Problems ‘Great Polar Bear Feast’ examines climate change

O

ne of the largest land carnivores in the world, polar bears sit at the top of the food chain in the biologically rich Arctic.

The Great Polar Bear Feast tells the story of Southern Beaufort Sea polar bears as they face the challenges of the Arctic summer, the time of year when the sea ice — on which they depend for hunting — melts at an increasingly rapid pace.

Each summer, an increasing number of polar bears are converging at Kaktovik, a tiny Alaskan town on the shores of the Southern Beaufort Sea, to feast on the remains of whales left on a nearby beach by the Inupiat tribe.

This spectacle is captured in the special, which also documents the immense struggle that polar bears face in the wild and how climate change has influenced their relationship with the local villagers.

Accompany the U.S. Geological Survey lead polar bear scientist, Dr. Todd Atwood, as he and his team fit a dozen female bears with satellitetracking collars to gather data on them over several months.

Using this information, the program follows two female bears and their cubs as the ice begins to melt. One mother, with two cubs, travels south to Kaktovik and is able to partake in the feast of whale blubber. The other, with a single cub, stays put and then must swim several hundred miles to the north to reach the nearest ice.

Dancing on the Edge KET Begins Sunday, June 26 • 8/7 pm KET2 Begins Tuesday, June 28 • 9/8 pm This eight-part period drama tells the story of the rise of the Louis Lester Band – a black jazz band in London. Led by Lester, played by BAFTA Award-winner Chiwetel Ejiofor, the band is made up of British citizens and American and Caribbean musicians on work visas trying to crack the dance halls and radio playlists. The cast also includes John Goodman, Jacqueline Bisset, Matthew Goode, and Joanna Vanderham.

As the band continues to prevail, despite the racism and classism they encounter, Louis finds himself entangled in a series of unfortunate events.

He becomes a suspect in a murder case, putting him on the run and possibly leading to the band’s demise.

Kentucky women writers discuss black experience in the South

T

wo incidents involving race prompted a recent forum with Kentucky writers Nikky Finney, Crystal Wilkinson, and Bianca Lynne Spriggs discussing the experience of black women in the South.

In July 2015, Sandra Bland, a 28-year-old black woman, was found dead in her jail cell after being arrested following an altercation with a Texas state trooper. Police called it suicide, but protesters around the country charged that it was a case of racially charged violence. Less than a year later, a 21-year-old black woman — a student at the University of Louisville — was verbally and physically assaulted by members of the crowd-turned-mob at a Donald Trump rally.

The three African-America women writers and scholars, who currently live in the South and use their work to engage these issues, spearheaded the discussion at Lexington’s Carnegie Center. The writers present their perspective on the challenges of black women in the South, a region they argue has historically marginalized or disregarded the voices and experiences of black women.

‘Take the River’ explores Ohio River heritage With beautiful river scenery, compelling and sometimes humorous river stories, and a rich historic narrative, Take the River delivers a nostalgic look at events and people that have shaped the Ohio River Valley. It premieres Sunday, June 12 at 3/2 pm on KET. Focusing on historic communities in southeastern Indiana, the documentary presents a microcosm of the river heritage of people up and down the Ohio River. You’ll ride along with Lexington’s Confederate Gen. John Hunt Morgan as he leads his men on a Civil War raid in Indiana and hear the words of a pioneer boy from Bardstown, captured and raised by Indians.

The program also features Kentucky statesman Henry Clay at a winetasting at Indiana’s Swiss Colony and encompasses more Ohio River history, including the Underground Railroad, steamboats, and the 1937 Flood. It also airs Monday, June 13 at 10/9 pm on KET2.

Nazi Mega Weapons KET Begins Wednesday, May 11 • 10/9 pm KET2 Begins Thursday, May 12 • 9/8 pm Learn the engineering secrets of three iconic mega structures, the stories of the evil geniuses that designed them, and how these structures sparked a technological revolution that changed warfare forever.

The first program, “Blitzkrieg,” recounts how, in the first years of WWII, Germany crushed its enemies in a series of offensives coined “Lightning War.” Stuka bombers blast a path though enemy lines, then Panzer divisions cut through defenses. Together they were unstoppable.

D-Day 360 KET2 Thursday, June 2 • 9/8 pm D-Day was a logistical effort on a scale never seen before or since. On the day itself, 3,000 planes dropped 23,000 airborne troops behind German lines, and 7,000 ships delivered around 20,000 military vehicles and 130,000 soldiers onto the beaches.

Through LiDAR technology, this program re-creates the landscapes and switches between the macro and the micro — pulling back for the big picture and zooming in to a close-up of a single soldier on the battlefield.

SHORT TAKES Today’s KET: Recognizing classroom innovation

Kentucky teachers named 2016 PBS LearningMedia Digital Innovators

I recently had the pleasure of attending the Northern Kentucky Education Council’s annual Excellence in Education celebration, in order to present the first-ever KET Innovative Teacher Award. This award recognizes an educator who uses KET digital resources to foster student success.

We were proud to have that honor go to Ms. Regina Egbers, a seventh grade science teacher at Gray Middle School in Union. She epitomizes what it means to lead a 21st century classroom, where robust digital content can support both student learning and teacher collaboration.

Thanking our educators is something we as a community cannot do often enough. This particular award was an opportunity for KET to say thank-you to Ms. Egbers — and the many teachers like her — who make digital learning an integral part of their classrooms.

Engaging students through digital learning tools is essential in today’s high-tech world. PBS LearningMedia and all of the resources that fall under KET EncycloMedia aim to assist educators in delivering an educational experience that is both compelling and curriculum appropriate. From short videos to interactive games and lessons, digital learning can be a valuable part of the overall learning environment — all with the goal of ensuring student achievement.

Congratulations again to Ms. Egbers and to all of her students who are sure to find success through her commitment to innovation.

A total of 18 Kentucky teachers have been named to the 2016 PBS LearningMedia Digital Innovators program, which honors tech-savvy K-12 educators from across the country.

The teachers, who serve as leaders in the use of educational technology and incorporation of digital media into their classrooms, were selected based how they are creatively using digital technology.

Kentucky’s 2016 PBS LearningMedia Lead Digital Innovator is James Wampler of Shelby County High School, Shelbyville.

“Students need exposure to proper utilization of technology to connect them in relevant, engaging and information-rich ways to the real world that they live in,” said Wampler, who teaches eighth grade science.

Wampler will attend the PBS LearningMedia Digital Summit, meeting other innovators. “I’m really looking forward to meeting representatives from other states to see how they are using technology as a tool for student engagement and growth.”

Additionally, 17 Kentucky educators were named Local PBS LearningMedia Digital Innovators.

The teachers will receive year-long professional development opportunities, a free PBS TeacherLine course, and more. Kentucky’s PBS LearningMedia Digital Innovators will also receive ongoing support in their communities from KET.
