Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow Objectives stated in KCMA’s first official publication in 1967 are its objec­ tives today, and will continue to be the objectives tomorrow. Kettering College is a Christian institution which holds as a supreme objective the providing of an environment in which teachers and students can discover and know God as He is revealed in Christian teach­ ings, natural observation, and human experience. Four unchanging fun­ damental areas of development, intel­ lectual, spiritual, physical, and social, are integrally interrelated in the ed­ ucation process at Kettering College o f Medical Arts. The Board o f Trus­ tees, administrators, faculty and staff, seek to provide a curriculum, an environment, a social situation, and the appropriate kinds o f people who can provide the appropriate stimuli and support for all students to develop in their own unique and individual ways in these four areas.

With the developm ent o f the co llege as the educational division, the structure o f the Kettering Medical Center em erged out o f the midst o f the vision o f Eugene Kettering. In 1967, the first class was adm itted KC M A was looking to the future with new m ethods and new curricula to provide quality education in health care sciences. A s KC M A continues to look to the future, curricula is being developed with a deep sense o f urgency to provide students an opportunity to grow in an expanding field of health care occupations

18 HISTORY

Something new in higher educa­ tion began when Kettering College o f Medical Arts opened its doors to students on September 18,1967. It offered a two-year degree in Nurs­ ing and Allied Health and was affiliated with Kettering HospitaL Charles F. Kettering’s dream of an educational center‘‘to become involved in pre­ paring young people for satisfying lives o f sernce here and in other institutions in various parts of the world” became a reality. The com­ bined philosophy o f Charles Ketter­ ing and the Seventh-day Adventist Church was to offer a sound, imagina­ tive, forward-looking education to meet present and future health care needs. “ Quality” was the key word.

One hundred thirty-seven students (the ratio was 9-1 in favor o f the females) were registered for classes with 28 full-time and 19 part-time faculty. The students chose to special­ ize in one o f the two-year educa­ tional programs offered in five fields: Nursing, Radiology, Respiratory Therapy, Housekeeping Manage­ ment, and Food Service Manage­ ment Each curriculum was required to have fifty percent o f its courses in General Education. In the begin­ ning the tuition was $25 per semes­ ter hour and room rent was $30 per month. Over the next two years the programs were changed from two years to nineteen months and several new programs were added. In 1969 the first class graduated with sixtysix students.

In the twenty years since its open­ ing, KCMA has continued to develop programs in response to health care demands. There are currently nine areas of specialization in Allied Health and Nursing remains the largest program of study. The college has 50 full-time faculty, 15 part-time faculty and 77 adjunct faculty with approximately500 students enrolled, and 2,323 alumni serving in various parts of the world. The reputation of the high quality o f the graduates of Kettering College has resulted in increased demand for the services of KCMA graduates.

Kettering College o f Medical Arts has a bright future in health care education An active evening college was started in 1987 making it poss­ ible for a student to graduate from Nursing in four years taking only evening classes. In Nursing and Allied Health eveiy program is constantly being updated, and new programs are being considered which are innovative yet academically sound.

Th e 1988 Capping C erem ony took place at the Seventh-day Aventist Church in K et­ tering. Marjorie K. Lahm, Coordinator for Dayton Sch ool o f Practical Nursing addressed the 76 students and the large audience in attendance.

A s the first year nursing students walked down the aisle they carried with them their hopes and dream s for the future. Th ey knelt to receive their cap or epaulettes and rose with new confidence. A s each lam p was lit it rekindled thoughts o f rem arkable p eop le w ho paved the way for today’s nurses. A s the Floren ce N igh tengale Fled ge was recited the students exam ined them selves to see if they could m eet the challenge.

T h e flow o f pride was upon the faces o f the fam ily and friends w h o attended. It is this pride that will fortify the students to reach their goal and to excel at it.

PHYSICIAN ASSISTANT T h e Physician Assistant is a skilled person qualified by academ ic and practical training to provide patient services under the supervision and direction o f a licensed physician.

Patient services include perform ing patient histories and evaluations for the physician’s review. T h e P.A. student has a pre-requisite distinctive to this program only - they must have 2,000 hours direct patient care in their work history prior to being accepted for the program . This can be accom plished in several ways, i.e., working as an em ergen cy m edical technician (E M T), an aide in a health care setting, etc.

Ultrasound: Ultrasound is a new and challenging specialized field o f medicine where sound waves are used as the im aging modality, producing pictures o f soft tissue.

Nuclear Medicine: The Nuclear Medicine Technologist assists the physician in the application o f radioactive materials (dye inserted in the veins to produce appropriate test results) for diagnosis and treatment o f patients and the study o f human diseases.

Radiation Therapy: The Radiation Therapist performs all phases o f radiation therapy treatment while under the supervision o f an on cology physician. This includes treatment planning and the use o f very sophisticated equipment.

1988 SKI TRIP Kettering C o lle g e o f M edical A rt’s Annual Ski T rip g rou p started o ff E A R L Y Sunday m orning, February 28, 1988. A lth ou gh m any o f us w ere just half awake, w e m a n a g ed to g e t our b a g g a g e c h eck ed and b oard the p lane fo r a departure fro m both the Cincinnati and C olu m b u s airports at 7:20 a.m. W e arrived in D en ver at 8:15 a.m. only to find a beautiful, w arm day and n o sn ow !

A fter filling tw o greyhou nd busses w on derin g what w e w ere g o in g to ski on, w e w ere finally o ff to W inter Park.

By the tim e th e g r o u p reach ed W inter Park w e w ere told th ere w as three to five fe et o f sn ow in the m ountains! W e arrived at Snow b laze C on d om in iu m s after a tw o hour bus ride and quickly u nloaded our belon gin gs, to o k a quick look around and h ead ed for a walk uptown for lunch.

That afternoon, m an y o f w h o went “ ski-less" rented our skis and other necessary eq u ip m en t at a nearby ski shop. W e then m et as a grou p to be given an orientation to W inter Park by s o m e S n ow b laze personnel. (O u r ‘ g ro u p ” con sisted o f 80 K C M A students, fo rm e r K C M A students, K C M A faculty, a ca d em y students, and S D A church m em b ers.)

M onday m orning every on e quickly ate breakfast and h ead ed to the slopes at W inter Park ski c o m p le x fo r a beautiful day o f skiing. W inter Park c o m p le x is m a d e up o f three adjacent m ountains called W inter Park, M ary Jane, and Vasquez which are all c o n n ec te d by ski trails and lifts. E ach m ountain has a beginner, an interm ediate, and an expert trail. W h ich to g eth er m ak e up 1220 acres.

A fter the lon g day o f skiing, m an y c a m e ba ck with sunburns, a few bruises, and lots o f so re and aching m uscles. N ee d les s to say, it did n'ttak e lon g to find the saunas and jacuzzis!

Tu esda y proved to b e another grea t day on the slopes, with tem peratures around 30°. In the even in g a storm front c a m e through du m pin g abou t 8 ” o f fluffy sn ow on the m ountains.

T h e skiing w as probably the best on W e d n e sd a y beca u se o f the new snow.

This is like slalom skiing. G re g g g a v e it up after lunch, but Marty and Shannon spent the w h ole day bein g daring souls.

Thursday was a lon g day with everyb od y trying to ski as m u ch as p ossible b e fore w e had to return h om e. Th at even in g after supper, m ost w en t ba ck to the c o n d o 's and p ack ed fo r our departure on Friday m orning. T h ere w ere a fe w w h o did last-minute sh opp in g and others w ent uptown to s e e w hat en ter­ tainm ent there w as to take in b e fo re leaving.

A t 7:00 a.m. Friday m orn in g the bu ses w ere ou t in front o f our c o n ­ d om in ium s ready to take us b a ck to the D en ver Stapleton Airport. When I stop to think about it, this yearbook could have been a m ere disaster. A s staff, we didn’t always see things the same way. S om e of us carried bouts o f serious melancholy while others surfaced as irate cholerics, both o f who were united by level-headed phlegmatics and happy sanguines. S om e o f the activities planned by S.A. for the 1987-88 school year include: the iceb­ reaker party held in the gym during the first week o f school. The spaghetti feed held at “ Divini Land," the Christmas party during the dorm open house, the ice skating party at Kettering Rec. Cen­ ter, the Valentine banquet at 10 Wilmington Place, the Dayton Philharm onic Concerts for free, as well as all those Friday night vespers.

Student Nurses Association Th e Student Nurses Association (S N A ) is a professional organization for students pursuing a career in nursing. The S N A provides seminars on current educational and politi­ cal issues in nursing. It also provides recreational oppor­ tunities for student nurses such as volleyball and picnics.

Beaven Black Society The Beaven-Black Student Society was form ed in 1977. It was named in honor o f Dr. A.V. Black, Chief o f Staff KMC and Dr. W.H. Beaven, Dean KCMA. It was these two people that brought the idea o f starting the P.A. Program at KCMA. The society itself is a student chapter o f the Am erican A cadem y of Physician Assistants. The society is involved in public aware­ ness programs such as B/P screening, health education and Pre-school P.E.’s. The society assists students in attending seminars away from KCMA and has held seminars in the Dayton area for students from other programs.

In 1974, Dan T o w n s en d b e c a m e director o f the group. By 1978, T h e D ed ica ­ tion S in gers w ere led by E d N eu feld. W h en Stan and Edith A p p le g a te b e ca m e directors o f the sin gin g grou p in 1978, Kettering M edical C enter to o k over s p o n ­ sorship. A choral fo rm a t w as also a d op ted at the s a m e tim e. A fter the 1985-1986 season, Jerry S h o em a k er b e c a m e director again.

Therefore, what is tim e? How is tim e m easured? W here does tim e g o ? What does time have to with YESTERD AY, TO D A Y , or T O M O R R O W ? W here were you Y E S TE R D A Y ? W here are you T O D A Y ? W here are you goin g TO M O R R O W ? Is there really an answer to any o f this T O D A Y ?

O ne day I stumbled upon the answer, but o f course, if you are bored reading all o f this I can understand why you m ight stop reading now. What? After reading through all those questions you want to know the answer. O.K. A re you ready? I found it in a very old book. Here it is: “I do not claim that I have already become perfect. I keep striving to win the prize for which Christ Jesus has already won me to Himself. .. .1 really do not think that I have won it; the one thing I do, however, is to forget what is behind me and do my best to reach what lies ahead.
