This weekend promises to be a very memorable event for everyone who attends and participates. With this event, we are hoping to include all of the traditional pieces of the Lincoln County Cowboy Symposium through the years including the music, chuckwagons and vendors; and expand on them while adding outdoor concerts, Miss Rodeo New Mexico pageant and a rough stock rodeo. We remain respectful to the concept of the festival’s originators including Ray Reed and R.D. Hubbard, while attempting to give it a little ‘facelift’ this year. Whether you are a longtime supporter of this festival or new to the event this year, we hope that you and your family have a wonderful time.

Just a quick reminder about the goals of our Foundation: proceeds from this weekend help us create scholarships for worthy students that are associated with the racing industry, in an effort to keep the racing legacy alive well into the future.

The All American CowboyFest presents top musical acts appearing on five different stages throughout t h e f e s t i v a l T h u r s d a y t h r o u g h S u n d a y.

Kevin Fowler kicks off the musical entertainment for the weekend on Thursday night with special guest Will Bannister beginning at 7:00 PM. The grandstand vendors will be open starting at 5:00 PM, including the food court vendors.

Kevin is an Amarillo, Texas native that has released five studio albums and has charted Billboard Top 40 singles. He has written many top songs including Sammy Kershaw’s “Beer, Bait & Ammo,” Mark Chesnutt’s “The Lord Loves the Drinkin’ Man,” and Montgomery Gentry’s “Long Line of Losers.” It will make Kevin’s second appearance at Ruidoso Downs Race Track.

Friday night’s concert features Aaron Watson and Coby Carter at 7:00 PM. Aaron has recorded several albums including “The Underdog” which went to number-one on country charts in 2015. He is also a native of Amarillo, Texas, and appears for the first time at the race track.

On Saturday afternoon, Grammy-nominated performer Michael Martin Murphey will perform on the track stage at 12:00 Noon.

He is considered one of the nation’s top performers of western music, and has six gold albums to his credit. Originally from Dallas, Texas, Michael is a prominent voice for western horsemen, ranchers and cowboys across the country.

The Saturday night d a n c e features two regular artists to the Cowboy Symposium, Dave Alexander and Jake Hooker starting at 7:00 PM in the big tent.

A total of 17 nationally recognized chuckwagons will set up camp in the infield and will compete on Saturday in the World Championship Food Competition sponsored by Albertson’s Market.

Lunch will be served at 12:00 noon at each of the chuckwagons.

Each trail or ranch wagon is judged on authenticity, food preparation, and taste. Categories include meat, potatoes, beans, bread, and dessert. There is over $13,000 in cash prizes to be won by the wagons along with the notoriety of winning the World Championship at Ruidoso Downs.

Six W hite Horses From Hardin Simmons University · Director: Debbie Jones The Six White Horses have been a Hardin Simmons University tradition since the 1930’s. Beginning as a color guard for the famous Cowboy Band, the group soon evolved into an elite riding unit, performing their routine at rodeos across the state of Texas.

The White Horse team has ridden in many parades across the region and has been featured in Presidential Inaugural ceremonies since 1941. As a service to the community, the horses make annual trips to elementary schools in Abilene and the surrounding area, and thousands of children get a chance to ride a white horse each year.

The Six White Horses will appear in the Quarter Horse arena at 11:30 AM and 2 PM on Friday.

Children are invited to come after the presentation for a quick ride around the arena!

Runyan Ranch Rescue Zoo Children of all ages will love to visit the Runyan Ranch Rescue Zoo located in the infield paddock. There are buffalo, cattle of many species, horses, mules, llamas, alpacas, emu, yak, tortoises, and many, many more animals to see. Runyan Ranch Rescue Zoo, located in Mayhill, is New Mexico’s largest animal refuge.

Feeding cups are available and the proceeds benefit the rescue efforts.

New Mexico Leather Guild NMLG preserves leather craft as an ancient art that still uses the basic tools used centuries ago.

In fact, it is one of the oldest crafts known to humankind. Come watch and participate in hands-on demonstrations.

Kid’s Poetry Contest This competition for aspiring cowboy poets is open to local school groups. Contestants read their original poetry as part of the competition at the All American CowboyFest. Kid’s Poetry Contest is conducted by ENMU-Ruidoso.

Southwest Dairy Mobile Classroom This mobile classroom is a traveling milking parlor featuring a live cow and an oral presentation that is designed to teach kids about the dairy industry.

Chuckwagon Demonstrations by the Lonely Goat Ranch Stop by and learn how to cook on an authentic chuckwagon!

New Mexico Farm and Ranch Museum The New Mexico Farm and Ranch Museum presents Wool is Cool! Learn all about sheep and where wool comes from. This hands-on demonstration allows students to try spinning, carding and weaving.

The competition consists of ten cowboys competing in three divisions: ranch bronc riding, saddle bronc riding, and bull riding.

The top four cowboys in each division will return to compete in the “short-go” finals. We hope you enjoy something brand new to Ruidoso Downs Race Track.

TH ANK YOU R ANCH BRONC RIDING Ranch bronc riding is an event in which an average working cowboy can compete because it does not require him to stay on the road.

Most contestants start colts and cowboy for a living, then ride broncs on the weekends.

Having an occupation that requires spending all day in the saddle and riding a variety of colts is the best practice for their avocation.

SADDLE BRONC RIDING Saddle bronc riding is rodeo’s classic event, requiring strength, style, grace and precise timing for a fluid ride. Saddle bronc riding evolved from the task of breaking and training horses to work the cattle ranches of the Old West. Many cowboys claim it is the toughest rodeo event to master because of the technical skills necessary for success.

BULL RIDING Bull riding is a rodeo sport that involves a rider getting on a bucking bull and attempting to stay mounted while the animal tries to buck off the rider.

American bull riding has been called “the most dangerous eight seconds in sports.”

John Baird, considered one of the regions top horse trainers, has developed his techniques of training both the rider and the horse. For the horse, John uses the pressure and release method along with conditioned muscle memory to achieve a willing horse that is both soft and responsive. For the rider, John uses “finished” riding for his students to allow them the most balanced and controlled ride on their horse. John begins his training with both the horse and his students on the ground. He has trained horses and students from beginner to champions and thoroughly loves his job.

John is also a retired US Army soldier and a 100% disabled combat veteran.

He uses his own disabilities and the horse to help others overcome their disabilities. He studied under various trainers and clinicians around the world, culminating with John and Josh Lyons.

He achieved the highest level possible with the formal school and now volunteers to go back and instruct during classes.

The New Mexico Rodeo Pageant and Scholarship Association is organized for the purpose of conducting the Miss Rodeo New Mexico Pageant and related activities. The Association provides the opportunity for young women to participate in a positive competition which promotes our western heritage, furthers the sport of rodeo, and promotes advanced educational opportunities by providing a scholarship.

The Miss Rodeo New Mexico Pageant encourages contestants from throughout New Mexico. Titleholders include Miss Rodeo New Mexico, Teen Miss Rodeo New Mexico and Princess Miss Rodeo New Mexico. During their year-long reign these ladies travel throughout New Mexico representing the sport of rodeo.

Miss Rodeo New Mexico travels to events throughout the United States as she represents the Land of Enchantment. She works closely with professional rodeos to keep our western heritage alive and vibrant.

As she travels she prepares to compete for the Miss Rodeo America title. That competition is held each year in Las Vegas and includes horsemanship, appearance, stage presence, personality and current events.

One of the exciting performers in the quarter horse track arena this weekend are the New Mexico Territorial Mounted Shooters. They will appear Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 9:00 AM. Cowboy Mounted Shooting is the fastest growing equestrian sport in the Nation. Mounted contestants compete in this fast-action, timed event using two .45 caliber single-action revolvers, each loaded with five rounds of specially prepared blank ammunition.

There are 10 targets of over 60 different patterns that are selected the day of the match.

The first five targets are called “random” balloon targets—shoot as many as you can!

The rider then holsters their gun and shoots the five “run down” balloons

SPEED AND ACCURACY ARE THE NAME OF THE GAME! The Cowboy Mounted Shooting Association (CMSA) has a variety of levels of competition for everyone, ranging from novice levels to the seasoned professional. The United States Mounted Shooting (USMS) competitions are run on the 4D format that has made professional barrel racing what it is today. USMS & CMSA puts a big emphasis on gun safety and accuracy.

You can use any horse or mule that you want. Some horses take to this sport easily while others do not. It is up to your horse's temperament and desire to train to get your horse used to shooting, turning, and going fast all at the same time.

Mounted Shooters use .45 caliber single action revolvers like those used in the late 1800's. Single action revolvers must be cocked each time before firing by drawing the hammer back. There is also a shotgun and lever action rifle division.
