01. FJORD-FYR. OSLO CULTURAL CENTER Master’s Thesis Project | Politecnico Di Milano A+ | Honorable mention The objective was to provide a fully-integrated project for the Vippetangen neighborhood in Oslo by combining urban, architectural, structural and technological solutions to work as as a complete system. Accessibility, connectivity, and proximity were the main complexes of the extensive investigations on various levels, in addition to further optimizations that helped improve the quality of the surroundings and integrate the project’s objectives with Oslo’s development plan. Following the Norwegian building technical regulations, further extended studies on the building’s energy and daylight performance, structural verifications, and the suitability of materials for the environment contributed to the creation of the urban and architectural design.

URBAN DESIGN The post-industrialized zones of Oslo’s waterfront are being transformed and given back to the people. It is a vital opportunity for those areas to preserve their identity while becoming more green, vibrant, and sustainable. The masterplan of the Vippetangen area is considered essential to create a link in the harbor promenade. By honoring historic buildings such as the Grain silo and Akershus castle while also introducing new urban elements into the development, the plan becomes the point of transition between the past and the future, defining its identity as a balance between new and old.

ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN As a landmark in the harbor promenade the new Cultural Center will link the historical sites with the newly developed waterfront projects by connecting the site from different directions through a ferry, a cycle path, and a vehicular route. The flexible outdoor spaces around the building, designed as steps, serve as outdoor seating. And the sloping green spaces connect the indoor spaces with the outdoor spaces.

SUSTAINABLE DESIGN A fundamental aspect of the building’s design was providing structural and technological solutions that integrate with the Architectural design and acheive high performance evaluation in terms of design codes and regulations. With the help of the available tools to analyze the energy and daylight performance, the assessment of the building performance was achieved, and that made possible the selection of appropriate technologies and materials to be taken.

STRUCTURAL DESIGN The system for the loadbearing structure was chosen to be a steel structure with frames with span 12m that consist of beams, trusses, columns and bracing elements providing lateral stability to them. The ground floor slab and the foundations structure were designed of reinforced concrete. The first and the second-floor slab are composite made by cast-in-place concrete on steel profiled decking. The roof stucture was made of linear corugated steel deck system supported by the roof trusses. A particular vertical structural system was adopted to carry the cantilevering part of the slab, by inclined members supported by shear reinforced concrete walls.

02. STEEL STRUCTURE SOFIA, BULGARIA MASTERS THESIS PROJECT | UACEG

The airport building project takes the architectural concept of the airport building in Kazan. The project then was adapted to the conditions of the city of Sofia in Bulgaria. The aim of the project was to design the structure of the building while not taking into account the existing one. Hence, changing the location to a seismic zone such as Sofia brought new requirements to the design of the structural elements and the calculations. The analysis and the structural verifications were performed complying with the Eurocodes 2,3,4 and 8 and the National Annexes.

The analysis consisted of modal and linear dynamic analysis to define the actions on the structure in seismic conditions using the Response spectrum (Eurocode 8).

03. GIZ CAMPUS RESIDENTIAL BUILDING FRANKFURT,GERMANY

The technical design stage (LP4) involved two proposals for the structural system for the central Atrium pedestrian passages and connection staircases. In the project two structural options were studied one with columns and another with suspended from the ceiling structural system. The five story staircase and it is made by CLT floors and steel supporting beams and staircases constructed entirely with steel profiles. Primary and secondary timber beams connected to the surrounding reinforced concrete framework form the roof structure. The vibrations caused by pedestrians were one of the most crucial parts of the design. The standard the Hivoss design of footbridges EN03 2008 was used as the primary source.

According to the Hivoss design of footbridges guide - frequencies between 1,25Hz and 4,6 Hz might cause critical vertical excitations by the second harmonic of pedestrian loads but until now there is no information in the literature that such have happened. In our opinion frequencies above the reference values for a human walking induced vibration with range from 1,7 Hz to 2,3Hz could not be considered critical for the structure.

04. SPORTS AND CULTURAL CENTER SABLES D’OLONNE,FRANCE

The gym, the multisport hall, the arena, and the cultural building are the four structures that form the Sports and Cultural Center project. Involved in preliminary schematic design, predimensioning of structural elements, and preliminary and conceptual design (PRO) of the reinforced concrete structure. Developing the structural proposals and coordinating the Revit models with the architects were some of the most crucial initial tasks. Additionally, a workflow that allowed incorporating geometry from the BIM model into the calculation program needed to be developed. Due to the complexity of the geometry, separate models were developed in Rhino and then transferred into the calculation program RFEM using Grasshoper.

05. UNIVERSITA’ DEGLI STUDI DI MILANO M I L A N , I TA LY

The complex of eleven buildings that make up the Universita’ degli studi di Milano was constructed in the 20th century and is now a part of the city of Milan’s cultural heritage. The complex’s redevelopment project was centered on keeping the historical buildings’ regularity and homogeneity while adopting a counterbalancing architectural language for the new structures. The detailed verifications of the structural elements, reinforcement of the primary vertical masonry structures, reinforcement of slabs and beams with FRP for shear and bending, and steel profile reinforcement of timber roof structures all were part of the structural design and BIM modeling. Reinforced concrete floors, walls, and columns, along with steel structure canopies, are used to construct the new constructions.

06. MILAN INNOVATION DISTRICT MIXED USE M I L A N , I TA LY

MIND is a redevelopment project for the district of Expo 2015. It attempts to create “a city in the city” and was designed to tackle the challenges of our time through innovation. The urban development imagines a profound union between architecture, sustainability and technology. The MIND Village Nord consisted of reuse of the clusters called “Fruit and Legumes” into office center for start-ups with the ultimate objective of turning temporary structures into permanent ones. For the structural project the exisitng timber framewor of the pavilions were reused and reinforced by steel profiles in order to accommodate the creation of additional intermediate levels and bridge connections between the individual units.
