he importance of community partnerships was first impressed upon Jim Allen when he was in his early 20s, fresh out of graduate school and beginning his career.

Allen got involved with a YMCA youth shelter downtown, and the experience gave him a better understanding that many children didn’t have the same advantages that he had enjoyed growing up.

“What I witnessed there really got my attention,” Allen said. “I got to see the resilience of these young people, and at the same time I gained an appreciation for my own upbringing.”

Forty years later, Allen is now vice chairman of R.W. Baird & Co., and his commitment to investing in community organizations, he says, has only deepened.

It’s also one of the reasons he’s a big supporter of KET, which he says plays a vital role in Kentucky’s communities.

This month, Masterpiece begins a new season of All Creatures Great and Small as well as a new adaptation of Around the World in 80 Days. There’s also new Nature and Nova specials showcasing extraordinary perspectives – from the polar bears’ tundra home to the amazing migratory paths of butterflies.

Looking ahead to February, a new KETproduced series will examine the under-told story of lung disease, talking with public health researchers and advocates fighting for Kentuckians’ health. And after the first season of Sanditon left us on the edge of our seats with its cliff-hanger ending, we finally get a continuation of the story in March.

comes to KET this month with an innovative new adaptation of Jules Verne’s classic novel Around The World In Eighty Days.

David Tennant stars as the Englishman who bets a fortune he can circumnavigate the planet in a mere eighty days—quite a feat, considering it’s 1872. Ibrahim Koma and Leonie Benesch costar as his intrepid traveling companions on an expedition that packs far more adventure than the trio bargained for.

east from London on October 5, 1872, intending to make it back to the reading room of the city’s snobbish Reform Club no later than one o’clock on Christmas Eve. Remembering John Hall of Ashland, Inc., a devoted Kentucky philanthropist John Hall, former CEO of Ashland, Inc,, passed in November of last year at age 89.

Hall, whose life was detailed in the 2016 KET documentary John Hall: Kentucky Commodore, was also a dedicated philanthropist, spearheading efforts to support a variety of Kentucky causes, including the state’s public education system and cancer research. Hall likewise was a longtime supporter of KET, helping to establish KET’s Commonwealth Fund in 1995.

Hall’s family suggests donations in his memory be made to the John R. Hall Endowment for Education, found at KET.org/JohnHall.

In November, KET aired Comment on Kentucky Remembers Al Smith, a special episode honoring longtime host, the late Al Smith, who died in 2021. Hosted by Renee Shaw, the program included Al Cross, John David Dyche, Mark Hebert, and Jamie Lucke. The program is available for streaming at KET.org/AlSmith KET.org/AlSmith. The popular, annual contest encourages students to celebrate the power of crafting stories, poems and illustrations by submitting their own original work and includes a new category this year: graphic novels!

Winners will be selected and prizes will be awarded.

MORE TO EXPLORE Film explores Muhammad Ali’s relationship with hometown of Louisville This locally-produced film explores Muhammad Ali’s lifelong relationship with his hometown of Louisville.

The narrative follows Ali’s funeral procession in 2016, which drew more than 100,000 people along the streets of his hometown and packed the KFC YUM! Center for his memorial service. Through candid interviews with friends and relatives, viewers get a behind-the-scenes account of this unprecedented celebration of one man’s life. The film features interviews with Ali’s family members, Evander Holyfield, Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer and many others.
