Since Anna Mae Vaughn first laid down her proposals for a new type of Medical College, geared to those planning to make the Medical Profession their careers, this has been the goal. Campus ministries, a church related stu­ dent support group, is an outreach program to nurture our spiritual growth through ac­ tivities and worships.

Jill Conrad, campus ministry director, feels that campus ministries is important because “We make time for studies and friends.

Campus ministries sponsors two spe­ cial weeks, one in the fall and one in the winter where spirituality is emphasized.

The fall sessions, held in the campus church, feature a guest speaker. The winter sessions are expressions of spiri­ tuality featuring stu­ dents, faculty and staff. Also one week in January is set aside as Human Rights week to recognize our cultural diversity and to affirm our Godgiven rights as individuals.

The Pulse is a school newspa­ per designed to keep students in­ formed about KCMA activities, organizations, and facilities. Also included are human interest sto­ ries, the “Chaplain's Comer,” and articles profiling both members of the staff and faculty as well as mem­ bers of the student body. Contribu­ tors to the Pulse encompasses fac­ ulty, staff, students and the KMC C om m unications D epartm ent.

Presently, the Pulse is published seven times throughout the Fall and Winter semester. During the academic year of 1993-94, its first year of publication, the Pulse has

tudent Nursing Association offers social activities SNA is an organization open to all nursing students designed to reduce the stress of studies through pizza parties, guest speak­ ers, picnics, and other social func­ tions. Fund raisers are held each year with proceeds going to schol­ arships for SNA members.

The most popular aspect of the organization is the "Buddy

System." Each freshman is as­ signed a Senior Buddy they can call for help with data sheets, care plans, pharmacology or any other dilemma they may encounter.

The lasting friendships de­ veloped through SNA helped guide and support nursing students through the fast-paced two year program at Kettering College.

After two or more years of hard work, a select group of individuals made it to the end.

After endless hours of study­ ing, hundreds of quizzes and tests, and surviving countless clinicals, many reached their final goal. Sara Jamison, Res­ piratory Care, related, "The first semsterout of high school was not what I thought it would be. I didn't study as well as I could have and I came very close to permanently lighten­ ing' my load."

During their time together, relationships and friendships were formed, producing memories of good times to­

gether. These bonds were expecially strengthened during tough times, such as studying together for the big test, sup­ porting each other during clinicals, or just being there to help reduce the stress with en­ couragement or humor.

While each had their own reason for choosing KCMA, the high level of education and the atmosphere of Christian caring was something everyone had the opportunity from which to ben­ efit. KCMA offers education built on excellence that will touch hundreds of lives through its graduates, wherever they may go.

After making it through the thick and thin, gradu­ ates had plenty of memo­ ries to recount from their time together. Through class times, clinicals, and social activities, there was ample opportunity to make new acquaintances.

Most notable events were usually those that were a first - such as the memory of a first clinical, the first week of final exams and other events as well. Ev­ eryone was able to gain experience and memories to carry with them forever.

BUILDING BLOCKS TOWARDS SUCCESS

After filling out stacks of paperwork, attending hours of terrifyng orientations, a large group of first-year students were ready to give their courses a shot, Classes like Anatomy and Physiology, Pharma­ cology, AC/DC Circuits, Nutation and Oxygen Therapy faced stu­ dents on their first day. First-year nursing student Roberta O'Bryant remarked, "I felt apprehensive at first, but everyone was so helpful.

However, it will still take a lot of work, and more work, and more work...."

Getting used to college life was an adjustment for most students.

Learning the different teaching and grading styles of their teachers and how to study for different classes proved to be a challenge. After a few weeks o f school, students discovered whether or not they liked the program they were enrolled in. Heather Maddox, first-year Nursing student, commented, ”1 like it so much already because I am able to work with people and really help them." Choosing a mcdical profession has definite rewards which lead to a great sense of job satisfaction.

Once the butterflies settled after the first week and students got into the routine, most everyone was able to cope with the stress of tests, h om ew ork, and clinicals- the essen­ tial building blocks towards success, Students take advantage of the nice weather on a Friday afternoon after classes.

Education is never a free ride. Many students work long hours in order to get the necessary cash to pay for the expenses o f college. If it isn’t 500 dollars for books, it's cash lor a uniform, stethoscopes, expensive immunizttons. gas fo r the car, and important "can't live without" food items (such as found in the vending machines) which seem to suck up any savings that were possibly left over from paying tuition. : Students get work anywhere they can in order to make ends meet.

First-year Nursing student Jennifer Davisson works two jobs: one in the Bookstore and the other as a receptionist in the Physician Assistant’s office. "It's great because I can learn while working in the office," she commented.

Doing homework, getting good grades and still holding down a job is a challenge for most. Many are stuck between a ’’rock and a hard place" being forced to work in order to attend KCMA. Jessica Duncan, en­ rolled in General Education relates, ”1 wouldn't be able to work if 1 was taking the nursing program in two years."

One way or another, most students make it through. They may have bills to pay off in the end, but they have managed to reach the final goal.

Have you ever had one class that you absolutely dreaded? The one you always found some excuse to walk slow to, the one you always tried to find some reason to leave in the middle of a lecture?

Low grades, writer’s cramp from taking pages of notes, stay ing up all hours o f the night studying, and seemingly impossible tests are some of the many things that distinguish the easier classes from the "toughies". By working together, students are able to do their best and develop new friendships in the process.

Juice Sim, Pre-professional, feels that Chemistry is her hardest class. She says, "The formulas are complex and seem to make no sense with so many ideas anil concepts that are very detailed!"

Several students claim they have found the cure. By working out in The Fitness Center on a regular basis, they have experienced some relief. First-year Pre-professional Mike Powell comments, "It makes me feel better by clearing my mind for schooland making me feel more alive and healthy."

Students have a wide variety of equipment tochoose from in The Fitness Center. There are many exercise machines, bikes, tennis rackets and other sporting goods that may be checked out. Firstyear Nursing student Mike Wright takes advantage of the many possi­ bilities. He states, "The Fitness Center is nice for its size. I can get done what I need to do quickly.”

He also adds, "I enjoy the benefits of working out; I sleep better, eat better, feci better, and look better! ” Exercising may not be the per­ fect answer for everyone, but it's one way that some students keep their sanity.

Registration

New Beginnings he validation sticker... you know, the little orange sticker all KCMA stu­ dents were frantic over the first few days of school. The worth of a new car to a teenager is about the value of this little piece of sticky material on the back of our ID cards. This sticker indicated the finalization of the long awaited registration pro­ cess.

Many KCMA students walked around the first week of school like puppies trying to find their masters, while others glowed with excitement from seeing old friends and meeting new room­ mates. Daphne Paulino, first year nursing student stated, “Once I got to Kettering, I felt lonely, lost, scared and bored. The only good thing was looking forward to rooming with my best friend, Julee Sim.” On the other hand, Beth Burt, a Special Procedures student, felt that registration was a waste of time. She stated, “I didn’t need a director to show me around the campus, all I needed was a map!”

To determine the worth of the registration process, one must experience the good and the bad, the anxiety and the stress, and the reward of receiving the letter of acceptance in the mail. The process was actually much easier than anticipated.

It enabled students to begin the new school year as smoothly as possible.

Another outstanding gen­ eral assembly that drew local TV coverage featured Paraolympic Gold Medalist, Doug Heir. He told his inspir­ ing story of determination to students and faculty. When he was 18, he broke his neck in a rescue attempt while serv­

ing as a lifeguard. Refusing to give up, he became an attorney, author, and a win­ ner o f 175 Gold Medals in Paraolympic competition.

He was also featured on the front o f “Wheaties” boxes for his athletic abilities. He is a well-known lecturer with his humorous yet in­ spiring talks on motivation.

After his speech, many stu­ dents stayed afterwards to receive his autograph.

General assemblies were a time that students were able to come closer together during serious and humor­ ous times.

Soup-in ontinuing a long-standing tradi­ tion at KCMA, four faculty mem­ bers opened their homes to stu­ dents for the annual “soup-in.”

Loosely defined, a “soup-in” may be classified as a once-a-year chance tocrash at a faculty pad and “eat them out of house and home.” Stan and Edith Applegate (BMET/Biology), Margaret Rodenburg (General Education), and Jill Evans (English) hosted about one hundred guests for the annual event. The soup-in is a relaxed gath­ ering for informal conversation, getting to know faculty in their “natural habitat,” and even music and singing.

Jean Smith stated, “I enjoyed getting to know the Applegate's better and socializing on a full stomach with everyone.” Chris Wantz com­ mented, “The food was delicious and the Evans were very friendly!” Because students enjoyed the relaxing evening with faculty, the tradition will surely continue for years to come.

hile listening to the sounds o f the Irish group "Proclaimers" over the gym PA system, Student Association officers, vol­ unteers, and RA's dili­ gently worked late into the night in order to transform the gym and lobby into a replica of the North Pole.

On the evening o f the big event, guests were greeted at the lobby doors with the sounds o f Santa’s workshop. Past the castle-like "brick" archways, murals were painted and put on the walls that depicted an elfin assembly line with sound effects and steam generating from the creation.

The meal was held in the gym, which was decorated with holiday spirit. Chirstmas lights in icicle shapes, provided a warm atmosphere for dining and socializing.

After the meal, guests were invited to the lobby again for the night's program of mu­ sic and skits. The faculty/staff displayed good humor by al­ lowing themselves to become Santa's "reindeer." Vocals and instrumental numbers on the saxophone, trumpet, and flute were also provided. But the evening wasn't complete (es­ pecially for the children) until the long awaited arrival of Santa and Mrs. Claus. Pic­ tures were taken with Santa

and presents supplied through SA funds were handed out to the children. Anthony Gore remarked later, "The program provided a feeling of warmth and friendship enforced by ev­ eryone being together."

The next day, students who weren't able to attend the party were still able to enjoy the decorations and punch with cookies in the lobby. When Amy Hamer walked in the door for school the next day, she recalled, "I was shocked - I didn't think it would be that elaborate!"

Thanks to the efforts of S A officers, the Christmas sea­ son started off right.

he College hosted the first International Food Fair on campus which was sponsored by Campus Ministries at the conclu­ sion to Human Rights week.

Students and com m unity m em bers each prepared ethnic dishes for students, faculty and staff representing their home countries. The countries represented included Africa, Canada, China, Greece, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Philippines, Scandanavia, Slavic countries, and the United States.

It was evident that every­ one enjoyed themselves and according to Anita Brown, "The food was excellent."

Jeanne Smith commented, "I thought it was neat because there was food I’d never tasted before." Those who prepared and served the food were dressed in their native costumes which added another dimen­ sion to the already unique ex­ perience. It was a lot of work

Each year, the college invites various health care institutions to recruit prospective gradu­ ates. Representatives come from as far away as Florida, Washington D.C., and Kentucky to attend the event. This year, however, job availability was low due to the hiring freeze many health care agencies were experiencing.

Nancy McKee, RN and Director of Nursing at Lincoln Park Manor, viewed this issue from a different perspective. She stated, "I see long term health care requiring higher skilled people as the wave of the future - regardless of what takes place with the national health care program."

Even though some institutions in attendance were unable to offer jobs, they still offered advice. "I wish there were more people represented, but the ones who were here were very helpful," commented Wendy Selman, a Radiology senior. Nursing student Carole Incze also stated, "I found it really helpful last year and again this year, although I haven’t found a job yet!"

By offering ample opportunities for job placement, students received the best chance to secure their futures.

Stretching the pot of soup We want to share our love with them

hat is a soup kitchen? This is an activity that Campus ministries has organized to in­ troduce students to com m unity out­ reach. Located in downtown Dayton at the St. Vincent Hotel, the “kitchen” is oper­ ated by volunteers from the Dayton area. St. Vincent not only provides food, it is also a shelter for the homeless. Food is supplied by groups who want to participate in the program, Kroger's, Meijer's, etc.

It takes a fraction of our time to share our love with others. We want to show them that we care about their welfare. The power of God's love is overwhelming. We experience the blessing and want to share our love with them. “This event makes us feel more humble toward others,” commented one of the students. At times, we take advantage of life. We have a nice supportive family, stable jobs, great home/jobs, and a good pet.

Staying in shape using

Sports here were many activities for stu­ dents at KCMA. From volleyball to basketball, and summer soft­ ball, students formed teams and competed against each other to relieve stress from their full days of class lectures and tests. Ac­ cording to Respiratory Therapy instructor Bob Lamme, “Intramural basketball gives me the opportunity to interact with students in a more informal environment, forming friendships with those students I might not otherwise have met.”

Students who did not wish to engage in organized sports could participate in other activi­ ties such as tennis, ping pong, and exercising in KCMA's fitness room. "Since the weather is so cold outside during the winter, it's nice to have a place inside to exercise," commented Shawn Williams.

Not only was the gym accessible for college students, it was also available for hospital em­ ployees. Many enjoyed playing intramural sports such as basketball and volleybell with the college students. Others took advantage of exercise classes and the weight room. Joseph Fischkelta remarked, "I like the weight room - it's up-to-date as far as equipment goes. It's nice to know the hospital cares about the fitness of the employees."

Those who took advantage of the facilities in the gym were able to create new friendships as they worked together as part of a team. Fitness has its many advantages - all of which helped students to excel to their best potential.

If you’re graduating from KCMA with a nursing or respiratory care degree, take the next step toward success and earn a Bachelor of Science degree at Columbia Union College.

While you’re completing your four-year degree in nursing you can work at area hospitals like Washington Adventist Hospital, which is right across our campus. And as a nursing major you’ll get great experience in the classroom as well. For the last three years in a row, 100 percent of our nursing majors passed the state board examination.

If you’re a respiratory care major and have already acquired your certification, you can earn more than $15 an hour working at area hospitals or prestigious research facilities

like the National Institutes of Health. One-hundred percent of CUC’s most recent respiratory care graduates passed the national board exams and are working as respiratory therapists or continuing their education at CUC or graduate school.

CUC students serve others when they’re not on the job, too.

Recently, CUC respiratory care majors visited a local elementary school to teach kids about good lung care, and nursing majors regularly participate in several campus ministries programs.
