Mission The mission of the New Mexico School for the Deaf (NMSD), New Mexico’s first public school, is to provide for the unique needs of children and students who are deaf/hard of hearing, their families, and professional partners by providing a comprehensive array of school and statewide programs.

As a school, NMSD provides an American Sign Language and English bilingual learning environment that includes direct, ongoing access to language and communication in and out of the classroom with a wide range of peers and adults. The students are interactive learners who receive dynamic high quality standardsbased instruction in a variety of curricular and extra-curricular activities.

As a statewide service agency, NMSD collaborates with families, school districts, agencies and communities throughout the state to meet the critical language, communication, and learning needs of children and students in New Mexico who are deaf/hard of hearing, birth through high school.

SUPERINTENDENT’S LETTER

DEAR NMSD FAMILY & FRIENDS As we wrap up my first year as the Superintendent of the New Mexico School for the Deaf, I am proud to say that this year was a successful one even with the various challenges we faced. We have been slowly emerging from the Pandemic and as masks have become optional, it is wonderful seeing our students’ smiles. I have been pleasantly surprised by those who are sporting new braces and those who have had theirs removed. There are some new students whose faces we had never seen until recently. There is nothing that can be said for authentic face to face interactions, especially within the Deaf community where facial expressions are an integral part of all communications.

It is wonderful being able to see our students participate in sports and other activities and we look forward to fully welcoming our fans as soon as possible. Our students recently participated in the first prom since 2019. We anticipate the 2022-2023 school year will kick off our new “normal” when it comes to operations and addressing remote work and schooling.

We also look forward to the reopening of the new and improved Dining Hall which is undergoing the most significant renovations to date. The modernized building will continue to pay homage to the historical aspects of our campus by preserving the art as well as the valued architectural features such as wood windows and vigas.

This Progress issue focuses on fostering leadership. Over the past few years, NMSD has expanded upon its leadership opportunities for our students with a renewed commitment to the Middle School Student Council, the High School Student Body Government, and our Jr. NAD programs. Over the summer, a record number of four students will be attending NAD’s Youth Leadership Camp in Oregon. Others will work in our Assistance Dogs of the West and Rocky Mountain Youth Corps programs that focus not only on how students become effective employees but how they lead and support others.

"A leader is best when people barely know (this person) exists, when (this person’s) work is done, the aim fulfilled, they will say: we did it ourselves." ~ Lao Tzu I personally strive to take a page from this playbook as I continue to navigate what it means to be a good leader of this beautiful school. To be a good leader does not always mean being the person in front or being the spokesperson.

It is hoped that our students will be equipped to grow visions and dreams into reality whether it be their own or those of others.

STUDENTS LEAD THE WAY

“If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader.” ~ John Quincy Adams There are several student leadership organizations on campus that promote the development of leadership and collaboration skills: Student Body Government (SBG), Junior National Association of the Deaf (Jr. NAD), and Middle School Student Council (MS SC). These student organizations allow middle and high schoolers to have input into our school's community needs from a student perspective. By participating in these organizations, students develop critical leadership skills such as collaboration, creativity, problemsolving and strategic thinking. Early leadership skills mean students will be more confident leading as adults and will make positive changes throughout the NMSD Community.

All students have the opportunity to develop leadership skills before they graduate from NMSD. Collaborating and working with others is an empowering critical skill set that allows students to know their own strengths as well as learning to work with others' strengths. Through meetings, activity planning, and various projects, students become well-seasoned at discussing concerns and ideas that might benefit all students and staff.

It is thrilling to see middle school and high school leadership organizations growing and thriving with an increasing number of interested students, and more and more activities taking place. The 2021-2022 school year had 26 middle and high school students participating in SBG, Jr. NAD and MS SC! We hope to see these numbers increase as more students join in the future.

Student Body Government (SBG) SBG focuses on the school’s internal community and had 13 active members during the 2021-2022 school year. SBG officers - President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer - are filled by high school students. There is also a representative from each grade level. Additional members are encouraged to participate.

During the pandemic, the SBG team focused on creative ways for high school students to stay connected. They hosted biweekly social hours and town meetings and conducted many surveys where they collected input and ideas from high school students. Their responses were used to determine and guide projects throughout the school year.

Junior National Association of the Deaf (Jr. NAD) NMSD’s Jr. NAD focuses on the community outside of school and has 14 highly motivated members, four of whom also serve as officers (President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer.)

There are many Jr. NAD chapters across the country that work closely with the National Association of the Deaf (NAD)’s vision. Every two years, NMSD’s Jr. NAD Chapter enjoys a wonderful opportunity to meet with Chapters from around the country during the biennial national conference where young Deaf/Hard of Hearing adults share and discuss their concerns. We recently attended the Spring 2022 biannual conference hosted by the California School for the Deaf - Riverside Chapter remotely, and learned so much from this experience! We also wrote and submitted a bid to host the 2026 Jr. NAD Conference. We were successful in this endeavor, and look forward to hosting the 2026 biannual conference and welcoming other Chapters from across the country to New Mexico.

FEATURE Middle School Student Council (MS SC) NMSD’s MS SCl was established last year, with nine students participating for the 2021-2022 school year. Middle school students serve as President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer. MS SC welcomes additional interested members, and we hope to see the membership grow in the coming years.

2020-2021 was the first year MS SC had the opportunity to determine its goals as a new organization for young leaders. They met virtually several times and hosted a few remote social hours which gave students the opportunity to meet, connect and socialize.

This year MS SC explored concerns and goals of the Middle School department.

They worked diligently with middle school students and their principal to share ideas and concerns, and to create videos to share the outcomes of meetings with the middle school community. They also collaborated with NMSD’s Student Body Government on some activities throughout the year.

Our students are developing leadership skills through MS SC that will prepare them for future leadership roles in high school and later, as graduates.

NMSD’s three leadership organizations give students an arena for developing their skills as leaders. These groups hone negotiating, planning, collaborating, and implementation skills as our middle schoolers work with others in our community. Students have shown growth over the years as they take on leadership roles and work with the school staff and students to make NMSD a more student-centered community. We are excited that students are developing critical skills that prepare them to be future leaders and change agents; making the world a better place for all.

EARLY INTERVENTION & DEVELOPMENTAL SERVICES

THE GIFT OF WENDY

This New Mexico Progress magazine focuses on leaders, and the Early Intervention and Developmental Services (EIDS) Department has many supportive leaders around the state. Children’s Medical Services, the Family Infant Toddler program, the Navajo Nation Division of Diné Education, and Hands and Voices New Mexico are just some of the organizations with great leaders that assist in our statewide work.

There are also many leaders within NMSD who have worked tirelessly on behalf of the families we serve. One of these leaders, EIDS Regional Supervisor Wendy Prouse, passed away unexpectedly in March, leaving a great hole in the Northwest community where she was greatly esteemed.

Wendy provided early intervention services to children and families for many years. She was also pivotal in the creation of the Northwest Regional Coalition and the Gallup Tele-Audiology Project, which allows for earlier identification of babies who are Deaf. Wendy also loved animals. As part of her work outside of NMSD, she volunteered her time with dog rescue, placing over 100 dogs with forever families.

On Friday, April 8th, a Life Celebration for Wendy was held at Berg Park in Farmington. More than two hundred family members, friends, colleagues and former students were in attendance. The theme for the celebration was “The Gift of Wendy.”

Many of her friends and colleagues shared their memories, including NMSD staff, the Curley Family, her best friend Kate Dixon, former students Guinivere Shorty and Kaleb Larkins, members of NM Hands & Voices, the Gallup Tele-Audiology Project, and the Northwest Regional Coalition. Kristen Santesson from the Coalition shared that “Wendy was always so humble and would get out of the way so that others could lead.” That’s what the best leaders do. Wendy will be greatly missed and remembered for her kindness and great love for the families and children she served.

A memorial fund was established at the request of Wendy’s family.

A donation can be made to the Wendy Prouse Memorial Fund at the Santa Fe Community Foundation. The funds will be used to support the Statewide Tele-Audiology Program and early identification of Deaf & Hard of Hearing babies. This program was near and dear to Wendy's heart.

EARLY CHILDHOOD – ALBUQUERQUE PRESCHOOL

FUTURE LEADERS

It might seem too soon to approach creating leaders in an early childhood education (ECE) center, but the skills they are learning and using at this age are crucial for creating the leaders of tomorrow. For example, in ECE, we work on sharing and recognizing emotions in our peers. This helps develop empathy, a skill every effective leader uses to provide support and guidance in their groups and teams.

We also work on the beginnings of negotiation and compromise. Students learn to offer a trade when asking for an item their friend is playing with or developing a set amount of time for their turn (for example, two minutes and then they switch). This gives leaders the opportunity for buy-in, allowing everyone to be included and satisfied with the outcome. Other leadership areas include organization and running of the classroom. Students follow clean-up routines and prompt each other to help when needed. This builds leaders that participate but also delegate work for the group they lead.

We believe all good leaders need to be able to work through problems, find creative solutions, and use critical thinking skills. As a result, we encourage students to work in groups and share what they’ve discovered while exploring materials, building on creativity and teamwork.

We look forward to seeing our mini-leaders grow and become some of the important leaders of tomorrow!

EARLY CHILDHOOD – FARMINGTON PRESCHOOL

LEADERSHIP STARTS IN PRESCHOOL

“They’re not just kids, they’re future leaders.” ~ Mike F. Johnson Preschool children are natural leaders. They love to have ownership of their day, and there are many classroom activities that foster the development of leadership skills. It’s wonderful to see their natural sense of ownership flower as they lead other students through experiences!

Twice a day, before recess, we review our alphabet chart. The students take turns leading our letter practice. Tobias Jim enjoys taking on the responsibility as other students like Emery Hargis watch intently. They also incorporate the alphabet routine into their dramatic play - as seen in the photo with Brodan Morgan and Haylee Gutierrez.

During our Writing Workshop, one student writes with the teacher on the easel. Their writing efforts are validated while the teacher models the next tier of writing development. Their work is presented to the group. Tobias Jim takes the lead and divides the easel in quadrants so that each student can draw a house, while carefully explaining his rendering to the class.

We see leadership during dramatic play as students negotiate play scenarios. Pals Tobias Jim and Minnie Brown build a bus and fill it with babies. Empowered by her monkey prop, Emery Hargis is able to tell Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed. Children love to lead when given opportunities!

Our preschoolers exude confidence when they experience leadership in creativity. When a child showcases a picture they created, they become confident artists. Brodan Morgan shares his picture of a person. Tobias Jim presents a self-portrait rich in detail. Children are sure that their work is worthy and has value.

EARLY CHILDHOOD – LAS CRUCES PRESCHOOL

CONFIDENCE LEADS THE WAY

We are always eager to take on new and daily challenges at the Las Cruces Preschool. This is how one of our students, Alden Green, is becoming a strong and confident leader.

This past winter we had great fun making gingerbread cookies!

We used all our strength to mix, roll, and cut out gingerbread cookie batter. Alden’s creative juices were flowing as he decorated his cookie. His face beamed with pride as he observed how they came out of the oven. The cookies were delicious, too!

To build physical strength, we challenged ourselves to walk to the Mesilla Plaza from school. Alden impressively led the way and when we arrived at the Plaza, we took a well-deserved break. We posed in front of a beautifully decorated pine tree.

We all felt strong and accomplished by completing our walking challenge.

Not long after our return from winter break, we celebrated the 100th day of school. During one fun activity, we pretended to grow older and wiser. In fact, Alden did grow older and wiser it was also his fourth birthday! We also learned about and celebrated community helpers and leaders, focusing on their professions and how they help people. Some of these helpers and leaders included mail carriers, dentists, doctors, and fire fighters. Alden enjoyed taking on the roles of these leaders during his dramatic play.

EARLY CHILDHOOD – SANTA FE PRESCHOOL

I SPY WITH MY LITTLE EYE....

CHILDREN LEARNING!

Despite being unable to take field trips due to COVID, our Santa Fe preschoolers continue to amaze with their never-ending curiosity and ability to discover new study projects. "I Spy,” "Airplanes,” and "Making our Brains Stronger,” are just a few of their interests!

I Spy This project was created by 4-year-old Lucas Lujan. Lucas made a replica of an I Spy book page from the block area. He carefully studied it before attempting to recreate the scene at his table. The project caught the eyes of his peers, and many tried to build their own block scene, filling it with items to find. They each created three scenes with blocks, nature and sand. The children added a variety of objects and then asked their peers to find the items. They practiced reading numbers for how many objects to find. It was so much fun to see our creativity and ingenuity in action!

Airplanes This project was created by 4-year-old Jac Carwell. Jac used connecting cubes to make an airplane. His friends (Lucas, Mika, Oliver, and Madison) joined in and made airplanes as well. With the help of Sha Reins, they gathered materials and presented them to the other students to further explore.

Students made their own control panel and pretended to be pilots navigating through the air. The study also tested how far an airplane could travel based on size and weight. We compared regular paper airplanes vs. poster board airplanes vs model airplanes. We discovered together that paper airplanes flew the furthest!

Making our Brains Stronger “Making our Brains Stronger” is a new Social Emotional Learning program for preschool through high school. The brain loves to be challenged and is always developing new pathways (synapses and dendrites). Our students practiced several ways to make their brains stronger by trying and not giving up, even when it might be hard. They also strengthen their brains by positive thought, dreaming, and goal-setting. Students are enjoying the books, songs, movies, and other activities of this new program!

TAKING THE REINS

“Horses leave footprints on our hearts.” ~ ListCaboodle.com This spring semester, the upper elementary Alternative Curriculum class attended the New Mexico Center for Therapeutic Riding (NMCTR). NMCTR’s mission is to enrich and expand the lives of children, youth, and adults with special needs through equine-assisted activities and therapies. The 8-week program teaches students to care for horses and develop riding skills.

The primary goal of the program is to empower students to ride as independently as possible, and to gain self-confidence and leadership skills through their accomplishments.

During the training, students showed commitment and passion for “all things horse.” “Wednesday is horse therapy - I can’t wait!” was a common sentiment in my classroom. I noted that students were applying the leadership skills they learned. They took responsibility and conducted their assigned weekly jobs with enthusiasm, and were eager to collaborate with each other and help guide classroom lessons.

The experience helped students to foster a more positive physical, emotional and social mindset. Ultimately the riding arena offered a powerful platform for practicing skills that carry over to the classroom and life. Here are students’ impressions of their experience:

HIGH SCHOOL: TRANSITION

BRANCHING OUT

We were delighted that the Aspen Camp Job Skills Program - which has been in the works throughout the pandemic - finally started this May. Successful high school transitions often involve service learning; allowing students to engage in community projects and “give back,” all the while learning new job skills or concepts and gaining hands-on experiences.

Since NMSD youth are very altruistic and understand the importance of volunteer service, they were able to jump into their project work at Aspen Camp. They did a wonderful job representing our school!

The job skills program at Aspen Camp provided students from NMSD, the Colorado School for the Deaf, and the Utah School for the Deaf with training from industry experts in carpentry and painting. Students also engaged in several different projects to help Aspen Camp prepare for their family and youth programs this summer. Some of the projects included painting the main lodge including trim, replacing amphitheater seating and stage decking with new waterproof Trex boards, installing a new camp sign, as well as brush clearing along trails.

Karen Immerso, an Aspen Camp board member, said this about the program: “The Aspen Camp of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing appreciates all the energy and hard work done by the students from New Mexico, Utah, and Colorado. They can speak to their own individual experiences of working together, building a sense of community in 3 short days, and seeing the accomplishments of the finished projects. The interaction with volunteers and local professionals added to their learning opportunities.

We truly believe this pilot program of skill-building has created new ideas for how we might expand the program in the future.”

DE’VIA ARTIST IN RESIDENCE

The Arts are highly valued at NMSD. We believe in providing students with every opportunity to experience their own cultural values through art, as well as learn about the cultures and experiences of others. Another core belief is in freedom of expression through a variety of mediums - allowing NMSD’s Deaf and Hard of Hearing students multiple ways to communicate through the creative process.

NMSD’s Artist in Residence (AIR) Program is one of the best ways for students to interact and learn from Deaf Artists. Due to the pandemic, NSMD’s program had been on hold the past few years, but in late March, we welcomed worldrenowned De’VIA Artist David Call. He worked with students on several art projects over a two-week span.

De’VIA (Deaf View/Image Art), an art movement formed by a group of Deaf artists in 1989 at the first Deaf Way Festival, produces art that examines and expresses the Deaf Experience from a cultural, linguistic and intersectional point of view. The four elements of De’VIA are:

Our International Studies Program also held a fundraising event with David.

The evening of carving and printing linocuts was well attended by staff and other community members. It was fun learning more about David as an artist, as well as creating powerful prints together. The evening was highly successful!

David is a retired social studies and art teacher from California, and primarily a linocut (printmaking) artist. He supported students' exploration of linocut carving, printing, and ASL Action Painting which entailed using ASL handshapes, dipping into paint and splattering onto paper to tell their stories. It was very Jackson Pollock-like! He also worked with students on the creation of two large Keith-Haring-inspired art murals that will be hung on campus.

NEON GLOW NMSD’s first live Senior Prom since 2019 was a BLAST! NMSD: NOW & THEN

My hearing loss began in third grade. I was suddenly faced with communication barriers at home and school. My inability to hear was misunderstood as ignoring my mother. My grades began to plummet as I couldn’t hear my teacher despite hearing aids and an amplification system.

Being fitted with hearing aids provided some normalcy in school, but I encountered a variety of challenges throughout my elementary years. At that time, educational support - specifically for Deaf and Hard of Hearing students - was not available in my home district and resources were limited.

I began my educational journey at NMSD in sixth grade after my mother consulted with an audiologist and school staff members. The accessible and inclusive communication shaped the person I am today. I recall the cultural shock I experienced watching hands moving to communicate, facial expressions emphasized, and the teacher making me an active participant in my learning. As a child I played “school” and taught my stuffed animals. But my sixth-grade teacher at NMSD inspired me to become an educator. It was then, I realized that everyone learns differently.

My eight-year elementary teaching career led me to reflect upon my own experiences and consider how I could better serve students. As a result, I pursued a Special Education teaching career with the goal of empowering high school students with IEPs to become active participants in their education.

With the impact of the COVID pandemic and masked education, accessible communication became additionally challenging while also experiencing increased hearing loss. However, working at NMSD provides me the opportunity to break down those communication barriers through use of ASL. My personal insights inspire me to ensure that the students I serve are provided accessible communication in their schools. As an Educational Consultant at NMSD, I am afforded the opportunity to create meaningful and impactful relationships while assisting children, families, and school personnel to achieve their communication and educational needs statewide.

FEATURING BEATRICE MAESTAS BURKE

Many alumni think of NMSD as their home away from home, and we hold all of our Alumni in a very special place in our heart. NMSD is the place where they grew up, gained an education, made life-long friends, and created fond memories. Below, alumna Beatrice Maestas Burke shares her time as an NMSD student and what she is currently up to.

What year did you enroll at NMSD? I became profoundly deaf at the age of 3 1/2 after contracting spinal meningitis and enrolled at NMSD in the fall of 1936 when I was 6.

What town were you from? I spent my childhood on a farm in San Pedro, which is a village near Española, New Mexico.

Who were your best friends while at school? Esperanza (Espie) Correa, Margaret Conklin, and Alice Tafoya.

What were your favorite subjects when at NMSD? Reading, English/Writing, Science, and Cosmetology.

Who were your favorite teachers or staff members and why? I am indebted to my first three teachers at NMSD: Mrs. Connor, Mrs. Reynolds, and Mrs. Harrington for providing me with a solid educational foundation during my formative years. That foundation was further solidified by Dr. Hester, Dr. Dillon, Mrs. Voorhess, Mr. Wolach, Mr. Clingenpeel, and Miss Lusk. Both Dr. Hester and Dr. Dillon were instrumental in encouraging me to further my education at Gallaudet College.

Mrs. Voorhess got me started in creative writing. She would bring a copy of a political cartoon, newspaper clipping, or an article from a magazine for us to analyze and in doing so, we learned how to express our views in writing.

When I first became a teacher, I found myself imitating Mr. Wolach’s teaching techniques. He was consistently firm but always fair. Mr. Clingenpeel instilled within me a desire to explore the world of science. Miss Lusk was not only a wonderful teacher but also a friend with whom I could share my feelings and dreams. The climate at NMSD enabled me to develop independence, a positive self-image, academic as well as leadership skills, and the determination to overcome barriers. I also learned to accept my deafness and to focus on my potential and abilities. I am grateful to my parents for sending me to NMSD even though it was difficult for them to send their 6-year-old child away from home. But they knew they made the right decision.

What are your fondest memories while a student at NMSD? Traveling to Arizona and Oklahoma to play basketball is by far one of my fondest memories! Other fond memories include the annual Harvest Day activities, Girl Scout camping, the Halloween and Christmas parties, the “formal” dance in the auditorium, roller skating, playing baseball and volleyball, and attending the Fall Festival in Albuquerque.

What year did you graduate from NMSD? I graduated from NMSD in 1953.

After you graduated, what college and profession did you go into? Even though I passed the New Mexico State Board exam, I opted to go to Gallaudet College after I graduated from NMSD. I graduated from Gallaudet with a B.A. degree in Special Education. In 1987, I received a Master’s degree in English from Southwest Texas State University.

In what ways have you stayed connected with NMSD? After graduating from Gallaudet, I got married and followed my husband wherever he was employed, but I helped Espie at the museum every time we came to New Mexico. I was a member of NMSDAA (New Mexico School for the Deaf Alumni Association) and served as President in 2007. I helped with the revision of the by-laws and with the preparation of NMDSAA’s 120th Anniversary Reunion. I also try to get involved by communicating with several legislators whenever a bill related to NMSD appears in front of the State Legislature.

What are you currently up to in your life? During my 35-year teaching career, I have taught at a school for the deaf; 2 different regional school day programs for the deaf, and at a college. After my retirement, I worked as an adjunct English faculty for 3 years at a community college in Austin, Texas. I also remained involved as chair and member of the SouthWest College for the Deaf Advisory Committee, and as a member and president of the Texas School for the Deaf Governing Board for 20 years. My life has also revolved around my family, which includes three adult children, ten grandchildren, and 11 great grandchildren. My cup runneth over with much love and joy.
