Christmas 1958 is not just about the opening of presents, but also about the closing of deep wounds. An unexploded bomb has been uncovered and the district has to be evacuated. As the community struggles to stop Christmas being reduced to ashes, the Nonnatus House staff reaches out to those in need and keeps spirits high, rekindling the spirit of the Blitz.

The drama begins with a look at Elizabeth’s turbulent early years from age three when her mother was executed and she was declared illegitimate and banished from court.

Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts presents the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor to 11-time Emmy winner Julia Louis-Dreyfus, who has starred in the acclaimed comedies Seinfeld and Veep.

The program features a star-studded cast, including Stephen Colbert, Bryan Cranston, Tina Fey, Ilana Glazer, Tony Hale, Abbi Jacobson, Keegan-Michael Key, Kumail Nanjiani and Jerry Seinfeld.

10 Sacred KET Monday, Dec. 10 • 10:30/9:30 pm Sacred is a feature-length documentary that explores religious ritual at birth, adolescence, marriage, aging and other key milestones of human life. The film is comprised of contributions from top international filmmakers in order to capture more than 40 diverse stories dispersed across the globe. Sweeping in its global reach, yet intensely intimate, the film is a tour de force that unifies these disparate scenes into a single work, told without narration, without experts and, for long stretches, without words at all.

21 Craft in America KET Friday, Dec. 21 • 9/8 pm & 10/9 pm KET2 Sunday, Dec. 23 • 8/7 pm & 9/8 pm The 10th season of this series explores the vitality, history and significance of the craft movement in the United States and its impact on our nation’s rich cultural heritage. The first episode explores craft practices definitively Californian, from Native Americans continuing ancient traditions to contemporary artists expressing new iterations of the art of the handmade. The second episode features artists, curators and collectors who envision limitless possibilities of craft and imagine new methods of achieving that vision.

22 Castles in the Sky KET Saturday, Dec. 22 • 9/8 pm KET2 Friday, Dec. 28 • 9/8 pm Eddie Izzard stars in this funny and inspiring factual drama about the pioneering work on radar by a little-known team of scientists in the run-up to World War II. On February 26, 1935, Robert Watson-Watt demonstrated for the first time that aircraft could be detected by bouncing radio waves off them. By the time the war began in 1939, radar stations were dotted along the British coast, tracking aircraft at distances of 100 miles away. Watson-Watt and his team of scientists worked tirelessly to see their invention taken seriously, including battles for funding and political wrangling, before getting a final taste of victory.

26 Nova: Apollo’s Daring Mission KET Wednesday, Dec. 26 • 9/8 pm KET2 Sunday, Dec. 30 • 7/6 pm Apollo astronauts and engineers tell the inside story of Apollo 8, the first manned mission to the moon. The U.S. space program suffered a bitter setback when Apollo 1 ended in a deadly fire during a pre-launch runthrough. In disarray and threatened by the prospect of a Soviet Union victory in the space race, NASA decided upon a radical and risky change of plan: turn Apollo 8 from an earth-orbit mission into a daring sprint to the moon while relying on untried new technologies.

New ‘Doc Martin’ season: Join fellow fans for a free sneak-peek!

The life and career of Kentucky’s most acclaimed writer

In October, Rosanna Warren, poet, professor and daughter of Robert Penn Warren, joined KET for the premiere of the KET documentary Robert Penn Warren: A Vision, on the campus of Western Kentucky University. Rosanna, along with producer Tom Thurman, answered questions during a Q&A after the film. Premiere screenings were also held in Lexington and Louisville. Watch the film at KET.org/video.

Head’s up, Doc Martin fans, the wait is almost over: season eight of Doc Martin premieres Thursday, Jan. 10 on KET. Join fellow fans this month for free screenings of the season premiere in Lexington and Louisville.

Season eight will find Martin and Louisa, after having had therapy to save their marriage last season, facing up to the challenge of living happily together as a family. Elsewhere, PC Joe Penhale is looking forward to married life with Martin’s nanny, Janice, and Bert Large is struggling to make his whisky business successful. And Martin’s receptionist, Morwenna, gets some devastating news when her parents arrive in Portwenn unexpectedly.

• Sunday, Dec. 2 at the Kentucky Center for the Arts, Louisville, beginning at 3 p.m.

• Tuesday, Dec. 11 at the Kentucky Theatre, Lexington, beginning at 7 p.m.

12 PBS stations converge at KET to brainstorm adult education resources

Calling all young authors for 2019 Young Writers Contest

In October, KET’s Education staff welcomed representatives from 12 PBS stations, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and the National Educational Telecommunications Association to brainstorm the ongoing development of Workplace Essential Skills Online series, KET’s training resource for job readiness.

Students in kindergarten through 12th grade may want to spend some time during the holidays working on their writing — KET’s annual Young Writer’s Contest launches on January 2!

Students in kindergarten through third grade can submit illustrated stories; fourth and fifth graders may submit short stories; and sixth through eighth graders may submit poetry. Winners are selected at each grade level.

And new this year: students in ninth through 12th grade may submit poetry. Overall high school winners will be selected.

The contest opens January 2 and runs through April 15. Rules and past winners can be found at KET.org/writerscontest.

Workplace Essential Skills Online provides effective online training for job readiness, particularly math and language arts skills, and its lessons are contextualized within employment sectors using real workplace examples. Job search, résumé prep, professional communication and other job success strategies are addressed, as well as critical thinking, problem solving, estimating, following directions within specific workplace environments and more.

This series, which is being created with funding from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, is part of KET’s larger initiative to address Kentucky’s workforce issues by providing resources that teach job, academic and life skills. In partnership with the Kentucky Department of Workforce Investment, KET is also developing In Demand, a new video series intended for young adults entering the workforce that focuses on Kentucky’s highdemand job sectors and careers.
