TODAY’S KET

As the school year continues, we’re proud of the many resources we offer to educators every day to help enhance student learning and the classroom experience.

Cursive Connection is a fun and modern way to teach this classic skill of handwriting. In conjunction with our nation’s 250th anniversary, several learning resources are available for nearly every grade level, including those derived from Ken Burns’ recent The American Revolution documentary series.

This month is also Autism Acceptance Month, and KET has helpful resources for families with children on the autism spectrum, including the Carl the Collector animated series and the new “Collecting Creativity” activity guide.

Many more of KET’s educational tools and resources can be discovered at PBS LearningMedia, where KET continues to be a primary producer of educational content.

And beyond producing resources, we look forward to once again participating in the Student Technology Leadership Program (STLP) State Championship this month and announcing the winners of our 2026 Young Writers Contest in May!

Thank you for supporting our mission to educate and inspire learners of all ages.

Shae Hopkins KET Executive Director and CEO Sincerely,

When Kentucky Senate Bill 167 passed in 2024 mandating that all elementary schools incorporate cursive instruction into their curriculum, Waco Elementary School teachers worried about how they would work another lesson plan into their already busy agendas. Then, they learned about a ready-made resource collection available from KET

– Cursive Connection

“It makes it easy to teach and deliver the product without having to do a lot of pre-planning. It’s all done for you,” says Erica Tucker, a Madison County student support service specialist. She created Waco’s cursive writing program in August. “I loved that Cursive Connection has PDFs of the cursive writing worksheets, so you can print those off ahead of time. That’s all the prep you have to do.”

and in a sentence. Each letter has a separate video, which teachers can access through YouTube or KET.org/Cursive

“(Students) have access on their Chromebooks when we are in our small groups so they can rewind as needed,” says Kristie Johnson, a paraeducator who now teaches cursive writing. “They are able to do it on their own, at their own pace.”

( Cursive Connection ) makes it easy to teach and deliver the product without having to do a lot of pre-planning. It’s all done for you.”

- Erica Tucker

Cursive Connection walks students through the cursive writing process, starting by teaching them how to situate their bodies, position their paper and hold their pencils. Then, they write the letter in the air, on paper

Cursive Connection was the type of versatile, useful tool Tucker and Johnson had come to expect from KET.

“There really is something for everyone on KET, from preschool, pre-K, even up to high school,” Johnson says. “So (KET’s reach) is pretty broad.”

KET’s library of resources is like Google for teachers, Tucker says. Whenever teachers have a lesson, they can search KET and most likely find materials available.

“Their resources are trustworthy, and there is a vast selection of materials to pull from,” Tucker adds. “I can quickly type in any theme, any topic and find something that I know I can confidently put in front of the kids.”

Erica Tucker (right) introduced Cursive Connection to Waco Elementary in August and Kristie Johnson (left) now uses it weekly to teach fifth graders how to write.

FLIPPING THE SCRIPT

For nearly 250 years, America has celebrated its grassroots efforts to overthrow British rule and assert its independence as a new nation. Now, Lucy Worsley investigates the other side of that story.

The famous historian is examining the American revolution from the British perspective in Lucy Worsley Investigates: The American Revolution to see what really happened. She uncovers espionage, ulterior motives for independence, and the revolution’s transformative impact on America and Great Britain.

Lucy’s deep dive is the perfect counterpart to an encore presentation of The American Revolution. The six-part, 12-hour documentary shows how the 13 colonies united to fight for freedom, establish a new government and inspire nations throughout the world.

Localizing the conflict, KET produced Kentucky Origins: The Battle of Blue Licks about the state’s bloodiest day of the revolution when 72 militia members were killed. The digital video is funded in part by the Kentucky Historical Society and the America250KY Commission.

A Kentucky Capitol Thank You

Representing regions across the state, the volunteer group Friends of KET gathered for their annual “Day at the Capitol” to thank members of the General Assembly for supporting KET’s

An Evening Full of Heart

KET’s 38th annual Summer Celebration, Cheers to 250 Years, will be held Saturday, June 6, at Donamire Farm in Lexington. Join us and Honorary Chair Ryan Quarles as we eat, dance and toast America’s 250th birthday. Learn more and buy your tickets to support KET’s programs and services at KET.org/SummerCelebration

KET’s Louisville Regional Fund Board hosted its 27th annual gala on Valentine’s Day at The Olmsted. Honorary Chairs Diane Medley and Prewitt Lane (top image, at right), along with past chairs Alice and Wade Houston, welcomed a sold-out crowd for silent and live auctions and dancing. Proceeds benefited KET’s mission to educate, connect and inspire.

‘Kentucky Life’ Past and Present

Former Kentucky Life host Byron Crawford and current host Chip Polston met in February to catch up and swap stories. Chip grew up watching Byron and was inspired by his Courier-Journal reporting and Kentucky Life programs. Spending time with someone he considers a mentor is something he says he will always treasure.
