PACEMAKER Kettering College of Medical Arts

This academic year, 1988-89, is a landmark year for Kettering College of Medical Arts the year in which the twentieth class of the College graduates, Such a special occasior gives us the opportunity to look back on wha has happened in the past and also to look for ward to where Kettering College may be going. As I look at the more than 2,500 graduates o the College, lam very impressed with the sig nificant influence these graduates have had upon the healthcare institu tions of our city, our state and our nation. Every section of the country has representatives from one of the twenty classes who are serving the health needs of their fellowmen. Of course,7 the local area and Seventh-da^j Adventist healthcare institutions throughout the country have the greates concentration of these graduates and, therefore, have benefitted mos from their services. Yet, I marvel how such a group of professionals relatively small in numbers, can have had such a great impact on ou church and our country. The future of the College is also bright. The all-time high in enrollment thif year, the large number of graduates that this high enrollment promises and the professional competence which is so characteristic of our gradu ates that it has become a hallmark of our College - all these ensure tha Kettering College will continue to be a major factor in providing profession als for the healthcare industry. The impact we have had from these firs twenty classes will double and triple in the next few years. As we note how God has blessed this College in the past, we can be sure of an ever greater future. It has been a pleasure to work with the students, faculty and staff of the College during the 1988/89 school year, and I salute you for the grea efforts that you have made, are making and will continue to make in youi chosen fields. Character Another year has passed, a sense of relief for the graduates and the apprehension of what awaits us all in the coming year. Since this is the year of our 20th graduating class we are honoring the primary founder(s) of this institution who are responsible for making Kettering College of Medical Arts what it is. This college has character and characters! Both of which are important in the function of this institution. This college is based on four main aspects which are: mental, physical, social and spiritual, in an attempt to increase personal development and achievement of potential.

4 Theme

Character

When it comes down to it, what are the memories we have of this year? The last minute cramming for tests? The friendships we've established? The experiences and con足 versations we've shared with our roommates? How many people are going to remember what we become, instead of how far we've come and how much we've changed? Look carefully as you go through this yearbook. Have any of your professors chanqed? Kara L. Self Yearbook Editor

Theme 5

"It is in trifles, and when he is off his guard, that a man best shows his character." A. Schopenhauer

"CHARACTER— N., nature, temperment, disposition, mettle, ca lib e r, tem per, ethos, complexion.

6 Activities

Character Let us not complain against men because of their rudeness, their ingratitude, their injus足 tice, their arrogance, their love of self, their forgetfulness of others. They are so made. Such is their nature. To be annoyed with them is like denouncing a stone for falling, or a fire for burning. JEAN DE LABRUY^RE: Caracteres, XI The highest of charac足 ters is his who is as ready to pardon the moral errors of mankind as if he were every day guilty of them himself; and as cautious of com足 mitting a fault as if he never forgave one. PLINY THE YOUNGER: Letters, VIII, c. 110

A c tiv itie s 7

All that a man does is physiognomical of him. You may see how a man would fight by the way in which he sings; his courage, or want of courage, is visible in the word he utters, in the opinion he has formed, no less than in the stroke he strikes. He is one; and preaches the same self aboad in all these ways. THOMAS CARLYLE: Heroes and Hero-Worship, III, 1840 (Lec足 ture In London, May 12)

One man is made of ag足 ate, another of oak; one of slate, another of clay. The education of the first is polishing; of the sec足 ond, seasoning; of the third, rending; of the fourth moulding. JOHN RUSKIN: The Stones o f Venice, III, 1853

Character Character, even in the most distorted view taken of it by the most angry and prejudiced minds, generally retains something of its outline. No caricaturist ever rep resented Mr. Pitt as a Falstaff, or Mr. Fox as a skeleton; nor did any libeller ever impute par simony to Sheridan, or profusion to Marlbor ough. T.B. MACAULAY: Sir William Temple, 1838 That which we call char acter is a reserved force which acts directly by presence, and without means. It is conceived of as a certain undemonstrable force, a familiar or genius, by whose impulses the man is guided, by whose coun sels he cannot impart. R.W. EMERSON: Char acter, 1841 There is something in the character of every man which cannot be altered: it is the skeleton of his character. Trying to change it is like trying to train sheep to pull a cart. G.C. LICHTENBERG: Reflections, 1799 Sow a thought, and you reap an act; Sow an act, and you reap a habit; Sow a habit, and you reap a character, Sow a character, and you reap a destiny. 18 HISTORY

Something new in higher educa tion began when Kettering College of Medical Arts opened its doors to students on September 18,1967. It offered a two-year degree in Nurs ing and Allied Health and was affiliated with Kettering Hospital Charles F, Kettering’s dream of an educational center “to become involved in pre paring young people for satisfying lives of service here and in other institutions in various parts of the world’* became a reality. The com bined philosophy of Charles Ketter ing and the Seventh-day Adventist Church was to offer a sound, imagina tive. forward-looking education to meet present and future health care needs. “Quality” was the key word One hundred thirty- seven students (the ratio was 9-1 in favor of the females) were registered for classes with 28 full-time and 19 part-time faculty. The students chose to special ize in one. of the two-year educa tional programs offered in five fields; Nursing, Radiology, Respiratory Therapy, Housekeeping Manage ment, and Food Service Manage ment Each curriculum was requited to have fifty percent of its courses In General Education. In the begin ning the tuition was $25 per semes ter hour and room rent was 830 per month. Over the next two years the programs were changed from two years to nineteen months and several new programs were added. In 1969 the first class graduated with sixty six students. In the twenty years since its open ing, KCMA has continued to develop programs in response to health care demands. There are currently nine aims of specialization in Allied Health and Nursing remains the largest program of study. The college has 50 full-time faculty, 15 part-time faculty and 77 adjunct faculty with approximately500 students enrolled, and 2,323 alumni serving in various parts of the world The reputation of the high quality of the graduates of Kettering College has resulted in increased demand for the services of KCMA graduates. Kettering College of Medical Arts has a bright future in health care education. An active evening college was started in 1987 making It poss ible for a student to graduate from Nursing in four years taking only evening classes. In Nursing and Allied Health every program is constantly being updated, and new programs are being considered which are innovative yet academically sound.

Biomedical Electronics Technology BMET (Biomedical Electronics Technology) students prepare to be an important part of the professional health care team. Their responsibility is the large variety of electronic equipment that the rest of the team uses to diagnose and treat the sick. The graduates are prepared to install, maintain, and repair the simplest to the most complex devices used in hospitals and other health care facilities. They ensure that these medical tools are accurately calibrated and safe to use. They are available to the medical staff to assist with in-service training and problem-solving. They are there to make possible the most effective use of very expensive, but indispensible, equipment. Graduates can look forward to an expanding jobmarket where they will find an opportunity to use and increase their hard-won skills.

Clinical Dietetics Technology One of the constants in life is change, and this applies to the profession of dietetics. The role of the Dietetic Tech nician has changed drametically in just the last two years. Factors which have influenced this are the advent of Diagnostically Related Groups (DRGs) and licensure for Dietitians. Dietetic Technicians are spending more time now in a continual assessment of the nutritional status of patients during their hospital stay. The emphasis has shifted towards nutritional counseling of patients on an out-patient basis rather than on an in-patient basis. This actually improves the effectiveness of counseling, as out patients are more well than in-patients, and therefore, usually more able to be receptive to dietary counseling. Licensure for Dietitians became effective in July of 1987 and skyrocketed the need for Dietetic Technicians in ex tended care facilities (ECFs). Prior to licensure, food Service Supervisors in ECFs conducted a significant amout of the nutritional documentation. After licensure, only the Dietitian and Dietetic Technician were qualified to write nutritional assessments, care plans, and progress notes. As a result, the market for Dietetic Technicians grew dramatically. The Dietetic Technician program at KCMA has revised its curriculum to meet the changing roles of the Dietetic Technician. Currently students are receiving more clini cal experiences in ECFs than in times past, more empha sis is placed on the needs of the elderly and the critically ill, and the significance of laboratory values and food/ drug interactions. Students are also devoting more of their Practicum experience to the mangement aspects of dietetics. In essence what this boils down to, is that more is being expected of the Dietetic Technician. Our world is getting more and more technical and sophisticated and the role of the Dietetic Techician is also.

Medical Laboratory Technology Medical laboratory technology is a health profession that applies principles from the basic sciences such as biology and chemistry to the clinical laboratory sciences including hematology, microbiology, immunology, blood banking and chemistry. The medical laboratory technician is a vital member of the health care team who develops data essential to the detection, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of dis足 ease. The program at KCMA fosters excellence not only in technical performance, but also in understanding the processes involved and their importance in laboratory testing. Communication skills are stressed in order that the technician may interact with other health care provid ers to enhance the quality of patient care.

Nursing Lying in a hospital bed of an overcrowded room, sur足 rounded by tubes and wires, you feel physically weak and emotionally drained. As you lie there in helplessness you wonder if the nurse who enters really cares, if she is really giving you care that counts... If you or a loved one are ever in such a position, it will be encouraging to know that the Nursing Program at KCMA aims at teaching wholesome and precise care. It is a two year Associate Degree program designed in the context of a Christian framework. The thoroughness of theoretical content, the quality of clinical experience, and the emphasis on the emotional and spiritual aspects of care all blend to constitute a unique and superior pro足 gram. The Nursing program at KCMA accommodates a vari足 ety of students looking for quality education. For those who desire a less demanding study program, the course can be extended over a three year period. LPN's are offered the opportunity to receive their degree through the Advanced Placement Program. Even those with busy daytime schedules are encouraged to fulfill their dreams through a unique Evening Nursing Program. An added benefit is that courses here pave the way for further advancement in the Nursing field. Without doubt the program is tough and demanding. Yet, when lying in a hospital bed, it is the excellence demanded that brings reassurance to the patient. When all is said and done, the golden moment is seeing evidence of progress in a patient, feeling the warmth of a grateful smile, or feeling the love conveyed in a meaningful touch. Yes, at this moment the struggles of school certainly seem worth it! By Sheela Choppala 2nd Year Nursing Student

Physician Assistant In keeping with the highest standards of educational excel lence, and within the Christian philosophy of Kettering College of Medical Arts, and the medical resources of the greater Dayton medical community, the Physician Assistant Program endeavors to: -Provide a curriculum for mature men and women with previous health care experience that meets the Essentials of an Approved program for the Primary Care Physician Assistant. -Provide an atmosphere and educational experi ence that encourages students to continue a life long process of physical, mental, social, and spiri tual development. -Prepare graduates who are competent in perform ing skills and tasks identified as being part of the PA role, such as history and physical taking, casting, suturing and ECG interpretation, labora tory data collection and analysis, and development and initiation of treatm ent plans. -Prepare graduates to assist in the delivery of primary care services in a variety of clinical set tings, with appropriate supervision. Students in the Physician Assistant Program face a heavy didactic and clinical load. Early in the Program the emphasis is on didactic courses with some clinical experience in the first semester. Throughout the Program, the emphasis gradually shifts away from the didactic towards more clinical time to finally the last semester where students are sent on clinical preceptorships throughout the country. These preceptorships are assiciated with the employment possibilites and are elec tives selected by the student. As rigorous as the Program is, the rewards of the profession are more than worth it. The opportunity to be involved with patients and their total health care in settings from OB/GYN, Emergency Medicine, Surgery, Ambulatory Clinic, and Geriatrics is the ultimate goal of a Physician Assistant. A challenging curriculum and an equally challenging and rewarding profession waits those who have the vision to serve patients as a Physician Assistant.

I

It's been a year of a lot of sweat and hard work. But it has also been a year for some down right good timesl As we look back on events that we've had thoughout the year you can't help but smile!!! The student body and faculty along with their families enjoyed a wonderful afternoon at the Cincinnati Zoo. Everyone had a great time (until the gorilla decided he didn't like so and so's and started flinging mud!!!) One of our autumn events was the fancy Riverboat Cruise which was heaps of fun with a catered dinner, live music and costume, also pumpkin carving contests. As winter arrived and temperatures dropped outside, the students enjoyed some warm friendship at King's Island's Winterfest. This years's Valentine's Banquet was held at LaComedia feturing a Hawaiian Theme. Some of the students were drafted to try shaking their hips with some of the llaniers (and boy, were the rest of us embarassedlll) Other activities of the year included ice skating, roller skating, bowling, a Christmas party and, oh, our favorite - softball games with ice cream feeds!!! As officers we enjoyed being with the student body. Our feelings were best expressed in our "Tribute to the Special People of KCMA". We thank the student body for a great year. Good luck to the new officers. We hope they have as a great a time building memories as we did!!!

Student Nurses Association The Student Nurses Association (SNA) is a professional organization for student nurses. It provides an opportunity for fellowship and professional development. This year our membership was at an all time high of 118 members. SNA also had a newsletter which featured short articles on current nursing issues, helpful hints (the nursing type), practice math questions, and cartoons. SNA also set up a buddy system which was intended to provide support to the first year students. Social events included a pizza party, Christmas Carols, and a senior picnic. Two scholarships of $100 each were awarded--one to Dee Zopp (freshman) and one to Faith Smith (senior). As students graduate they are invited to join the Ohio Nurses Association and continue their professional development. 1ST YEAR

Beaven - Black Society The Beaven - Black Society is the organization of Physician Assistant students at KCMA. Named in honor of the men instrumental in bringing P.A. education to the school, one of the society's major goals is to promote the profession to the public. Health fairs for grade school children, and Head Start preschool physicals are among the year's events. The society is a student chapter of the American Academy of Physician Assistants and the Ohio Academy of P.A.'s. Beaven - Black members this past year traveled to the state conference in Cleveland and the national meeting in Washington, D.C. Welcoming and graduation parties are annual events to bring in new members and say good-bye to the society's alumni. Chris Clifton President

A HOSPITAL WITH A LEGACY OF INSIGHT Charles F. Kettering, Dayton’s legendary inventor, inspired more at Kettering Medical Center than a name. He gave it a philosophy. Kettering Medical Center approaches health care with an optimism based on the belief that there is always a way to do something better, that progress comes from hard work and what you learn along the way. And when you add insight, great strides can be made.

Whether it is science or service, high technology or listening to a patient, Kettering Medical Center is making strides. We have to. Mr. Kettering would insist.
