Thank you for joining us for OUTstanding! 2021. Although I had hoped we’d all be together in Boston, I am grateful for the cross-country connection and opportunity for more people to join us. Even at a time when COVID caution keeps us apart, Jewish tradition teaches us to show up. Rabbi Hillel famously taught, “do not separate yourself from the community”/al tifrosh min ha’tzibur. Whether in the before times or in COVID time, we all have been called to give more of ourselves, and to ask more of others. LGBTQ Jews and our allies are showing-up mavens: advocating, empowering, building, tending, listening, affirming, simply being present. Tonight we celebrate honorees who are exemplars of showing up as themselves. The Lemay family, including parents Mimi and Joe, and siblings Eli, Jay, and Lucia, together advocate for inclusion, equity, and understanding, and for transgender and nonbinary rights. They exemplify the power of love and the willingness to teach, learn, change, and be changed. Rabbi Becky Silverstein is a visionary educator and practitioner of revolutionary and deep Torah. A former Keshet board member, he leads and creates Jewish institutions and spaces that invite Jews into a world of curiosity, creativity, generosity, and joy, and build a Jewish community and world where everyone can express their full selves. Idit Klein has built and led Keshet through two decades of transformative change for LGBTQ equality in and out of the Jewish world. From speed dating to fighting for civil rights to cultivating queer Jewish teen leadership, Idit cultivates big and bold dreams for LGBTQ Jews and for our entire Jewish community. The whole Keshet community is honored and blessed by these brave leaders. Keshet’s work is built on the deep conviction that we all belong, and that we will together strengthen Jewish communities by dismantling the barriers to LGBTQ Jewish equality and belonging. WE ARE PLEASED TO HONOR Rabbi Becky Silverstein A visionary educator and practitioner of revolutionary and deep Torah, Rabbi Becky Silverstein strives to build a Jewish community and world that encourages everyone to express their full selves and is passionate about learning in queer-affirming and antiracist spaces. Rabbi Becky received ordination from the Rabbinical School of Hebrew College and chairs the boards of SVARA and the Jewish Studio Project. He is a Schusterman Fellow, a SVARA Fellow, and one of the creators and organizers of the Trans Halakha Project. A former Keshet Board Member, Rabbi Becky was the first out transgender rabbi to be hired by a Conservative synagogue. The Lemay Family At the age of two-and-a-half, Jay Lemay began telling his parents that they were mistaken: “I am not a girl,” he said. “I am a boy.” By three, he was experiencing gender dysphoria. Now 11, Jay is a thriving boy, who, with his parents Joe and Mimi, and his siblings Eli and Lucia, advocates for inclusion, equality, and understanding, especially for children whose identity is not captured by their gender assigned at birth or the gender binary. When Mimi Lemay published “A Letter to My Son Jacob on his 5th Birthday” in 2015, the Lemays told their story in a NBC Nightly News segment entitled, “Jacob’s Journey,” which has reached nearly 40 million viewers and remains the network’s single most watched piece. Mimi’s 2019 memoir, What We Will Become, weaves the story of her upbringing in ultra-Orthodox Judaism with her parenting journey. Today, the whole Lemay family advocates for transgender and non-binary rights in Massachusetts and across the US. Idit Klein Idit has built and steered Keshet through two decades of transformative change for LGBTQ equality in and out of the Jewish world. From our early days planning speed dating events to training tens of thousands of Jewish leaders to preserving marriage equality and trans rights to developing queer Jewish teen leadership, Idit cultivates a bold, ever-growing vision of a Jewish community that centers and is strengthened by LGBTQ Jews.

TONIGHT’S EMCEE Rabbi Claudia Kreiman Rav Claudia is deeply invested in building an intentional and meaningful community that thrives in the commitment to each other with kindness, compassion, and love. Rav Claudia is the first Chilean-born woman to be ordained to the rabbinate. The daughter of Angel Kreiman-Brill, Chief Rabbi of Chile, she grew up in Santiago under the repressive dictatorship, inspiring her vision for social justice from a young age. Her mother Susy Wolynski Kreiman z”l was killed with 84 others in a 1994 terrorist attack on the Asociación Mutual Israelita Argentina (AMIA) in Buenos Aires. She moved to Israel in 1996 and was ordained in Jerusalem in 2002. After serving as the first rabbi of NOAM, the Masorti youth movement in Israel, Rav Claudia became the Israeli Rabbinic Fellow at B’nai Jeshurun in New York City, and helped to build Hokhmat Halev, a spiritual community for secular Israelis in Ramat Hasharon, Israel. When she moved to the U.S, Rav Claudia became the director of the Jewish Studies program at the Jewish Community Day School in Watertown and then joined Temple Beth Zion in 2007, becoming Senior Rabbi in 2019. Rav Claudia was president of the New England Rabbinical Assembly from 2012-2014, and in 2015 she was a CJP “Chai in the Hub” honoree. She serves on numerous boards including the JCRC of Greater Boston and T’ruah-The Rabbinic Call for Human Rights. She also serves as the co-chair of the New England J Street Rabbinic Cabinet. She brings her commitment and enthusiasm to the Brookline Clergy Association and Greater Boston Interfaith Organization (GBIO). She is married to Rabbi Ebn Leader, and they have two daughters, Alma and Ariel.

TONIGHT’S RECEPTION HOST Liz Alpern Liz Alpern is co-author of The Gefilte Manifesto: New Recipes for Old World Jewish Foods and co-owner of the innovative Jewish food company, The Gefilteria. She is also the creator of the global event series, Queer Soup Night. Her passion for food extends to the world of food equity, and she serves as a consultant for the national nonprofit, Fair Food Network. Her latest project (a long time coming!), is The Gefilteria’s at-home pickling kit! Liz lives in Brooklyn, NY.

MISSION STATEMENT AND PROGRAMS Keshet works for the full equality of all LGBTQ Jews and our families in Jewish life. We strengthen Jewish communities. We equip Jewish organizations with the skills and knowledge to build LGBTQ-affirming communities; create spaces in which all queer Jewish youth feel seen and valued; and advance LGBTQ rights nationwide. TRAIN LEADERS TO FOSTER LGBTQ EQUALITY IN JEWISH INSTITUTIONS Most Jewish institutions want to be inclusive of LGBTQ Jews and our families, but often do not know how to create lasting change. Keshet offers training and workshops to leadership, staff, and members at synagogues, national Jewish organizations, and community institutions. We meet people and institutions where they are in their journeys to LGBTQ equality and inclusion. With our tools, training, and support, they can put equality into practice and embrace the diversity of LGBTQ Jews. CREATE SPACES FOR LGBTQ JEWISH YOUNG PEOPLE TO BE THEIR FULL SELVES Keshet offers LGBTQ and ally Jewish teens and young adults programs and events that provide education, empowerment, and a supportive community. Online, and in-person again in the near future, young people come together, develop proud, LGBTQ Jewish identities, and build leadership skills to advance change in their communities. When we inspire and equip Jews of all ages to be allies and advocates for equality in their own communities, we see tangible and lasting progress. PRODUCE LGBTQ JEWISH RESOURCES Keshet is an internationally recognized resource for materials on the intersection of Jewish tradition and LGBTQ equality. This encompasses films, videos, lesson plans, and other resources — and our online resource library is expanding. Many of our resources appeal to wide audiences, such as our LGBTQ Safe Zone stickers and our collection of LGBTQ Jewish Heroes posters, including Harvey Milk, Rabbi Sandra Lawson, and Kate Bornstein. LGBTQ visibility changes hearts and minds. We lift up the voices of LGBTQ Jews and allies, encouraging them to share their stories so their perspectives will be heard and make a difference in Jewish life. RALLY THE JEWISH COMMUNITY TO STAND UP FOR LGBTQ RIGHTS The Jewish tenet that all people are created B’tzelem Elohim, in the Divine Image, animates Keshet’s advocacy work. We educate and mobilize American Jews to protect and advance LGBTQ civil rights, including at the ballot box.
