Except for new students, everyone who has worked or studied here can remember the long, basement-level trek to the library.

With the Boonshoft Center for Medical Sciences now open, you can go from the former main entrance and reception desk to what we now call the Learning Commons in a few turns and a few steps.

On the way, you can glance down on a space alive with color and light and students in agreeable chairs and the hum of youthful conversation. Along with the Learning Commons, the Student Center is so like a gift that it could have been wrapped and ribboned. The same goes, of course, for the new science labs and classrooms and faculty offices.

It’s clearly a time to say that we’re blessed.

The book of Genesis says that when God promised to bless Abraham, the idea was this: “You will be blessed so that you yourself — and your children, too — can be a blessing.”

Students bring their dreams to this place, hoping for a job worth having and life worth living.

Now they find a much-improved environment for learning — for gaining professional competence. But competence will never be the only point. If we are blessed to be a blessing, and called to service and not just a livelihood, then character matters as much as competence.

All that lies at the heart of the Kettering College heritage.

If you studied or taught here in the past, or if you’re part of the wider community that supports our mission, you have helped to build that heritage, and we’re standing on your shoulders. We know it, too, and could not be prouder of what you have done.

An assistant professor of biology, Benjamin came ^ Laura Willis Navia to Kettering College after spending two years as an adjunct faculty member with Chaffey Community College and Jill-Renae Riverside ^ Gulczinski Community College in California, where he taught general biology and anatomy and physiology. A native of Chile, Navia earned his bachelor’s in general science from Catholic University of Puerto Rico in 1995, his master’s in biology from Andrews University in 1999, and a doctorate in the same from Loma Linda University in 2005.

Physician Assistant Jill-Renae Gulczinski has joined the physician assistant faculty as an assistant professor. Prior to joining KCMA, she spent four years as a clinically practicing physician assistant at an outpatient internal medicine practice in Riverside, Calif. A 1995 graduate of State University of New York at Binghamton with a bachelor’s in psychobiology, Gulczinski earned her master’s in health science from the George Washington University physician assistant program in 1997.

Chief Business Officer Named

Caregiver Workshop Offers Support With growing numbers of people providing in-home care to family or friends, KCMA’s Extension Division recognized a need in the community and responded by offering a new caregiver training course.

The Caregivers Workshop for the Nonprofessional is for people with no medical background who are providing day-to-day care for someone who is ill or disabled. The course provides an overview of the basics of caring for someone without compromising their own health.

“Insurance may cover a visiting nurse, or it might not, but this trains people in what to do between nurse visits,” said Judi Winslow, an Extension Division instructor. “Most places [in the Dayton area] have just information sessions about what to do, but our course offers actual handson training of patient care in the in-home setting.”

The course also helps attendees realize they are not alone. They meet and to connect with others going through the same issues every day. One outcome of the first workshop, held in the summer of 2006, was the creation of an informal caregivers’ support group.

“The workshop taught me that I need to get help from time to time,

and that I still need to take care of myself, too,” said Chris Brazelton, who provides in-home care for her father. “I also learned what changes will be happening to [my dad] in the future and to recognize when caring for him will become too much for me. The best thing was the feeling of support from people who know what they’re doing. I was able to get real help in dealing with things such as falls and how to get him up from falls safely. It also felt good to receive validation that I was doing many things right without knowing it.”

The KCMA Extension Division offers non-degree, certificate programs, catering primarily to the entry-level health care work force.

The programs typically are shortterm, high-intensity classes that cover many health care skills such as phlebotomy, nursing assistant, and basic and advanced cardiac life support.

The next caregivers workshop, which runs for six weeks, will begin Feb. 20. For more information about it or any other course offered by the Kettering College Extension Division, contact program coordinator Loretta Garskie at (937) 298-3399, Ext. 55636, or via e-mail at Loretta.Garskie@kcma.edu.

In August, Jack Burdick was named Kettering College’s new chief business officer, a new position with primary responsibilities of analyzing, planning, tracking, and forecasting college finances; creating business plans for new academic initiatives; and leading the college budget process.

A financial professional with 17 years of experience in accounting, finance, information technology, and financial aid, Burdick came to Kettering College after a three-year stint as director for student financial services at Union College in Lincoln, Neb. In 2006, he has served as the chair of the finance and audit committee for the Nebraska Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators. A certified public accountant, Burdick earned his bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of the South in 1987 and followed that with an MBA from Vanderbilt University in 1989.

SONOGRAPHY STUDENT LENDS ASSISTANCE AFTER CAR ACCIDENT First-year medical sonography student Jennifer Siemer was on her way to school one morning in mid-September when she found herself in a traffic jam created by a car accident farther up the highway. While waiting in traffic, she heard the noises of another accident several cars behind hers.

When Siemer, a trained first-responder, heard people screaming, she ran to help.

A station wagon had been smashed

between two cars, and a man from another vehicle already was on the scene, using a tire iron to break windows on doors that wouldn’t open.

Jennifer helped the man pull three little girls from the back seat of the car, and she waited with them until emergency services arrived. She was late to her classes at KCMA that day, but it certainly was for a good cause!

Boonshoft ribbon-cutting marks the dawn of a new era for Kettering College

W

hen the Boonshoft Center for Medical Sciences opened for the fall term, it was almost too good to be true in the eyes of Kettering College wellness and health professor Tim Willsey.

“Even now sometimes, I still can’t believe it’s here,” said Willsey, who came to Kettering College in 1977.

“We’re still reveling in the fact that it all came together so beautifully.”

president Dr. Charles Scriven praised God and the community for the efforts that brought the state-of-theart complex to fruition.

“This is an extremely exciting time for us here,” Scriven said. “Our classrooms were overcrowded to a degree that it drew the notice of our credentialing bodies, and rightly so… Our community and parent institutions rallied on our behalf. We take our commitment to our community seriously, too, and we know greater Dayton needs more professionals of the sort only we can provide them.

new building is a jewel that somehow blends the right-angled, conservative and utilitarian simplicity of the College’s first home with the prestige KCMA has carried since its founding for producing competent, caring graduates of high character who, in the tradition of the Master Healer, give whole-person care to their patients and generous service to their communities.

“We have a good faculty, and our curriculum is very high-quality,” Willsey said. “We have always put out a

good product — our graduates — but our facilities aren’t what got them to come here. It was our programs.

When we brought students here to look at the campus, oftentimes their labs in their high schools were better than what we had here.”

Today, that’s all different, says chemistry professor Margaret Rodenburg, who came to Kettering College in 1969, just two years after it opened, and again in 2004 after 10 years in Austria. She recalls fondly the early days of the College but asserts that the new facilities are much more suited to the task of liberal arts, baccalaureate education and graduate-level studies.

“When I came here the first time, the chemistry lab was brand new and beautiful,” Rodenburg said. “I started out with a class of six students and plenty of space. I ordered in everything because there was nothing to start with. When I came back three years ago, the chemistry lab looked about the same as it had in 1969. Now, the new lab is two times as big.”

Rodenburg has found the benefits of the new facility to be much more than cosmetic.

“Students can learn techniques better in the new setting,” she said.

“We have also been able to order some new equipment, like an infrared spectroscopy machine and a new refractometer. The nicest things, though, are the new prepara-

tion area and having student help.”

KCMA nursing professor Carol Warner, who was in the College’s first advanced placement class of LPNs in 1975, joined the faculty at KCMA in 1980 at the impetus of then-nursing program director Anna May Vaughan. Over the years, she’s seen teaching evolve from lecture and notes to interaction, dialogue and collaboration.

“The new classrooms are wonderful, and I love the fact that we have movable furniture,” Warner said.

“That makes it conducive to a variety of different teaching strategies.

There are far more opportunities for engaging students in different activities and learning strategies.”

in the spotlight Kettering College Dedicates New Building During Fall Convocation

D

URING ITS ANNUAL FALL CONVOCATION S E P T. 1 , Kettering College of Medical Arts dedicated the new Boonshoft Center for Medical Sciences.

Approximately 500 members of the College community gathered at the Kettering Seventh-day Adventist Church for a service that featured a brief message from President Charles Scriven, Ph.D. In his message, “Blessed to Be a Blessing,” Scriven focused on the gift of the new facility and the gifts that the College family will be able to give to others as a result.

“When God made His promise to Abraham, He said, ‘You will be blessed, so that you can be a blessing.’” Scriven said. “This new building comes our way so that we can be a blessing.

During the service, Scriven presented a commemorative plaque to Larry Beneke, the director of Kettering College’s radiologic sciences and imaging program, in tribute to Beneke’s dedication and

perseverance while serving as the College’s primary liaison with the various entities involved in the construction of the new building.

After the president’s message, the College family processed to the Boonshoft Center for a responsive reading and a dedicatory prayer by College chaplain Clive Wilson. A reception followed.

The Boonshoft Center for Medical Sciences has provided the College with state-of-the-art facilities including a new computer lab, library, academic support center, student center, classrooms, and biology and chemistry labs. The building’s new anatomy and physiology labs remain under construction but are anticipated to be ready in time for winter semester.

1968 An Ohio state charter is granted to Kettering College of Medical Arts to conduct instruction in the arts, sciences, and allied health professions, turning Kettering Hospital into the Kettering Medical Center.

The College achieves correspondent standing from the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.

2006 The Master of Physician Assistant Studies (MPAS) degree and the Bachelor of Science in Human Biology curriculum — a pre-medical and pre-dentistry program — receive accreditation.

College enrollment reaches 830 students, with 55 full-time faculty, more than 140 clinical sites for training, and more than 200 adjunct faculty and clinical supervisors. The Boonshoft Center for Medical Sciences opens, providing greatly needed space for new classrooms, laboratories, library, student activities, and offices.

The class of 2006, comprising 215 graduates, is the largest in Kettering College history.

Now is the perfect time to come home!

W H AT A W O N D E R F U L W E E K E N D ! The theme of Alumni Weekend 2006 was “Now is the perfect time to come home.” Nine members from the class of 1971 attended, some from as far away as California and others from right here in Kettering. It was a time to catch up with old friends and to meet new ones with one common denominator — our experiences at Kettering College.

Alumni enjoyed meeting with retired faculty and staff, including Eugene and Mabel Cowling, Al and Betty Brendel, Stan and Edith Applegate, and Margaret Rodenburg (who is currently unretired).

The members of the “Reflections” panel, held on Friday afternoon, told new stories and brought back memories of KCMA’s early days and how it all started.

Friday’s reception in the student center of the new Boonshoft Center for Medical Sciences included tours of the new classrooms, laboratories, and the library; alumni also shared memories of their dorm life experiences. A potluck dinner followed Sabbath services at the Kettering Seventh-day Adventist Church.

Saturday’s reception and dinner were a wonderful opportunity to visit with

friends for the final event of the weekend, at which two alumni were honored with special awards. Taryn (McGirr) Talbott (2000, 2001, 2004) was presented with the Rising Star Award, and Suzanne (Benner) Coleman (1971) was selected Distinguished Alumna. All enjoyed the good music, the great food, and the great company.

After graduating from Kettering College, Suzanne Coleman began her nursing career working as a staff nurse in the emergency room at Kettering Memorial Hospital. She later worked as a charge nurse in an isolation unit at Hurley Hospital in Flint, Michigan, and a staff nurse in an emergency clinic in Centerville, Ohio. In 1976 she obtained her bachelor of science degree from the University of Cincinnati and once again returned to Kettering Memorial Hospital as a staff nurse in labor and delivery, a position she held until 1988. During this time Suzanne was also a clinical instructor for two years at Kettering College of Medical Arts, teaching obstetrical Suzanne Benner Coleman theory and practicum to Nursing ’71 senior nursing students.

In 1990 Suzanne completed a master of science in health care

Taryn began her professional career working as a computerized tomography (CT) technician in the imaging department at Miami Valley Hospital in 2001. She currently works in that department as a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technician, and is a member of The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT).

After graduating cum laude with her bachelor of science in health professions with an emphasis in advanced imaging from Kettering College in 2004, Taryn was able to achieve one of her dreams, teaching at Kettering College. She has been teaching MRI Clinical Aspects for three semesters as an adjunct faculty and is currently pursing her master of arts in adult education from the University of Phoenix in hopes of becoming a fulltime teacher.

Taryn has been married for four years to Brian Talbott, a lead machinist in robotics and end-of-arm tools at SAS Automations. When not Taryn McGirr Talbott teaching, working or pursuRadiologic Technology ’00 ing her master’s degree, CT/MRI Certificates ’01 Taryn enjoys scrapbooking, Advanced Imaging ’04 reading, and spending time with her family, especially her nephews.

She previously was a member of the Resounding Joy Ensemble and started Radiate, a ministry in which young women are taught to keep themselves pure for their wedding night. Taryn has been the recipient of the Crusader Award, Dorothy Lane Optimist Award, and the Skip Lowe Award for community service.

Since that time she has worked for Matria Healthcare, Inc., Atlanta, Georgia, as the Director of Clinical Research & Development and for BattelleCRO (formerly CareStat Inc.,) Newton, Massachusetts, as Principal Clinical Research Associate. During her years in medical research, Suzanne has conducted more than 16 research studies and has authored or co-authored two nursing textbook chapters and over 35 journal publications. Presently the Director of the Office of Research for the Kettering Medical Center, she is responsible for the organizational conduct and compliance with regulatory requirements for all ongoing research relative to the mission of KMCN. Suzanne is a member of numerous professional associations including the Drug Information Association, the Association of Clinical Research Professionals (ACRP) and the Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric, and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN).

She is certified as a clinical research associate from ACRP. She serves on the speaker’s bureau for First Clinical Research and has been a presenter at several national meetings including ACRP and AWHONN. Suzanne has been married 34 years to John Coleman, a senior project engineer with Delphi. They have two sons, Andrew, age 30, who works as an account executive with NCR, and Brad, age 26, who is assistant superintendent for DelMonte Golf Course at Pebble Beach, Monterey, CA. She previously served on the National Nurse Advisory Board for the March of Dimes and volunteered several years with the Ohio Perinatal Association and the Dayton chapter of the March of Dimes. She is presently a volunteer with Southbrook Christian Church serving on the weekend hosting team and is also working on the SmokeFree Kettering campaign.

Coming home … that is what alumni did the first weekend in November. Alumni Weekend was a wonderful time to renew old acquaintances and to meet new and future alumni. The Kettering College Alumni Association thanks all of the alumni who attended and everyone who helped make the weekend special.

A group of 80 Kettering College alumni and their families gathered at Fifth Third Field on June 18 to take in a Dayton Dragons minor league baseball game. “New Alumni Day” was an inaugural event focusing on graduates from the past five years; other members of the college family attended as well.

Held on a beautiful Sunday afternoon, the event began with a traditional ballpark buffet of hot dogs, burgers, potato salad, cookies, and brownies before the game.

After lunch, everyone moved to their blankets or chairs on the outfield lawn and cheered for the home team. The KCMA alumni must have had a magic touch, because the Dragons beat the Southwest Michigan Devil Rays, 6-1, and one person managed to snag a foul ball.

Talk with your fellow alumni about joining us for Alumni Weekend 2007 during the second weekend of November; the alumni board already is making plans for it. The 2007-08 school year will commemorate Kettering College’s 40th anniversary. With a multitude of activities, including those associated with the Kettering Seventh-day Adventist Church’s Missions Weekend, there should be something for everyone.

As I mentioned in the previous issue of Pacesetter, we are making opportunities for you to meet with other alumni at the hospitals throughout the greater Dayton area. We’ve had gatherings on campus to celebrate the new Boonshoft Center for Medical Sciences; a Dayton Dragons game for our more recent graduates; and our Alumni Weekend held every November. We will continue our gatherings in Florida and California and at professional conferences around the country. These opportunities keep us connected.

H E N E D I T H A N D S TA N L E Y APPLEGATE ANNOUNCED THEIR NEW SCHOLARSHIP DURING ALUMNI WEEKEND, they challenged alumni to rally in support of additional funds for students at Kettering College. In just a few minutes, others in the room committed several thousand dollars to help even more students pursuing the new human biology curriculum.

With the completion of the new Boonshoft Center for Medical Sciences, Kettering College’s top funding priority is financial support for students. Scholarships can be an especially gratifying giving experience for alumni and other donors.

Financial needs abound among Kettering College students. Many come to college with meager financial resources, but with hope and with a dream of helping others through a career in health care.

Donors wishing to help students can contribute to current scholarship funds, or they can begin their own. Scholarships can be established as endowments, where only the earnings are used to help students, with the principal intact; as annually funded, where

donors make gifts each year to be used for students that year; or a combination of endowment and annually funded.

While IRS regulations require that Kettering College select the student recipients, donors can assist in setting the selection criteria, including students’ courses of study, career plans, financial needs, grade averages, or other characteristics. Some donors like to focus on special-circumstance students, such as single parents, students returning to college to prepare for second careers, or students whose life experience has involved some dramatic loss.

Scholarship donors frequently report the great fulfillment they feel when being thanked by a grateful student. With the wide variety of Kettering College programs, scholarships at almost all levels can be very helpful to students.

The Kettering Medical Center Foundation currently manages 27 scholarship funds for Kettering College.

HE INCREDIBLE HEAT GREETED US AS WE STEPPED OFF THE PLANE IN BELIZE. I looked around and saw the palm trees and the tiny, old-looking airport, and I knew I was in for an incredible experience.

A yellow school bus was waiting for us on the curb, with a large man, who had an even larger smile, standing next to it. Little did we know that that school bus was going to take us on some wild adventures, kind of like the “Magic School Bus.” (I don’t know if Wilhelm would like to be compared to the teacher in the wild dresses, but he sure did take that bus where you would never have thought it could go!)

Our first stop was the orphanage; located back in a quiet neighborhood, this small yellow building looked well-worn. The rooms

were small and filled with noise from kids who packed this small space to overflowing. The hallway was big enough for one to walk down comfortably, and the bedrooms were filled with bunk beds that were stacked three high.

It was like Christmas Day, with the kids grabbing the bags we had brought and tearing them open to see what was inside. I ended up with scratch marks down my arm from some of the kids grabbing for the bubble canisters; you’d have thought I had gold in my hand. I was disappointed in the short stay and felt a little deflated after all the time I had spent obtaining materials for them. We were there only 15 minutes, and I really don’t think the school supplies will be best used there. I decided to focus my attention to the schools on the next visit.

Settling into our Accomodations Concrete brick buildings with tin roofs and bars on the windows were a little scary at first, but the beds were very comfortable, and the hospital had bought a stack of fans for us to keep the place cool. I slept better than I have in a long time. Each morning, I would wake up at 4:30 a.m. and wait for the sun to rise. I would listen to the birds and roosters singing and crowing; it was incredibly peaceful.

Scaling a mountain We were warned ahead of time that it may be more than we expected, because it is a strenuous climb, and at first I had doubts whether I wanted to make the trek. I am so glad that I did — it was the most incredible sight.

I was terrified to climb around

honors program the rocks and jump into water where I couldn’t see what was around my feet, but I made myself keep going because I was not going to miss out on this experience. The water was just cool enough to be comfortable, and the falls felt better than any massage I have ever had. Big Rock and Five Sisters were such a contrast from the towns we had driven through.

Garbage and debris were everywhere, yet they were surrounded by such amazing beauty that I was awed at the sight.

Clinic at Bullet Tree Falls We set up in the church across from a school. It was a small building with large wooden doors, like those on a barn; the floor had contact paper for carpet or color, and the pews were wooden. After we set up, the people from the village slowly trickled in, moving from one station to another as their needs were taken care of. It was surprisingly efficient.

A little girl being seen with her mother was crying on a bench; it really broke my heart. I got out my finger puppets, and that was all it took. For the rest of the day, the little girl, Jasmine, laughed and played, and when she was seeing [faculty member] Rock Munsee, we — the finger puppets and I — were able to help her through the exam.

After our day was over, I went exploring and ended up at the school. I fell in love with every student there. I was able to help them with their schoolwork while their teacher ran over to the clinic to be seen. I was saddened by the lack of supplies and learning materials. I met some wonderful kids and had a really nice talk with the principal. After school was out, I walked some of the girls across the street on their way home and then stayed and played soccer with the boys out in the field. After a while,

I went back to the church and brought out some more players; we had a great time.

Mayan Ruins The ruins were breathtaking. I love everything that has any kind of history to it, and you really can’t get much more dated than the ruins. I enjoyed every moment we spent there.

Coming home

Health Fairs at Caye Caulker and San Pedro

The group from Kettering College that went to Belize was great, and we all seemed to get along pretty well. The experience re-emphasized for me how blessed we are in the United States. After returning to work, I had a bit of a transition period, getting used to the complaints of our patients here. Their problems were almost petty compared with those we saw in Belize. Our system is abundant with staff and supplies, and people here can’t help but to take it for granted. In Belize, receiving medical care was a rare privilege, one that was desperately needed, and one that people often go without for years at a time. They were so grateful.

I miss La Loma Luz and all the people I met, along with the view and the sounds in the morning. I feel strongly about improving the education within the schools and for the nurses within the hospital.

I cannot wait for an opportunity to return to Belize and to serve the people of this beautiful country.

The health fairs on the islands were much smaller, and kids were the major participants. I did not enjoy the Caye Caulker health fair as much. The kids would steal anything they could get their hands on when you turned your back. They kept coming back every few minutes, so you felt like you could not take your eyes off the table, which made teaching difficult.

The San Pedro health fair was a little better, since there were more adults present. The opening ceremony was long but very nice. I sat under the tent next to a little girl who was just adorable; she shared

Health Fair at La Loma Luz I was eager to get going and get my things to my table to begin the day. People were piled under the tent two hours before we were to begin, and then the school buses started arriving. The students were so well-behaved and curious! They asked questions and seemed sincerely interested in what we had to say; even the adults seemed really to be getting into what we had to offer. I enjoyed sharing what little knowledge had on my subject and getting to know the Belizean people. It was a busy, hot day, but I felt like I really made an impact on some of the individuals who visited my table. I hope I made them rethink their smoking habits.
