KENTUCKY ’S NEEDS John Domaschko

hen John Domaschko first joined KET’s governing board in 1994, he acknowledges he didn’t know a whole lot about the network aside from that it delivered educational content to Kentucky schools and aired television programs he enjoyed.

But as he learned more about KET’s role serving the Common2

wealth, his appreciation for the network deepened.

“It became clear to me early on that KET was making a difference every day in people’s lives,” said Domaschko, an accounting executive from Covington. “Whether it was supporting emergency responders through its transmission network, enhancing children’s education with classroom resources, or

helping people earn their GED and hone their workplace skills to get a job; the more I learned about KET, the more I wanted to be involved with it.”

And become involved, he did.

Domaschko went on to join the Commonwealth Fund for KET, the network’s fundraising body for private and corporate support, which he continues to serve on today. He

Over three decades of volunteer board service, Domaschko said he was continually moved by KET’s unwavering commitment to meeting the needs of the people of Kentucky.

“The most impressive part, to me, is that KET never lost its way,” Domaschko said. “KET has always understood that education is its primary mission, and it has never lost sight of that. Everything KET does is designed to educate, inspire and inform.”

A case in point, he said, is KET’s programming. Whether national programs such as Nova, Nature, or Finding Yours Roots or local productions such as Kentucky Edition, Kentucky Health or Kentucky Tonight, KET engages Kentuckians in important conversations across a variety of genres, he said.

“So much media today appeals and even panders to pre-conceived notions rather than discussing other points of view,” Domaschko said.

“KET strives to provoke thought, not anger. It covers topics, issues and stories that others can’t or won’t.

In a world where there is so much skepticism about the reliability of what we hear in the media, KET is a near singular source of bringing light to the issues of our Commonwealth

and our nation.”

Additionally, KET has continually adapted with the times, keeping abreast of changes in technology to ensure that Kentuckians can access programs and resources, whether they’re using a phone, tablet, computer or television.

“KET does a great job of reaching people wherever they might be in their lives and making sure they have access to the tools that help them succeed,” Domaschko said.

One of the highlights of serving on KET’s boards, he said, is that he receives a transcription of viewer comments. Reading the packet, he said, has become a favorite monthly ritual, one that continually reinforces the difference KET makes in Kentuckians’ lives.

He recalled a comment that left an impression on him: It was from a woman who said, in her younger years, she had been a dancer but was now in a wheelchair. She called to say how much she enjoyed KET’s arts programming.

“She closed her comment by saying that the previous night she had watched a ballet program on KET and that, for an hour, she danced again,” Domaschko said. “I get a little choked up just thinking about it, but that’s the kind of impact that KET has. And that’s what’s kept me involved with KET and public television all these years. It’s time well-spent.”

TODAY’S KET As we head into a new year, we look forward to the many new programs and educational services that our dedicated staff will bring Kentuckians during KET’s 55th year.

It’s also a perfect time to look back in appreciation to all those who’ve helped us get here.

KET has been so fortunate to have people like John invest their time and talents to serve on KET’s boards, whether our governing authority or our fundraising board (and in John’s case, both!). The commitment of our board members truly makes a difference for KET, and in turn for the people of Kentucky.

Likewise, the many volunteers who’ve served on the Friends of KET through the years have provided an essential connection between KET and the areas they represent across the state. KET is fortunate to have such wonderful ambassadors.

It was Kentucky’s legislature that established KET, and we’re thankful for their continued support over the years. And last, but certainly not least, we’re grateful for the support we receive every day from viewers like you.

Together, it’s this community that has helped make KET what it is and continues to move us forward.

MASTERPIECE & MYSTERIES

Sunday nights on KET are reserved for some of television’s best dramatic series, and this month brings new episodes of several Masterpiece favorites as well as a new mystery series to enjoy.

New season of veterinarian adventures

All Creatures Great and Small, the heartwarming series from Masterpiece based on the tales of James Herriot, returns with a new season.

The series chronicles the humorous adventures of a young veterinarian in 1930s rural England as he goes about tending to his menagerie of memorable animal patients and their colorful owners.

From Kentucky farms to your kitchen and table The Farmer & The Foodie returns this month with an allnew season exploring Kentucky farms and scrumptious recipes.

The new season, which premieres Saturday, Jan. 7, finds hosts Maggie Keith and Lindsey McClave learning about the benefits of draft animals and raw milk; visiting a pair of farms run by military veterans; harvesting and feeding sorghum through a 100-year-old mill; exploring Kentucky’s native fruit, the pawpaw; and rolling up their sleeves on a Henry County shrimp farm.

Each episode goes behind-the-scenes with Kentucky farmers to see first-hand how the food is made, and afterward the hosts take what they’ve learned into the kitchen to create a delicious meal to share with their guests.

It’s a wonderful ‘Kentucky Life’ Kentucky Life returns with new episodes this month, beginning Jan. 21.

The series, now in its 28th year, features a new host this season: Chip Polston.

“As a lifelong Kentuckian, the opportunity to go out and tell stories about my home is beyond exciting to me,” Polston said. “I can’t wait to get out into our beautiful Commonwealth and meet the fascinating people who make this state so special.”

Traveling across the state, Polston will explore a variety of Kentucky communities and traditions, spotlighting such stories as the theater under the stars

at the Pioneer Playhouse in Danville, Kentucky’s own version of Stonehenge in Munfordville, the Hillbilly Days festival in Pikeville, the firm-footed work of the Red River Gorge Trail Crew, the work of painters and photographers documenting Appalachia, as well as dozens of others!

Join host Henry Louis Gates Jr. as he uses cutting-edge DNA research and old-school genealogical sleuthing to help some of the nation’s most compelling personalities discover the surprising stories buried within their own families’ histories. Guests for the program’s ninth season include Edward Norton, Julia Roberts, Claire Danes, Cyndi Lauper, Carol Burnett, Danny Trejo and Viola Davis, among others.

In the 1920s, two men designed a machine that could tell if a person was lying. Called the polygraph, their lie detector transformed police work and seized headlines, soon becoming the nation’s “mechanical conscience” and billed as an infallible crime-fighting tool. But controversies soon followed, as this tale of good intentions spun into one of twisted morals and unintended consequences.
