Capping Ceremony The sixth annual capping service was held January 14 in the Kettering Seventh-day Adventist Church. Sixty-seven freshman nurs足 ing students received recognition for com plet足 ing the initial phase of their preparation for the nursing profession. Miss Alice Smith, di足 rector of Andrews University Departm ent of Nursing, was the keynote speaker. Following her presentation the Deaton Trio sang. After the students received their caps or shoulder emblems, Miss Anna May Vaughan conducted the traditional candle-lighting service and led the Florence Nightingale pledge.

Week of Spiritual Emphasis The spring Week of Spiritual Emphasis, February 19 to 23, focused on some practical aspects of Christianity and personal value systems. Programs for the week included guest speakers and small group discussions.

Reverend Frank Roughton, actor and pro­ ducer of Biblical drama, began the week in a unique way. After Dr. Winton Beaven intro­ duced the program, Reverend Roughton startled the audience by suddenly appearing on the empty stage. Dressed in the garb of Biblical times, he immediately had the audi­ ence’s attention as he proceeded to the center of the stage with a dramatic air of solemness.

Through monologue and dramatization he presented his emotionally charged interpreta­ tion of “ The Sermon on the M ount” in its entirety. Many students had open books on their laps, but most eyes seemed glued to the figure on the stage throughout the dramatic presentation.

Dr. Winton H. Beaven duet. Winton Beaven, the speaker of the morn­ ing, informally presented various approaches to value systems and Christian Ethic. He con­ cluded by saying th at the ultimate value sys­ tem is taught by Christ and goes beyond words to deeds. It relates to how we treat everyone in every situation.

On Friday, Mr. Roger McNeily led the assembly with a vocal solo. He was followed

by Pastor Don Bostian, the guest speaker.

Elder Bostian spoke about several aspects of love, especially in relationship to law. He pointed out the danger of seeing love and law as opposites and contended that they cannot be because they come from the same author.

He also discussed the misconception th at peo­ ple have an inborn instinctual love and that one can love and then do as he pleases.

Formal meetings were not held on Tuesday and Thursday. On those days students were encouraged, though not required, to meet with members of the faculty for small group discussions centering on value systems. One student said th at she felt the discussions gave her a chance to voice her views and opinions.

Mr. Lynn Foil reported, “ Though few people showed up, I think it was a stimulating ex­ perience.” Another student summed up the week by saying, “ I enjoyed the new way Religion Week was presented. I found it both interesting and helpful.”

Bowling

A bowling league of four teams, organized

by Peggy Mclntire, bowled three games every Tuesday night at the Capri Lanes for com­ petition and enjoyment. Many students partici­ pated throughout the year as regular members and substitutes. Gymnastics The KCMA Gymnastics Team put on an informal, enthusiastic show March 31 in the college gymnasium to show the team ’s ac­ complishments this year.

The events of the show, like a three-ring circus, were constantly moving. Several pyr­ amids were performed involving stunts such as handstands, knee-shoulder stands, three highs, and upper arm-to-arms.

In the first part of the program Teresa McNeily, the team ’s little mascot, broke her arm while doing a flip. All the pyramids had to be reconstructed, which involved stunts that had never been practiced before!

Carole Morgan did a routine on the uneven bars. Denny Woodard, Pat Michaelis, and Myron Michaelis performed on the trampoline, with Pat and Myron occasionally falling through the springs while clowning around.

Janice Keniston and Lisa Sullivan presented free-exercise routines involving a variety of tumbling stunts. All the girls on the team did

in a high arm-to-arm.

a synchronized routine. Mr. Richard Bonjour and Carja Boyer and Carole and Myron per­ formed doubles routines. Other events in the show were vaulting, tumbling, and pitching.

The members of the gymnastic team en­ joyed themselves during the show, not letting anything dampen their spirits. The team seemed to enjoy performing as much as the audience did watching.

Since this is Mr. Bonjour’s last year at KCMA, the gymnastic team presented him with a statue of a couple doing a high hand-tohand. Mrs. Bonjour was given five red roses representing the five years that the Bonjour family had been a part of KCMA. —Lisa Sullivan 13

People with Rhythm The KCMA chorale, under the direction of Mr. Roger McNeily, was represented this year by 23 members. The choir performed in Worthington, Ohio, with the gymnastic team, and also contributed to the religious atmosﾂｭ phere of the Kettering Seventh-day Adventist Church. A home concert on April 28 comﾂｭ pleted a year of enjoyment for all who participated. 窶年ancy Klotz

On the evening of April 14, the Student Association hosted a formal dinner in the Golden Room of Henrici’s. A musical group, Suncast, provided folk and rock tunes through­ out the dinner hour. After the meal Scott McNeily, former S.A. president, announced the Student Association officers for 1973-74.

The evening ended with a movie entitled “ The Red Tent,” which featured the survival experiences of an Arctic exploration.

“The Importance of Being Earnest” was presented in April by the Freshman Eng­ lish section on drama production. The Oscar Wilde play was performed in a theater-in-theround built on the stage of KCMA’s gymna­ sium. Student directors Janet Gray and Terry Petersen brought the Victorian era to life again with realistic costumes and stage settings.

Assemblies The Shorb Brothers opened the second semester assembly programs with an hour of gospel music.

On January 26, Laverne and Randy, from the Glamour modeling and hair styling agency, demonstrated popular haircuts and hair styles and gave advice on grooming. Several students volunteered to have their hair cut or styled during the program.

Mr. Roger McNeily talked on rock music and its effects during the assembly program on February 9.

On March 23, Dr. Marlowe Schaffner, presi­ dent of the medical center, explained the Sharleen Snowden and John Serle get their finances and future plans for both the hospital ^ia*r styled, and college.

Elder Lowell Boch, associate secretary of the General Conference of Seventh-day Ad­ ventists, spoke on missions on March 30.

To climax Black History Week, a slide lec­ ture on “ The Missing American” was pre­ sented on February 16. Among the list of black contributions to America, we discovered that a black man invented the stoplight.

On Friday the thirteenth of April, the. gymnastic team and college chorale performed in the gymnasium. Following their program the Student Association elected officers.

The assembly on April 20 introduced the drama class which put on a one-act play, “ Over the Teacups.” It starred Sheila Boger, Linda Richardson has her hair trimmed.

The joy of making beds!!

Visiting the Sick Most of the professional programs at KCMA use off-campus facilities as part of their clinical laboratory. The nursing department, for ex­ ample, takes the seniors to Children’s Medical Center and the Veteran’s Administration Hos­ pital. The program is designed to provide the students with an in-depth learning experience in the fields of psychiatric nursing and the nursing of acutely and chronically ill children.

The program also assists the students in be­ coming familiar with other hospital environ­ ments and their personnel.

Children’s Medical Center, a pediatric hos­ pital, is a four-story building with nearly 300 beds. Its facilities provide learning and teach­ ing opportunities with children of all ages and with a variety of illnesses.

A day at Children’s Medical Center begins by getting a report from the nurse in charge.

Next on the agenda is passing out breakfast trays. This is an opportune time to get ac­ quainted with the children and their parents.

After breakfast the focus is on hygiene. It is also a good time to do treatm ents such as dressing changes, irrigations, etc. Most of the children require some kind of therapy—physi­ cal therapy, respiratory therapy, and play therapy are all utilized, sometimes two and three times a day. Lunch time is next and is usually welcomed by both the patients and the students. Nap time is after lunch. This provides a time to chart and give a report to the nurse in charge. Before returning to KCMA, stu­ dents attend a post-conference which consists 22

of a movie, a lecture, or sharing the day’s experiences.

The Veteran’s Administration Hospital is the second largest veteran’s hospital in the country. It has 850 beds, 45 of which are on the psychiatric ward. On this ward, 99 percent of the patients are men of whom 30 percent are alcoholics. On the average, acute short­ term cases stay approximately three weeks.

Long-term cases are usually sent to the Chillicothe Veteran’s Hospital.

At the VA Hospital students first become oriented to the unit and acquainted with the staff. Each student is assigned a patient with whom to establish rapport and to work to-

ward a trusting relationship. Breakfast is early and the doctors then make their rounds.

Each nursing student participates actively or passively with a patient in his treatm ents such as recreational therapy, occupational therapy, and group therapy. Opportunities are provided to talk with the psychiatrist, sociologist, and staff to learn more about the assigned patient.

Lunch is at 11 a.m. and post-conference is at noon. No physical nursing care is involved, however the VA provides a therapeutic atmos­ phere for interactions from which students learn how to deal more effectively with the feelings of others and themselves.

Who’s Who Six students of KCMA have been named for listing^the 1973 edition of Who’s Who Am ong Students in American Junior Colleges. They are Joyce Johnston, Glenda Janney, Pia Kanistros, Scott McNeily, Mike Merickel, and Mike Tachenko.

Selection was made by faculty members, taking into consideration the student’s scholar­ ship, participation and leadership in academic and extracurricular affairs, citizenship, service to the school, and potential for the future.

Mrs. Glenda Janney is in her second year of nursing. She graduated from DeWitt High School, DeWitt, Nebraska. Later she attended St. Luke’s School of Nursing, Chicago, Illinois.

Joyce Johnston, a second-year nursing stu­ dent, graduated from Washington Township High School, Centerville, Ohio.

Another second-year nursing student, Pia Kanistros, graduated from Meadowdale High School, Dayton, Ohio, where she was a mem­ ber of the student counsel. She also attended Kent State University in 1970. While here at KCMA she has been vice-president of the Student Association.

Scott McNeily, a second-year respiratory therapy student, graduated from Spring Valley Academy, Centerville, Ohio, in 1972. He has been on the Dean’s List here at KCMA and president of the Student Association.

Mike Merickel, a senior nursing student, graduated in 1971 from Spring Valley Ac­ ademy, Centerville, Ohio. Mike has been on the Dean’s List at KCMA. Also a senior nursing student, Michael Tachenko, graduated from Waupaun Sr. High School, Waupaum, Wisconsin, in 1968. From 1969-71 he attended Union College in Lincoln, Nebraska. The fifth KCMA graduation began promptly at 8 p.m., May 4, when the faculty and graduates marched down the stone aisles of the Kettering Seventh-day Adventist Church.

After Jodi Slonaker offered the invocation and Glenda Janney and Kent Spuehler read the scripture, Dan Rea sang “ The Lord’s Prayer.”

George Akers, president of Columbia Union College, then reminded the 91 graduates that Marshall McLuhan’s statem ent “ The medium is the message” also applies to them as they commence their careers.

Commencement exercises began at 9 p.m.

Saturday night. After the processional and Kay Aldrich’s invocation, Christine Bowman soulfully rendered “ How Great Thou A rt.”

Raymond Roesch, president of the University of Dayton, outlined the ingredients of personal worth. He said that the key to personal worth (and all happiness) comes from wanting nothing for self and working for the good of

Six students graduated “ with honor” (G.P.A. above 3.5): Glenda Janney, Joyce Johnston, Pia Kanistros, Joanne Rea, Jean Stevens, and Kent Spuehler. Debbie Fuller was given the special honor of graduating “ with distinction” (G.P.A. above 3.8). This was only the second time such an honor has been earned at KCMA. This graduation was the first time there were graduates from six different professional curricula.
