FROM THE PRESIDENT

Dear Alumni and Friends,

In 2018, Marshall B. Ketchum University marked the fifth anniversary of its founding, and the year gave me a number of opportunities to reflect on how far we’ve come as a health care institution, and to celebrate how strongly we are positioned to continue “reimagining the future of health care education.”

In just a few years, our College of Pharmacy and School of PA Studies have already distinguished themselves as premier programs, nicely complementing the long reputation of excellence enjoyed by the Southern California College of Optometry. I am honored to have a front-row seat to the many accomplishments of our students, faculty and staff as we collaborate on innovative interprofessional health care.

An essential part of MBKU’s mission is to give members of our community the occasion to connect with and thrive in partnership with the community around us. One such example of this is our Children’s Vision Initiative, which allows us to provide life-changing vision services to children in Orange County who might otherwise go without. Our influence is also felt through the community service projects that students devise and implement as a part of their coursework, as well as grant-supported projects funded through organizations such as the Rose Hills Foundation.

Our facilities continue to see state-of-the-art upgrades and additions that allow us to keep apace with the constant innovation of health care education; in late 2017, we dedicated the Health Professions Building, an interprofessional learning space with room for all three of our disciplines.

MBKU attracts exceptional faculty members and students alike. SCCO continues to draw top-tier faculty and produce students who are engaged in their studies and proven leaders in national organizations.

For two straight years PA students have received a 100% pass rate on their licensing exams. Additionally, due to the hard work of our faculty and administration, the College of Pharmacy is working toward full accreditation.

Finally, I would like to express my gratitude to our many benefactors on and off campus, who because of their generosity make possible the profound impact that MBKU has each year on the students we educate in our classrooms, and on the people we help in our community.

APRIL 19, 2017

MBKU hosted its first-ever interprofessional simulation exercise on April 19 with participation from optometry, PA and pharmacy students together with Cal State Fullerton nursing students. Small groups were given 90 minutes for a patient encounter in a mock patient exam room then collaboratively evaluated and examined the patient and developed a comprehensive care management plan.

The University dedicated its newest interprofessional learning space, the Health Professions Building , on Oct. 24, 2017. More than 100 guests joined President Kevin L. Alexander, OD, PhD, and the University community for the occasion, which showcased the multifaceted, 43,000-square-foot building that houses learning spaces for all three of MBKU’s professional programs: optometry, PA and pharmacy.

DECEMBER 11, 2017

One month after MBKU’s second PA class graduated in November 2017 with their Master of Medical Science degrees and PA Certificates, the students learned that all 32 of them passed the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants Examination. This is the second year in a row MBKU students have achieved 100% pass rate on their licensing exams.

JANUARY 30, 2018

The first SCCO Innovator Awards invited students’ bold new optometry ideas. From 20 submissions, five finalists were evaluated for originality, impact, viability and feasibility. Winners Matthew Tran, Andrew Sprenkel and Andrew Lee proposed Opt-In, a secure mobile app that optometrists can use to hire and pay doctors for fill in work.

The team received $5,000 and a trip to the Vision Summit Council in New York.

MARCH, 2018

The inaugural graduation ceremony for students in the collaborative Executive Certificate Program offered by the Southern California College of Optometry and Tokyo Optometric College took place in March. This unique, two-year program is meant to grow the scope of practice of optometrists in Japan. It includes online classes taught by SCCO faculty and four in-person workshops at the college in Tokyo.

Construction began in May on the new Pharmaceutical Sciences Research Laboratory, which opened later in the year at the Ketchum Health facility in Anaheim Hills. The lab provides facilities for faculty members to add to the body of knowledge in pharmaceutical science, promote faculty professional development and ensure that faculty research enhances the reputation of MBKU’s College of Pharmacy.

The College of Pharmacy was notified in July that the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education granted it Candidate status, the second major step in the process of becoming a fully accredited college. The news came not long after a site visit from an ACPE team that confirmed the excellent progress of the College of Pharmacy,
