Whether it’s just mugs or candids it’s the people of KCMA. Students at Kettering make the school tick and add a variety of characteristics to the school. Space doesn’t allow for everyone to get their mug shot in, but here are a few people w ho did get caught by the mad shutter-bug. SPIRIT Springtime is not just a time for grass to sprout and flowers to bloom, it’s a time for joggers or runners to come out of the gym and back into the fresh air.

I can’t tell you for sure but, (on left) yes it is. It’s Bob Wohlmark and John Madson (on right) out running for their health. Bob and John are both second year respiratory therapy students who enjoy a nice four mile run in their spare time (which is hard to come by). Note the determined look on Bob’s face and the smile on John’s as they run. I can tell they really enjoy running. Well it looks as though they have had enough of running for one day; after all, it’s a lot of work for your lungs and your heart. What’s this! John seems to be having some difficulty but Bob is near by to help out with CPR which he is well trained in. After a few moments John is fine again — note the smile on John’s face — GOOD GOING Bob!

Oh, I w ill.” And fun is w h a t 56 p e o p le ha d. On S u n d a y, M a rc h 2, 1980, a t 9 :3 0 am th re e instructors, numerous students and one of the instructor's children made themselves as com fortable as possible in three vans and the hospital’s W inne­ bago. Thus marked the beginning of a long eight hour trip to Grayling, Mich, to stay at Camp Au Sable. However, the trip was not without excitem ent as expressed by Dawn Campbell and Kay Anne Wehrman (opposite page lower rt. corner).

The first day of skiing was Monday, M a rch 3, at H a nse n, tw o sm a ll ski slopes about 10 minutes from Camp Au Sable. It was here the beginner skiiers swallowed their pride, fell a lot and got their first lesson in skiing. Advanced skiers like Pam Britain (top left oppo­ site page) practiced some ballet. Ken Anderson and Howard Johnson dis­ cuss their strategy for the day (bottom left opposite page) Deanna Nickerson and Marie Barber ride the T-bar to the top of Hansen Hill, (middle left opposite page) Numerous pairs of skis wait to be loaded b e fore the trip (o p p o site page). On Tuesday with rented skiis from Hansen, if you didn’t have your own, the group ventured onto Shuss Mt. This was a real treat for there were many hills to choose from and to test y o u r s k ills . On W e d n e s d a y it w as Boyne Highlands which was approxi­ mately an hour drive. Despite below zero weather and snow falling almost everyone agreed that Boyne was the best day of skiing. The beginners were now ad va n ce d and m ore s e cu re in their skiing and the experienced skiers were really showing off.

Even after skiing all day, the group had e n e rg y a t n ig h t. H e re S h a ro n Holmes, Lynette Jordheim, Lisa Bow­ man and Staush Kowalski are being entertained, (top rt.) Dianne Brenner, Kay Anne Wehrman and Dawn Camp­ bell are paying close attention (middle left) and Roy Chew, Pat Vestal and Peg O ’Neal engage in some socialization, (middle rt.) Distance has made the heart grow fonder in the case of Dawn Campbell and Mark Zork. They’ve been dating for five years but have been parted 1,000 miles for three years!

After almost one year of school, John Madsen and Patty Sexton met in the library. After the wed­ ding they plan on moving to Orlando, Florida.

[*ujo c y ic jii/7 Yes, our diet is a very important part of our lives. The foods we eat influence our: physical status — whether it be in health or illness; and mental status — whether it be our behaviors of the attitudes we reflect toward ourselves and others.

Stressing the importance of our diet is just one of the responsibilities a clinical dietetic technician learns to face as a student and as a graduate. Upon completion of the Dietetic Pro­ gram, the Clinical Dietetic Technician, working under the supervision of a Registered Dietitian will be involved in such activities as taking diet histories and evaluating dietary habits; plan­ ning nutrition care programs; instructing per­ sons in normal and therapeutic diet principles; participating in nutrition care follow-up; and answering any questions related to nutrition care that a patient may have.

Communicating, understanding, and helping those patients that need can be very rewarding for the Clinical Dietetic Technician.

The Medical Office Assistant Program takes a new twist this year. Trying to escape the stereotype of “ office” assistants, they have dropped the “ O ffice” to stress that they aren’t just secretaries. Instead, they are trained to be versatile medical assistants which include the duties of laboratory techniques, nursing, x-ray techniques, office procedures and secretarial work.

The 2 year MA Program prepares the student to deal with patients, families and other medical personnel, by working in various departments of the hospital such as the Emer­ gency Room, Physical Medicine, and Medical Records. At the end of their 2 long years, they spend an externship in various doctors’ offices using the procedures and skills they have learned. All of this experience, knowledge and understanding of human needs makes a Medical Assistant an invaluable asset in any d octor’s office or medical institu­ tion.

And what was the reason for all the discontent? â&#x20AC;&#x153; I need Class begins for Barb Ellison and her first year followers.

Ah so! The not so significant man smiled to himself and quietly slipped out the back door. He went out into the stre e t and fou n d some people and gave them white lab coats and taught them to use microscopes and make slides. He showed them how to count RBC’s and WBC’s. Their ability to pour c u ltu re s and to re co g n ize b a cte ria flo urishe d . They studied chem istry, microbiology, physiology, hematology, serology. Oh myology!!!

Two years later the little man and his group of followers went back to the not so famous hospital, on a not so unu­ sual day to find the doctors screaming, the nurses in sackcloth and ashes, and the x-ray techs locked in their control booths for their own safety!!

They went right to work with baskets in hand. They obtained samples of blood, made cultures, looked at slides and gave out information. “ The lady in room 26 has a low blood count.’’ “ The man in room 42 has a staphylococcus infection!” “ Who are we? Well . . They stopped and looked for the little not so significant man who was suddenly very significantly missing. Silence prevailed for the first time in years as doctors and nurses closed in around the group. “ Well, you see, w e’re just Medical Laboratory Technicians. We could see you needed help and we were just trying to give you some.” “ Help us?? You are hired!!” roared the head doctor. “ Here, sign on the dotted line. Why, w e’ll give you a whole department to yourselves. Just move right on in. Step back, folks. These people need room to work!”

The MLT’s smiled at each other and turned to gather their equipment. As they did so they caught sight of a familiar knowing wink and suddenly realized its significance. (Just ask any MLT student.

The S.A. sponsored a com­ munity project this year in which a mother and her two c h ild re n b en e fite d fro m a h o u se -cle a n in g and paint jo b by v o lu n te e rin g s tu ­ dents. Friday evenings were no longer a drag around the dorm as each one was scheduled for a film, musical program or a faculty openhouse. The participating stu­ dents learned to utilize their own re so u rce s and tho se made a va ila b le to them .

Some learned to play volley­ ball, some learned to lead o ut in co m m itte e s, and some learned to enjoy life. It was their time to grow.

1979 Septem ber is the month all school age kids hate, because it means summer is coming to an end.

KCMA started its new school year with the SA fall pic足 nic. The day started with a game of softball. When this was finished, they had Frisbee skills tests that included long distance throwing and accuracy.

While the hotdogs were being roasted, several tug-owar games were initiated. Following this strenuous activ足 ity, the hotdogs were devoured as well as salads and hundreds of brownies. The day ended with a challenging game of football.

S eptem ber also in clu d e d an assem bly of K arate, whose participants were from an area school. They dem足 onstrated their skills of self defense in combat, a few of their routines, and skills in breaking boards and bricks with their bare hands and feet!

On October 5, at General Assembly, we were pleased to have Bob Englehart, a cartoonist for the Dayton Jour­ nal Herald.

He entertained us with political figures, varying bumper stickers, and even some of our own faculty members. His presentation was well given, and it held the attention of all students present.

That same weekend, O ctober 5-7, was o ur annual Mohaven Campout. Friday evening consisted mainly of sitting around the fireplace in the lodge, chatting, and awaiting the arrival of more friends.

Saturday morning began with a short church service during which Michael Simpson and Mike Karr performed a skit.

Following church, lunch was served and it was time for afternoon activities. The activities varied from afternoon naps, to a hike down the devil’s backbone and to the haunted house.

When the last stragglers returned, supper was served, after w hich came games and “ m ake-it-yourself” sun­ daes.

Sunday morning, the energetic few embarked on a canoe outing, w hile those of us more w eary headed home.

November marks the beginning of the ping-pong vol足 leyball season. During the next three or four months, the gym will usually be filled with students playing ping-pong during a break, or students playing volleyball during P.E. class, or for intramurals.

On November 16, Frank Hale, from Ohio State Univer足 sity, was here to speak to us in Assembly.

November 22 and 23 were granted as vacation days in order to provide a long weekend in which to celebrate Thanksgiving.

1979 December is the month most students look forward to. “ Why?” you ask? Need we tell you?? VACATION TIME away from HOMEWORK (at least in most cases).

On Sunday, December 16, the KMC annual Christmas Party was held in the college gym. There were approxi­ mately 10 booths representing different countries. Food from each country was served at that booth.

The entertainment consisted of foreign dancers, KCMA Chorale, the Dedication Singers, and Spring Valley Acad­ emy Girls Choir.

Following the Christmas Party were final exams and our much needed, and appreciated, Christmas Vacation.

1980 On January 13, at 4 p.m., the Freshman Nurs­ ing Students passed one of their most important milestones, the Capping Ceremony.

The candidates were led in by Rudy and Anita Quackenbush, and seated in the front six rows of the Kettering Church.

The program then began with a duet by Dr. Danny Oh and Roger McNeily.

The dedication address was given by Jean Shumway, a registered nurse from KMC’s Contin­ uing Education Department.

Following the dedication address, the candi­ dates were capped by the Senior Nursing Stu­ dents. This was followed by a candle lighting cer­ emony and the recitation of the Florence Night­ engale Pledge.

Following the program, a reception was held for the candidates, their families and friends.

February is for sweetheart, so KCMA celebrated Valen­ tine’s Day by going to La Comedia to see the play Harvey.

Before the play we were invited to serve ourselves from the salad bar, and cheese and crackers were brought to our tables. After salad came a buffet meal of several entrees, vegetables, salads and bread. It was a wonderful evening, and all present had a good time.

Also in the month of February were events such as Cre­ ation, INC (in the name of Christ), the Student Talent Pro­ gram, and our Week of Spiritual Emphasis.

Speakers during the Week of Spiritual emphasis were Hazel Burns, homemaker, Dr. Beaven, KCMA Dean, Bob Wilson, religion teacher, Chaplain Ron G ordon, KMC Chaplain’s Office, and Dr. Charles Bensonhaver, KMC Psychiatrist.

1980 On Friday, March 14, The Dayton Ballet Company per足 formed for General Assembly. The team which performed consisted of five girls and one boy, all from area schools.

The coordinator of the program narrated as the perform足 ers showed us some of their warm-up exercises, and a series of pirouettes.

They ended the program with a segment from a west足 ern ballet.

On March 28, we were entertained by The Wright State University Chorus. They had just completed an extensive tour, and they performed pieces of their tour program for us. The program included mostly folk tunes sung in their native languages. Most pieces were acappella, but some were performed with piano accompaniment.

The main highlights in April were Mr. Simon Anderson from the University of Cincinnatti, and the well remem­ bered Faculty vs. Varsity basketball game.

On April 4, we were entertained by Mr. Simon Ander­ son with all types of music imaginable. What he didn’t have recorded, he either sang or played on the piano himself. Whether it was classical or opera, his program brought smiles and laughter to everyone present.

They happened to be Nancy D olphin, Debbie Edwards, Marti Jackson, Phyllis Sawvell and M elanie Wuchenich. And what were they doing you ask? They were the cheerleaders for the faculty basketball team. Of course, the varsity had their own cheerleaders, consist­ ing of C h e ryl W e stfa ll, Kaye Ann W ehrm an, K ath y Cochran, Kathy Gardner, and Dianne Brenner.

The faculty cheerleaders may have been slightly louder with Marti’s trombone, but it was to no avail, because the varsity won anyway!

June 27 was a day of many awards. For Freshman Nursing studnets there was a $500 Scholarship from the Reynolds Fund. These scholarships went to Brenda Balster, Marie Barber, Rena Collingsworth, Kim Cottle, Jean足 ette Fortner, Linda Hamlin, Kyle Heck, Sharon Holmes, Jill H u tchinson, Susan Marsh, Carol Owens, M arion Reese, Tammy Slaton, Amanda Thomas, Judy Williams, and Debra Wright (some of these students are pictured below).

Another scholarship awarded to Nursing students was the Belleman Fund for two Senior students interested in Cardio-pulmonary nursing. These scholarships went to Kaye Wehrman and Joy Ellis (pictured at r.).

The Chemistry department awarded two scholarships to Jean Franzer (pictured at bottom r.) and Wendy Wil足 liams.

Jon Schriver was awarded $350 from the Montgomery County Auxilliary Society, and Teresa Borchers received $200 from the Mary Buckley Scholarship Fund.

The evening also included a scholar­ ship given to Jill Swearingen by Dr. Bylsma of the Pathology Dept.; good­ byes to Miss Vaughan as she leaves for a new position as a Vice-President at Kettering Hospital: and, the award of Honorary Alum nus given to Dr. Don Martin.
