Director’s Notes “I don't know whether it w will be read by everyone, but it is meant for eveeryone… Social problems go beyond y p at the frontiers. Humankkind's wounds, those huge sores that litter the w world,, do not stop blue and red lines drawn on maps. Wherever men go in ignorance or despair, wherever women sell themselves for bread, wherever children lack a book to learn from or a warm hearth, Les Miserables knocks at the door and says, 'Open up, I am here for you.” – Victor Hugo I read an article on Medium a while ago that questioned why some art persists, while other art is fleeting. It designated theme and style to be the two determining factors for sustainable art. While I certainly agree (is there a lyric in the musical theatre canon more stylish than “the blood of the martyrs will water the meadows of France”?), I would add durability to the list. Does the work speak to the community for whichJoin and for when was created, or does it adjust to space and Us foritOur Grand circumstance? Essentially: is it timeless?
Opening Celebration!
How did a 40-year-old musical based on a 150-year-old novel depicting a 200-year-old moment in history become the hot show of 2026? We have a National Tour, plus a Radio City event, plus a zillion regional productions, plus a London production that can’t stop won’t stop. “Les Miserables” was my gateway to musical theatre. I, like many of you, had every version (OG! London! 10th Anniversary! Complete Symphonic!) on both cassette and CD. I’ve had actual debates with my friends about whether Debbie Byrne or Patti LuPone or Randy Graff is the superior Fantine (answer: it’s Ruthie Henshall). I’ve watched my daydream evolve from “one day I could be Gavroche” to “one day I could be Enjolras” to Javert to Thenardier… (I still think I’d be a great Gavroche.) All this is to say: I’m a superfan. But I also recognize that the Les Mis with which I fell head over heels at age 10 is not the exact Les Mis that exists today. Sure, the notes and the lyrics are the same, but we all gotta admit that they hit differently. Even current casting calls for Eponine, Enjolras and Fantine require the actors to audition with pop/rock songs rather than traditional musical theatre selections. Like the landscape for which it was created, the musical Les Miserables has and will continue to change. We're excited to welcome you to our brand-new location. Celebrate with us and enjoy exclusive opening-day offers, exciting giveaways, delicious refreshments, and a memorable experience.
I want to thank Junior Jaxon James for being a bigger superfan than me and correcting me on Les Mis canon when I needed correcting. And finally, I want to thank the endless support and www.reallygreatsite.com camaraderie of Seniors Emma Ring and Alyssa Davis, our Assistant Director and Stage Manager, for being my silver candlesticks when I was ready to call it a day. Even the darkest night will end and the sun will rise. I’ll see you all tomorrow.
