Fall

This fall issue constitutes the first of four publications which will comprise the Pacemaker for 1972-73. It is a new idea and a rather experimental approach to a college yearbook.

The primary role of an annual is to freeze time. To accomplish this successfully requires inclusive coverage of the various academic and social experiences occurring throughout a schoolyear. The frequency of publication will offer immediate utilization of the annual as a ref足 erence source in addition to the traditional function of preserving memories.

Student enrollment If when you arrived at school this fall you thought that you had never seen so many new faces here before, you were absolutely right.

When Kettering College of Medical Arts opened for classes this fall, it had 30 more students than ever before.

Of the 301 students enrolled, there are 163 first-year students, 100 second-year students, and 38 special students. About half of the stu足 dent body live in the Dayton area and the other half have come from such far aw ay and exotic places as Hong Kong; Colorado; and Pataskala, Ohio. In the residence hall live 94 of the 227 women and 24 of the 74 men attending KCMA.

The student enrollment by department is nurs足 ing, 146; respiratory therapy, 37; medical office assisting, 25; radiologic technology, 14; dietetic technology, 6; environmental management, 5; b iom edical electronics technology, 5; p re足 medicine, 2; and general education, 61.

If by chance there is any truth to the rumor that there is strength in numbers, then KCMA should be in for its strongest year yet.

New staff additions In the fall of 1972, KCMA had the privilege of gaining four new instructors both in the fields of nurs足 ing and dietetics. Anna M ay Vaughan, chairman of the nursing department, stated that this is the first year for KCMA to have a complete full-time faculty. Among the four new instructors is Donna Christianson, who teaches nursing. She spent her childhood in Latin America where her parents were missionaries. She later received her Bachelor of Science degree from Loma Linda University, Loma Linda, Calif., and went on to Puerto Rico as a missionary nurse. Miss Christianson later toured Europe for her own enjoyment, and finally chose to teach at KCMA simply because she liked its friendly atmosphere and because she desired more teaching experience. In her spare time she is taking voice lessons; she plays the flute, piano, guitar, and enjoys writing.

Another new member of KCMA's faculty is Mara Velkers, teaching dietetics. Her parents were refugees from Latvia, and Miss Velkers was born in Germany. Her family later moved to the state of Washington where she attended the University of Washington and received her B.S. in dietetics.

Miss Velkers completed her internship and M.S. at Loma Linda University. In her spare time she enjoys sewing, swimming, and mountain climbing.

Lois Pratt is the third new faculty member here at KCMA, carrying the distinguished title of assistant professor of psychiatric nursing. She received her R.N. at Hurley Hospital School of Nurs­ ing in Flint, Mich., her B.S. from Andrews University, Berrien Springs, Mich., and her M.S. from Eastern Michigan University.

The last member of our new additions is Geraldine Hill, who teaches nursing. She received her R.N. from Atlantic Union College, South Lancaster, Mass., and her B.S. from W alla W alla College in Washington. She came to KCMA with her husband, who tends the grounds here at the medical center. She and her husband have four children who keep them very busy. In her spare time she sews, writes letters, and reads.

Marck Twain Riverboat Cruise

On Sept. 10 the Student Association sponsored a boat trip down the Ohio River to give stu足 dents, faculty, and friends of KCMA the oppor足 tunity to get acquainted. The double-decked, paddle-wheel boat Marck Twain left the dock at 7 p.m.

After about an hour everyone had worked up (or talked up) quite an appetite, and there was plenty of food for all aboard. P egg y Kirkman and her crew of M ary Ann Biersack, W ilma Merickle, Karen Swift, and Janet M eyer had sandwiches, salads, pop, and ice cream for everyone.

Later, a fast-moving gam e of Duck-Goose was started. Even though it was a game where all people stand up, many players ended up on the deck.

The boat turned around and headed home at 9 p.m. Then everyone settled down and started singing to guitar accompaniment.

A rtic le I : General S ection 1— N a m e : The name o f the organization shall be the Student A ssocia tion o f K etterin g College o f M e d ic a l A rts .

S ection 2— C on stitu tion and B y -L a w s : The C on stitu tion and B y-Law s should be published and distributed to members every year.

S ection 3— M e m b e rs h ip : A l l students who pay dues shall be voting members o f the Student A ssociation.

S ection 4— D u e s : The dues o f members shall be assessed fr o m the general m a tricu la tio n fee. Students taking few er than seven hours may become members by p a y in g their dues to the Student A ssocia tion treasurer; their dues shall be con­ sidered one-th ird o f the regular m a tricu la tion fee.

A rtic le I I : Assembly S ection 1— M e e tin g s : A . There shall be a regularly scheduled Student A ssocia tion meeting the firs t assembly o f each month.

B . S p e cia l meetings may be called by the president, or vice president in the absence o f the president, or by a p e titio n o f 10 percent o f the Student A ssocia tion mem bership.

C. N o tic e o f a ll meetings shall be given at least two days in advance.

D . A quorum shall consist o f 51 percent o f the members, and any issue brought to the attention o f the Student A ssocia ­ tion shall require a m a jority vote o f the members present.

Section 2 — J u ris d ic tio n : The Assem bly shall have ju r is d ic tio n as fo llo w s : A . A p p ro v e the budget.

B . E lect senators, f i l l vacant offices, and ra tify Senate ap­ pointm ents.

C. A m e n d the C on stitu tion by tw o-thirds vote o f members present.

D . Im p ea ch officers and senators.

E . M a y in itia te ideas and refer a ll o rig in a l business to the Senate. I n cases o f emergency, the president may make exceptions and have the assembly make the fin a l decision.

Business rejected by the Senate may be re-passed by a tw o-thirds vote o f members present.

A rtic le I I I : Senate Section 1 — M e m b e rs h ip : A . The Senate shall consist o f the fo llo w in g voting m em bers: 1. The vice president o f the Student A ssocia tion {ch a ir­ m a n ).

3. The socia l secretary o f the Student A ssocia tion .

B . The Student A ssocia tion president, treasurer, and p u b licity secretary shall be considered n on-voting Senate members.

Section 2 — M e e tin g s : A . A regular meeting o f the Senate shall be called at least twice a month. The meetings shall be called by the ch a ir­ man, or by the president o f the Student A ssocia tion in the absence o f the chairm an.

B . A n y unscheduled meeting may be called by the cha irm a n , the Student A ssocia tion president in the absence o f the chairm an, or by a p e titio n o f tw o-thirds m a jority o f the voting members o f the Senate.

C. A l l meetings shall be prop erly announced at least 24 hours before the meeting.

D . A q u o ru m s h a ll be a tw o -th ird s m a jo r ity o f the v o tin g members. A l l issues must be passed by a 51 percent ma­ jo r ity .

E . A n y member o f the Student A ssocia tion may attend the Senate meetings and enter the discussion, but may not vote.

F . A n y senator not attending two consecutive meetings o f the Senate or a total o f three meetings in a semester w ithout excuses deemed reasonable by the Senate, shall au tom a ti­ cally fo r fe it his office.

G. M in u te s shall be posted f o r a p eriod o f not less than a week fo llo w in g the meeting.

Section 6— Im p e a ch m e n t: Im p ea ch m en t shall be by a twothirds m a jo rity o f the Student A ssocia tion by p e titio n with the stated reason. The p e titio n shall be brought to the Senate, who in tu rn shall ca ll a Student A ssocia tion m eeting. The vote then shall be taken in the absence o f the im peached officer and must be passed by a tw o-thirds m a jority o f the members present. I n the event that an officer is im peached, he is given one week to tu rn in his resignation.
