Academics

Biomedical Electronics Technology Kettering College of Medical A rts’ newest curriculum is biom edical electronics tech ­ nology. Mr. Stanley Applegate is the instructor for the biomedical technology courses.

Modern m edicine’s growing dependence upon instrum ents has caused a need for this new type of allied health profession. The technician’s responsibilities include installing, calibrating, testing, and m aintaining all the medical equipm ent th at is used in a hospital

for research and diagnosis.

A student in this curriculum will study electricity, electronics, and other related courses. Testing circuits, figuring resistances, and measuring voltages are all part of being a biom edical electronics technology student.

There are presently four students taking this electronics course, however, this num ber is sure to grow in the future.

Nurses Try Drama

Witch doctor Sheila Boger drives out evil spirits from Kent Simmons.

Skits portraying the history of nursing were perform ed as a yearly tradition by th e firstyear basic patient care students on O ctober 6 in the college gym.

The class of 80 was divided into four groups of 20 students; each group was assigned to teach its m aterial in an original fashion and distribute sum m ary sheets to th e student audience.

From th e dawn o f civilization to Florence Nightengale was the span of tim e covered by the first group. Under th e leadership of Darlene Grice this group conveyed its infor­ m ation through a series of hum orous skits.

In one skit Sheila Boger perform ed a w itch d o c to r’s dance to drive evil spirits o u t of her suffering fellow tribesm an. Several patients were at th e m ercy of “ Dr. Ted F o rd ” and “ Bewildered Nurse Des Jardins.” The doctor relieved one p a tie n t’s agony by rem oving a whole chicken from his stom ach.

The second group, led by Mike Laycox, presented the tim e from Florence Nightengale to 1900. Peg Lindem an portrayed Florence in a take-off of the television series “ This Is Your Life.” Various figures from Miss Nightengale’s past were brought to life. Advertisem ents for coffins and plung-o-matics (the latest cathartic on the m arket) added spice to th e program.

Mike Laycox caused the audience to roar w ith laughter when he came out dressed as Miss Vaughn and b o th of his ballons “ busted.”

R obert Rowe led the third group, which represented the tim e from 1900 to World War IL The skit started w ith a bewildered student of the present asking Mike Powers, as Miss Vaughn, for additional help in finding infor­ m ation on their tim e period. Students repre­ senting Mrs. M erickel and Miss H oyt were called in for assistance. A t the end of th e skit a panel of three nurses com peted fo r “ Nurse for the D ay.” Each participant related, with sobbing and hysteria, the hardships o f her career, b u t instead o f sym pathizing, th e audi­ ence laughed at their amusing predicam ents.

Kaye Stevenson led the fo u rth group in pre­ senting the tim e from World War II to the present day. This skit, entitled “ Take Two Aspirin and Call Me in the M orning,” took place in a m odern hom e. Four generations 7

were represented by a great grandm other, a grandm other, a m other, and a child. Each of the m others told about nursing in her day. The future was represented by “ Supernurse,” Peggy Wilson, who came with her com puter to treat the ill m other. The doctor was called for advice and the com puter finally diagnosed the case as a headache.

Kaye Stevenson, who played the part of the com puter, summ ed up the feeling of all participants when she said, “ I’m glad it’s over b ut it was fun while it lasted. By th e way, where can I get a plung-o-matic?”

The Man in the White Coat: Dr. Hewes A natom y. The very w ord strikes fear in the hearts of Freshm en after m ore seasoned stu ­ dents describe one of th e m ajor hurdles in the path to their chosen career. Invariably as­ sociated w ith the word anatom y are n o te­ books, lab coats, correct spelling, drawings, cadavers and form aldehyde, and the form id­ able figure in th e w hite coat, Dr. Gordon Hewes. Those who get to know th e man inside the white coat find th a t the chairm an of the Biological Sciences D epartm ent is basically a warm hum an being and a dedicated teacher.

Dr. Hewes was brought up near Lake Cham plain, on the New Y ork-V erm ont border.

He w ent to a parochial high school, then a t­ tended college briefly before going to work for one of General M otors Divisions as an assistant to the chief engineer. A fter a snow skiing accident, in which he to re several liga­ m ents and muscles, he w ent to Columbia Union College in Washington D.C. where he became the assistant dean of men. While at CUC he m ajored in biology and was soon asked to teach cat anatom y to a class of nurses. He enjoyed this and a t the same tim e felt impressed by the need for good teachers in the field of science, so he dedicated him ­

self to a teaching career. Later he became a laboratory assistant in zoology for the biology departm ent.

Dr. Hewes received his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees at the University of M aryland where he specialized in anatom y. As a graduate as­ sistant he taught classes for the zoology de­ partm ent and later became an instructor in anatom y while pursuing a doctorate.

Dr. Hewes has taught at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltim ore, Loma Linda University in California, and West Virginia University. The courses he taught in these schools were hum an gross anatom y, m icro-anatom y, em bryology, cytology, and neurological anatom y.

Presently Dr. Hewes lives on Mad River Road w ith his wife, who is an elem entary school teacher, and his daughter. He has two sons away in college. A nother im portant m em ­ ber of the Hewes household is a Siamese cat.

While acquainting you w ith his cat, Dr. Hewes likes to recall his traum atic introduc­ tion to the cat, which was given to his children while he was away on a trip. When his family m et him at the airport, they introduced him to the new family m em ber. During the in tro ­ duction, a large plane took off and the terri­ fied cat tried to escape. U nfortunately, Dr. Hewes was in the escape route and he wound up with scratched and bleeding face and hands and a to rn shirt. One m ight expect such a cat 11

to end up in the anatom y lab, but Dr. Hewes seems to have forgiven the Cat and now , like M ary’s proverbial lam b, everywhere Dr. Hewes goes, the cat sure tries to follow.

Dr. Hewes has taught anatom y and physi­ ology a t KCMA since the school opened in 1967, and every year a hundred or so students make it past this hurdle. Some look back on the course w ith a sense of relief, some with pride, some w ith regret, some w ith joy, b ut none will soon forget the man in the w hite lab coat who taught anatom y.

Week of Religion Pastor James H. M elancon conducted the fall “ Religion in Life W eek” O ctober 2-6. “ Pastor Jim ,” as he likes to be called, posses­ ses the rare ability of holding everyone’s a tte n ­ tion. The twirling m icrophone cord, experi­ ences galore, audience participation, and a great deal of enthusiasm m ade assembly w orth attending. But Elder Melancon did m ore than just gain the a tten tio n of the audience, he conveyed w hat positive Christian living is all about.

Elder Melancon has been a pastor in Watts.

He is currently a professor in the D epartm ent of Religion at U nion College, Lincoln, Nebraska. He is working on his doctorate at Iowa University.

Assemblies Everything from floods to w om en’s libera­ tion was dealt w ith in assembly programs during the first sem ester. Through speakers, slides, films, and discussions the students were involved in ecology, art, politics, the FBI, and the controversial issue of w om en’s lib.

In the first assembly E dith Lewis, from Miami Conservancy D istrict, showed slides th a t depicted the disastrous results of D ay to n ’s fam ous 1913 flood. She also explained the system of dams now installed to prevent future floods.

Bruce Evans from the D ayton A rt Institute talked about urban art. This art is painted on the drab walls of buildings and has already been introduced in th e D ayton area. Mr. Evans showed slides of bright colors and mod designs th at can be seen on the walls of dif­ ferent buildings when traveling dow n some of D ay to n ’s streets and highways.

Shortly before the N ational elections, tw o politicians visited KCMA. Paul Leonard, a Dem ocratic prosecutor, gave a speech on his proposed criminal reform s as part of his campaign for the state legislature. The follow ­ ing week Republican Congressman Charles Whalen, incum bent candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives, spoke in assem-

bly and conducted a question-and-answer period. Both candidates won their respective campaigns.

Reverand D uddington visited KCMA on Novem ber 10 and discussed body language.

To set the m ood, he had everyone take part in several body language exercises. N atural inhibitions produced ripples of laughter when the students were asked to touch another person.

The FBI was the subject Bob Carmichael discussed at the sixth assembly. He outlined the FB I’s responsibilities and explained how th e com m unity could help them find fugitives from the law.

A very lively and controversial assembly to o k place on D ecem ber 8. Jean Hannob and tw o other wom en “ libbers” gave their views on life as a w om an and proposed n u ­ m erous changes to the role of th e wom an.

Many men and wom en becam e involved in the question-and-answ er period th a t follow ed their talk. Several people appeared to attack the W omen’s Lib M ovement through the questions th ey asked, some being less subtle th an others.

Because of their variety, first semester assemblies hopefully contributed som ething to everyone.

Imagine — walking into assembly em ptyhanded and walking out w ith a $100 bill— Debi Baldwin did! On November 3, Mr. Roger McNeily served as m aster of cerem onies for the Student A ssociation’s version of “ L e t’s Make a Deal.” Among the prizes given away were bed pans, cuff links, watches, a rubber doll and a “ mini bike.” Dan and Joann Rea won clock radios. The first prize given away was a television set to Bert A nderson in ex­ change for a picture o f his grandm other.

Senate members and Student Association officers were the hostesses. Echo Merickel and Kelly Eytcheson were n o t quite as lucky as some; they won m atching hamsters.

Senate Election The Student Association elected eight new Senate m em bers on Septem ber 29 during the Friday assembly. The new senators for the 1972-73 school year are Bert Anderson, second-year respiratory therapy; Tom Hamer, first-year general education; Bradley Hill, firstyear respiratory therapy; Ralph Kinder, firstyear biomedical electronics technology; Daryl Pettis, second-year general education; Bonnie Pierce, first-year respiratory therapy; and Debbie Shawver, second-year nursing.

Jane Skinner was elected to be th e new social secretary for the S tudent Association, replacing Lynn H arruff who no longer attends KCMA. Senators are to represent the ideas and reﾂｭ quests of a specified group of students. They m eet tw ice a m onth. Students, faculty, and their friends attended the Student Association camping trip at Camp Mohaven on November 10-12 for a weekend of fun and relaxation. T hroughout th e rainy Friday evening, people slowly made their way along the winding country roads to the camp.

Upon arriving, everyone enjoyed a good supper and then moved their belongings into th e un­ heated cabins to which they had been assigned.

Saturday morning a group gathered around the fireplace to sing songs and participate in a discussion led by Mr. McNeily. During the afternoon, individual groups hiked along the wooded paths around the area, and th e more adventurous campers w ent canoeing in the swift and m uddy M ohican River.

the pool area was opened for those who were courageous enough to swim in the chilling w ater. Among those daring to dive in were Janet Meyer, Jane Cole, Linda Wilson, Scott McNeily, Dan Acuff, Nancy K lotz, and Mike Merickel. Mr. Jim Greg, instructor of respira­ tory therapy, was unexpectedly escorted to the pool and after a vigorous struggle, was finally tossed into the water.

The evening ended w ith a cartoon strip and two movies entitled: “ 5000 Fingers of Dr. T ” and “ Finnian’s R ainbow .” Between the two features everyone had banana splits. The cold w eather forced m any of the campers o u t of their unheated cabins to the warm fire a t the lodge for the night. Some of the guys, seem­ ingly unbothered by the cold, spent the w eek­ end at the polar bear camp.

After breakfast the next m orning, horse­ back riding, hiking, and ping pong com pleted the w eekend’s activities. Then everyone re­ turned to K ettering for another busy week at school.

Tennis Mr. Lynn Foil takes a swing.

With tennis courts ju st outside the dorm i­ to ry windows, m any tennis enthusiasts were o u t on th e courts at the beginning of the school year. Richard Bonjour, physical educa­ tion instructor, consequently initiated the idea of a tennis to u rnam ent, which soon aroused the interest of m any players. After the official list of partners was posted, the best team appeared to be Mr. Bonjour and Dennis Johnson. However, they lost their first three m atches and it began to look like a well balanced tournam ent.

The games proceeded very slowly. Because of conflicting class schedules, it was difficult to set up a m atch. Then it rained nearly every day in O ctober. When Dr. Van Horne and Dave M artin w ent into the hospital for surgery, two team s were elim inated. Finally the tournam ent faded into oblivion w ith th e onset of cold weather. The only undefeated duo at the end was Ward Childers and K ent Spuehler.

Dorm Life The dorm at KCMA is a place of contrasting scenes and m oods. During pressure-filled test tim es students become serious and feel over足 whelmed and defeated by their class loads.

Even though they have doubts about their success, all seem to pull through. When the students are caught up in their studies, their moods are much happier and carefree.

On week nights, lights burn far into the night. Someone is always studying for a test or catching up on his studies. Groans accom 足 pany sounds of alarm clocks th at go off at all hours of the night to awaken students who have to cram before m orning classes.

On weekends when activity hits a low, energetic students initiate their own projects.

cream all over the door knobs. Also, on a weekend date it isn’t unusual to hear a couple reciting the bones of the body in review for Dr. Hewes’ anatom y class.

The only barrier present in the dorm is the “ sex d o o r” which divides the m en’s and w om en’s sides of the dorm .

A typical scene in the evening on the girls side of the dorm is som eone in curlers sitting on the floor talking on th e phone. Doors are open and inside the room s girls are gathered studying or gossiping. Here and there T V ’s,

radios, and stereos add their tones to th e re­ laxed atm osphere.

Some usual happenings for the guys are late night pool games and Rook. Som etim es the bouncing sounds of tennis balls can be heard as the guys pepper each other in friendly fights.

The lobby is always open for anyone who wants to watch television or talk. The general atm osphere around the dorm is one of friend­ liness and happiness.
