DOUBLING DOWN FOR KENTUCKY’S FUTURE

For Bowling Green attorney Mike Owsley, supporting KET isn’t just about a monetary donation, it’s a personal commitment. A longtime member of KET’s Commonwealth Fund board, Owsley has watched for decades as the network has connected Kentuckians through education, news and storytelling.

“I’ve been a supporter of KET for many years,” he said. “What they do in terms of public affairs programming – Comment on Kentucky, for example – is extremely valuable. It’s informative, it’s fair – Kentucky Tonight is one of the best programs going anywhere. [KET’s] public affairs coverage gives people the

opportunity to hear unbiased discussions about what’s happening in our state.” Continuing, he adds “it’s so important to be educated about these issues. KET gives you what you need to know in an unbiased, impartial manner. You just come away a much better-informed citizen.”

Owsley believes that KET’s

I recently made the decision –I’m doubling my contribution from last year, and I challenge others to do the same.
MIKE OWSLEY Partner, English, Lucas, Priest & Owsley, LLP

strength lies not only in public affairs but in education, an area where the network’s reach has been transformative. “It provides resources to schools and teachers all across Kentucky, particularly in rural areas that don’t have the same access to materials. The programs they produce and distribute have helped raise the level of education in this state.”

“It also brings education into the home. There are a lot of parents who can’t always help their children with schoolwork, and KET is like a second teacher in the room. It teaches in a way that’s easy to understand and enjoyable about the world and about what they need to know to become successful as they grow up.”

“KET serves a hugely valuable purpose in the state,” Owsley said. “It reaches people who might not otherwise have access to the same opportunities for education or information.”

Owsley recognizes this is why the Kentucky state legislature established KET more than 60 years ago and why continued support from the state is essential. However, he also acknowledges funding challenges due to the elimination of federal funding

and the impact this is having on the network.

“That loss [of funding] affects the very programming that keeps Kentuckians informed and educated. But we’re not going to give up, we’re going to dig in and fight harder.”

For Owsley, giving to KET isn’t simply about maintaining an institution, it’s about preserving a lifeline of access and understanding for generations of Kentuckians. It is so important that we not lose some of these programs for the next generation.”

He’s taking the challenge personally, too. “I recently made the decision - I’m doubling my contribution from last year, and I challenge others to do the same,” adding, “we have 30-plus lawyers here at [our firm in] Bowling Green. I know they all share my support and belief that KET serves a hugely valuable purpose in this state.”

Doubling his contribution and advocating for others to do the same reflects a simple message and mission. “I’m a big supporter of KET. It’s something we have to support.”

TODAY’S KET

It’s been a challenging year for KET, yet we’ve been heartened by the outpouring of support that so many of you have shown through your kind words, as well as your generous financial support.

Despite the challenges, this has also been a rewarding year with many new programs and services.

Among 2025’s highlights, we began the year by unveiling our Louisville Production Center. Providing an even stronger connection to Kentucky’s largest city, several programs are produced through this new studio, including Inside Louisville, Kentucky Health, News Quiz and others.

With full-house screening events, KET premiered two of our new productions: Rick Steves’ Europe with the Louisville Orchestra and Lexington: 250 Years, as well as special screenings of Ken Burns’ The American Revolution.

KET’s The Next Chapter continued providing forums on the issues, concerns and rewards of one’s golden years. Public affairs series including Kentucky Edition and Kentucky Tonight drew on multiple perspectives to keep viewers informed, while Kentucky Life shared more fascinating stories from around the Commonwealth.

In response to new legislation requiring cursive handwriting instruction, we developed and launched Cursive Connection, with lessons for students and guides for teachers. Let’s Learn Kentucky continued supporting kindergarten readiness, while FastForward and Workplace Essential Skills helped adult learners.

Throughout the year, popular series including Antiques Roadshow, Movie Classics, Doc Martin, Finding Your Roots and Masterpiece dramas were enjoyed. And of course, children continued to rely on PBS KIDS’ collection of entertaining and educational programs.

All of this and more are made possible with your support! Thank you!

During this holiday season, we want to express our gratitude and appreciation, and to wish you and your family a wonderful new year.

Sincerely,

KET’s WinterPledge is Nov. 29-Dec. 7. With your donation, you help keep favorites on the air like Masterpiece, Finding Your Roots, Kentucky Life, Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood and more. This season of giving, your support means more than ever, and your donation helps us carry on with our mission of enriching the lives of Kentuckians by educating, informing, inspiring and connecting people of every age and circumstance.

COMING NEXT MONTH

Beginning in January, Visions will have a new look and more compact format. It will still provide the program information you need and other highlights, while helping reduce the expense to KET.

The new format should also result in more timely mail processing and hopefully delivery to you - an issue that we know has been frustrating for you and for us. Although we’ve been told this should help, KET’s non-profit mail class will still come with the lowest postal delivery priority for the USPS.

Lexington: 250 Years Premiere

Guests recently helped KET celebrate the premiere of KET's Lexington: 250 Years at The Kentucky Theatre. Following a reception, Nick Nicholson, chair of the Commonwealth for KET board, and KET Executive Director and CEO Shae Hopkins welcomed more than 600 people to the screening. Hopkins stated, “this was an ambitious undertaking, and we are looking forward to sharing it with viewers across the Commonwealth and contributing this historical perspective to the celebration of Lexington’s semi-quincentennial anniversary.”

Spurlock Celebrates 40 Years of Service

KET Friends Member Elsa Spurlock of London, Kentucky celebrates 40 years of dedicated volunteer service in 2025. Joining the board in 1981, Spurlock served as President from 2001-2002. She was the O. Leonard Press Award recipient in 2004 for volunteer service. We thank Elsa for her years of support on behalf of KET!
