New ideas are always developing.
Sm For years, Shawnee Mission Medical Center has been recognized as a progressive developer of ideas. F o r in stan ce, our P r e -A d m is s io n T estin g program allows a patient to com plete routine tests as an out-patient several days before scheduled surgery. The patients can then be admitted on the day of surgery, saving them both time and expense. Within the past year, w e’ve begun offering medical and dental services in three area shopping malls. And waiting to see the doctor or dentist was never such fun. Handy pagers allow patients to shop until they hear a “ beep,” meaning the doctor will see them in 10 minutes. Our concept of paging patients is so innovative it has been reported in several national newspapers, radio-TV networks, and the Readers Digest.

Facilities within our 383-bed hospital are just as progressive. Portable Telecom munications Devices for the D eaf (T D D ’s ) m ake it possible for deaf patients to p la ce and re c e iv e te le p h o n e ca lls fro m the convenience o f their own hospital room . A n d S M M C recently purchased new x-ray c a s s e tte s w hich red u ce radiation d o s a g e to patients by 5 0 to 75 percent without sacrificing im age quality. The ideas don’t stop here. We are constantly adding new program s and facilities to better serve our progressive community. A t Shawnee Mission Medical Center, w e’re as interested as ever to see the whole picture develop.
