What is the Environmental Legislative Framework?

The Kahnawà:ke Environmental Legislative Framework (KELF) is a starting point to create a renewed and culturally-grounded environmental protection regime in Kahnawà:ke. It is informed by community surveys, KEPO and the environmental legislation team.

The KELF recommends: An Environmental Charter.

An Environmental Protection Law. A centralized permitting and assessment office, law, or policy.

What is the Environmental Charter?

The Environmental Charter will be the foundational document that sets out key values and concepts regarding the Kanien’kehá:ka relationship with the natural world and will guide the decisions and actions that could affect the environment. It will ground all other environmental laws, policies and decisions in traditional and community values by requiring them to align with and be interpreted consistently with the Charter.

The Charter will/could include: Statements on source of jurisdiction.

Guiding principles including the Ohèn:ton Karihwatéhkwen.

Overview of aspects of Haudenosaunee Law such as: Haudenosaunee cosmology and the Original Instructions, Kaianere'kó:wa (the Great Law of Peace); Concepts such as: The Rights of Nature and legal

How does the Community Vision fit into this?

The Community Vision will help guide and inform the Environmental Charter.

The Charter is the foundational guiding force for the environmental legislative framework and will reflect the community’s vision for the future of environmental protection in Kahnawà:ke.
