GENERAL EDUCATION The g e n e ra l ed c o u rs e s serve as stepping stones for students who intend to enter a program at KCMA or plan to co ntin u e th e ir education at other colleges. These courses include the sciences, humani­ ties, computer and phys. ed.

The courses are designed to meet two distinct needs: to provide a liberal arts back­ ground on which to build tech­ nical information present in the curricular, and to provide the academic foundation for tho se planning to continue their studies in liberal arts.

Who are all these BMET peo­ ple??

A BMET is an individual who has knowledge of the theory of operation, the underlying physio­ logical principles, and the safe, practical, clinical application of biomedical equipment. Daily activ­

ities of BMET life deal with an ex­ te n s iv e v a rie ty o f b io m e d ic a l equipment systems that typically include: inspection, safety testing, calibration, installation, preventive maintenance, m odification, and repair.

Nursing So you have a full time job, are taking 18 credits, and have abso­ lutely no social life, except for your family (which needs at least an hour of personal tender loving care PER DAY), and you have at least 30 trillion enemas to give to­ day. Where do nursing students find the time? But seriously, the

nursing program is not to be taken lightly. There are options for those who wish to pursue a career in nursing: day and evening classes are available. And of course there plenty of hands on experience - as those in a clinical rotation know.

If you think this comfortable, then you try it!

Physician Assistants The Physician Assistant pro­ gram prepares students for roles on the health care team in family practice, em ergency medicine, surgery, and many other settings.

The courses are demanding, the clinical rotations long and exhaus­ ting, but P. A. students welcome the challenges, as well as the de­ gree of responsibility entrusted to them. They “even” have time for fun at times!!!!!

Pre-Professional The P re-P rofessional program is designed for p e o p le in te re s te d in a health re-lated career that requires a baccalaureate, graduate, or professional degree as the entry level.

Because the program en­ compasses the beginning c o u rs e w o rk fo r m any professions, three differ­ ent options are offered.

Track I is for students pur­ suing professions such as medicine, that require a

baccalaureate degree be­ fore admission to medical school. Track II is for stu­ dents interested in Physi­ cal Therapy or other car­ eers that require two years of college prerequi­ sites before admission to the professional school.

Track III represents the first two years of study for a baccalaureate degree in a health related or liberal arts discipline.

IMAGING SCIENCES Radiology is one of the most important diagnostic tools used in medicine to­ day. It is the branch of medicine concerned with radioactive substances, including x-rays. Radia­ tion can’t be felt or seen, but because of its power, it is used for diagnostic and theraputic purposes.

Information may be ac­ quired in photographic plates to prevent, diag­ nose, and treat disease.

Ultrasound is a profes­ sion where sound waves are used to produce an

image of an organ or tis­ sue. Ultrasound uses a high frequency waves to outline the shape of or­ gans and tissues. These waves are used in the ar­ eas of Abd./O.B. Gyn and Cardiovascular.

Respiratory Therapy Breathing is a relatively im­ portant issue to almost every­ one (at least those who make it a habit). KCMA makes it a point to vigorously train stu­ dents who have the desire to learn more on this important matter so that they in return will be able to teach those who have yet to grasp the art of breathing. With many a “ No, no” and an “ Inhale before Ex­ hale” fro m th e ir b re a th in g guru, people everywhere are gasping with further regularity and consistency.

All kidding aside, therapists work with the diagnosis, treat­ ment, and prevention of car­ diopulmonary problems in all areas of medical care.

One drop of this will send you higher than a kite.

Mr. Cowling has often been called Mr. KCMA, because he started organizing the registrar’s office and processing applications long before the doors of the college opened in 1967. At that time he was commuting from Mt. Vernon Academy, where he was principal. During the years his hair has changed from bright red to white, as he served as Director of Admissions, Director of Finance, Registrar Department head of Bookstore, teacher of Business Management, Academic Dean, and Department head at the Medical Center. Somehow, he also found time to become a student and complete our nursing program and worked weekends for several years as an registered nurse.

The philosophy and goals of the college have been shaped and molded under his guidance to make KCMA the kind of school it is today. Under his guidance the Allied Health and Nursing Programs are among the best in the country. We are confident that his influence will continue long after retirement.

OPERATION DESERT STORM KCMA, like the rest of the country, felt the ef足 fects of Operation Desert Storm. We said farewell to students leaving to serve in the Middle East, held daily prayer and support sessions, and tried not to worry too much about those family and friends who were part of the American forces so far away from home. And like so many others, we wore our orange ribbons proudly.

CANOE TRIP The annual canoe trip turned out to be a splashing success. People who planned to get wet were sure to bring towels, while others who did not know Steve Arentz that well . . . well, forgot theirs. It was relaxing floating down a peaceful river, enjoying the gently falling leaves and warm sunshine. Of course, that was the opinion of those who were able to avoid tip­ ping over. The trip ended with a hot dog roast and vespers which brought people closer together — if only to shake off the water and shivers.

CAMPUS MINISTRIES Whether singing, picnick­ ing, playing Bible Pictionary, re le a s in g frie n d -s h ip b a l­ loons, talking with friends, or o ffe rin g a h e a rt-fe lt “ I love you,” we could find it this year with the help of the Campus Ministries staff. HALLOWEEN PARTY The moon was full and yellow, and the air was cool and clear.

A perfect evening for a riverboat cruise. A perfect evening for gorillas, witches, and pi­ rates to carve pumpkins and bob for apples. Virgil Harrison won first prize for his wizard costume and Cheryl Virginac showed everyone how to RE­ ALLY bob for apples. The rest of us spent our time carving pumpkins and watching a ma­ gician remove Curt Dolinsky’s watch from Curt’s wrist with­ out being noticed. Was any­ thing else missing? The com­ pany of friends was delightful and the view from the boat just beautiful — for this special Halloween celebration.

The KCM A annual ski trip was a huge success! The slopes were great and the wfeather perfect.

What more could we ask for? Our group of 61 students, teachers, hospital employees, and friends headed for Steamboat Colorado for 4 days of snow, fun, and very

little sun. So how come so many of us came back tanned? We en­ j o y e d r o u g h i n g it in o u r f ul l y equipped condominiums — ah, the rugged life. The general con­ sensus is that the trip was “AWE­ SOME.”
