f you’re a comic book aficionado, you’re probably familiar with Ron Marz. He is recognized for his work on Silver Surfer and Green Lantern- he created the iconic Kyle Rayner. Some of his other works include: The 90s DC vs. Marvel crossover, Witchblade and Samurai: Heaven and Earth. Ron lets us in on how he got his big break in comics, his style of writing, future projects and what he’ll be doing at NAICCON 2019.

KB: The range of work you’ve done (and continue to do) is—and we have no other term for it—damn impressive. As a multi-genre creative professional what do you prefer working on? Superhero fiction, sci-fi, historical adventures? What’s your fave genre?

RM: Honestly, I don’t really have a favorite, I like working in all of them.

I like telling different kinds of stories, because it keeps me interested as a storyteller. Stories are like a buffet; I want to try every flavor.

KB: How does writing comic books compare to the other types of writing you’ve done? Like, what aspects do you have to prioritize or take into consideration when writing comics verses newspaper writing, copyediting novels?

RM: Comics are a visual medium, so first and foremost, I write my scripts to be as visually interesting as possible.

In other words, I try to write my scripts so as to give the artist the best opportunity to make exciting pages.

Obviously in journalism or prose, that’s not something you’re considering, because there’s no art. The job in

writing comics is to fit your story into the allotted pages, and make them as visually exciting as possible.

KB: How did you go from writing for a daily paper to working on comic books?

RM: It was all through the grace and kindness of Jim Starlin. I’m friends with Jim, and years ago when I was working at the newspaper, Jim asked me to copy-edit his first prose novel.

He liked what I did well enough that he suggested I think about writing comics. He showed me the ropes, cowrote my first few jobs with me, and introduced me around at Marvel. I’ve been writing comics ever since.

KB: You’re friends with Jim Starlin.

The Jim Starlin. The guy who created Thanos. Wow! So do you regularly hang out and do things like brunch and talk about gauntlets?

RM: Yes, Jim and I have been friends for years. When we lived closer to each other, about five minutes down the road from each other, we saw each other all the time, played racquetball, volleyball, went to dinner. Now we live about an hour from each other, so we don’t see each other as often, but we still get together whenever we can.

KB: Kyle Rayner. Iconic. Where did the inspiration for him come from?

RM: When DC offered me Green Lantern, editorial said they wanted me to create a new lead character. So I wanted to come up with a character who was different from the Green Lantern who already existed. I drew inspiration from the Everyman archetype, so we would have someone who needed to

grow into the hero role, someone the readers could see themselves reflected in. Kyle is definitely cut from the Peter Parker cloth, someone who has to worry about being a hero, paying the rent, and if he has a date for Saturday night.

KB: How involved are you in the visual representation of what you’ve written?

RM: It’s a collaboration with the art team, of course. I try to write my scripts so that the art team has an opportunity to show off and create some appealing pages. But ultimately, the artists are the ones who bring that magic. It’s the best part of the job.

KB: You worked on the 4-issue mini-series DC vs Marvel in the 90s.

What was that like? Is it the fondest memory of your career? (If not, what is?)

the comic, the real details of how that works. But I also want to talk about getting your work in front of an audience. Unlike film or TV, you can get together with a few people, make your comic, and put it online in a very short amount of time. It’s very much a pipeline that goes directly to the audience. That’s hugely useful, especially in an emerging market.

RM: It was the kind of story everyone wants to tell from the time they’re 10 years old. Just so much fun. I have a great many fond memories, but really, the best thing to come out of my career is the friendships with other creators and comics people. My best friends in the world make comics.

KB: Are you surprised by how big the comic book fan base is in Nairobi?

KB: What’s it like collaborating with other comic writers and artists? Do you find that their art can influence the direction of the story?

RM: Yes and no. No, because comics are spreading everywhere worldwide.

I’ve been fortunate to visit conventions in a lot of places, including India, South Africa, Uruguay, Europe, New Zealand.

There’s always a core comic audience.

And yes, because Nairobi isn’t the first place that springs to mind when you think about comics hotbeds; I’m really excited to experience it myself.

RM: Absolutely. One of my jobs as a comics writer is to give the artists I work with something they’re excited about drawing. I love the collaboration, I love the back and forth between writer and artist, so we can create something that neither of us could do solo.

KB: Which one of your indie comic books would you love to see on TV / the big screen and why?

RM: I think it would be between my Samurai adventure, “Samurai: Heaven and Earth,” and my Japanese vampire story, “Shinku.” I know I’m not an unbiased source of opinion, but I think they would both translate quite well.

KB: Why did you take a break from writing your blog Messages from

Marz?

RM: Too many comics to write! But a big part of the industry is promotion and I need to get back to it. Hopefully later this year I’ll get a completely revamped personal website up.

KB: You’ll be leading a comic book writing workshop at NAICCON. Can you give us a little brief of what you intend to address here?

RM: Obviously we’ll get into the creative process of actually making

KB: The year is 2019, Sara Pezzini from Witchblade meets Wonder Woman in NYC and they bond over lassos and gauntlets. Shuri is in the Bronx opening a new outreach centre.

She gets contacted by Nakia who’s in Nairobi fighting Misogybeast, a super-villain responsible for the recent wave of femicide in the city. Shuri bumps into Sara & WW and invites them to Nairobi to kick Misogybeast’s ass. And thus the Femileauge is born! Humor me, am I on to something here? Do I have a budding career in comic book writing or should I just stick to cabbage farming?

RM: I like it! But I suspect you’d be hearing from Marvel and DC and Top Cow’s lawyers!

KB: Tell us a bit about Ominous Press RM: Ominous Press is the publishing company I’m part of, and where I serve as the editor-in-chief in addition to writing comics. We have a pretty eclectic slate of books, including things like the “Dread Gods” and “Demi-God” series, the “Beasts of the Black Hand” graphic novel, Jim Starlin’s “Dreadstar” Omnibus volumes, and a lot more. It’s great to have an imprint where we can publish things we really believe in. Lots more to come.

KB: What else are you working on right now that you’re excited about?

RM: In addition to the Ominous stuff, I’m just finishing up my run on “Turok” for Dynamite, I’ve started on two more series that are not announced yet, and I have two original graphic novel projects on my desk, neither of which have been announced.

KB: You’ve probably been asked this 99999999 times but we’ll ask for the 100th million time. Things might have changed since you last answered. Do you have a favorite and least favorite comic book that you’ve worked on with while with DC & Marvel? What I’m asking, in a very roundabout way, is…Marvel vs DC. No pressure.

RM: I think in general, Marvel and DC are pretty similar, in that they are large corporations with amazing libraries of characters across a bunch of different media platforms. Ultimately, you are serving those needs, which is a great gig. I think the real difference is the particular editor you’re working with.

When you find an editor you click with, you stick with him or her, because that helps you do your best work.

Gaming made in Kenya ZAWADI THE GAME BY SANAA WAVE LAB This game is a 3D open world game hosting several modes: ranging from first/ third person shooter to racing and a variety of survival and story-based game modes. Zawadi did pretty well in last year’s East Africa Gaming Convention and the game developers are particularly proud of the African motions it showcases.

T

he global gaming industry is worth more than the music and film industry combined; and it is still growing. In Africa the industry is starting to diversify; resulting in the creation of games which are more relatable to regional consumers.

Because of its high impact potential, gaming can ultimately become a powerful tool for telling authentic African stories to a more global audience while creating income and revenue across the board.

For most of the developers the journey hasn’t been smooth sailing. Kenyan developers shared with us three major challenges they face within this niche. The first is finding the right talent; there are very many gifted developers but only a few of them have the right skill to capture the minds of gamers. The second is access to capital. Because it is a relatively new area of entrepreneurship, finding financial support can be tricky as most investors do not understand the concept of gaming nor do they want to be associated with it. Finally, since the industry is in relatively budding stages, capturing and retaining new audience interest is an uphill task.

They see this first hand during their networking and marketing efforts.

All obstacles aside, these developers have managed to find reasonable gaming success. Here are three popular Kenyan games. Each of them tells us that their driving force for these games is to showcase Africa to the world. Check out the deets: The specific issue with games is that they are only found on Android.

KADE BY URBAN DESIGN KINGS Kade: Ule Mtoi Mrui is a fun 2D adventure game that recalls the joy of youth. Set in rural Kenya, the story follows a mischievous young boy and his childhood adventures. Armed with a slingshot, the young lad hops, jumps and runs around the farm on a self-imposed mission. This game is especially popular with young children.

All these games are available on mobile and PC, but only for Android users.

The developers have added fun elements to everyday things we take for granted.

Additionally, they manage to educate outsiders on a little local culture.

They have managed to take inspiration from African culture, traditions, art, beliefs, history and mythology and depict normal human societal challenges through epic adventures. Be sure to check them out at this years NAICCON. And support them by playing!

MZITO BY WEZA INTERACTIVE Created by George Ahere, the lead developer at Weza interactive, Mzito is a 2D platformer adventure game. The player acts as one of the first two Mzito characters who go on an epic adventure across 15 majestic locations with an end goal to save Africa. Lacking the time, means and mental power to pursue it daily.

Yes. I look forward to dressing up my grandkids as Batman and Superman, and then refereeing their playgames dressed as Thanos lol.

At the San Diego Comic Convention in California, US. Just because, wow!

KB: Memorable NAICCON moment?

My favorite NAICCON moment was the very moment I walked in with face paint, and seeing everyone’s reaction.

It’s fun whenever there’s positive feedback to an outfit by any of us.

We caught up with some of Kenya’s cosplayers and sought their thoughts on the local scene and the Nairobi Comic Convention (NAICCON):

XAVIER KYALLE KB: What does cosplay mean to you?

As my creative outlet, cosplay allows me to act on my need to make things with my hands. It’s also a very fulfilling way of spending time. Especially when it pays off.

KB: What kind of cosplayer do you consider yourself?

Very selective; I don’t do just any character. And, unlike a few friends of mine who love putting together reasonably simple costumes, I find myself drawn towards making more complex ones. Some of my costumes effectively show off my ability to craft foam props.

KB: Do you see yourself cosplaying in 10 years?

Definitely. I’m having too much fun with it now to stop.

KB: If you could cosplay anywhere in the world, where would it be?

The San Diego Comic Con (SDCC).

KB: Memorable NAICCON moment?

Of course! And hopefully, it’ll become my primary source of income; one way or another.

I’d have to be a bit selfish and say the times I won at cosplay competitions.

It feels really good to work hard on something and to have people appreciate your effort.

I won my first cosplay competition at NAICCON 2017. It is still my most memorable moment from any convention, NAICCON or otherwise.

KB: What is your least favorite thing about cosplaying?

The cost. No lies here; cosplay isn’t a cheap hobby; especially when done with a reasonable level of accuracy to source material.

SUGAR EMCEE KB: What does cosplay mean to you?

It’s an art that reminds me to be limitless; I can be whoever I want to be.

KB: What kind of Cosplayer do you consider yourself?

I identify myself with ‘Maleficent’ best. Her outward appearance can be intimidating, but if you get to know her, she can be a sweetheart.

KB: What is your least favorite thing about cosplaying?

I must say, some outfits can be very uncomfortable and/ or heavy and sometimes challenging to wear.

KB: Do you see yourself cosplaying in 10 years?

Yes! It’s a business I plan to do forever.

KB: If you could cosplay anywhere in the world, where would it be?

My most memorable has to be when the MC called out my name as the cosplay champion in 2018. It’s like time froze just for that moment; and I’m so grateful.

It’s a form of expression for me as an artist to create and bring fantasy into life.

KB: What kind of cosplayer do you consider yourself?

I’m more of an artistic cosplayer, because I incorporate body paint and make up in my looks.

Falling into a creative block from which I can’t seem to move forward.

Yes, I do. I see myself doing it for as long as I can, because it’s fun and it’s also part of my work as

A conservative one. I haven’t done it for some time, but my style is pretty conservative and tomboy-ish. I have a penchant for OP (Black Ops) male characters.

KB: What is your least favorite thing about cosplaying?

Not having the time for crafting. I’ve had my friends help me out with some costumes and to date I remain grateful.

KB: Do you see yourself cosplaying in 10 years?

I would definitely love to attend San Diego Comic Convention because the best of the best cosplayers attend it. They usually host panels for comic related movies and shows. We all know how dope that is!

My favorite NAICCON moment was in 2018. The individuals who cosplayed really brought their A-game and it was just amazing.

Also, it was fun for me because I painted a Rick n Morty T shirt the previous night and still wore it that Saturday. I can say I worked some magic.

Definitely! It would be a wonderful opportunity to share the hobby with my future spawn and to encourage creativity and social skills. Also, I’ll get my chance to cosplay popular dual characters. Think Kiba and Akamaru or Baby Beel and Hilda. The list is endless.

KB: If you could Cosplay anywhere in the world, where would it be?

The San Diego Comic Con. KB: Memorable NAICCON moment?

NAICCON 2014, my first ComiCon. I remember being so hyped for it, because I’d always admired comic cons from around the world; and being able to have one at home was a dream come true. It was so nerve-racking being among the few who actually came in costume. I almost died from embarrassment when we had a Deadpool dance-off.

Hobbs & Shaw

obbs & Shaw (also known as Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw) is a 2019 American science fiction action comedy film that is a spin-off of The Fast and the Furious franchise, starring Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham as Luke Hobbs and Deckard Shaw, characters that first appeared in The Fast and the Furious films.

After a total of eight Fast & Furious movies, grossing over $5.1 billion, the Hobbs & Shaw spinoff is an adrenaline phenomenon waiting to happen. Going by the trailers, the laws of science and physics mean nothing; and we are here for all of it. Get ready for a full-on action-packed blockbuster featuring three buffed up ‘baddies’ and a badass blonde bombshell.

‘Hobbs and Shaw’ introduces the world to comedic frenemies Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson -who literally pulls a plane out of the sky - and Jason Statham. Additional star power comes from self-proclaimed ‘genetically enhanced black Superman’ Idris Elba -who somehow manages to remain unscathed after crashing through a bus window at top speed on a motorcycle- and Vanessa Kirby who more than matches the energy and force her A list co-stars bring to this movie. It’s worth noting that the flick’s soundtrack is a cut off from Jay-Z’s The Black Album.

The plot references to the main costars first beef from 2015’s Furious 7. Lawman Hobbs (Johnson), a loyal agent of America’s Diplomatic Security Service, and lawless mercenary Shaw (Statham), a former British military elite operative, have to figure a way through their animosity to take on Brixton (Elba), a cyber-genetically enhanced anarchist who has gained control of a dangerous bio-threat after

besting a brilliant and fearless rogue MI6 agent (Kirby), who just happens to be Shaw’s sister. Naturally Hobbs and Shaw will be serving us plenty of barbs, banter and humour throughout the film as they take on the only guy who might be badder than themselves to save humanity.

Leaving Vin Diesel from the movie was disheartening enough for fans because he has been a critical lead

character in the Furious franchise.

Still, 2011’s Fast 5 paved way for the sequel blockbuster successes for both 2015’s Furious 7 and 2017’s The Fate of the Furious’. Critics are more than willing to wager that ‘Hobbs & Shaw’ will also break blockbuster records. Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw was directed by Deadpool 2‘s David Leitch. It opens in theatres on Aug. 2.

n the same way conventional sports like football and boxing hold tournaments for top players to compete for cash prizes and notoriety, esports does the same; bringing individual players or teams of players together for battle in competitive video gaming on a professional level. The gaming wave has become wildly popular in the country. Here are some of the biggest esports names in in Kenya:

We asked him how he got started in esports. “I initially played FIFA for personal amusement and as a hobby up until 2013 when I went to a local tournament to test my skill. I won Ksh 20,000 shillings at the then Inntech gaming café in a tournament presented by 2cheze events. Since then, I have been playing FIFA competitively -whether I’m playing with friends or participating in local tournaments’’. He says.

Flossin’s biggest highlights include winning Three PS4 consoles at the scoring gaming lounge in 2015. He also won the Gold cup hosted

by Green Sports Africa. In 2016, he placed third in Vivid Gold’s Ksh 100,000 tournament. Last year he won Ksh 100,000 shillings in the Tric Gaming Café tournament that drew nearly 100 participants. He was a finalist at the East African Gaming Convention. This year, he won the inaugural power gaming convention tournament at KCB sports club and currently sits top of the FIFA University League organized by Ace Pro Gaming.

Gaming Pseudonym: HirsiHD Plays: Fortnite and Call of Duty HirsiHD’S pro-gaming career started out when he got GameCube as a kid. Naturally, he’s racked up a few highlights as well: ‘’Hmm there have been quite a few. Tournament wins like NAICCON and the massive PSG WW2 LAN aside, being among the top 100 in Africa on Fortnite Competitions ranks pretty high. The numerous print and TV features have also given me great memories to look back on. But if I had to pick only one achievement, it would probably be my organization, (The Watchmen) and how far we’ve brought it,” HirsiHD says.

He says the pro-gaming scene in Kenya is fairly large and is growing every day, but in his view the major thing Kenyan eSports lacks is organization.

But he adds that with this sorted, a lot of people are in for a good surprise. He adds that the availability of local tournaments will help bring more international level players out to events.

“In the next few years, pro-gaming is going to be big. I still vividly remember us hosting our first LAN tournament in 2014 with borrowed PS4s and a school projector. The strides that have been made since then are quite frankly insane. It’s extremely exciting to be part of something this massive.’’

He has been playing Minecraft lately because it’s a blast from the past and a good change of pace from the competitive Fortnite and Call of Duty.

Illustrious! Salim Busuru

By Maureen Kasuku Salim Busuru is a co-founder, creative director & illustrator at Avandu Studio. The studio produces Afro-centric comics, illustrations and animations.

He is a self-taught artist whose interest in art was sparked by avid comic book reading and watching Saturday morning cartoons as a kid.

Salim’s skillset is diverse.

Ranging from comic book

illustration, video game creator and animator. His portfolio is quite popular on Artstation- a showcase platform for games, film, media and entertainment artists.

How would he describe his creative process when it comes to illustrations? ‘’I’d describe it as a journey through history, combined with my hope for the future as I reference the present. I say that

because I borrow heavily from our culture through books and other historical material I find in bookshops and the museum. I look at it for inspiration and try to incorporate more modern elements into my sketches while still maintain the cultural aspects of the design.’’ He says. Gaming Pseudonym: Queen Arrow Plays: Tekken 21-year-old Law student Sylvia Gathoni is Tekken royalty!

Thriving in a testosterone driven industry, she got into gaming through her elder brother’s influence. Some of her early memories recall discs with games like Super Mario, Contra & Tappers and of them playing cartridge console games. When they got a PlayStation, she immersed herself into Tekken 5. On joining college in 2016, she began looking into eSports tournaments in Kenya.

In 2017 she competed in the first edition of the East African Gaming Convention and placed fourth. Not bad for her first Mortal Kombat tournament.

Motivated, she got Tekken 6 on PS3

and began putting in some work. She later participated in the Tekken 254 tournament. Although she didn’t come out tops, that’s when she got her big break. XiT Woundz, a professional eSports club based in New Jersey, USA signed her. She’s been participating in tournies ever since.

On her favorite game she says, “Hard to choose. I love different games for different reasons. But I’d have to say Assassin’s Creed is pretty awesome.

And it has educational value too! I know more about the American, French and Industrial Revolutions, the Italian Renaissance, the Golden Age of Piracy and Ancient Egypt from playing the franchise. Gaming Pseudonym: PR1EST Plays: Mortal Kombat Music producer and pro-gamer PR1EST’s sci-fi fascination made him a casual gamer from childhood. His friends as a kid were gamers too and from time to time things would get competitive among them.

He’s part of the pro-gaming Tekken254 gaming community.

PR1EST has won several esports tournies in Nairobi but his biggest achievement was when he placed 2nd in a continent-wide Mortal Kombat tournament organized by the Pro Series Gaming team. MOBAs (Multiplayer Online Battle Arenas) are the biggest thing in e-sports right now.

On the rise in popularity, PR1EST says, “The emergence of better internet connectivity in Africa has opened up another way for African youth to share quality time with friends through gaming. This has led to the rise of MOBA and MMORPG games in Africa; which is great for the African esports scene since more digital traffic is

engaged. Smart investors will soon see the opportunities created by the video game industry. The esports scene in Kenya is rapidly catching on thanks to organizations like Ace pro gaming and Pro Series Gaming.’’

Tournament winnings make up the larger chunk of his income. Being part of an esports team also comes with contractual allowances that give him incentive to train and get better.
