The Kettering Story he price of progress is trouble and I don’t think the price is too high,” the words of Charles F. Kettering, a man who spent his life doing what other men said couldn’t be done. In 1876, America celebrated 100 years of inde­ pendence, Mark Twain’s Tom Sawyer was published, A lex­ ander Graham Bell invented the telephone, and Charles F. Kettering was born, far from the fanfare in the little town of Loudinville, Ohio. As a young man he taught school to fi­ nance his own education. Poor eyesight, making it difficult to read and study forced him to withdraw from the University of Ohio more than once. When not in school, K etterin g worked for the local telephone company # not in the office — but in the field. His duty was to “ fix” things. And figura­ tively speaking, he kept on fix­ ing things the rest of his life. A pioneer in the automotive in­ dustry, the developer of the diesel engine, and of new medi­ cal procedures, Charles F. Ket­ tering was a pacemaker dedi­ cated to making the future world a better place to live.

ettering Medical Center, Stubbs Memorial Health Center, Sycamore Hospital, and our own Kettering College of Medical Arts make up our medical facilities. With more than 600 acute care beds, Ket­ tering Medical Center serves over 25,000 patients each year. As Charles F. Kettering put it, “ People need to be shown the desirability of pro­ ducts that will raise the stan­ dard of living.” KMC, like the man, is dedicated to progress and service, to filling human needs, to improving a way of life. Some days at the hospital are rewarding and encourage the dedication of the students, but there are also long, tedious hours when even the most ad­ vanced medical technology leaves you feeling totally help­ less.

Whether it is the inaugura­ tion of Baby Television, or a new parking lot that makes KMC more accessible, the Ket­ tering spirit lives on, reaching out to the whole person, emo­ tionally, physically, spiritually.

Ketter­ ing. In 1967 Kettering College of Medical Arts was begun with this goal in mind. Pens, paper, textbooks, additional reference material, calculators, comput­ erized quiz sheets, PD R ’s, stethoscopes, and labcoats are only a few of the “ things” that fill our days. W e hide within four walls (or maybe in library cubicles) and try desperately to cram facts and figures into our already filled minds — call it sensory overload. Anxiety and frustration rises, but midnight doesn’t bring sleep nor relief of tension headaches. Only the accomplishment of learned theories makes those bleary hours worth it. KCMA, with its two year programs, involving book-theory and “ hands-on” experience, is designed to pre­ pare dedicated and deter­ mined students for health care professions. The 20th century is an exciting period in medical history with growing knowl­ edge, and a new, awesome technology.

— It’s Activities well balanced person is one who not only taxes his mind but also his physical abilities, reaching above and beyond previous accomplish­ ments. KCM A encourages this through teamwork, one-onone, or just challenging against oneself. Speed, strength, en­ durance, perserverance, agility and coordination are essential in achieving one’s goal.

Students take the iniative to involve themselves with indi­ vidual sports; tennis, running, aerobics, sw im m ing, and weight lifting. The challenges and physical exertion of sports provide an outlet for the built up tension as well as an enjoy­ able social time.

It’s Friends

eople need people. Here at Kettering we broaden our horizons by making new friends, not just from the Day­ ton area, but from New Eng­ land to the West Coast. Each person brings with him a unique accent and interesting culture. Smiling together, learning together, growing to­ gether, w e’re creating mo­ ments and memories. As strangers we start out the school year with a watermelon feed, water-skiing at Caesar Creek, a pancake breakfast, and minigolf. “ Make-your-ownsundaes” , a day at King’s Is­ land, roller skating, donut par­ ties, football until dark, and many other activities fill our spare moments. December brings the chill of winter.

Christmas spirit fills the dorm with decorating, cleaning, and practicing for the open house Christmas party which we share with relatives and friends. Another special mem­ ory is the annual dinner the­ atre, La Comedia, an evening of dress-up and fun on Valen­ tine’s Day. The warmth of Spring fills the air as well as hearts. As the school year ends, we separate taking fond memories of friendship and love.

long week of jangling alarm clocks, lectures too fast for note taking, tests we should have expected, and at last the weekend comes. The tranquility of a peace­ ful, quiet moment is a blessed change from the rapid pace of our weekly schedules. Come, take a walk on a clear star lit night through Carillon park, or along the river ba/ik watching the glittering reflec­ tion of Dayton. L et’s feed ducks at Cox Arboretum, sing around the grand piano in the dorm lobby, or relax on a river boat cruise down the Cincinnati River. W e’d love to have you join us. As the dorm is a place full of friends, so Kettering church is full of family — parties we don’ t plan, potlucks when we come empty handed, homes where we can’t wear out our welcome.

W e are thankful for this time to pray and praise our Creator while enjoying nature’s beauty around us. “ And on the sabbath we went out of the city by a river side, ” Acts 16:13.

kyscapers, factories, bill­ boards, flashing lights, and twisting super highways mark the energetic, industrial city of Dayton.

Five miles south of the city he loved, Charles Kettering built his home, Ridgeleigh Ter­ race on a hill with a panoramic view of Dayton. In 1955 the village located near the Ketter­ ing estate was named in his honor.

K C M A ’ s proximity to a larger city allows us to pursue life beyond the college/hospi­ tal world. The theatre, con­ certs, plays, parks and restau­ rants provide welcome diver­ gences from the learning rou­ tine.

Philosophically, we perceive a need to live life to its fullest in order to more fully appreciate the lives that will be dependent on us in the future.

Chapter 3 Academics

Optimal health results when the physical, social and spiritual aspects of the human being become integrated into a balanced whole. The individual makes constant attempts to maintain equilibrium in the midst of a changing environment. With the assistance of trained medical persons this process of returning to equilibrium isn’t of such stress for the individual.

The two year curriculums at KCM A are predominately medical orient­ ed. Upon completion of studies, the graduate will receive an associate of science degree, becoming a beginning practitioner or planning for upper division studies at a four year university.

No matter what curriculum you have chosen or your place of em ploy­ ment, make it your challenge to “ give it your all!” “ W e are to look upon every duty, however humble, as sacred because it is part of God’s service. Our daily prayer should be “ Lord, help me to do my best. Teach me how to do better work. Give me energy and cheerful­ ness. Help me to bring into my service the loving ministry of the Savior.”

The Biomedical Electronics Technition, or BMET, is an individual knowledgeable in the theory of operation, the underlying physiological principles, and safe, practical, clinical application of biomedical equip足 ment. Because of the widespread development and usage of this complex equipment, the BMET has become a vital member of the modern medical team.

BMET students are continually informed of new developments in their rapidly changing field. Their practicum includes work experience in sever足 al types of BMET departments. This training program allows the BMET student to better prepare for future employment.

The Clinical Dietetic Technician works supportively with the Registered Dietitian to provide nutritional care for patients. Visiting these patients, and preparing individualized diet plans for them, provide an opportunity to combine an interest in the sciences with a people-oriented profession.

Approved by the American Dietetic Association, the Dietetic Techni足 cian program at KCM A provides the student with a marketable skill after two years of study.

General Education

In addition to attending classes in their respective curriculum, students also attend courses in general educa足 tion. English and religion classes, soci足 ology, psychology, and a wide range of phys. ed. courses are just a few in the General Education program here at KCMA. The variety provides students with a well-rounded study program as well as a change of pace from their curricu足 lum. Medical Laboratory Technology is a program designed to provide a vital role in clinical laboratory examinations. The analysis of different body fluids and the association of pathological states is the main emphasis of the clinical program.

Employment opportunities for medical laboratory technitions are found in hospital and private laboratories as well as industry and a wide variety of other settings.

Nursing, as a scicnce, focuses on both the well being of both patient and family and on the technical skills of the nurse practitioner. Nursing in­ volves not simply medical skills, but also decision making, evaluating, supporting, understanding, and most of all, caring and just being there.

In a field that has increasing knowledge, improved concepts and proce­ dures that are making those once learned obsolete, it is essential for the nurse to be flexible and constantly acquiring new knowledge.

Florence Nightingale stated that nursing is to “ put the patient in the best condition for nature to act upon.”

In September of 1973, Kettering College of Medical Arts opened its doors to one of the fastest growing allied health professions around — Physician Assistants.

The Physician’s Assistant is skilled, trained & qualified under the super­ vision of a physician and is capable of practicing in a variety of locations all over the country.

A M A approved, Physician Assistants emphasize a combination of both basic science and intensive patient contact in forming the care of, not only the person as a patient, but the patient as a person.

Respiratory Therapy is one of the newest, most rapidly advancing health care fields developing today, and is currently the second largest curriculum at KCMA. It involves diagnostic procedures, and aids in prevention of cardiopul­ monary disorders. Students also learn Basic Life Support techniques and become involved in passing these skills on to members of the community by leading out in the instruction of CPR. Respiratory Therapy students at KCM A are involved in one of the foremost clinical and academic respiratory programs in Ohio and sur­ rounding states.

The Diagnostic Imaging Modalities program is dedicated towards the assisting of the physicans in their efforts to find abnormalities within the body that cannot be seen with the naked eye. This is done through the use of x-rays and other forms of ionizing radiation.

As medical science advances, so must the field of Diagnostic Imaging Modalities. Orginally known as Radiology, it is now expanded to include Ultrasound and Special Procedures as a part of its program.

Ultrasound, a non radioactive, non invasive technology specializes in the imaging of soft tissue organs through the use of high frequency sound waves.

Special Procedures include C.T. Scanners, CDL, CVL, Angiography, and a new procedure, Digital Angiography.
