DEDICATION Dr. Margaret Rodenburg, D irector of the Scien ce D epartm ent of KCMA, is a con stan t source of inspiration, encouragment and gui­ dance. S h e confronts the challenges of many responsibilities with zeal.

Her vibrant enthusiasm directly affects all with whom she has contact.

In some, she awakens a curiosity to delve into the realm of higher learn­ ing. In others, she instills a desire to pursue edu­ cation on a higher pla­ teau. HISTORY " I t m ust b e an educational cen ter as well as a m edical service center. It will be necessary for the hospital to becom e involved in preparing young people for satisfying lives of service here and in other institutions in various parts of the world”. These were som e of the words which were spoken over twenty years ago when th e plans were laid for the Charles F. Kettering Memorial Hos­ pital, and the Kettering College of Medi­ cal Arts.

The M edical C enter was named for C harles F. Kettering, who was an en­ gineer, inventor, scien tist, executive, and educator of great com petence. He created many of the elem ents of the autom obile, the telephone, the diesel locom otive, and other developm ents which we today tak e for granted, none of w hich would have been p o ssible except for his very productive career.

He was born on a farm near Loudonville, Ohio, in 1 8 7 6 and was grad­ uated from Ohio Sta te University in 1 9 0 4 in E lectrical Engineering. During his lifetim e, he was awarded 3 6 hon­ orary doctoral degrees and 56 national and international awards for his many accom plishm ents.

In very practical ways, Mr. Kettering was interested in helping th e young people of his time prepare for meaning­ ful lives by acquiring skills, knowledge, and wisdom, and because of his interest in the future, he sought to stim ulate new educational ideas and plans. He placed great em phasis on the value of tech n ical and vocational training and education in a setting that would pre­ pare students to take their p laces in society as invalued, active m em bers of their com m unities.

Mr. and Mrs. Eugene W. Kettering, in harmony with the father’s philosophy, have estab lish ed K etterin g Medical Center, with Kettering College of Medi­ cal Arts as its educational division. The C ollege provides opportunities for the development of skills in medically rela­ ted technologies and institutional de­ partmental leadership in a sound edu­ cational environment.

SPORTS In the belief that true education is the har­ m onious developm ent of the physical, mental, and spiritual powers of the ind­ ividual, physical educa­ tion courses are designed to teach principles of phys­ ical fitness, healthful liv­ ing, and the wise use of leisure time. Individual sports and recreatio n al activities are taught with the purpose of develop­ ing a healthful, active life which will be continued beyond the college years.

STUDIES Energy! That’s what stu­ dies at KCMA require. The courses are rigorous, time consuming, and challeng­ ing. However, the small classes and much individ­ ual attention enable stu­ dents to learn m uch more than often thought poss­ ible. Peter Ustinov once stated, “I am convinced that it is of primordial im­ portance to learn more every year than the year before. After all, what is education but a process by which a person begins to learn how to learn?.”

At Kettering, the curr­ icula are designed not only to ed u cate students to work in a profession after graduation but also to pre­ pare them for a life of learning in all future en ­ deavors.

THEME From its beginning, the philosophic principle upon which Kettering C ollege of Medical Arts has functioned, states that Christian values should reflect through all activities whether they are intellectual, physical or social.

Through courses of instruc­ tion, clinical rotations, assem­ blies, labs, and in every other aspect of the college learn­ ing experience, it is the hope of KCMA to nurture a sense of caring and com passion in the character of each one of us.

A Student’s View of BMET A different, exciting and most of all a challenging career. A field that is the m erger of two of th e largest p ro fessio n a l fields— electronics and m edi­ cine. Not only will we be work­ ing on the patient related elec­ tronic equipm ent but we will also interact with the doctors, nurses, and staff in helping to operate and use the equip­ ment properly. We will also troubleshoot, repair, inspect, install, and do preventive main­ tenance checks to insure that every piece of equipm ent is working properly and help to maintain it at that level. It is a good job, we get to m eet p eo ­ ple and help the hospital run more efficiently. There is also a large demand for us and the pay is pretty good also.

Rad Tech is a program that fits my interests and needs.

What do electrons, anatomy and film have in com m on????

In the hands of an RT graduate, these items plus knowledge of rad­ iography combine to produce diag­ nostic radiographs which aid in the assessment of health and disease.

Many topics have to be studied though before a student may grad­ uate and becom e certified — such topics as film density, fog and coin­ ing, methods of rectification, dosi­ metry, con trast m edia and image receptors. By the time graduation occurs, students know how to take acceptable radiographs and, equally important, how to demonstrate a car­ ing attitude toward a sick and anx­ ious patient.

WHAT IS MEDICAL LABORATORY TECHNOLOGY? Medical Laboratory Technology is a program that offers a unique opportunity to learn new techniques in an ever changing medical field.

The MLT program is more than examining specimens through a mic­ roscope. It is being responsible for the operation of complex electronic equipment, computers, and precise instruments that analyze blood, body fluids, and other samples. It is aiding the physician by collecting valuable data necessary to diagnose and pro­ vide the best care for an ill or injured patient.

Com petence in this field is gained by courses of study and clinical ro­ tations in the four major areas of the laboratory: Blood Banking, Chemis­ try, Hematology, and Microbiology.

A P.A. is all of these things and more. The Physician Assistant works with physician supervision to pro­ vide quality patient care in many medical specialties. These include family practice, internal medicine, surgery, pediatrics, obstetrics/gynecology, orthopedics, dermatology, neurology, opthamology, otolaryn­ gology, anesthesia, and even den­ tistry.

A Physician Assistant works hand in hand with all health care pro­ fessionals with the sam e goal in mind... the patient. This didactic ed­ ucation, the clinical training and con­ tinuing education requirements help to ensure that the Physician Assis­ tant will be well prepared to do his part in attaining this goal.

But the things I rem em ­ ber most are the things no one told me about before I entered the Nurs­ ing Program at KCMA, like the --trials and tribulations of care plans, -em otional anguish when my patients got sicker instead of better, —deep joy in seeing critical patients regain their health, -h a rd physical labor in lifting and moving patients (I know what “bone weary” means!)

GENERAL EDUCATION The world is changing! Jo b s are changing! People need different skills to adapt to a changing environ­ ment—different technical skills, cop­ ing skills.

Our professional curricula teach us to function in the world as it curren­ tly exists; our general education studies give us background for cer­ tain technical courses but, more im­ portantly, help us to develop skills in: -p roblem solving skills --communication skills -thinking skills -d a ta collection and analysis skills -m an agem en t skills -ind epend ent learning skills -interpersonal skills The often maligned general ed­ ucation course actually serves two purposes in our quest to be an “Ed­ ucated Person”. From the first time we stepped foot in KCMA, to the triumphant m om ent of receiving our diplomas and degrees, the journey to graduation has not al­ ways been easy. Along the way we encountered frus­ trating moments. Rem em ­ ber the days we couldn’t get that dressing right and the instructor made us do it over ag ain ... for th e fourth time? Or what about the times we spent trying to get those breaths and com pressions just right in CPR class? Or the time we needed blood “STAT” and the patient refused to have it drawn? Well, we finally succeeded in achiev­ ing our goals and we stand united as graduates. We are all dedicated to our varied professions. We leave prepared to help those who are in need.

From the first m om ent of their arrival, the new students have great expec­ tations from them selves and from the school. These potential scholars com ­ prise that student faction known as “undergradu­ ates.” They com e from a variety of settings, rang­ ing from seasoned college students transferring in from other universities to high school graduates who are just beginning their college education.

Y et, though their back­ grounds are differing, al­ m ost all of them share a few com m on characteris­ tics. T h e s e include: an enthusiasm for learning, a willingness to make new friends, and a desire for a quality education in their field of interest.

It serves to provide a m eans whereby the physician assistants can m eet and discuss issues con­ cerning their profession, or organize civic activities rela­ ted to their field. Yearbook

YEARBOOK Who could possibly explain what it was like to work on the 1 9 8 6 yearbook??? Can you imagine put­ ting us, Nicky Kinsey, Holly Ippisch, Ruben Osorio, Jon Velasco, Jesse Willett, Rob Snider and Phil Ash­ ton in one room together and des­ cribing the results? ...strange things happened.

1 2 0 pages (not in order) times 11 pictures per page, plus copy for 3 0 pages equals 3 9 ,6 0 0 pieces of chaos. Add in seven starving stomachs, seven brains smolder­ ing from eight hours of classes and who knows how many ach­ ing muscles, and you have the ingredients for a disaster. Did we also m ention DEA D LIN ES for turning in the sections?? Tense, nervous, overworked, underpre­ ssure equals Class A Headaches.

But in our group, there was a magic ingredient... something co­ hesive, something tremendously powerful... because its energy was great enough to overcom e all the forces pushing toward disaster.

What was that elusive glue that held the group together, working together toward an awesome goal?

Unique personalities perhaps? ...a spirit of team work? friend­ ship? tolerance?

No on e knows. W hat we do know is that the yearbook hap­ pened. What should have been chaos (often looked like chaos), wasn’t. In spite of the mess, we had fun, laughed, joked, planned, designed and even argued. Crea­ tivity was, in a sense, its own re­ ward—because there was a sense of fulfillment and enjoyment dur­ ing the process. In addition to the memories which we now have, the yearbook is physical evidence of those happy times.

RELIGION Our Father Which Art in Heaven, We thank you for the challenges you have placed before us. As we travers­ ed th e hurdles we felt ourselves stretching and grow ing e a ch tim e. Al­ though we resisted change and grow th, b e ca u se it often produced anxiety and frustration, we thank you for the opportunities we have had at Kettering College and most impor­ tantly, for the secure know­ ledge that you are with us each step of the way.
