SUPERINTENDENT’S UPDATE

DEAR FRIENDS With the 2013-2014 school year winding down, I would like to touch upon recent developments, particularly ones that will be significant going forward into the 2014-2015 school year in August.

With an eye on us doing a more effective and focused job than ever on intertwining curriculum, assessment and instruction as we continue our commitment to maximizing our students’ learning potential, we have decided to use the vacant Director of Instruction to create a new highly specialized position: Student Outcomes Specialist. This new person will report to Dr. Jennifer Herbold, our Principal of Curriculum and Special Programs and s/he will serve the whole school and work closely with our principals and teachers. Stay tuned on who we will be hiring.

We have done a thoughtful, small scale aquaponics experimentation on campus this year after some students and staff took up training at Santa Fe Community College. Results have been so encouraging and promising that the school has decided on having a full-fledged aquaponics program starting the new school year. Aquaponics is a food production system that combines raising water aquatic animals such as koi and tilapia in tanks with hydroponics which is growing vegetables and other plants in water. What is exciting about this whole program is it offers a wide range of meaningful and lifelong academic (e.g. environmental science, mathematics, marketing, and nutrition) and career preparation hands-on learning experiences. This program promises to benefit our students from elementary through high school. Using federal funds, two greenhouse domes will be constructed this summer on the corner of where old Hester Hall was away from the gym in the back of the campus.

Though completion of our new library/museum facility has been postponed to July from the original April date, we truly expect to have a fully operational library by the time school starts in August. However, the transition of the museum exhibits to their new home will take longer. We anticipate the new museum being ready by the time our annual Roadrunner Classic basketball tournament rolls around in December 2014.

The basement of Dillon Hall has been completely transformed. From long-time under-utilization of poorly lighted space, the basement has become a modernized, well-lighted and pleasant facility. It is now primed to be used by our Transportation, Health Center, Center on Educational Consultation & Training and Early Intervention & Involvement departments. Relocation of these areas will begin in June.

Revamping of the school’s website is taking longer than first anticipated. But the additional use of time will pay off as we have settled on a particular web design company and are also working with a public relations firm to assist with content development of our vast array of programs and services. We now hope to have our revised website up and running by early fall.

I wish to thank each and every one of you for reading our school magazine and staying interested in the latest at NMSD. Wishing you all a relaxing and fun summer.

TAKING ON THAILAND!

BY PAT ERCOLINO Since 2000, the NMSD International Studies Program has been bringing students abroad to learn about the world through travel. The program is designed to provide students with a better understanding of world history, cultures and global issues. Students plan their own trips, from deciding on how to fundraise to using public transportation. They also study the history, economy, arts, politics and culture of the country they are about to visit. Students are required to maintain exemplary academic performance and conduct throughout the year.

Our 2001 trip took our students to Switzerland, Italy and France. We explored Mexico in 2003, and studied Finland, Sweden and Norway in 2005. In 2007, the students were awed by the rain forests in Brazil. In 2008, we traveled around Costa Rica. In 2010, our students revisited our first trip by returning to France, Switzerland and Italy. In 2012, our students paid their respects to Machu Picchu in Peru. This spring, we decided to travel to Thailand!

April 6/7 – After an 18 hour flight, we arrived in Bangkok, Thailand, where we met our tour guide and friend, Jay Bunnag.

While in Bangkok we visited the Floating Market where we shopped and enjoyed lunch. We also visited the 3D Painting Museum, which was very cool!

April 8/9 - We went to a city named Pattaya, which

is about an hour and a half drive from Bangkok. We enjoyed the scenic views of the city and had some delicious seafood for dinner. The next day we took a boat to Koh Larn Island where we spent the day swimming and playing.

APRIL 10/11 - We returned to Bangkok to pick up Tyrel, who traveled

separately because he was competing in the Academic Bowl competition in Washington, DC. We visited the Grand Palace and then a temple called Wat Mahathat in Ayudthaya. We also checked out the Khao San Street in Bangkok where we ate from street vendors. Guess what they were serving? Bugs, frogs and scorpions!! Tyrel bravely ate a scorpion which was chock full of protein!! We were also quite fortunate to take a cooking class at the Thai Orchid Cookery School. We prepared Tom Yum soup, spring rolls, green curry with chicken, Pad Thai with tofu and a steamed banana cake for dessert. We had a lot of fun and were surprised at how easy it was to cook these items. Everything was delicious!

TAKING ON THAILAND! April 12 - We headed to Chiang Mai to meet up with some new friends -- Asian elephants! When we arrived we had to change into special clothing and gather bamboo and fruits. We then fed and bathed the elephants. We all had a chance to ride them, too! It was a bit scary at first, but then we all go the hang of it and had a great time

April 13 - We were lucky enough to participate in

Thailand’s Songkran Festival. Everyone had big squirt guns and soaked each other in the streets. Tradition says that by being soaked with water, the body will be new and fresh and ready to celebrate the New Year.

April 14/15 - We visited the Tiger Kingdom where we hung out with adult and younger tigers.

The tigers were mellow. This was really cool and fun. In the afternoon, we visited the Wat Phra That Doi Suthep Temple where we survived the climb of 306 steps! While at the temple we saw a beautiful emerald Buddha statue. We stopped by a jade factory where we learned that jade is a valued stone that comes in colors from green to red.

April 15 - We went to the Eagle Track Zip Line, situated between three hill tribal villages outside of the city of Chaing Mai. We passed many rubber trees in this lush rain forest as we had fun zip lining! We then headed back to the hotel for a buffet lunch and some swimming. That evening we went to the Kantoke Palace for a dinner comprised of traditional northern Thai dishes. While eating, we were entertained by dancers from the hill tribe, Lanna. Some of us joined in with their traditional dancing, too. It was a very fun evening.

TAKING ON THAILAND! April 16 - We had to say goodbye to Chiang Ma

and all of the friendly people there who were very good to us. Upon returning to hot and humid Bangkok, we checked into our hotel and then met Aun (our tour guide) and Jay (our tour coordinator) for a quick lunch, and then rode on tuk tuks to Wat Phone Temple. At the Temple we saw a huge and impressive Buddha statue lying on its side. We then took a boat taxi to one of the “MBK” (malls in Bangkok), and shopped for a few hours.

We met some deaf Thai people at the food court and enjoyed chatting with them.

April 17 - We visited a town named Ratchiburi where they have a floating market. We shopped for a few hours and we also were able to feed watermelons to some long tailed macaques (monkeys)! We had lunch in Ratchiburi and ate some fried shelled worms! Yum!! On our way back to our hotel we stopped by Siam cultural Park where we learned many important aspects of Thai culture. We arrived at our hotel exhausted and some of us decided to swim in the pool and then we went off for a light dinner nearby.

April 18 - Today is our last full day in Bangkok. In the

morning we visited the Setisain School for the Deaf.

The school was impressive, but closed for the summer.

We also visited the National Association for the Deaf of Thailand, and met the Secretary who taught us about Thai Deaf history. At dinner that night in China Town, we met more Deaf Thai people. We had a good time, and then headed to the hotel to pack and get ready to fly back to Albuquerque the next day.

April 19/20 - All packed and ready to head back to the USA! After a very long flight and layovers, we arrived safe and sound in Albuquerque. We had an amazing adventure, and yet we were very happy to be back home again!!

EARLY INTERVENTION & INVOLVEMENT

STRONG COLLABORATIVE PARTNERSHIPS

BY JOANNE CORWIN Most states bring together key players as they work to meet Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) outcomes - this is a strategic way of ensuring the best outcomes. But New Mexico is fortunate to have a strong collaborative relationship between NMSD and the Department of Health, charged with ensuring that newborn hearing is screened through Children’s Medical Services (CMS) and IDEA Part C services through the Family Infant Toddler Program (FIT). NMSD also has a charge to serve infants and toddlers who are deaf or hard of hearing. This has resulted in a Memorandum of Understanding between these two state agencies, helping to make sure that young children identified through EHDI receive early intervention services from providers specifically trained to work with young children who are deaf or hard of hearing and their families. This agreement has been in place since 2001, and was just re-signed on March 12, 2014 by both Superintendent Ronald Stern and the Cabinet Secretary of the Department of Health, Retta Ward.

Interns, Interns, Interns

There are very few higher education programs focusing on training early intervention providers for families with deaf or hard of hearing children.

This is a highly specialized field requiring numerous specific competencies. NMSD is committed to supporting these higher education programs to provide the best-qualified interventionists for the field. Every year, NMSD mentors two or more interns - typically from Gallaudet University (GU) and/or Utah State University (USU).

This academic year, we’ve provided field experience and supervision to four interns: Shelly Merrill (PIC Program, USU); Anna Dodd (PIC Program, USU); Nori Rittenhouse (DM Program, GU); and Bregitt Jimenez (Part-time DM Program; GU). The interns have done a tremendous job providing services, and families have loved their enthusiasm!

ECHO Initiative

On March 10, 2014 NMSD’s Early Intervention and Involvement Division hosted New Mexico’s first Early Childhood Hearing Outreach (ECHO) Initiative trainers’ training. This initiative is aimed at insuring that all children receiving Early Head Start services have their hearing screened on a regular basis. It not only puts another safety net in place for children who become deaf or hard of hearing after their newborn hearing screen, but also links hearing screening data between such agencies as Children’s Medical Services, Early Head Start, the Family Infant Toddler Program and the New Mexico School for the Deaf. Jeff Hoffman, the Outreach Coordinator for the ECHO Initiative, places New Mexico with a “handful of elite states” working toward coordinated data systems.

BALLOONING KNOWLEDGE

EARLY CHILDHOOD - TODDLERS

BY EMMA LOZADO Our toddlers love balloons! This past spring, they’ve been excitedly exploring and developing new vocabulary, signs and concepts about these colorful orbs. Our curious toddlers kicked them, sorted them by colors, shapes and sizes, filled them with water and ice - and even tried to blow them up themselves – this was pricelessly funny to see!

As a related activity, we took a field trip to Party City.

The store has a huge balloon section, and eyes widened when they saw all the balloons on display - and the air tanks for inflating them! We had a lively discussion about all the types of balloons that could be purchased. And we loved watching the staff person use the helium tanks to inflate the balloons. They each left the store clutching their very own balloon! Thank you, Party City!

EARLY CHILDHOOD - ABQ PRESCHOOL

REGGIO EXPERT IN ALBUQUERQUE

BY SALLY ANDERSON The Albuquerque preschool recently welcomed the esteemed Lella Gandini to our classroom. Ms. Gandini, Ed.D., is an early childhood education consultant and the Reggio Children United States Liaison for the Dissemination of the Reggio Emilia Approach. Her vast background in education includes teaching at Smith College and the University of Massachusetts, as well as a long stint as a Visiting Scholar at Lesley University. Ms. Gandini is also a wellknown lecturer and presenter on the Reggio Emilia philosophy, authoring a number of articles, chapters and books about the Reggio Emilia approach.

Ms. Gandini spent several hours observing our classrooms, interacting with our students, reviewing the story panels displayed throughout the preschool, and sharing stories and insights with our staff. She also enjoyed a visit to our Early Childhood Education program in Santa Fe. This was the first time Ms. Gandini had the chance to closely observe the Reggio approach at a school for the deaf. She responded enthusiastically, and said she was “very impressed.” She expressed the hope that the special education / inclusion expert in the Italian Reggio schools would one day have the opportunity to visit NMSD. Our exciting day was followed by a well-attended evening of dialogue at the NMSD Albuquerque Preschool.

Dozens of people representing early childhood programs filled the room, and we were grateful to Ms. Gandini for sharing her time and knowledge!

EARLY CHILDHOOD - FARMINGTON PRESCHOOL

GORILLAS IN OUR MIDST

BY MARY HELEN PEREZ Recently, our class enjoyed reading the book, Good Night, Gorilla, by Peggy Rathmann. The children understood the humor of a gorilla letting all of the animals out of their cages. We even acted out the woman’s surprise when all of the animals ended up in her bedroom telling her good night! The students made cages out of small boxes and painted them to match the cages in the story. We practiced sequencing the events of the story with our zoo cages and animal props. We also made animal masks from paper plates to add to the story’s re-enactment.

Our favorite activity was pretending to be the gorilla stealing keys and opening the cages - while signing “shhh.” We investigated what it means to be quiet rather than noisy, and we took turns pretending to be the zookeeper and the woman in a robe with the flashlight.

We placed several copies of the book in the library. Students kept spontaneously reading the book and acting it out. The zoo theme was applied to the sensory table, puppet area, puzzle area and the cutting table.

Two new students joined in the fun, as they recently arrived in the Farmington preschool program. Willie Lopez, Jr is a two and a half year old with a warm smile and adventurous spirit. Four year old Leah Moberly is an Artesia transfer, and is another delightful addition to our class. Welcome Willie and Leah!

EARLY CHILDHOOD - LAS CRUCES PRESCHOOL

SUPER-SIZED LEARNING!!!

BY KIM BOYKIN The Super Bowl is always exciting, even if your favorite doesn’t win. This year the Seattle Seahawks battled the Denver Broncos, and it was set to be a great game. Our class decided to rally around the Seahawks to learn more about the game of football and #40 - Derrick Coleman.

Derrick Coleman is deaf, yet he plays in the NFL. We watched the Duracell commercial about him, and then talked about what it means to be strong and to persevere. We studied the numbers 4 and 0, and reproduced Coleman’s jersey. Isaiah Flores’ brother Henry let us borrow his pads and helmet so that we could try on junior high school football equipment.

(Thank you, Henry!) We learned how a football field is set up, and the basic rules. Then we decided we needed to see a real football field!

Coach Ocampo, head coach at Centennial High School, graciously set up an afternoon field trip for our class. The students began by visiting the locker room where players store their equipment and get ready for games. Then we went out to the field, and ran from one end zone to the other. Coach Ocampo taught students to kick field goals and catch passes.

He taught them to hold the ball tight while running so opposing players can’t shake it loose - he even brought out tackling dummies for the children to run and hit with all their strength!.

After our lessons outside, we visited the weight room inside. We practiced building our muscles with lighter weights [and learned Kim is pretty wimpy!]. Afterwards, we met an actual high school football player named Nicolas. He didn’t look scary until he put on all his pads and equipment. When he emerged in full gear, only Devon was brave enough to try to tackle him!

The children tried on helmets and pads and saw the big room full of jerseys with numbers. At the end of the trip, all the children received personalized bags with super cool CHS fan gear!

We learned a lot about the game of football and the strength and determination needed to play at any level. We also learned we can do anything we set our minds and hearts to - even play football in the NFL. And when Coleman took the field during the Super Bowl, he had some very excited little fans cheering from Las Cruces, New Mexico!

EARLY CHILDHOOD - SANTA FE PRESCHOOL

FAIRY PRINCESS IN OUR MIDST

BY SHA REINS NMSD’s Phoebe Anaya - our very own Fairy Princess - attended the Santa Fe preschool for two and a half years. In that short time, she filled our classrooms with her enthusiasm and joy. She always came to school excited, giving zillions of hug - and her love for fairies, princesses, butterflies, dancing, and singing was contagious.

Phoebe LOVED to dress up as a princess in fancy dresses, crowns and jewelry. She also loved to dance, and the other girls in her class would often dance along with her.

“Mirror, Mirror on the wall, who is the fairest?” was her favorite question. Then she would look at herself in the mirror, sway her hips and say, ‘Uh-Oh, Beautiful!’ - And she was!!

We all miss our sweet Phoebe dearly. She will live forever in our memory and hearts.

ELEMENTARY

TREES ROCK

BY DIANA BERRIGAN Last fall, Dr. Michael Milone, a longterm supporter of NMSD, encouraged elementary students and staff to participate in Scotties Tissues Trees Rock video contest. We were excited about a new educational opportunity for our school, and so we went for it!

We decided on an upper elementary project, utilizing our fourteen students and three teachers. Instead of making one video, we decided to split into groups to make three separate videos so that all students could be involved - to show their love and appreciation for trees.

We divided students into three groups of 3rd to 5th graders. I encouraged my own group to come up with ideas on their own. They researched and wrote their script, and decided to incorporate “songs” throughout the video. I helped out with the filming and research about trees. One of the challenges was keeping the video under 3 minutes! The students had so many amazing ideas to include!

The three teachers submitted the videos to the contest, and in January, Scotties Tissues informed us that one of the submissions was selected top twelve in the nation! In order to win the grand prize, we’d have to vote for our video online daily for a month. The video with the most votes would win the grand prize of $10,000! The prize winnings would be used to purchase items to help beautify the school’s campus, such as planting trees.

We shared our message with the NMSD Community and friends to help us by voting every day for one month.

The community came together and after a month of voting, we placed fourth!

As a result of our hard work and artistry, we won $5,000 for NMSD! The money will be used to beautify NMSD. Winning this prize money is very timely as we had to cut down several drought-ravaged trees in front of our campus to accommodate our new ADA compliant sidewalk along Cerrillos Road. We truly enjoyed the contest experience, and can’t thank our community enough for all of their support!

MIDDLE SCHOOL

BATTLE OF THE BOOKS

BY CINDY TIMLEN This year, the Middle School’s annual ‘Battle of the Books,’ hosted via videoconferencing by Gallaudet University, took place the second week in January. The seven year old event promotes literacy among deaf Middle School students, while encouraging critical thinking skills and a spirit of academic competition and good sportsmanship.

NMSD has taken part in the annual program from the beginning.

Five middle school students - Samuel Boyd, Jasmine Cruz, Lindsay Hand, Mya Malone and Sabrina Tennyson - prepared for the event by reading as many as three of the assigned books: American Born Chinese by Gene Luen Yang; Ninth Ward by Jewell Parker Rhodes; See You At Harry’s

NMSD competed against the Alabama School for the Deaf, Phoenix Day School for the Deaf and Utah School for the Deaf in the preliminary competition. Although we performed very well overall, our students did not make the playoffs between the top eight teams. The top four teams will go on to compete in the national competition at Gallaudet University in May. It was inspiring to watch our students compete, and we look forward to participating again next year!

I can assure you mine are still greater." --Albert Einstein March 14th was � day at NMSD - when we all behaved as irrationally as numbers! Students and staff attended three different Pi Day Workshops, learning about probability, statistics and logic.

During the first activity, we all attempted to set the fastest time arranging coins blindfolded - feeling the coins and arranging them into $2.33 while using the least amount of coins possible. The record was 1 minutes and 23 seconds.

During the second activity, participants attempted to figure out the mean, median, and mode of the colors in a package of Skittles.

The second group focused on critical thinking skills, and the math concepts of game theory and graph theory.

This section introduced students to the most famous graph and game theory problems: the Bridges of Königsberg, Clowns with Squirt Guns, and Crossing the River. These problems use mathematical logic to find the best solution and strategies to succeed.

The third workshop was about the invention of �. Students learned about circumference by using different sizes of wood circles, drawing four outlines of the width circle on a paper. Then they rolled the wood circle once, and put a dot where the circle stopped. We note that the wood circle rolled a little over 3 circle widths. Students measured that the circle stopped at about 3 and one seventh (3 1/7) widths. Using a calculator, people learned that 1/7 is equal to 0.1415, so 3 1/7 is equal to 3.1415 which is a good representation for �. We then had a contest to memorize the most digits of �. There are trillions of numbers of �. One student memorized 22 digits!

However, there are people in the world able to memorize thousands of Pi digits.

It was a day of ‘numerous’ learning experiences for all!

COOKIES FOR KITCHEN ANGELS

BY Keri-Lynn McBride For the 19th year in a row, students have continued the sweet tradition of decorating heart-shaped sugar cookies for Santa Fe's Kitchen Angels, a local non-profit that delivers hot meals to homebound, chronically ill individuals. Spreading love is what Valentine's Day (and every day!) is all about and our CBI students are indeed doing just that! The cookies are yummy and beautiful and they always bring a big smile to everyone’s faces.

Tony McCarty, Kitchen Angel’s Executive Director, was thrilled to receive the cookies delivered by our students and his staff “oohed and ahhed” over them!

SERVING UP HUGS!

BY CHRISTINE HARTMAN On a snowy February day, the Elementary CBI department went on a field trip to Tim’s Place in Albuquerque. Tim’s Place is not only known as “The World’s Friendliest Restaurant” - it is also the only one owned by someone with Down’s syndrome. The sign out front says “Breakfast * Lunch * Hugs!” Tim Harris greets all of his customers with a smile and a hug!

Our field trip goal was not only to meet (and hug) Tim, it was to order lunches without teacher support. When we arrived, we posed in front of the restaurant for a group picture. To our surprise, Tim ran out of the restaurant to pose with us. He was very friendly, and invited us inside.

Once inside, students and staff ordered lunch and enjoyed the delicious food. After we ate, we saw Tim outside in a t-shirt, dancing in the snow. It looked like so much fun, we joined him. The day before our field trip, we decorated heart cookies for Santa Fe’s Kitchen Angels. We made extra cookies to bring for Tim and his staff, and they loved them!

Walt Disney famously said: “If you can dream it, you can do it.” This has been the driving force behind Tim’s life. He believes that no disability should stand between an individual and their dreams - and his life has exceeded expectations. We left Tim’s Place inspired by Tim’s smiles, dancing and hugs!

KNOWLEDGE FAIR

SHARING AT THE FAIR

BY HEATHER COSTNER This spring, NMSD hosted its 2nd quadrennial Social Studies Knowledge Fair! This year, the major emphasis was on social studies. We researched and learned about intriguing people such as Karl Marx, Thomas Jefferson, Bill Gates, Mary Agnes Chase, Tutankhamen and Eleanor of Aquitaine.

The “Who am I?” project required students to research, write a paper, create a display or a technology presentation, and complete an interview as the person they studied. Students worked diligently on their projects both in and out of school.

The culminating event was a Social Studies Knowledge Fair held in Connor Hall’s Gym. The fair was a lively and educational event where students displayed new facts about the individuals that contributed to history. Fair attendees learned a lot in the process!

Here are some comments from our student researchers - “I think it is interesting to learn facts about the person I studied. I learned that Thomas Jefferson bought more land in America!” -Dustin Hand.

“I have enjoyed learning about Katharine Lee Bates and how she inspired others through her song, "America the Beautiful.” -Olivia Haley. “I liked learning about the way Dr. Seuss inspired other people with his books and advice.” -Evelyn Johnson. “Tamanend, a Native American leader during colonial times, was a good man who respected other people.” -Keanu Yazzie. “Thomas Edison made 1000 light bulbs and each one failed except the last one! He worked very hard on his invention and did not give up!” -Bruce Jr. Brewer. “I was excited that the person I researched was Pocahontas, a wonderful, kind person.” – Calypso Tucker. “I worked hard on my project and felt ready to present my information after doing all of my research about Gaylord Nelson!” –Coffey King.

TRANSITION

LIFE AFTER NMSD

BY DANIEL TIMLEN The Transition Department prepares students for life after graduation through Middle School Career Awareness classes, Job Preparation Program experiences, Senior Workshops and the annual Spring Career Day. One of the key components of successful “transition” is leading students to the appropriate adult agencies and support services.

To assist with smooth transitions into the ‘real world,’ a task force called the Transition Coalition works towards improving all New Mexico Deaf and Hard of Hearing students’ access to agencies. The Transition Coalition is comprised of individuals from various agencies from New Mexico WorkForce Solutions, Division of Vocational Rehabilitation, The New Mexico Commission for the Deaf/Hard of Hearing, Community Outreach Programs for the Deaf, New Mexico Public Education Department and the New Mexico School for the Deaf.

In January, a subcommittee from the coalition attended a nationwide team building training sponsored by PEPNet 2 Summit in Denver, Colorado. Fifty state teams participated in the “Building State Capacity to Address Critical Issues in Deaf Education: Transition from Secondary Education to Postsecondary Options” summit. The purpose was to identify New Mexico’s areas of transitional strength, as well as areas needing to be addressed.

The New Mexico team consisted of John Fullinwider, from DVR, Larry Campos from NM WorkForce Solutions, Nathan Gomme from the NM Commission for the Deaf/Hard of Hearing, and NMSD’s own Susan PeppersJojola and Daniel Timlen. The team had lengthy discussions on developing stronger interagency collaborations to assure that New Mexico Deaf/Hard of Hearing students and clients receive the appropriate support as they transition into their adult lives.

The coalition has already made strides collaborating with various agencies, and is currently at work with the plans developed during the Pepnet 2 Summit in Denver.

WE HAVE A DREAM

BY MEGAN ERASMUS In recognition of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s dream of civil rights for all Americans, the BSO (Black Student Organization) showed their support and belief by signing the Six Principles of Nonviolence for all of us. We were also honored to welcome Warren Snipe, a multi-talented performer who now resides in the Washington, DC area, to NMSD. The consummate entertainer has been performing since childhood, and has written powerful poems and songs aimed at breaking down barriers.

The wonderful event is best captured by a quote from Robert F. Kennedy: “Each time a man stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope... and crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and daring those ripples to build a current that can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance.” Warren Snipe’s talents and abilities defy stereotypes, and spreads a message of peaceful advocacy that inspires future generations. Warren also reminded us that we don’t have to be singled out in order to advocate for Social Justice. All we need is love and passion to become an effective contributor. Everybody and anybody can be part of his dream by generating our own dream.

We thank everyone who participated in our celebration of Martin Luther King’s Birthday - and we hope his dream continues to live on in our students!

WINTER SOLSTICE

BY MEGAN ERASMUS The Winter Variety Show always brings the NMSD community together, showcasing amazing and inspirational talents. This year we chose the theme of Winter Solstice - the epitome of rebirth, regrowth and renewal. All the performers did an exceptional job of expressing their emotions through their art.

The show began with a tribute to Mayor Coss, honoring his affiliation with NMSD and his support of the Santa Fe deaf community. Our gratitude and admiration for his kindness kicked off a great show!

The Winter Variety Show’s spirit and zest warmed the full house, melting away the three cold months of winter.

We left the building feeling renewed and reborn, thanks to our gifted performers. We can’t wait to experience it again next year!

ARTIST IN RESIDENCE & SPRING PLAY

BY JOHN JARRETT & STUDENTS How did students describe their experience working with Deaf actor, Robert DeMayo? “Challenging, different, an amazing learning experience, and fun!” DeMayo - an actor, educator and ASL consultant - acts, educates and consults for theatre and film projects. He is also one of the subjects of See What I'm Saying: The Deaf Entertainers Documentary.

Robert came to NMSD as part of our Artist in Residence Program, and has conducted workshops and classes with students. He’s led challenging acting activities, such as repeating one line with increasing degrees of emotion and an exercise using a blindfold to trust others without sight.

With the help of art and drama teacher Abby Longo, students studied playwrights, plays, acting and more.

Students also learned about set design, stage lighting, prop making, makeup application and costume design.

Working with a professional actor like Robert DeMayo gave them invaluable insight into what it is like to be a Deaf actor!

As part of his residency, Robert directed NMSD’s annual spring play, Noises Off. Noises Off, by English playwright Michael Frayn, is a play within a play about an ambitious director and his troupe of mediocre actors. They attempt to put on a play entitled, Nothing On. The cast and crew members forget their lines, lose props, and miss their blocking, as high drama ensues behind the scenes with love triangles gone bad and other disasters. Characters fly into jealous rages at each other, and are battered and bruised by bumping into each other and the set! There is much relief when the cast takes a final bow. Based upon the laughter of the crowd in the James A. Little Theater, the audience enjoyed this physical farce tremendously.

ART BY DESIGN!

BY HEDY UDKOVICH-STERN The state of New Mexico mandates that NMSD must set aside 1% of our campus renovation construction project’s capital outlay funds for artwork via the Arts in Public Places (AIPP) initiative. Connor Hall is the newest recipient of an art installation. Visitors can now witness a dancing glass mobile swinging from the ceiling – radiating positive energy!

A committee comprised of staff members, a student representative, an alumnae Deaf artist, an architect and a staff member from AIPP, screened more than sixty entries from all over the country. Both Deaf and hearing artists submitted proposals. Five finalists came to NMSD to present their ideas, and the committee unanimously decided upon the work of Minneapolis residents Shawn Trentlage and Darcy Ferrill.

Their art project features a hanging silk-screen glass and acrylic sculpture, as well as a wall mount in the outdoor entry area. The design feels playfully creative, skillfully interweaving photographs, hand designs, words and quotes. We are very proud that our art classes - under Abby Longo’s tutelage - helped Darcy create some of the designs. Be sure to stop by to see the colorful additions to Connor Hall and the NMSD campus!

INTERPRETING

EDUCATING STUDENTS: CLASSROOM INTERPRETING AT NMSD

BY AMANDA LUJAN, LENA STAVELY & JULIE NAGLE Classroom interpreting at NMSD is a different take on the Educational Interpreter paradigm. At NMSD, most students have the capacity to learn through visual language, and are on their way to ASL fluency. In this way, voice interpreting support is a means to an end - a step in the path towards a fully immersed child in the Deaf Education setting, autonomous and central in her/his learning environment, and without the need for interpretation support.

How do we guide the child needing support? And, how do we know when it is time to begin phasing out voiced interpreting services? We use the following set of parameters:

• What is the student’s proficiency with spoken language—can they benefit from our services?

• What is the student’s proficiency with receptive ASL (via feedback from native ASL users)?

• What is the student’s proficiency with expressive ASL (via feedback from native ASL users)?

• What is the student’s level of comfort? Can they

understand some teachers and peers better than others? Is there a class where content is more difficult to understand, and the student benefits more from voiced interpreting?

• What are the priorities of the educational team?

At times, we voice for classmate conversations, but not for the instructor.

• What are our vision, mission and beliefs as a school? How is the interpretation we provide facilitating the achievement of our philosophical identity?

These parameters, along with other factors, assist the educational team in determining how to best support students at NMSD who benefit from spoken language and auditory stimuli. The goal is for students to access all aspects of NMSD. In order to do so, we must assess how the placement of an interpreter can benefit or hinder the educational experience. Fortunately, the Interpreting Department and NMSD’s educational team work together to walk this fine line. The goal is to ensure that all students receive the utmost support to meet their individual needs.

LOVE IN THE WILD

BY DAVID ANDERSON Each month, the Student Life Department promotes a theme, chosen to boost students’ enthusiasm for life and learning. In March, we focused on sensitivity toward animals. We feel it is important to educate our students about the importance of humane treatment for living things.

Student Life Educator Mitch Curtis, coordinated two different trips to visit the Wildlife Center in Espanola, New Mexico. The center shelters orphaned, sick or injured animals and helps them recuperate. During our visit, the staff explained the situations that brought the animals to the center. The students had the opportunity to meet and greet a Swanson Hawk, Bald Eagle and a Turkey Vulture. They were captivated by all!

Student Life Educator Maribeth Schneider invited Rick Bearman, the owner of the local pet store, Jurassic Pets, to give a presentation on the different animals in his store. He brought in turtles, snakes, lizards, spiders, birds, rats, rabbits - and even his newly adopted puppy. Rick explained the different breeds of animals and the characteristics of each reptile. His message of respecting animals despite their looks and differences resonated deeply with our students.

As a result of visiting the Wildlife Center and meeting Rick, our learning unit on animals helped the students to become more comfortable and aware of winged predators, breeds of reptiles and other animals. They came to understand that each has a unique way of surviving in the wild. The Student Life Department is thankful to our Student Life Educators for helping instill greater awareness in our students!

A NIGHT OF CELEBRATION

BY KERI-LYNN MCBRIDE Honor Night, a beloved tradition at NMSD, takes place every year on the night before graduation. It is a time of great celebration as students are recognized and honored for their achievements earned throughout the school year. This year’s celebration, held in the James A. Little Theater was well attended by our outstanding students, staff, family members and individuals from the greater community. What an amazing evening it was - there is nothing better than celebrating the accomplishments of our students. In addition, teacher Christine Hartman, was delightfully surprised by Partner’s In Education as a recipient of their Teachers Who Inspire Award!

We are proud of our students’ efforts and motivation and we are also very appreciative of the individuals and organizations that support Honor Night annually through their awards and donations. CENTER FOR EDUCATIONAL CONSULTATION AND TRAINING

NMSD’S FINANCIAL INVESTMENT IN EDUCATIONAL CONSULTATION

BY CINDY HUFF NMSD’s Center for Educational Consultation and Training (CECT) offers a wide array of programming and consultation to school districts statewide – all of them at no charge. As an example of services, during a visit to a district, an NMSD Educational Consultant can observe students, meet with members of the educational team, provide a workshop for staff, teach a model lesson, attend an IEP meeting, consult with district administrators, coordinate a student evaluation and more! State funding allows all of this important work to happen. In addition to educational consultation, the CECT team plans some events that have minimal registration fees attached…..ASL Classes, summer programs (Interpreter Intensive, Family to Family Weekend and ASL Immersion), and the CASA biennial statewide Deaf Education conference.

Currently, the CECT staff is comprised of a Department Director, Department Coordinator, five Educational Consultants, an AmeriCorps Coordinator and six AmeriCorps Sign Language Teachers, and a Department Secretary.

The collaborative work between districts and NMSD is tailored to meet the unique needs of deaf and hard of hearing students attending center-based and mainstreamed programs. While this financial information would not be on the radar of those receiving free consultation, it is helpful for all to recognize the amount of NMSD resources that are invested in district support. The programmatic investment of districts, paired with NMSD’s investment, is vital in making a shared difference in the education of D/HH students.
