Preparing to Lead

President's Perspective Dear Panther Family, As I walked across campus this morning, I was elated to see our fountain in full operation. We all welcome signs of spring ranging from the return of singing birds to the budding of trees to the sound of a bat striking a ball (which reminds us of the smells of popcorn and peanuts). Even the returning sounds of cicadas fill our evenings with nature's music. For me, watching the spray of water erupting from the center of our fountain is the most pleasant sign of spring. Our students can now spend more time studying or visiting outdoors or playing teqball on the quad. I look forward to seeing faculty leading classroom discussions in our outdoor spaces and groups picnicking under the tent in front of the Winchester Center as the campus awakens from winter's slumber.

The spring season is a time to witness the rebirth of a new year, the wonderful growth we witness, not just in nature but in our own activities and lives. You will see many of our "emerging" stories within this magazine. We are pleased to discuss the Brown Scholars program as we plan for a reunion this summer. In our 70th year in the Owensboro community, the campus continues to bring together students from all facets of our country and globe to receive a wonderful education. The Owensboro connections for which we are so grateful offer an even stronger overall experience for our students as they prepare to lead our society into the next generation. Weather can occasionally turn tragic as was the case in Kentucky when multiple tornados ravaged the area in December. The KWC community rallied in multiple ways to help those who were most affected. You can read about the actions of our baseball alumni and Campus Ministries team who responded to the needs of our neighbors across western Kentucky. I am so thankful to have such a strong and compassionate Panther family.

We are also beginning a new chapter with this issue of the alumni magazine! After my arrival two years ago, I participated in discussions with the campus and community to learn about the hopes and dreams people hold for Kentucky Wesleyan College. From these discussions came our "Three Pillars Plan" to help lead the College into the next decade.

These conversations were invaluable, and the guidance continues to help shape our pathway forward. Our magazine, renamed "Pillars," will take on this positive moniker as we

move boldly into our future. You have helped erect these pillars, and I hope you will continue to be involved as we ensure that we have the support to give our students the best possible higher education experience!

The Wesleyan Way in Action KWC Community Reaches Out to Tornado Victims

On the night of Dec. 10, 2021, Adam Wojtelwicz '90 checked Twitter while relaxing at home in Bryn Mawr, Pa., and realized tornadoes were raging through his native Kentucky. Knowing his friend Chris Gamble's '90 parents live in Madisonville, Ky., Wojtelwicz immediately texted him to make sure they were okay. Upon hearing they were safe, Wojtelwicz went to bed, completely unaware of the destruction in western Kentucky.

On the morning of Dec. 11, Wojtelwicz saw reports of the damage and began texting his old KWC baseball buddies to make sure they were all okay. As they texted, they realized they had an opportunity, a chance to help.

"Everyone always talks about doing something, but it never gets done," said Wojtelwicz. "I wanted to actually do something that would help, not just talk about it."

Realizing this was becoming more than just a little fundraiser, Wojtelwicz hopped on a plane the week after the tornadoes hit and headed to the Bluegrass State to help organize physical cleanup efforts. He got in touch with Josh Overton and Marissa Olivero '17 at the Madisonville Lowes, and they provided a large discount on cleaning supplies. Bill Rosebury, John Lay and Aaron Berry at Camping World in Marion, Ill., donated a generator and $9,000 worth of other goods to the cause. The Panther baseball program donated team apparel for distribution to those in need of clothing. Once they had the necessary supplies, Wojtelwicz and former KWC baseball players Chris "Oscar" Gamble, Tim Rogers '90, Devin Blazier, Barry Oakley '91 and Tom Miley '90 took off to lend a hand. Their families also helped in numerous ways.

I can't thank the KWC baseball alumni enough for the kindness they have shown to me throughout this entire ordeal. This money will allow me to completely refurnish, decorate and finish my new house."

Wojtelwicz and his team worked with Shannon Yarbrough in Earlington, Ky., to provide free BBQ for the tornado victims every day for several weeks. Amy Allen, widow of late KWC baseball alumnus Ricki Allen '90, worked with the team to provide sports gear and financial contributions to many others throughout the area. In Bremen and Earlington, the team worked with Deputy Wade Shoemaker '90 and Stacy Miller, wife of the mayor, to provide over $40,000 worth of supplies and donated goods to the area, along with $1000 in prepaid Visa cards to those needing help with rent and food.

Wojtelwicz also reached out to KWC Campus Ministries.

Thanks to many gracious donations from alumni, Director of Campus Ministries Shawn Tomes '94 and his team traveled to Mayfield with 50 buckets of emergency response items (gloves, cleaning supplies, rags, masks, garbage bags, etc.) to help with cleanup efforts. A few days later, Tomes worked with Wesleyan Kicks [Campus Ministries program to provide shoes to area students] and Shoe Stop [Owensboro shoe store] to provide 250 pairs of shoes to the people of Mayfield. Tomes stated that "due to the nature of donations during these situations, we knew they would be overrun with clothing and food, so with the help of Wesleyan Kicks and Shoe Stop we were able to provide shoes to those in need. People tend to forget about shoes; you don't realize how much you need them until you don't have them." Campus Ministries and Kentucky Wesleyan also provided gift cards to help KWC student-athlete Alonzo "Bubba" Daniel '24 and his family, as his uncle tragically passed away the night of the tornadoes.

"I can't give enough credit to my teammates/brothers on this one" said Wojtelwicz. "This group of alumni makes good things happen when times are toughest. This is what KWC taught us and why we are such good friends today.

Senior Adan Cano Gandarilla describes his first day at KWC in 2018 as unique. "Across campus and in the community, people were smiling and waving, and I couldn't figure out why." He finally realized he was experiencing something new to him – Southern hospitality.

Adan is reflective as he looks back on his KWC years and prepares for the next steps. "One blessing after another got me to this point," he shares. Born in Mexico, he lived in Las Vegas since age 4, except for a year in Texas. "The Rogers Foundation in Las Vegas awarded me a scholarship to KWC. I could never have afforded a college education without their help."

He found a welcoming atmosphere far from the familiarity of home but remembers feeling shy upon his arrival on campus. "I knew it was beneficial for me to be out of my comfort zone and in a place where I had to be independent," he recalls. "I hid in a shell at first, but I eventually gained confidence in the small campus atmosphere."

"Dean McQueen-Ruark is a great encourager," remarks Adan. "She guided me and helped me drop the shell.

She also encouraged me to run for Student Government Association (SGA), which I only considered because she expressed her confidence in me. What a gift."

Adan reflects that by his junior year he blossomed. "This shy person from a big city got involved on a small campus, and it was life changing." He has served as co-captain of the tennis team all four years and has been an SGA senator and food chair the last two years. "As a liaison between students and Food Service, I helped people connect and communicate. That has been good for me."

Board, where he gained experience planning and organizing events, and he founded SOLX (Student Organization of Latinx), a group dedicated to educating classmates about Latin culture. Adan gives Dr. Christine Salmon [director of academic advising] credit for helping start and coordinate SOLX, with gratitude as well to Andrea Denise Bolden [coordinator of equity and inclusion] for her interest and support. "Our most recent SOLX meeting was about the history of Cuba, which included lots of fun facts."

"Director of Campus Ministries Shawn Tomes helped me feel at home when I arrived on campus," says Adan. "He is always available when I need to talk through something.

I've learned and grown through involvement with Campus Ministries. It is a strong and important part of our campus."

Vice President of Facilities and Executive Initiatives Scott Kramer '87 recently returned from a spring break trip to New Orleans with the Rogers' Fellows. "Adan was amazing. He organized the itinerary, accommodations and a marvelous service project. I've seen him grow these last four years through his Wesleyan experience."

Adan says the project to help Gloria, a 74-year-old New Orleans resident, is one of his most gratifying experiences as a KWC student. She was moving to a new home, and the students transported her garden. "She grows fruits and vegetables for her daughter's restaurant, Gloria's Kitchen, and we moved 400 bricks and lots of plants. She was blessed, and we were, too."

"The strong and supportive community at KWC, along with the opportunity to explore and learn about myself, prepared me for the next step. I'm excited." He will be a resident assistant at Vincentian Schenley Gardens, a senior living facility near Chatham, with responsibility for programming events and activities for the residents and ensuring the other 29 RA's complete their volunteer hours.

Adan plans to become a traveling PA after graduation from Chatham. "I want to see the world. Life is too short not to take chances. If it means packing a bag and moving across the country, I'll do it. If you venture out, you never know what you will discover."

The Rogers Foundation was founded by entrepreneur and philanthropist Jim Rogers (1938-2014) and his wife, Beverly. Through his family connections to the College, Jim Rogers recognized and appreciated the value of a Kentucky Wesleyan education. He was the son of KWC graduates Frank Rogers '36 and Lucille (Savage) Rogers '37. The foundation has provided scholarships to college-bound students from Southern Nevada to KWC since 2016.

IN DIVERSITY

In February, the grounds of Kentucky Wesleyan are muted in color and icy in the shade, the promise of spring dotting its bare trees with tiny leaf buds. This time of year, the softball and baseball fields swell with shouts, the Woodward Health and Recreation Center's court echoes the familiar squeak-thud pattern this town knows well, and in its hallways, voices tumble from classrooms with the semester well under way, the walls lined with posters and bulletin boards celebrating Valentine's Day and Black History Month. This year, one board in the Faculty Office Building stands out. Its white letters on a bright pink background display a quote by Dr. King: "I have decided to stick with love. Hate is too great a burden to bear." Pink hearts in each corner emphasize the simple reminder that at the root of the strides we've made in civil rights - is love.

Obviously, many college campuses have not always so overtly celebrated Black history, including ours, but it seems Kentucky Wesleyan was ahead of its time even in the 60s.

George Tinsley '69 came to Kentucky Wesleyan from Louisville to play basketball. During his time here, he recalled how "as much as [the racial unrest] was happening off campus; [it] never showed its ugly head on campus." That contrast was evident in his first year, when men's basketball won the national championship and travelled a lot. "Sometimes we would stay on the bus and were not allowed to eat in restaurants," he said, but "Coach Strong would stand up for us," insisting they come in to eat. As sophomores, many students engaged in Greek life. "The idea of belonging to a fraternity never really crossed my mind," George said, as there was already comradery amongst his teammates.

Then the Jewish fraternity, Sigma Alpha Mu, approached him. "My thought was Blacks can't join based on what I'd heard, but that was not a concern to them. I wound up joining and some of the guys were good friends." They didn't have a Black Student Union then, but Tinsley remembers wanting to start one – as the angst of the civil rights movement was never far away.

Tinsley even remembers Dr. King being shot in Memphis while he and a teammate were trying out for the 1968 Olympics.

But the Kentucky Wesleyan campus was indeed an oasis of sorts.

As a senior, Tinsley became the first African

American male (and Seretha Summers '71, his future wife, the first African American female) to be inducted into the Order of Oak and Ivy. George and Seretha, among less than a handful of African American students in 1969, were also voted May King and Queen that year, and George was voted Most Outstanding KWC Player in 1967. "I'm proud of KWC. I'm proud I went there and proud of the relationships we formed with staff and faculty who may not have interacted with black students otherwise."

Demographics on campus have diversified since then. About "18% of our students are students of color – more than three times Daviess County," remarked Rebecca McQueen-Ruark, vice president of student affairs and dean of students. "For those students, coming to Wesleyan can be a big change, and we want to make sure that all our students feel comfortable, safe, and that they belong at KWC." McQueen-Ruark intuitively echoes our Diversity Statement, which asserts our goal to "exhibit an understanding and appreciation of cultural and human differences."

A commitment to this effort resulted in the hiring of Andrea Denise Bolden in 2019, our coordinator of equity and inclusion, a position that sprouted from a Diversity and Inclusion Task Force chaired by McQueen-Ruark. "It was something that could have probably been done earlier," remarked President Tom Mitzel, "but when the opportunity arose, we devised that position to make sure all of our students were feeling supported."

Bolden (whose grand-uncle Joel Bolden '69 played basketball with George Tinsley) explained her job is to "support our underrepresented student communities and populations" and

provide "engaging educational opportunities for members of the Panther community to coexist, learn and thrive together."

Student data revealed to her the need for "more intentional outreach for male students who identify as African American," leading to the creation of "MALES (Men Achieving Leadership, Excellence and Success)," a program for men who identify with "vulnerable, at-risk, minoritized or underrepresented populations," she explained. Through guest speakers and other activities, they focus on topics such as self-development, mindset and business. Other initiatives include a biannual team-building workshop, a safe space of expression called the IDEA (Inclusion, Diversity, Empowerment and Allyship) lounge, and Panther Currency, a financial literacy program.

Bolden also serves as the Title IX coordinator, NCAA athletics diversity and inclusion designee and the NAACP collegiate advisor for the KWC chapter. Even with this full plate, Bolden believes "there are still many solid efforts that can be carried out," but we are "marching in a positive direction." Despite the pandemic, Dean McQueen-Ruark noted how Bolden "has been able to build bridges across student groups, campus departments and the community that we haven't had before."

The next largest underrepresented population Bolden aims to foster and support more is our LGBTQIA+ students, 24 of whom make up the PRISM club. Bolden also supports our student organization of Latinx (SOLX) and promoted Women's History Month this March.

Meeting the needs of all students is not solely a goal for the Office of Equity and Inclusion but is shared campus wide and stems from our leadership.

Mitzel replied, "What I'd like to be able to do is look mom and dad in the face and say, 'If you trust us with your son or daughter, our goal is to get what is your most precious person from day one to the stage at commencement,' and to do that, we have to help with all the needs of all the students."

Tracy McGee, Rogers Fellow and current president of the Black Student Union (BSU) agrees that "one of Wesleyan's biggest accomplishments has been the addition of [Andrea Denise Bolden] to our staff." BSU's message, McGee said, is "to spread love and justice to each person one day at a time and to enrich the student body's knowledge of Black history." The club's marches, co-organized with Brescia's BSU, is a point of pride for McGee, including the one held on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. In below-freezing temperatures on icy roads, students and community members proudly and peacefully marched. Regarding the 2021 march, President Mitzel expressed pride in last year's march, noting how "they worked with Brescia by themselves, they contacted authorities, and it went so well." The marches "have accomplished so much here," said McGee, "[bringing] attention to our needs."

In response to these marches, George Tinsley said he was "extremely excited," and has made a financial commitment to the Office of Equity and Inclusion in addition to the basketball program. "I'm looking for a lot of great things," said Tinsley, "and I'll help out as much as I can."

That's why Shawn has also built partnerships in the community across "all faiths, all churches, all parishes, all mosques – anywhere and in between," he said, in case students need help finding their own spiritual outlet. He will simply call and say, "We have a college student here - would you like to join us in giving them an opportunity to grow spiritually?"

Ultimately, what's important to Campus Ministries is "loving people unconditionally right where they are and not telling them they're wrong for their beliefs." It's part of The Wesleyan Way, Shawn beamed. "To love and support each other and to honor and respect other people."

President Mitzel is proud of our growth. "The most important thing [Andrea and Shawn] have done is to be available, to offer those experiences and safe spaces where everyone feels welcome and included. Of course, we also consider their lives beyond college.

"Our students are going out into a world that is only going to become more diverse," said Mitzel. "What I want is for our students to be as prepared as possible to be leaders in the next generation. The more exposure they get to different cultures, races, financial levels, demographics, the more informed people they will be."

As our diversity statement further explains, we "[embrace] diversity in all forms, including race, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, socio-economic status, national origin, sexual orientation, disability, religion and thought."

Religious diversity may not be something one would expect a United Methodist-related college to value, but it is.

"The majority of our students are not Methodist," says Shawn Tomes '94, director of Campus Ministries. "We have more students identifying as Catholic, Baptist, Christian and nonChristian."

Shawn arrived six years ago, with the charge that, "we don't want Campus Ministries to be a Christian organization in and of itself that is exclusive," and in committing to that charge, it has grown. Tomes recruited four students in his first year for leadership positions, and there are now 18. "Most of them I couldn't tell you exactly what faith tradition they come from," Tomes said with a smile. "I don't think it's our job to tell people what to believe, regardless of what faith they're from or what their belief system is. We want to give you an

diversity, which also motivate our efforts. A study published in the Review of Higher Education concluded that "diversity aids in the production of citizens for a multicultural society that can result in leadership with greater social awareness and the complex thinking skills to alleviate social problems related to complexities in inequality." In other words, diversity only makes us stronger.

Kentucky Wesleyan feels it can work the other direction, as well. The Rogers Fellows program awards students from Las Vegas with a full scholarship, granting them a new experience here while we appreciate the cultures and experience they bring to our campus. "There were 11 fellows in the first year," said Scott Kramer '87, vice president of facilities and executive initiatives, "and we now have 32 with an 83% graduation rate."

Therefore, to broaden our students' experiences beyond what our campus can offer, KWC arranges travel experiences that push students out of their comfort zones. This May, a study abroad class of Wesleyan and Brescia students will visit Ireland and Scotland. Former programs ventured to Greece, Hong Kong, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, Czech Republic, Italy and England, and smaller trips went to Cuba, Israel, Rome and Athens, and Costa Rica, among others.

But it's not all hearts and flowers, as the pink bulletin board suggests.

When Lydia Dorman '82 addressed the Class of 2016, part of her message was to "see the world." Already a recipient of our Alumni Achievement Award, Dorman received an honorary doctor of law that day and was inducted into our Alumni Hall of Fame the following year. Dorman has travelled the globe extensively, starting in high school when she flew from D.C. to live with a family in a barn in Costa Rica. "You become very self-aware," she recalls.

As the recently retired senior vice president of human resources for Coca-Cola, Dorman has lived in Tokyo, but her travels also include China, Greece, Norway, England and Brazil, where she carried the Olympic Torch in Porto Seguro in 2016. She currently serves on the Kentucky Wesleyan Board of Trustees and Diversity and Inclusion Task Force.

"When you travel overseas," says Dorman, "you're seeing something you wouldn't normally experience in the United States – a diversity of peoples, customs, ethos and mores . . . it allows you to expand your thinking, and it is how you bring the broadness of those experiences back that allows you to round out your contributions [to your community]. It truly makes you a rounder, more in-tuned, more sensitive person."

"In my opinion, Kentucky Wesleyan College doesn't have great racial diversity," admitted BSU president Tracy McGee. "[Outside of] sports, there are only a few minorities."

Bolden shared a similar belief that "there are avenues for growth in our recruitment/hiring practices as it relates to diversity among our staff and faculty. I am the only person of color in my entire division, and similar representation is mirrored in other departments."

While this is true, growth is happening, and not because Wesleyan has a plan to race toward that representation for appearances' sake. "You can't force diversity," said Dr. Mitzel. "You must [first] have the support, the enthusiasm, the community – which I think we have in Owensboro – but in five years I want to still be able to say that everybody feels comfortable here. That they can speak about what they want when they want. Our job is to be a beacon for Kentucky in that pedagogy."

Clearly, we have work to do. We may not be able to force it, just as we cannot force those tiny buds on the trees to make it spring. But our Office of Equity and Inclusion, Black Student Union, Campus Ministries, seeds of wisdom from alumni – even our pink bulletin boards that remind us to love – they are buds of another kind. Growth in diversity is happening here because we welcome it. Because we know it will make us stronger in love. Because that is The Wesleyan Way.

The Liberal Arts Tradition at Kentucky Wesleyan College

Americans have always had a conflicted relationship with the liberal arts. Founding Fathers drew straight lines between liberal arts and self-evident principles. In the new nation, ambitious youth saw the liberal arts as a way to climb social ladders, and by the turn of the 20th century, America's elite made permanent links between leadership, influence and their liberal arts educations.

But the appreciation for the liberal arts was never universal or even popular. Few Americans could access higher education, fewer still graduated from liberal arts colleges that dotted the landscape. The liberally educated considered inaccessibility part of a natural self-sorting.

Woodrow Wilson, while still president of Princeton, saw the country dividing into two classes; one, educated in the liberal arts, and the other, "a very much larger class of necessity in every society," fit for "difficult manual tasks."

Those without a liberal arts background grew suspicious.

If liberal arts degrees were had by only a handful, how could they be democratic? If not democratic, what were they and why would anyone support them? The subjects themselves were esoteric and seemed to lack practicality.

It was hard to imagine how reading Latin, ancient history or classical philosophy could fit someone for farming, navigation or bookkeeping. And so, publicly funded land-grant colleges, forerunners of modern-day flagship universities, were conceived. Liberal arts were part of

those schemes, but the focus was on mining, engineering, agriculture and other more practical arts. But even then, critics blasted the association with high-flown, imprudent learning. One newspaper editorial spoke out against publicly funded colleges, asserting, "We want no fancy farmers, we want no fancy mechanics."

Similar arguments played out in Kentucky. In the waning decades of the 19th century, the gulf between the state's wealthiest and poorest put the liberal arts in an unflattering light. Successful colleges in Lexington, Danville, Georgetown, Augusta and Louisville became political counterpoints. In 1880, nearly half of Kentucky's citizens were illiterate; the root cause of that illiteracy was liberal arts colleges that consumed the attentions of state agents and arrested the growth of public schooling.

Far too many resources went to impractical educations of elites; far too little to common schools and vocational training, or so the argument went.

In the bulletin of 1880, college officials promised, "to do the best we can to improve every young man under our instruction, in both mind and heart . . . to arouse in him a high appreciation of intellectual and moral manhood."

The first College catalog in 1866 The College, yet to receive its name, was generically called "Methodist College at Millersburg, Kentucky."

The Methodist Episcopal leaders behind Kentucky Wesleyan's founding knew these challenges all too well; planting a college, any college, in a thorny patch of uncertain public support was risky business. Sure, Millersburg was a promising spot, situated along the well-trafficked Maysville Road and connected to Paris and Maysville by the Kentucky Central Railroad, but the state's appetite and capacity for another college was uncertain.

Kentucky Wesleyan's board and president held firmly to the liberal arts program despite these questions. Rigorous study of Latin, ancient Greek, history, mathematics, natural sciences, philosophy and theology, complimented by pastoral, rural surroundings, affirmed by a stern honor code, and buttressed

by Biblical principles, honed character. It was a potent message. Enrollment ticked up, graduates attained high positions, and towns and villages throughout the state took notice. When Kentucky Wesleyan outgrew its accommodations and the campus was relocated to Winchester—enmity, and an occasional hail of rotten eggs, followed those responsible for pulling Wesleyan out of Millersburg.

It replaced a building destroyed by fire in 1905. Three columns from the 1906 structure stand as sentinels over today's students in Hocker-Hall Grove.

The sanctity of Kentucky Wesleyan's liberal arts program was tested frequently in those days. The addition of a "commercial department," which brought bookkeeping, shorthand and typing into the regular curriculum, rankled many of the faculty.

The move to "vainglorious" intercollegiate athletics pushed at least one into retirement. In 1902, D.W. Batson, dean of the College and professor of natural science, resigned over the College's decision to allow Kentucky Wesleyan's club football team to play other colleges. Believing they cheapened the collegiate experience and diminished the higher purposes of the liberal arts, Batson petitioned the faculty to punish the players with expulsion. They refused, and he left. A few decades later, the College capitulated to popular demand and added classes in agriculture, medicine and teaching. In their official announcement, College leadership noted their dissatisfaction with the current state of professional preparation and the "tendency toward intensely practical and utilitarian principles." "This tendency," they continued, "has led young people to seek those schools offering the shortest possible courses leading to the higher vocations and preparations." Kentucky Wesleyan College, therefore, extended a "hearty welcome" to those ambitious lost souls and promised success, but only if they committed themselves to the liberal arts.

for vocational programs, the College reaffirmed its commitment to a Christ-centered liberal arts education.

As students in the now coeducational College, young men and women developed esthetic sensibilities, moral foundations, and good, wholesome social enjoyments.

Graduates were fit for any profession; diplomas from Kentucky Wesleyan College were, as one publication announced, "accepted at face value" wherever they were presented.

Kentucky Wesleyan's relocation to Owensboro gave the College another opportunity to define its aims. It was, according to one announcement, a "total school program," linking and uniting campus ministries, athletics, student organizations, buildings and the academic curriculum under a single unified Christian-focused liberal education. The campus's geographical location, close to, but distanced from, urban temptations, was a benefit to the liberal arts emphasis on character development.

"Intimate and restricted influences" gave students the space to develop mentally, physically, spiritually and socially. The College also softened its approach to professional education, seeing the liberal and vocational arts as partners, nearly co-equal aspects of a curriculum that "reinforce and strengthen each other." No longer would the College stand in the way of the vocational motivations; courses and programs were infused with obvious utility.

Arguments against the liberal arts are also propped up by a systemic devaluation of general education coursework, the 60 or so credit hours that have become the heart of liberal arts curriculum at most institutions. The credits have become interchangeable. Many are now completed in high school or granted by competency-based examinations.

We can appreciate the historicity of Kentucky Wesleyan's liberal arts traditions—the need to keep these traditions appealing to newer generations through freshened language—but we can also recognize the limits of that flexibility. We celebrate the accomplishments of our graduates, recognize emerging vocational needs, and at the same time, remain uncompromising in our Christian character. That character gives Kentucky Wesleyan its permanent importance and informs a deeper relationship with the liberal arts, guided by reverence and directed toward education of the whole person. The search for truth, enlightened by disciplinary ways of thinking, deepens our gratitude and humbles us before God's great and wonderful majesty. In that humility, students find purpose along with the courage to follow God's calling.

Education of the whole person fits students for that calling but also prepares them for everything else; the roles they take within their communities, the relationships they build with their friends and colleagues, and the responsibilities they owe to their families. The process of education is imperfectible and life long, but the liberal arts give the tools to find meaning in that pursuit.

Today, debates over the liberal arts have become more emotional, intensified by rising costs, fractious political mistrust and the cult of celebrity. A quick scan of social and

this time, they were pushed outside their normal duties to help us be successful. I am so grateful for our coaches and staff and colleagues for working as a team to support overall student success."

Why did you decide you wanted the full-time position?

The director of athletics position has been a goal of mine for almost 10 years. Many colleagues and mentors motivated me toward this role, and they have offered me opportunities and guidance on the journey. I have also had a wealth of leadership development opportunities within college athletics that helped me grow and learn and prepare for this important leadership role. I will enter my 20th year in college athletics leadership roles in the next academic year.

What goals do you have as vice president and athletic director?

Mark Shook arrived at KWC in September 2019 from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he was the assistant athletic director for academic services. He has a deep background in college athletics with experience at a variety of higher education institutions, and he wanted to serve at a smaller institution where he could make a real impact and difference and get to know the students on a personal level.

Those who have heard me speak know how important a "One Team" mentality is to our culture and success. My goals for our department center around the core areas of our commitment to scholarship, sport, service and life. I want to help improve and maximize the student-athlete experience while producing graduates who are well prepared and ready to enter the world because they were students and athletes at Kentucky Wesleyan College.

What were your observations of the Athletic Department and the College during your tenure as senior associate athletic director?

"I really liked the small college feel. I connected quickly with former athletic director Rob Mallory because we had similar philosophies. The small campus made getting to know people from nearly every campus office that much easier. I also appreciated the faith-based mission of our campus. It was exactly what I had hoped for when I decided to come to Kentucky Wesleyan."

Did those observations change during your tenure as interim athletic director?

"They have not changed but solidified. Each member of my team is valuable to our department's overall success. During

Our alumni and supporters can help us maximize the studentathlete experience in several ways. My plan is to develop opportunities for those who love the Panthers to help us by giving their time, talents and treasure. Making it a priority to attend and support our teams, at least once, when they are in competition is a simple starting point. Our student-athletes, coaches and staff work tirelessly year round to help maximize this experience. Volunteer and financial support will be critical toward helping us achieve our goals in the classroom and in competition. We are working on a renewed effort to build the Panther Athletic Fund as a "team behind the teams" in annual giving, volunteering and reconnecting with our alumni. Stay tuned. KWC student-athletes have continued their ascent to new heights in both athletics and academic pursuits during the 2021-22 academic year. Panthers are making a difference as leaders on campus, in our community and across the NCAA Division II. Enjoy reading about some of these amazing accomplishments and highlights through March 2022 here: Panther student-athletes continued to perform well in the classroom with a 3.13 GPA in the fall 2021 semester. They broke their own record (2019-2020 academic year) of 134 student-athletes named to the G-MAC Academic All-Conference team (3.30 GPA or higher) with 141 student-athletes honored with this distinction in 2020-2021.

At the conclusion of the 2020-21 academic year, the Panthers broke their own record of 134 set in 2020 by having 141 student-athletes named to the G-MAC Academic AllConference team (3.30 GPA or higher). Baseball led the way with 20 selections, followed by women's soccer with 19 and women's track & field with 14.

Women's soccer standout Madisyn Hunt '22 graduated in December as the program's record holder in several categories including career goals (59) and points (134).

Her goal scoring total tied the most ever scored in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference. Hunt was the 2021 G-MAC Offensive Player of the Year and named 2021 Second Team All-Midwest Region by the Division II Conference Commissioners Association.

Panther football cornerback Kishawn Walker '22 was named to four different All-American teams for his success last fall. Walker, a fifthyear senior, was also First Team All-Region and First Team AllConference. He is the only Panther in recorded history to be named to four All-American teams in a single season, surpassing current New York Jets wide receiver Keelan Cole '17, who was named to three in 2016. Walker is the first Wesleyan football player to be named to an All-American team since

Cole in 2016 and the first defensive player since Athletic Hall of Fame Class of 2019 inductee Brian Seider '98 was named to the All-American First Team in 1996 and 1997.

Wiley Cain '23, current KWC and Great Midwest Athletic Conference Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) president, was elected Chair of National Division II SAAC representing all 123,000 student-athletes who compete in the NCAA Division II. KWC student-athletes logged nearly 900 hours of community service in the fall 2021 semester, serving children and youth, disaster relief efforts and faithbased entities throughout our Owensboro/Daviess County community and the western Kentucky region.

Sophomore high jumper Josh Moore became the first-ever male track & field athlete to make the NCAA qualifying mark and competed in the NCAA Indoor Track & Field championships in early March where he finished eighth in the country in Division II. These accomplishments are possible through the support of Panther fans near and far. Giving Chuck '72 and Nancy (King) Schmeal '71

Chuck Schmeal '72 (1946-2022) arranged with his caretakers for travel to campus for a special purpose.

He delivered a donation check to name the Food Pantry and Professional Closet in the Jack T. Wells '77 Activity Center, and his pure joy in making the contribution was palpable and infectious.

Just three months later, his family and friends gathered to celebrate Chuck's life in the Wells Center. The group stood as one with his wife, Nancy (King) '71 and daughters Kellie Schmeal '04 and Jamie (Schmeal) Wellman to offer applause for a life well lived. His engaging smile adorned

the screen behind the podium as he was remembered with incredible stories of love, service, faith and kindness.

Chuck served in the U.S. Army from 1966-1969, and then completed his undergraduate education at KWC, where he met Nancy on a blind date. The couple made a lifetime of memories and shared a love for their Owensboro alma mater for over 50 years. Nancy was a Panthers' cheerleader and a member of Sigma Kappa Sorority.

As friends and family shared stories over soup and coffee following the January service, Nancy and their daughters viewed the temporary signage showcasing the Schmeals' generous support. The Food Pantry and Professional Closet will provide clothes for KWC students who need professional attire for job interviews and internships, as well as food packages for those who need meals.

The Schmeals also joined Chuck's KWC roommate and "brother" Jeff White '72 and his wife, Susan, in funding an endowed scholarship. The White-Schmeal Endowed Scholarship benefits business students and makes a difference for today's students and future business leaders.

"Chuck is smiling, I know, because through his gifts, he is still helping others achieve. Education was very special to him," said Nancy.

Chuck and Nancy gave because the College was a significant part of their lives for decades. Their commitment to education and giving back inspired their investment in their alma mater.

KWC Hoops Visit Rupp Arena Panther basketball took on the University of Kentucky in an exhibition game at Rupp Arena Oct. 29, a memorable experience for fans, players and coaches. The Office of Alumni Relations hosted a pre-game reception, and alumni and friends enjoyed great food and even better company. The Panthers put up a good fight with a final score of 95-72 (L).

The game marked a significant milestone for Joel Utley '74, who entered his 61st year of broadcasting for men's basketball – a national record. The SEC Network aired a portion of Joel's broadcast during the game, icing on the cake on a fun-filled evening.

We enjoyed engaging with the Class of 2022 as we prepared them to enter the alumni world on April 30. Members of the Senior Committee have been working with the Alumni Association Board of Directors to organize their Countdown to Commencement social events, plan their Senior Dinner and organize the fundraising and design of the senior gift. The committee members also enjoyed dinner with members of the alumni board at the Country Club of Owensboro, an expression of gratitude for their service on the student-led committee.

We had a great time celebrating the holidays with members of the Wesleyan family at our Louisville Holiday Party at Woodhaven Country Club, President's Circle Holiday Party at Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame & Museum and our annual Christmas Open House at the President's Home. While the harpist was incredibly talented and the purple Santa Claus was oh-so-cute, the best part of the events was spending a few moments with our extended family during the holiday season.

Sigma Phi Epsilon brothers from the late 60s and early 70s traveled back to Owensboro for a special reunion in October. The fraternity brothers enjoyed a weekend of reliving old memories and making new ones, including a group picture in front of the former SigEp house.

Some would say that after completing 11 mission trips to Haiti, one's urge to help others might be fulfilled. For Brian Hall '87, that was just the beginning.

Following his final mission trip to Haiti where he had been aiding earthquake rebuild efforts, Brian was still passionate about helping others, but ready for a change. He felt led

by God to help with water and water storage systems in sub-Saharan Africa after learning that on average, women there walk 3.1 miles per day to get clean water. "Children often miss school to help their mothers get the family clean water," Brian explained. "And if they don't miss school for that reason, they miss because they don't have clean water to bathe in, and they're too embarrassed to go to school."

How one Kentucky Wesleyan alumnus is changing lives in Africa, one well at a time

Brian found a contact in Memphis, Tenn., who helped him contact leadership in Africa. He raised $8,000 in 2016 for the first wells and sent the funds to Africa, hopped on a plane and prayed that he hadn't been swindled. "I met my new friends at the airport and together, we were able to drill one well and build two 10,000 liter storage tanks, bringing clean water to about 5,000 people," Brian remembered. From there, the momentum grew. "The next year, we did three wells, followed by five, then seven and then 14 in 2021."

In 2020, after a social media push from Brian's former classmate LaDonna Koebel '89, Kentucky Wesleyan alumni got involved in Brian's efforts. Alumni contributed 95% of the funds raised for the well placed in the village of Tingoli in 2020, and then fully funded the well placed in Adupe in 2021. Brian said it means the world to have the support of his fellow alumni. "To know there are people in the United States – people from Kentucky Wesleyan College – supporting this effort means more than I could ever say," Brian shared.

Going forward, Brian's dream is that various affinity groups from the College will band together and each adopt a village. "I'd love to see a Sigma Nu-sponsored village, and I know the Kappa Deltas could join to adopt one. It would be great to see one adopted by the soccer team, too."

The College celebrated the dedication and naming of the Terry Woodward Center for Business Studies in 2020, recognizing his influence as an Owensboro business community leader and his generosity in funding the College's first endowed chair, the W. Terry Woodward Endowed Chair of Entrepreneurial Studies, in 2007.

Bracken Darrell was a 2022 recipient of the Edison Achievement Award. He took several classes at Kentucky Wesleyan and was the 2012 commencement speaker. Darrell is president and CEO of Logitech.

When asked what he would like us to share with his Kentucky Wesleyan family, Brian had this to say: "I'd like them to know what $5 or $20 or $100 means – it means you are changing lives. I can show pictures all day, but you can't truly imagine what these people go through daily. To see the way they are singing and dancing and praising us for providing such a basic human need – it's life-changing."

So far, Brian has raised over $150,000 and impacted over 225,000 people.

Brian's next trip to Africa is planned for fall 2022, and he is hopes they can raise enough money to adopt 22 more villages. "The best part is that the water is secondary. Sharing the love of Jesus Christ in these efforts always comes first."
