On March 23, Kappa Phi Lambda Brothers enjoyed the annual “Day At The Races” at Laurel Park. The Brothers and their guests met in the Director’s Dining Room where a buffet luncheon was provided. KPL updates display Bro. Kerry G. Johnson Associate Editor to The Sphinx

I was honored to assist Bro. Charles I. Stokes (Chuck) by updating the Kappa Phi Lambda display booth for the Mid-Atlantic Association of Alpha Phi Alpha Chapters (MAAC) District Conference that was held at Coppin State University on April 6. Stokes’ the detailed and informative booth was well received by the conference attendees. Additionally, there was a special edition of The KPL Sphinx printed for the Chapter of the Year competition. You can view those pages starting on Page 8. The KPL display came in second place amongst the entries.

First place was awarded to the Brothers from Kappa Upsilon Lambda (Landover, MD) of Prince George’s County. More details from the District Conference will be provided from the assigned KPL Delegates.

2. A nominee for an office must have agreed to his nomination.

NOTE: * Cannot be elected again to the office currently held.

Chapter officer duties are listed under Article VII of KPL’s Constitution and By-Laws. The election will be conducted in accordance with Article VI, Elections, as follows: 1. No officer shall serve more than two consecutive terms in any office.

2. All chapter members in good standing shall be eligible for nomination to an office, except that candidates for the offices of President and Vice President must meet the following additional eligibility requirements: a. Each nominee must have been a member in good standing for the three (3) fraternal years prior to the elections inclusive of the current fraternal year. b. Each nominee must have been a registered Eastern Regional Convention attendee during the current fraternal year or the previous fraternal year, or have been a registered attendee at the last General Convention.

3. A nominee may seek election to only one (1) office.

No officer shall concurrently hold more than one elective office.

4. The Parliamentarian shall serve as Chairman of the Elections Committee.

Alpha Men making connections Bro. Harry Evans, III recently had an opportunity to fellowship with Bro. Hyacinth C. Ahuruonye in California. Bro. Ahuruonye is the current General Treasurer of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.

Last month, Kappa Phi Lambda Brothers presented a $500 check to the Chairwoman of the (Bro.) Silas Craft Advisory Board while attending the fundraiser at the Hunan Manor Restaurant in Columbia. The Silas Craft Collegians Scholarship Endowment at Howard Community College is a program named in honor of Bro. Dr. Silas Craft, Howard County’s first African American high school principal.

Robinson, III The National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) announced that the late (Bro.) Theodore “Ted” Holtzclaw is the 2013 recipient of its Legacy Award.

At the time of his death in 2012, Holtzclaw was the Operations Manager at WABC-TV in New York. The NABJ Board of Directors selected Holtzclaw to receive this award and he will be honored posthumously this summer at NABJ’s 38th Annual Convention and Career Fair in Orlando, FL.

Past recipients of NABJ’s Legacy Award includes Monica Pearson, Anchor Emerita (WSB-TV); Leon Carter, Executive Editor (ESPN New York); Sandy Rosenbush, Co-Director (The Sports Journalism Institute); Acel Moore, Editor Emeritus (The Philadelphia Inquirer) and Paula Madison, retired Senior Vice President and Chief Diversity Officer (NBC Universal).

“For those who knew and loved Ted this is a tremendous honor.

Ted loved NABJ and his legacy will live on in the organization through the generations of journalists he touched in the Short Course at North Carolina A&T State University, and now the NABJ Legacy Award. It is a fitting tribute to an industry leader who changed the trajectory of the career paths of numerous broadcast professionals,” said Terry Owens, a NABJ veteran, a close friend of Holtzclaw’s, and Chief Public Information Officer at Maryland’s Transit Administration.

Holtzclaw spent more than 15 years at New York’s #1 rated WABC-TV helping to facilitate coverage of news stories around the world. Ted was recruited to WABC-TV as the news operations manager in 1999, after holding the same position at WTVD-TV in Durham, NC. After earning his undergraduate degree from State University of New York College at Buffalo, his first professional position was as a videographer at WCPO-TV in Cincinnati. Later he worked as a videographer at WMAR-TV in Baltimore before joining WTVD. He is a proud recipient of a Peabody Award for news coverage when he was a videographer.

Ted, as he was affectionately known, was a loyal and steadfast NABJ volunteer. For nearly 20 years, he was a dedicated supporter of the NABJ Multimedia Short Course at North Carolina A&T State University where mentored dozens of student journalists and was a wise counsel for professional colleagues.

“It is truly NABJ’s honor to pay homage to Ted Holtzclaw with our Legacy Award. We only wish we could have done so while he was still with us. His commitment to developing a strong pipeline of young black journalists inspired his professional

Ted’s memory will be revered most by his family, including his wife Verna and a young son Harrison. “Selected to receive a coveted NABJ award or not, I as his widow, am grateful for the important role NABJ played in the life of Ted Holtzclaw. His family will continue to honor and support NABJ as we cherish Ted’s memory,” said Verna E. Holtzclaw, Ted’s widow.

Among the highlights of Holtzclaw’s distinguished career includes his work in 2001 handling logistics for WABC-TV’s Pulitzer Prize coverage of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. For this remarkable work covering the tragedy, he was bestowed a Peabody Award. He traveled globally on political, investigative, and world news assignments executing the logistical components for coverage of all local, national and international live events, including Hurricane Katrina, the Republican National Convention in NYC, the earthquake in Japan, the Consistory for Cardinal Dolan, parades for the NY Yankees and Giants, and special coverage including the NYC Half Marathon. He was the highest-ranking African American at WABC-TV until weeks before his death with the hiring of Camille Edwards as Vice President of News.

“WABC-TV is so happy that NABJ is honoring Ted. He was an amazing man who loved his family and Eyewitness News. It is truly fitting that he is receiving the Legacy Award. The impact he’s had on this station will forever live on,” said Edwards.

Holtzclaw and other honorees will be celebrated at the association’s Salute to Excellence Gala, to be held August 3, in Orlando.

HISTORY OF THE CHAPTER Kappa Phi Lambda Chapter (KPL) was chartered in 1975 in Columbia of Howard County, MD. For more than 38 years, KPL has dedicated itself to the goals and precepts established by the seven founders of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. In November 1974, Brothers, who had previously gathered to form a search committee to pull together Alpha Men in Howard County, identified many Brothers in Columbia and in the surrounding areas.

This effort culminated with the Chartering Ceremony on March 1, 1975, when 34 Alpha Men and their guests attended Kappa Phi Lambda’s Charter Ceremony. Brother Belford Lawson, a past General President of AΦA, addressed the audience, installed the Officers, and presented the charter of Kappa Phi Lambda. In the true spirit of AΦA, the KPL Brotherhood continues to reach out and serve the community.

In 2001, The Alpha Foundation of Howard County, Inc. (AFHC) was founded to advance academic achievement and promote educational opportunities among Howard County African American youth.

FROM THE CHAPTER PRESIDENT Dear Brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha: It is my great honor to present for your review, the accomplishments of the Kappa Phi Lambda Chapter for 2012. As you well know, performing the work of this great fraternity requires teamwork, innovation, and commitment. We embrace these challenges and the presentation you’re readiing demonstrates that with distinct clarity.

Our fraternity was founded 107 years ago on the campus of Cornell University. Words spoken by Jewel Henry Arthur Callis stated that, “The Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. was organized to stimulate and unite promising young men for leadership roles in the extension of American democracy in all fields.”

Those words provided the guiding principles for the work of this chapter as we provide social and public services to our communities and opportunities for excellence in education.

Kappa Lambda Chapter was charted in 1975 in Howard County, Maryland. This is not only where we live, it is where we work to make life better for the “least of these”. We take great pride in our projects and volunteer commitments within the Howard County community.

Among KPL accomplishments:

n KPL presented gifts to The Cooper Senior Center, which is an adult group home for the disabled. n Our Project Cornucopia provided clothing, shoes and toys to residents in the Grassroots Crisis Center during Thanksgiving and Christmas. n Each year, Project Alpha provides workshops and discussions at a selected high school exploring issues on responsible sexual behavior. n The chapter’s participation in the Walk for Babies which supports the March of Dimes, raised over four thousand dollars. n The Alpha Foundation Hypertension Screening Program was conducted at a local barbershop. Over 260 youth were screened; measuring their blood pressure (BP), height and weight. Parents whose children were noted to have BP readings in the prehypertension or hypertension ranges were advised to follow up with their child’s health care provider.

For the Brothers of Kappa Phi Lambda, this is just the beginning. We will continue to grow. We will continue to serve, and we will continue to do so in the tradition of our beloved fraternity, AΦA! Fraternally,

n We recognized 12 outstanding high school seniors with scholarships and recognition awards. n We encouraged academic achievement among male high school youths by sponsoring the Alpha Achievers Program with 356 students participating. n Each spring, we conduct the Harambee Conference at Howard Community College for more than 120 Alpha Achievers.

The Foundation’s Purpose

The Alpha Foundation of Howard County, Inc. (AFHC) was founded in 2001 to advance educational achievement and promote educational opportunities among Howard County African-American youth.

The Foundation is organized to:

n The AFHC is committed to helping to develop students into productive, socially conscientious citizens. We accomplish this by designing and/or funding and implementing programs that encourage cultural education, academic excellence, and character and leadership development. n Promote and conduct educational seminars, community-based workshops and disseminate material aimed at encouraging youth to pursue studies in math, science, engineering and other academic disciplines.

ALPHA ACHIEVERS

Established in 1997, the Alpha Achievers program is a nationally recognized group that targets AfricanAmerican high school male students with a 3.0 grade point average or higher. The Alpha Achievers program seeks to promote character growth and academic excellence and is currently serving nearly 400 African American male students at Howard County’s 12 high schools.

AFRICA SANKOFA Through the Alpha Sankofa program, KPL and the AFHC encourages young African-American males to explore their connection with historical and cultural roots to Ghana, West Africa. There are two components to the program: the DuBois-Robeson International Scholars, a travel program to Ghana; the Dr. Henry Arthur Callis Memorial Project through which the fraternity has supported health and science education programs in Agogo, Ashanti Region of Ghana.

HARAMBEE CONFERENCE The Sixth Annual Harambee Conference held on March 26, 2013, was attended by more than 100 Alpha Achievers; their advisors and several Brothers of Kappa Phi Lambda Chapter at Howard Community College.

The young men were greeted by Howard County Public School System Superintendent Dr. Renee Foose, Ed.D, who shared her story of growing up eighth in a family with 8 children.

Dr. Foose defied teachers who had low expectations of her because she “didn’t belong in the college prep classes. She encouraged the young men not to let anyone discourage them from academic achievement because they “may not belong in challenging courses.”

Speaking of herself, Dr. Foose took her own advice years ago. She explained that after she graduated from high school and enrolled in a community college where, it took her five years to earn a two-year associate’s degree.

She achieved this goal while working as a school bus driver and, later, as a state trooper before continuing her education. After she earned her bachelor’s degree, she worked as a teacher while she pursuing advanced degrees in education.

Bro. Dr. C. Vernon Gray advised our young men of the importance of making wise choices now because a bad choice could haunt them for the rest of their lives, severely limiting their options and, at times, even blocking their planned career paths.

He focused on the misuse of social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter. He told the young men that people are watching everything that they post online, and future employers and colleges are checking them out when they receive applications to see if you’re a suitable fit for their organization or school.

Rosimar Melendez of the Horizon Foundation, gave an interactive presentation on how sugary drinks negatively affect our health especially among African-American youth who are targeted by the beverage industry.

The drinks contain what are called empty calories that are stored as fat and are the most significant contributor to childhood, and ultimately, adult obesity which can lead to preventable diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure heart disease and high cholesterol.

The Alpha Achievers accepted an assignment to document the presence of vending machines in their high schools with unhealthy offerings and to submit their findings to the Horizon Foundation.

Bro. Ken Jennings, Jr. delivered a serious lesson in a humorous way, reading the African-American folktale, High John the Conqueror from a book by Julius Lester. “High John”, a perennial character in African American folktales, used his wit and guile to outsmart and outmaneuver his slave master who was so driven by greed that he was tricked by High John into unwittingly drowning himself.

Oji McLeod, of Marriotts Ridge High School, was awarded a check for $100 as the first place winner of the Ojise Essay contest. He wrote a critical essay on the article selected by the education committee as the contest for this year’s contest.

The Harambee Conference concluded with Alpha Achiever Jamal Washington reading a stirring poem that was informed by his knowledge of our rich, African heritage, which dates before 1619 in Jamestown, Virginia. He married images of our great and proud history with contemporary themes to illustrate what we have lost and how much we have to regain.

BOYS SCOUTS OF AMERICA Kappa Phi Lambda Brothers are actively involved in leadership roles with local Boy and Cub Scout Troops. Recently, Bro. Vincent Harris awarded the Arrow of Light award to seven Scouts in his Pack 333. The Arrow of Light is the highest award in Cub Scouting. The Boy Scouts of America and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. have goals and objectives which make for a “natural alliance” between the two organizations.

Alphas and AKAs registered voters in Howard Co.

Kappa Phi Lambda helped to register voters for last year’s election. The KPL Brothers worked with members of the Columbia, MD Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Nearly 65 people were registered at the various locations throughout the region.

Project Cornucopia provides service to community

Kappa Phi Lambda’s Project Cornucopia Coat and Clothes Drive is held each year in November. KPL Brothers work together to distribute the clothes to families in need.

The drive is held in conjunction with the Howard County Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and Grace Community Church.

MEN IN THE KITCHEN Every October, Kappa Phi Lambda Brothers show off their cooking skills at the “Men In The Kitchen” event sponsored by the Howard County Center of African American Culture held at Reservoir High School.

PROJECT ALPHA

Project Alpha is a national program that utilizes lectures and workshops focusing on sexual responsibility of young males within the African- American community.

Brothers of KPL provided Project Alpha workshops at Howard County high schools to educate young men on responsible sexual behavior.

The facilitators provided the young adults with information about teen pregnancy prevention and stopping the spread of HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases.

Alpha President-elect visits KPL

During the September 2012 Kappa Phi Lambda chapter meeting, Bro. Mark S. Tillman, the President-elect of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., participated in the gathering.

Bro. Tillman was elected as the 34th General President of the fraternity.

Seals aims to prevent childhood obesity and hypertension Bro. Dr. Jerry Seals has set an outstanding example for the Howard County Community by tackling the growing epidemic of childhood hypertension and obesity – two conditions that can later lead to heart disease, stroke and cancer if not properly treated.

ALPHAS IN ANNAPOLIS

Each year, Men of AΦA visit the state capital to celebrate Alpha Legislative Night. On Jan. 30, several Brothers of Kappa Phi Lambda Chapter joined Brothers from across Maryland and the Washington, DC metro area at this annual event. The night was sponsored by Baltimore City Delegate Bro. Keith Haynes and Delta Lambda Chapter of Baltimore, where Bro. Haynes is a member.

In 2011, Seals began The Alpha Foundation Hypertension Screening Program for Children (ages 3-18) at Warren’s Barbershop in Owen Brown Village Center on Saturdays. The Mall at Columbia and outdoor picnics have also served as screening sites. The program involves children being weighed to determine their body mass index and having their blood pressure checked. Depending on the test results, children are referred to their doctors for follow-up care, or parents are given instructions to contact the Howard County Health Department if their children do not have a regular physician.

The screening program is funded by a Horizon Foundation grant, which Seals sought with the help of Kappa Phi Lambda brothers, including Bro. Dr. Roger Lewis and Bro. Bryant Robinson, Esq., as well as volunteer physician Dr. Ruth Penn. Horizon’s grants focus on promoting positive lifestyles that reduce

obesity, increase access to health care and test innovations that improve health and wellness in the community. According to the foundation, one in four children in the county is overweight or obese.
