We will always be linked now and in the future because we are members of a professional team, links in the chain of qual­ ity patient care. In their educa­ tio n a l e x p e rie n c e , stu d e n ts learn to commit and can form their lives into the mold of a teamwork philosophy of serv­ ice for others.

Every graduate of Kettering College plays a role in the total care of the patient. Each is a link in the chain o f se rvice , coordinating and intertwining his efforts of ministering.

Our teamwork is not always clear to us as our attention is intensely directed toward the study and application of a par­ ticular field, but when we look at m ed icin e as a w hole, we begin to see the relationships.

We need each other. We par­ ticipate together, each in his own way; we communicate; we c o n trib u te to each o th e rs efforts. Each of us is a link in the care of every patient. The story of Martin Williams illus­ trates this. He is a hypothetical p a tie n t, but his s itu a tio n is common.

March 10 9:15 a.m.

Martin Williams, a retired business executive arrives at his fam ily physician’s office, complaining about being winded after exercise and having frequent heartburn. The medical assistant greets Mr. Williams courteously, tells him the doctor will be ready shortly and requests that he wait in the lounge area.

9:30 a.m Another medical assistant calls Mr. Williams and ushers him to an examining room. She asks him to take his shirt off and takes his blood pressure, pulse, and temperature and writes the results on his record. She then asks him to wait in the room for a history and physical by a physician’s assistant.

9:45 a.m.

The physician assistant com es in, introduces himself, and begins asking a series of questions to develop Mr. William’s medical history.

10:25 a.m.

The doctor comes in and reviews the history and physical with the physician’s assistant and the patient, and asks a few additional questions. The doctor tells Mr. Williams he’d like to have an EKG

and an X-ray done and that the medical assistant will be in to perform the procedure, 10:35 a.m.

The medical assistant returns to Mr. Williams, explains what an EKG is, that it won't hurt, and it will take about 10 minutes. She does the procedure and then takes him to another room for a chest X-ray.

10:55 a.m.

The PA and Dr. Clark look over the results of the EKG and the chest X-ray. The results show ques足 tionable ischemic changes, and the chest X-ray shows an enlarged heart. Dr. Clark and the PA decide that further evaluation for Mr. Williams is needed, and recommend hospitalization.

11:05 a.m.

After discussing the need for further evaluation with Mr. Williams, and obtaining his consent, Dr. Clark had the MA arrange for a cardiology con足 sult, and admission to Kettering Hospital for the following day. The admitting orders call for a

10:00 a.m.

Mr. Williams and his wife are accompanied to his room by a volunteer where they meet his nurse.

She arranges for his personal comfort, attempt­ ing to make him feel more at ease and interviews Mr. Williams to acquire some basic information for his chart. She also explains that several hospi­ tal employees will be visiting him for tests and treatments.

1:30 p.m.

Mr. Williams is awakened from his nap, by a labo­ ratory technician, who explains that she needs some blood for analysis in the laboratory.

3:00 p.m.

Mr. Williams is wheeled down to the Radiology department for his chest X-ray.

7:00 p.m.

The nurse tells Mr. Williams about the cardiac catherization presentation on the hospital televi­ sion channel this evening at 8:30 p.m.

9:00 p.m.

During evening care the nurse inquires if there are any questions about the cardiac catheriza­ tio n , or a n y th in g he d id n ’t u n d e rsta n d . She explains that he can’t eat or drink anything after midnight.

March 15

CATHERIZATION

8:00 a.m.

Mr. Williams’ heart catherization is scheduled for 10:00 a.m. His nurse starts getting him ready by reading his baseline vital signs, reminds him that he can’t eat anything, and encourages him to show er and shave. The nurse has a surgery check list and makes sure everything is ready to go.

9:00 a.m.

Mr. Williams’ nurse starts an IV and also inquires if he has anymore questions about the proce­ dure.

10:00 a.m.

A cardiologist conducts the catherization in the radiology department. The equipment has been technically set up by a radiologic technologist who also assists during the catherization.

12:00 p.m.

Mr. Williams is served lunch, and becomes quite upset about the tasteless food he’s gotten. The nurse explains the importance of cutting down the salt and fat quantity in his meals. She tells him a dietetic technician would be in to see him later in the day.

1:20 p.m.

The dietetic technician visits Mr. Williams and inquires about his food preferences and eating patterns. From this she makes recommendations and provides Mr. Williams with guidelines as to how he can most easily adapt his food patterns to achieve improved health through a low sodium and modified fat eating style. Mrs. Williams is also closely involved in this part of his care, and she eagerly seeks out information from the dietetic technician as to how to interpret food labels so as to select appropriate food items and prepare foods without sacrificing flavor on a low sodium diet.

March 16 8:00 a.m.

The cardiologist talks to the nurse in charge of Mr. W illia m s and tells him the c a th e riz a tio n results, which are 80% occlusion of two major vessels. The cardiologist recommends that Mr. Williams have open heart surgery. After much consideration and many questions, Mr. Williams reluctantly agrees.

8:38 a.m.

Mr. Williams’ condition is stable, and the cardiolo­ gist discharges him.

9:00 a.m.

Mrs. Williams helps her husband get his things together. The nurse explains the doctor’s orders, Meds; S.E.: low solium, low cholesterol, low satu­ rated fat diet Sx. of Ml; Dr.’s appoint.

9:30 a.m.

Mr. Williams leaves the hospital for home

3-4:00 p.m.

Mr. Williams and his wife return to the hospital and he is readmitted to 2-West. A nurse orients

him to his room 8:00 p.m.

The cardiologist and heart surgeon visit Mr. Wil­ liams, explaining the events of the next few days.

At the nursing station, they write pre-op orders for Mr. Williams’ coronary artery by-pass graft surgery.

9:30 p.m.

A nurse explains the d octor’s orders and the rea­ sons why it is important for Mr. Williams to follow them.

12:30 p.m.

A dietetic technician visits Mr. Williams to see how he is managing with his diet. She finds that Mr. Williams is still eating foods with high salt and

After Mr. Williams’ lunch is over, a nurse from surgery visits him and his wife to explain what will happen in the operating room. Then she takes them to the Cardio-Thoracic Care Unit and tells them that this is where Mr. Williams will go after he spends a short time in the recovery room. The nurse then returns Mr. Williams to his room.

5:00 p.m.

After a light supper, a nurse preps Mr. Williams for the next day’s surgery.

10:00 p.m.

Mr. Williams falls contentedly asleep with the aid of a sleeping pill.

In the next few days many activities prepare Mr. Williams for his surgery. A nurse is involved with

Mr. Williams 24 hours around the clock. She carries out the d octor’s orders and instructs Mr. Williams on what he can expect pre- and postoperatively.

The MLT draws Mr. Williams’ blood often to monitor his blood count and to type and cross match his blood, to prepare for a transfusion which will be administered during surgery.

The dietetic technician helps Mr. Williams fill out his menu and adapt to his new diet ordered by the doctor. The dietetic technician must explain the rationale and principles of the diet and tai足 lor-make it to his situation.

Mr. Williams will be using complex machinery to monitor his surgical condition. The biomedical e le ctro n ics tech n icia n checks and m aintains the performance quality of the equipment be足 forehand.

April 10 5:30 a.m.

A nurse awakens Mr. Williams and asks him to take a phisohex shower.

6:00 a.m.

The nurse administers several medications to Mr. Williams and tells him that someone will come and take him to surgery in about an hour.

7:00 a.m.

Mr. Williams is taken to surgery and connected to an EKG monitor in the operating room, A radial artery pressure line and a venous pressure line are inserted in Mr. Williams’ wrist and neck. The anesthesiologist starts an IV and puts Mr. Wil­ liams asleep. A physician’s assistant inserts a foley catheter and the patient is scrubbed and draped.

8:00 a.m.

The surgery begins. One team removes a vein from Mr. Williams' leg while another opens his chest. The heart surgeon connects Mr. Williams to the heart pump and uses the vein from his leg to by-pass the clogged portions of arteries lead­ ing out of Mr. Williams’ heart.

The transition from the pump back to Mr. Wil­ liams' own heart is a delicate procedure, but the heart team accomplishes it smoothly.

Noon Mr. Williams is taken to the recovery room where his condition is monitored every fifteen minutes.

After about an hour, Mr. Williams is at least par­ tially awake.

2:00 p.m.

Mr. Williams is taken to the cardio-thoracic care unit where he is greeted by his wife and his vital fun ctio n s are m onitored very carefully by the nursing staff.

The Next Four Days The Cardio-thoracic care unit is an intensive care unit specifically designed fo r cardiac surgical patients and other patients requiring chest sur足 gery. It is here that Mr. Williams spends the next

A respiratory therapist places him on a ventilator to maintain his respiratory functions until he can breathe adequately on his own. Nurses connect him to EKG monitors that read out at the nursing station as well as in Mr. Williams’ room.

As Mr. Williams begins to regain his strength, a respiratory therapist gives him intermittent posi­ tive pressure breathing (IPPE) treatments. This helps Mr. Williams to keep his lungs expanded and prevents them from collapsing or developing pneumonia after surgery.

April 14-24 After four days in CTCU, Mr. Williams is ready for the step down unit — 2-West. He stays here for about ten days, gaining strength daily. His daily routine includes short walks on the hospital floor, regular EKG readings, and careful nursing obser­ vation and care.

In this period, all of the health care team are help­ ing Mr. Williams adjust to the new lifestyle he must learn. His diet, work, and his attitude toward life will be different from this point on.

Mr. W illiam s leaves the hospital th a n kfu l and renewed, even though he must still rest at home for another six months before he can resume work or normal activity Martin Williams leaves the hospital with a new outlook on his own health and how he will live in the future. He is a different person

The health care team has made an immeasurable contribution to Mr. Williams’ life. A cooperative team effort of many people working together has resulted in the rejuvenation of a human life. Every graduate of Kettering College participates in this process, each playing an integral role and mak­ ing a unique contribution as a team member, as a link in the chain of service.

You reach over to turn the alarm o ff and th in k "J u s t a few m inutes more.’’ At 6:30 you look at the clock again. You spring out of the bed and a shiver runs up your spine as your feet hit the cold floor. You run to grab your towel, washcloth and soap and disap­ pear to the restroom, only to find that your favor­ ite shower is in use. You decide you didn’t have time for a shower anyway. You tip toe back into your room, trying not to wake your roommate when you stumble over the popcorn popper left from last night. Your roommate groans and turns to the other side. You run to the dirty laundry bas­ ket to find the uniform that you forgot to wash last night. Convincing yourself it looks okay you put it on. Gathering all your books and knowledge from

staying up until two o ’clock last night you head for class. As you wait patiently for the elevator you decide to run for the steps. As you swing open the door to the class you find you have just interrupted the devotions. Hoping few heard or saw you enter, you quietly find your chair and sit down realizing you’ve got the wrong books.

A fte r classes you go back to yo ur room to catch up on your sleep, grab a bite to eat or watch the soap operas on TV. After a couple of months in the college dorm, you get into the swing of the college activities. If you need Cheryl Thompson, she’s on the phone, Melissa Walton is watching TV or Merry Sue Boggs is still trying to sleep in the laundry room. Even though we all have crazy schedules and sometimes they con­ flict, life in the dorm will not be forgotten.

CofKtiCj W ith/ Commuters at KCMA find themselves rising early to meet the ir morning schedules. Some come as far as thirty miles. Many parents have to drop off their young children at the baby sitters’ before coming to school; others are just lucky enough to get themselves here. If you asked a commuter how long it takes for him to arrive at KCMA, he would probably answer like this. “ Well, at eight o ’clock when there is a lot of traffic about 25 minutes, 35 minutes in snow and slow traffic, 20 minutes with moderate traffic, 10-15 minutes if you catch all the green lights and you are running a little late.” Some commuters would say getting to school is not the problem; it’s finding a parking space when you arrive.

In between classes the com­ m u ters can be fo u n d in the library studying, in the cafete­ ria eating, in the lobby watch­ ing soap operas, or hiding out in the restroom. Most commut­ ers schedule their classes as close together as possible, so time spent at the college is as short as possible.

By midday most commuters are traveling the area streets and highways in what may be their only few minutes of relax­ ation in a day. Upon arriving home they have a number of d o m e s tic d u tie s w h ic h may include preparing dinner, car­ ing for kids, or cleaning house before beginning their studies for the next day.

Friday at last; the end of the week .. . full halls . . . a jammed tunnel . . . early classes . . . groans .. . assembly time. “ Think I’ll skip this assembly,” an individual voice floats up from among the mill­ ing students. “ What, and pay five bucks?” others answer back. “ Oh well, guess I’ll endure another one.” “ I’m so glad Friday’s here,” a tired body sings a famil­ iar song. “ Just think, a couple more hours then — home, a hot tub, and a bed,” others nod in agreement. 2:20 p.m. A student wanders into the lo b by, fu tile ly c h e c k in g h er m a ilb o x. Hope against hope, well maybe it’s not in yet. “ Is the mail in?” she inquires. “ Y es,” several voices answer back. “ No, please say no,” she pleads.

Bonkers! She heads toward an empty chair with just enough energy to reach it. “ I hope nobody's sitting here,” "B ob was,” someone offers, “ but I don’t think he’s coming back.” “ Good, think I’ll ju s t prop up my fee t, lay my head back and relax.” “ Before you get yourself too com fortable,” a voice inserts itself, “ let’s clean the room. You dust and sweep, I’ll wash the clothes.”

Several peo­ ple d rift into a small g roup and laugh and talk softly together. The gam e ends.

"W h a t tim e is it?” a nother asks. Nine o ’clo ck, “ defi­ nitely tim e fo r s le e p ,” som ebody replies. G oodnights are called. People d rift away gradually. Lobby lights are dim m ed. S ilence settles around like a blanket.

You skip breakfast and in class your stomach is growling, so you crumple some paper or clear your throat to cover up the noises. By now it’s lunch time, the line is long, so you decide to go out to McDonald’s, but as you head towards the door all you have is an I.D. card. So you stick it out with a Vegeburger.

After getting through the long line, and finding a seat, your watch tells you it’s time for your next class. Down the hall you run, with one arm full of books, and the other with a soggy Veggy, trying to stuff it in your mouth. Meal time should be a time everyone enjoys, whether in the conven­ ience of the cafeteria, snack shop, or your local hamburger hangout. It’s a time to forget studies, at least for the next 30 minutes. For those of us who don’t like going out, or don’t have time to, they can prepare favorite meals in the kitchen in the residence hall, and let the aroma of a good homecooked meal float in the air.

CB/UBLY “ Well what are they going to make us sit through today, I wonder?” Ever heard this during the long trek down the tunnel from KCMA to the hospital auditorium on any given Friday morning?

Then you overhear (when the program is underway): “ Wow, I’m sure glad I didn’t skip this one!”

The year’s assemblies consisted mostly of programs presented by the various instructional departments here at KCMA with a few special guest appearances and programs by the Student Association.

Some of the most popular programs include: The BMET production on “ safety” and “ what a BMET is” with a special appearance by “ The Great Pumpkin,” the Respiratory Therapy antics starring “ Baba Wawa” and “ Two wild and crazy guys,” and of course the Bake Sale Auction is always a hit whenever Dean Pratt dons his chef’s hat.

“ This was truly a special week for me,” said Dr. Bailey Gillespie, the speaker for the 1978-79 Week of Spiritual Emphasis at KCMA. Dr. Gillespie stated he was happy to meet many of the students here during the daily assemblies. A very special time for KCMA students was in store when Dr. Gillespie met in the lobby each evening to talk and sing adding a special dimension to this Week of Spiritual Emphasis.

W hat about — that nasty old Xerox m achine that likes to g obble your nickels and then print some ugly blob that d o e sn ’t resem ble at all the material you firs t started to copy.

C horale is an elective course, and probably the only class not required fo r graduation. M ost people d o n ’t know about it, and usually some recruiting needs to be done to get a variety of d iffe r­ ent voices needed. P icnic held at John Bryan State Park. “ Yeah, but I th in k th e re w e re n ’t enough activities,” said Wayne Mattheson, Captain of the losing (but happy) base b all team . All present will admit that our S.A. pulled out all the stops to sat­ isfy the ferocious appetites of the students that descended upon the glades and grasses of the park that afternoon in Sep­ tember.

Other goings on of the after­ noon included hiking (and get­ ting lost along the way), hot dog cookery, frisbee tossing, and of course, a lot of sideline observation.

FRIDAY, OCT. 20: We finally got here. I never thought I’d straighten out after riding in the back seat of the co lle g e van between two sacks of food, plus, finding this place was a miracle. We passed the entrance twice out on the main road, and then those dirt roads. At night no less.

But once we got here, the food was good.

There was a lot of it too. Then to the cabins.

Yuk! Dusty mattresses, old sneakers, spider webs, the real outdoors feeling. After blowing the dust away, I found a little shelf for my clothes and toothbrushes.

SATURDAY, OCT. 21: Those who got up early took the advantage of the hot shower which later turned to just a few drops, due to the loss of water pressure. But that didn’t stop Kevin Van Allen and Dan Glanton, who just headed towards the pool and took an early morning dip which “ was just as good as a shower” they said. We started the day with a big breakfast, and towards midmorning Donald Martin led us in a few m om ents of m editation and short devotion. Then everyone just seemed to head toward the woods, full of energy, ready to con­ quer the mountains, explore outdoors, or just have fun. Within a few hours, everyone was ready to eat again, after spending their energy.

After having rested a while, volleyball became the popular activity for the afternoon. Night came quickly, and the call for chow was made.

The activity for the evening featured Bill Cosby and Sidney P oitie r in the film ‘ ‘ L e t’s Do it A g a in ” . We were then e nte rta in ed by Ms. Short, a play by Teresa Mcneily, daughter of Roger Mcneily.

E veryone helped h im se lf to ice cream , bananas, and made their own banana splits.

Well, back to the old cabins to get some sleep.

SUNDAY, OCT. 22: Is it breakfast already? Bet­ ter get up and start packing before the van leaves. I don’t want to go back to school yet.

But it was fun while it lasted. I’ll look forward to coming back next year. Hey that was a lot of fun.

The night began with everybody gathering in the Brodies’ barn. Creatures of all kinds, shapes, and sizes were present. First came the costume judging by our host, Mr. Brodie. Second, the pumpkin carving contest and the apple bobbing followed with Sharon Rickett almost becoming the bobbing apple. D uring this m edley apple cider and doughnuts were being distributed by some of our KAGA JACMAD members. We then stumbled and picked our way out to the bonfire.

Where we roasted our fingers instead of marsh­ mallows and listened to some not-so-scary ghost stories. A fterw ards everybody fo r a peaceful night of sleep, except of course . . . The Great Pumpkin.

November first brought sleepy-eyed girls wide awake when they tossed back their curtains. For stenciled on the windows were the words “ The Great Pumpkin Was Here.” To prove his good­ ness, individually typed messages with cookies were left outside each window. Apparently G.P. wanted to leave a good impression, for a huge banner proclaiming that his presence had graced the school was hanging over the main school entrance greeting the early comers.

In the early fall before the nights end early you can get into a football gam e or tw o played across from Manderly. Late spring and early sum m er bring out softball bats and gloves and the end o f April team s are form ed that play at S pring Valley Academ y Ball F ie ld . D u rin g th e w in te r m o n th s hockey becam e a fa vo rite w ith some of o u r students and th e re was at least one game between the departm ents of N ursing and B iom edical E le ctro n ­ ics. The BMETS played th e ir hearts out to beat the Nurses 7-6.

Heat — thirst — drink, an unbreakable chain. On Thursday June 14 this cycle went to work on KCMA students and faculty.

This year everybody had a chance to tam e the beast. R e p u ta b ly “ The W orld’s Largest, highest, and fastest roller coaster.” As a rule Munchkins 5'4" and under (that means you Jay Voytko) are not allowed on, however I ’ m sure th a t q u ite a few slip p e d through.

For those who frequent amusement parks you know all it amounts to is one ride after another and in between the rides you walk to : 1) dry off 2) regain your sense of balance 3) head to the nearest bathroom 4) hope desperately the swirling contents in your stomach stay there.

Those not brave enough for the rides w ill p ro b a b ly be fou n d a ro un d the games section, spending their quarters and fifty cent pieces for dogs, dino­ saurs, dishes and whatever they can dream up.

Tow ard e ven in g K in g ’s Island favored us with an aerial show. To start it off a huge balloon was filled with hot air and released. Then three stu n t pilots did b re a th ta kin g loops, rode upside down, chased each other, and finally released a parachuter before fly­ ing off into the setting sun.

To finish the day off a fireworks show was given and King’s Island bade us a tired thank-you and good night.

Lest we fo rg e t what it’s taken to get to this day, many of us started at K ettering righ t from high school, some taking a program in three years, and others in tw o years Some of us took little by little over many years to finish, while others with d iffe re n t o c cu p a tio n s o r b a ck­ g rounds have come to get a degree here to obtain a nother goal.

Many of us found ourselves very busy to finish up our tests and obligations, and to prepare fo r graduation activities and, the many arriving guests Not o n ly w ere the students them selves busy. The alum ni w ere plan­ ning the banquet dinner fo r T hursday night, and the reception fo r Saturday afternoon at R idgeleigh T e r­ race Friday brought tw o g ra duation rehearsals, one in th e c o lle g e gym and th e o th e r at Far H ills B a p tis t C h u rc h . D u rin g ou r m o rn in g p ra c tic e Dr B e a ve n em phasized our lack of m arching techniques, not only to the graduates, but to the fa cu lty who go thro u g h it e ve ry year O ur cla ss s p o n s o rs , Tom R o b b in s and Edith Applegate, displayed th e ir expertise at roll c a ll­ ing, and leading us in at graduation. In betw een our graduation practices, the SA surprised us w ith party sized pizzas from C assano’s to help us revive fo r our afternoon practice.

These and other comments assailed Tom Robbins’ ears on Thursday afternoons when photojournalism class gathered.

Poor T.R., he had no idea when taking on our partic­ ular class of eager, would-be photographers of the frustration and despair he was soon to encounter.

Actually we fooled him, well enough for a white that is.

We sailed right through first semester improving the quality (?) of our pictures turning everything out almost nearly on schedule.

Second semester, however, brought some tangles in our little web of contentment. Now we had to write the story behind the picture, draw up a layout, and learn to crop pictures. Doubt began to assail us and our asser­ tiveness seemed to desert us. Deadlines came and went and headaches built into nasty tempers. Through it all T.R. kept throwing at us the one statement that seemed to build itself into our motto, ‘‘Tell the story!

Each picture, each event,” he would say, “ has a story behind — tell it — don’t make a mountain out of a molehill.”

Taking pictures has not been bad, but we’ve had our embarrassing moments. Take the incident now of Diane. She had shot a whole roll of Mark and when upon opening the camera to remove the film, discov­ ered the mere fact that no film existed. Funny? Not to Diane, she was the one who had to reshoot the pic­ tures, this time with film. Then there was the time when Kay shot some hockey pictures and after developing the film produced a length of 20 exposures completely blank. Had she left the lens cap on? The mystery remains. We could entertain you with more of these same type of stories but permit us to spare ourselves embarrassment.

For better or for worse this is your yearbook — but don’t think of it as a yearbook. Instead when you are turning the pages and certain faces and events leap out at you bringing back memories that start smiles, tears, or even scowls on your faces, we’d like to think that somewhere in your brain a switch has clicked on summoning back a forgotten scene between friends.

Please remember that we did our utmost for you and that we are human and all humans make mistakes, and if our correcting fluid and erasers have missed some — forgive us.
