KPL OFFERS ALPHAS WORK TO KEEP COMMUNITY CLEAN HELP TO CAC

Kappa Phi Lambda Chapter learned that funding for the food and nutrition programs provided by the Community Action Council of Howard County (CAC) had been discontinued due to a lack of federal funding. KPL Brothers knew how important this program is to the area. Therefore last month, the KPL Social Committee held a football watch party and collected funds and school supplies that were given to the CAC. In the photo above, KPL President, Bro. Norris T. In October, several Kappa Phi Lambda Brothers and their associates worked together and picked up trash while participating in Howard County’s “Adopt-A-Road” program. KPL’s section of highway is Broke Land Parkway from Snowden River Parkway to Cradlerock Way in Columbia. Every KPL Brother is asked to come and participate during the next “clean-up” day. The next scheduled date is Saturday, Dec. 14. Please stay updated via the KPL email system for specific time or any date changes.

Brotherhood Worship at Howard From Bro. James T. Jackson KPL Chapter Chaplain

The next Kappa Phi Lambda Brotherhood Worship will occur Sunday, November 17, 2013. KPL Brothers will worship at Howard University, Crampton Auditorium, located at 2455 Sixth St., NW, Washington, DC 20059. The service starts at 11:00 a.m. Brothers are asked to arrive at 10:45 a.m. and be dressed in official Alpha attire (black suit, gold tie).

SPECIAL MEETING CHANGE The next Kappa Phi Lambda Chapter meeting will be held on Saturday, November 9, 2013. Due to scheduling conflicts, the start time will be 3:00 p.m. at Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory, 11100 Johns Hopkins Road, Laurel, MD. Additionally, there will not be time for the repast or time to shoot the annual chapter photo at the meeting. Brothers, please plan your schedule accordingly.

Brothers and their guests enjoyed NFL watch party Last month, the KPL Social Committee held a football watch party at Nottingham’s Tavern in Columbia. The family-friendly event raised funds for the Community Action Council of Howard County (CAC).

School supplies were also collected that would be donated to the CAC. The event provided KPL an opportunity to work on its goal of reclamation of Alpha Brothers to get reconnected with the fraternity.

KPL held informative meeting for interested men In addition to community involvement Kappa Phi Lambda Chapter demonstrates each year, KPL and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. is about developing strong and successful men. On October 15, KPL held its Fall Smoker that was lead by Bro. Brandon Tilghman, KPL Chapter Dean of Membership Development. An inquisitive group of candidates attended the meeting. Each man met with KPL Brothers during the gathering. This was a good opportunity for the Alpha men at the event to share their positive experiences of being members of the fraternity.

Alphas: First of All, Servants of All ...

KPL Brothers attended the Howard County Public School System (HCPSS) Educational Partnerships’ Luncheon in October.

Bro. Johnson draws a crowd On October 26, Bro. Kerry G. Johnson illustrated caricatures for the African American Community Roundtable of Howard County at Howard Community College. The local service group held a Fall Healthcare Enrollment Festival at the college. The event was hosted by Congressman Elijah E. Cummings and Howard County Councilman Calvin Ball.

Alpha Kappa Alpha honors Kappa Phi Lambda Iota Lambda Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. presented Kappa Phi Lambda Chapter with the “Emerging Young Leaders” award for the chapter’s contributions to the Howard County area. The “Celebrate Timeless Service in Howard County Awards Brunch” was held on October 12. The event was also sponsored by the sorority’s affiliate, The Pearl Foundation, Inc. Alphas In The Kitchen On October 27, several Kappa Phi Lambda Brothers demonstrated their cooking expertise at the “Men In The Kitchen” event sponsored by the Howard County Center of African American Culture held at Long Reach High School in Columbia. November 4, 2013 Dear Brothers, The Eastern Region is pleased to announce the re-up to the regional newsletter. As we prepare for our winter release, we are asking that you make your submissions by November 30, 2013.

If you or your chapter would like to make a submission to the newsletter, we are asking for highlights that range from: wedding/ baby announcements, work promotions, chapter anniversaries, retirement, past events. We will not, however, be accepting party fliers.

To make a submission, please adhere to the following guidelines for news: -

Name Chapter District Text should be a maximum of 150 words Photographs should accompany written submissions (caption all brothers mentioned in photo) Word documents for articles and any photos or artwork should be high resolution (300 dpi) attachments (no bigger than 10mb)

If you would like to contribute to the newsletter with a story idea, please submit a brief summary that details the issue and why you think the information would be of interest to the brotherhood of this region. Story ideas are due by November 11, 2013 and final articles are due no later than November 30, 2013.
