right now, it needs our support.

KET is one of the largest public television networks in the United States, serving more than two million people each week. Their mission has always been to improve the lives of Kentuckians, from early childhood education to adult workforce training, civic engagement to public health resources. It’s a statewide commitment. And it’s not political. It’s practical. It reflects who we are. That’s why the recent decision to rescind federal funding to KET is so troubling.

As a board member of the Commonwealth Fund for KET, I’ve seen firsthand the extraordinary impact this organization has across our 120 counties. Whether it’s helping a child learn to read, preparing a high school student for college, or broadcasting public health updates to rural communities, KET is often the differencemaker. For so many Kentuckians, it’s not just educational television, it’s their trusted connection to opportunity.

As a lifelong fiscal conservative, I understand the importance of budget discipline. I believe every public dollar should serve the public good. And that’s exactly what KET does. The return on investment is extraordinary: a few million dollars unlocks access to free, high-quality education and trusted information for millions of Kentuckians. No subscription fees. No political spin. Just service.

Here’s the fiscal reality: about $4.2 million of KET’s annual budget comes from federal funding through the CPB. These funds make possible local productions like Kentucky Edition, Comment on Kentucky, and supports coverage of the General Assembly. They help bring high-quality, non-partisan content into homes from Pikeville to Paducah.

Since 1969, the federal funding has complemented the investment made by the Commonwealth of Kentucky. This

commitment reflects broad, bipartisan support for KET’s mission and long-standing value to our state.

That’s what makes the current situation so frustrating. We’re penalizing one of the most effective, non-partisan, communityfocused organizations in the country. That’s not accountability; it’s collateral damage.

But we still have a choice. And we still have a voice.

If you’ve benefited from KET, if you’ve watched it, learned from it, or trusted it to bring your community into focus, now is the time to step forward. Private donations matter. Every gift is a statement that this work matters, and that we’re willing to invest in the lives of our neighbors.

While individual support will help, it can’t solve the full deficit caused by the loss of federal funds. I’m calling on our Kentucky delegation and public officials to push back against this cut. We need a solution that restores funding to non-partisan public broadcasters like KET.

Again, this is not about politics. It’s about public service. It’s about keeping promises to families who count on us to deliver access, connection, and opportunity, regardless of income or ZIP code.

We often say that Kentucky takes care of its own. That’s our reputation. This is our chance to prove it. I’m proud to support KET because it represents the best of what we can do when we come together; not for political gain, but for the good of our people. It’s time to make sure KET has what it needs to keep doing that work.

My mother always said, “What’s right is right, and what’s wrong is wrong.” Supporting KET is about more than funding. It’s about protecting what brings us together and doing right by the next generation of Kentuckians.

William “Bill” Jones is an independent board director and longtime advocate for Kentucky communities. He serves on the board of the Commonwealth Fund for KET.
