The theme of the yearbook is, "On The Edge". This theme was not just plucked out of the air but took some thinking. It was finally chosen for many reasons. Most people that have spent any time on the campus and got to know and understand what KCMA is all about, probably couldn't say that Kettering was not "on the Edge." This year the school: -Celebrated it's 25 th year of educa tional excellence while maintaing 2 year programs at the lowest price of any other Adventist college, -arranged guest speakers like Joel

Opening

It was a beautiful August morning when KCMA opened its doors for the 25th year to new students and pending graduates. The excitement and an ticipation was felt by mo st, and for the rest, registra tion was just another for mality. The process began with residence hall registration.

swered. For some, it was a match made in heaven, whereas for others, the word, compromise, soon became a permanent word in their vocabulary. The next day, all the students gathered in the gymnasium for a devo tion, faculty introduc tions, and guided tour. Lunch was then served,

New Beginnings Students and their fami lies bombarded the dor m itory w ith pick-up trucks and shopping carts. One by one, each room was filled, and with this change came the inevi table question, "Who is my roommate?" The question was soon an-

and departmental meet ings were held during the afternoon. The second day of ori entation was the same as day one. That night, there was a 25th Anniversary picnic and concert, which marked the end of '92 Fall Registration and the be ginning of a new school year.

| Technology Radiologic technologists are dedicated to support ing physicians and other medical professionals in efforts to conserve life and prevent disease. They are involved in imaging body structures and organs, uti lizing a variety of proce dures and sophisticated equipment. Radiology is approxim ately 22-24 months in length. It pro vides a combination of di dactic theory and clinical application that prepares the student to meet the chal lenges of advancing tech nology and methods. The program may be entered two times a year. Track I begins in the fall semester,

and Track II in the summer semester. Both tracks have identical curriculum re quirem ents; how ever, some courses are in a dif ferent sequence. The Ra diology Program is com petency based. It is pos sible to complete all clini cal requirements in less than 24 months and, if cir cumstances warrant, the student may be granted longer than 24 months to complete the clinical re quirements. The Radiol ogy Program also has an Advanced Placement Pro gram. A minimum of 20 hours of credit in residence at the college is required in addition to the proficiency tests. &Pte-Professional Many of KCMA's students enroll in the division of Gen eral Education and begin tak ing the required courses for the professional programs. This has many advantages to the student It allows for a reduced class load, an op portunity to prove his/her ability to master college courses as well as allowing additional time to explore and make career choices. The division ofGeneral Edu cation consists of the de partment of Science and Humanities. This course provides a broad liberal arts background and a founda tion on which a student can build either a technical or academic program leading to further education

When students graduate from the pre-professional program, they are just beginning their education in pursuit of career goals. They have 2-6 more years of intense classwork at another college, university, or professional school after leaving KCMA. The pro gram is a rigorous curriculum in the humanities and the bio logical, physical, and social sciences. Admission to the professional schools is highly competitive so the students need to maintain high grades. Three different tracks are of fered. Tracklisforpre-med, pre-dent, pre-pharm. Trackll is pre-physical therapy and sports medicine. Track III is health related or liberal arts.

The first year of the pro gram is heavily didactic with some patient-contact in the first semester. Dur ing the second semester, students have a two day/ week rotation in an office practice setting. The sec ond year PA student com pletes a series of rotations in a variety of clinical set tings four day/week; their one day on campus is de voted to classes and labo ratory experiences. The final 10-week summer term is spent in a full-time clinical clerkship with a primary care physician.

Students take suturing and casting, emergency medi cine, pediatrics, OB/GYN, mental health, cardiac life support, pharmacology, and geriatrics. Physician Assistant is one of the most popular program s at KCMA. It is also the only program that has admis sion requirements. A 1000 hours documented clinical experiences is a must. Also, 25 college credits in general courses is required. Physician Assistant is quickly becoming popular throughout the U.S.

PA students have a guest speaker while instructors are out of town. Students listen and take notes during lecture.

Care

R espiratory Care has evolved into a dynamic, highly technical profession that has maintained its em phasis on quality patient care. Therapists now use micro-processor controlled ventilator, pulse oximeters, and inter-arterial blood gas electrodes to monitor slight changes in the patient'scondition while supporting the vital function of respira tion. Respiratory care pro fessionals provide care to patients of all ages in acute care hospital, rehabilitation centers, skilled nursing fa cilities, and patients' homes. Their areas of ex pertise have expanded to include hemodynamic as sessment and monitoring, advanced pulmonary diagnostic procedures, and

implementation of thera pist driven protocols for patient management The challenges facing today's respiratory care practitio ners include keeping pace with the latest develop ments in critical care, pul monary medicine, and con tinuing care of the patient with chronic lung disease. Therapists are becoming more involved in patient education, health promo tion, and smoking cessa tion programs. As the na tion addresses the many issues in health care, respi ratory therapists are affirm ing their position as essen tial members of the health care team by demonstrat ing excellence in patient care. Diagnostic Medical Sonog raphy is a rapidly growing field of medical imaging. Also known as ultrasound, sonography can provide ana tomical and physiological in formation about soft tissue structures within the body. Images are produced by send ing high frequency sound waves into the body through a transducer. These sound waves or echoes travel through the body sending re turn echoes back to the ultra sound machine as they strike tissue interfaces along their path. As the sonographer scans, the image is constantly updated on the viewing screen enabling the technologist to view anatomy and blood flow as it occurs. There are many different uses for diagnostic ultrasound in the medical field. It can aid in evaluating

heart anatomy and the func tion of cardiac valves. A well trained sonographer can aid in providing information to the physician concerning the hemodynamics of arteries which if become occluded can lead to a stroke. Sonog raphy is also used in diagnos ing pathology of abdominal and pelvic structures as well as allowing for a thorough examination of fetal anatomy without exposure to ionizing radiation. During the last decade, sonography has proven to be a valuable diag nostic tool for the physician. The procedures are gener ally painless and non-evasive which together with a comparative low cost has made ultrasound procedures high on the list of patient acceptance.
