The great seal reflects the College’s Methodist heritage at three campuses, including Owensboro and the previous locations in Millersburg and Winchester.

The center of the seal contains the Christian cross with the Lamp of Knowledge, dated 1858, and an open Bible superimposed over the cross. The scripture verses represent the Old and New Testaments and a hand adding oil to the lighted lamp symbolizes the continuance of knowledge.

The upper portion of the inner circle features the four tenets of the College – “Science, Literature, Morality, Religion.” The lower portion of the circle contains the motto of the Kentucky Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church, “Timor domini principium sapientiae,” — “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom,” from Proverbs 9:10.

The three Corinthian columns, originally a part of the administration building at Winchester, provide a tradition-rich backdrop to the beloved Grove. Their presence within the vitality of today’s campus honors the past as the Wesleyan community moves forward.

From the President Hello to the Wesleyan Family!

A private faith-based college education has never been more relevant than it is now. The days of “assembly line” higher education are over. Students must graduate looking, speaking and acting consistently with their unique human qualities and talents, and not like everyone else who went through a pre-packaged program where it is hard to distinguish one graduate from another.

Critical thinkers and problem solvers have never been in higher demand than they are now. Kentucky Wesleyan College is uniquely capable of providing an education that produces these very things, and our focus will be on meeting the societal needs and market demands of today’s world.

The world is changing faster than at any time in human history.

Higher education must realize that technical skill and subject area expertise fall very short of what is required of an educated person who is effective and influential in the new world in which we currently live, and the new worlds in which we will live. To adapt to change, people must have an education that includes the following: 1. The graduate must have learned how to learn.

2. The graduate must have learned how to engage other people and - hold on to your hats for this one—actually sit down face-to-face and talk with others, while reading body language and empathizing.

3. The graduate must have learned the true meaning and value of transferable skills, so that he or she can move effectively into careers that will be developed and of which no one has even heard or thought of yet.

4. The graduate must have a solid foundation of spiritual values that underpin every decision he or she makes, with a clear understanding that their purpose is about things much larger than themselves.

Kentucky Wesleyan College offers an education that helps provide and enhance these very things for its students through “The Wesleyan Way.” It has never been more important, therefore, that we commit ourselves at our highest personal levels to supporting, investing and participating in Wesleyan.

We have had tremendous successes, but they must be only a beginning. We are positioned and, I believe, commissioned to make sure our College reaches the heights it certainly should, so more and more people graduate with the tools and spirit to tackle the world’s most exciting possibilities and most challenging problems. So many in higher education seem to be trying to “create a market” for what they believe they can do well. The “market” for a Kentucky Wesleyan College education already exists and in large numbers. The demand is real, and we have the product.

Please come for a visit, see our amazing students, faculty and staff, and experience the Wesleyan culture, which is unlike any other.

Shawn Tomes ’94

W esleyan Welcomes New Director of Campus Ministries

Shawn Tomes ’94 returned to his alma mater as director of campus ministries on July 1, 2016, after serving as area director of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes since 2013. President Barton D. Darrell shares, “Shawn brings an incredible combination of faith, high energy and a long history of commitment to the personal spiritual growth of young people. He has vast experience in organizing and executing high level programming that will take our campus ministries’ activities to levels not seen before.”

Shawn was an art education major at Wesleyan and earned an M.A.E. degree in school counseling with a secondary emphasis from Western Kentucky University. He previously served as an art teacher, guidance counselor and assistant basketball coach at Apollo High School for eight years. He was also head basketball coach at McLean County High School from 2002-2004. He has served as a youth pastor and is a certified lay speaker in the United Methodist Church.

“I played football at Wesleyan my freshman year, but I was injured at the end of that season,” says Tomes. “When I learned I could no longer be a student-athlete, it was a low point in my life. I lost my identity. My sophomore year was tough and a time of transition for me. I did some soul searching.”

He later met his future wife and became a part of her church family.

“That body of believers loved me right where I was, and they loved me unconditionally,” he remarks. “I had the opportunity to see those Christian men be open and honest and allow themselves to be vulnerable. I began to learn, from the fellowship in the church and through Bible study, what it meant to be a man of God.” Shawn has officially entered candidacy to become a licensed pastor in the United Methodist Church. “He is grounded in a personal United Methodist/Wesleyan faith perspective, while also able to relate to persons of other faith perspectives,” shared Rev. Mark Gibbons, Owensboro District Superintendent of the United Methodist Church.

“My faith is my passion; young people are, too,” says Tomes. “I seek to bring the two together. I don’t want campus ministries to be a separate entity on our campus. I feel God leading campus ministries to serve and partner in every aspect of campus life. Campus ministries exists to serve, love and build relationships.”

Dr. Angelos M. Stergiou ’97

Changing the World

with Benjamin Hoak ’97

Dr. Angelos M. Stergiou ’97 is the founder, CEO and chairman of SELLAS Life Sciences Group. He has held international positions in pharma and biotechnology companies, as well as clinical research organizations in the United States and Europe. We caught up with Angelos to ask him a few questions about his life, his career and his time at Kentucky Wesleyan.

What is your family background, and why did you attend Wesleyan?

“I was born and raised in Germany, but my family comes originally from a poor, remote village in Greece. I have the utmost respect for my parents and will always be grateful for their sacrifices.

With perseverance and hard, diligent work, along with integrity and ethics—which they passed on to me—they started their first restaurant in the late 70’s in Germany. They subsequently opened more restaurants and were able to build a better tomorrow for my sister and me. I learned from them to accomplish my dreams—with hard work, nothing can hold you back. They are indeed my heroes. I was able to come to the United States as an exchange student— the land of equal opportunity, but not of equal reward.”

Tell us about your best memories of Wesleyan.

“My best memories are of the friendships I was able to build with students and professors. The work ethic was high, there was great competitiveness—especially in the pre-med and science programs—but there was also mutual respect and constructive thinking. I have memories of going to the lab at midnight for research purposes and conducting surgeries as part of my thesis, as well as studying for exams.

I had a great time as a resident assistant and research lab assistant and was able to write and publish a Concepts of Biology Research Laboratory Manual at Wesleyan. I also remember the last day after final exams as a senior when I threw a big party at my residence hall. I was still an R. A., so Dean of Student Life Scott Kramer had to “write me up,” but I forgave him, although I tried to bargain with him!”

Describe your relationship with Dr. David Oetinger and other professors.

“Dr. Oetinger was my mentor and, in many ways, my ‘alter ego.’ I learned critical thinking from him and to never take ‘no’ as an answer—you have to keep going and challenge facts. He was by far my most influential professor, and I adopted his favorite quote from Louis Pasteur: ‘Chance favors the mind that is prepared.’ I will always be indebted 6

Dr. Angelos Stergiou with Professor Emeritus of Biology Dr. David Oetinger to him for everything he taught me, including microsurgical processes I learned in his lab. He was also a friend with whom I played tennis. I frequently gathered with other professors around the fountain for a cigar and coffee and talked about science, medicine, philosophy, religion, life and all the topics so important for all of us to think about.”

How did Wesleyan prepare you for your career?

“Wesleyan was the best thing that could have happened to me. The courses and professors were extraordinary, and the students created a strong group. We competed against each other while supporting each other. The College prepared me to take on challenges in my medical, clinical and research profession, as well as in biotechnology. I believe studying hard, challenging the professors and going the extra mile paid off tremendously.”

Has worked in the United States and Europe in pharma and biotechnology companies including PAION AG, Accentia Biopharmaceuticals, BioVest International, Analytica International and Anavex Life Sciences.

Founded and sold Genesis Life Sciences, a boutique New Yorkbased health economics and pricingreimbursement and health access company.

•

Performed elective clinical training in interventional cardiology and surgery at the University of Cologne in Germany.

•

Designed and implemented research projects in the United States, Canada, Australia, Japan and Europe. He was a member of the senior management team responsible for placing one company on the German DAX, as well as one company on the NASDAQ, and has successfully completed merger and acquisitions and license deals.

Why did you launch your company?

“I have always wanted to give back to humanity, and without clinical research, discovery and drug development, we would not have new drugs.

The biotechnology sector is a passion of mine. It combines medicine, research and business, and I truly love doing this every day. The fact that we are currently developing a cancer vaccine with Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center is very exciting and gets me going. The thirst to get to the finish line and get this approved, so we can potentially save lives, is breathtaking.”

What accomplishments are you most proud of?

“I believe my proudest professional accomplishment was the cancer vaccine project I led in non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. This was a very exciting technology, which we had licensed from the National Cancer Institute and developed into Phase III clinical studies. It showed that patients who received our cancer vaccine lived longer.

I am equally proud of the founding of SELLAS Life Sciences Group with my friend and colleague, Miltos Sougioultzoglou, the relationship with Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and further developing this exciting WT1 cancer vaccine. We have already shown that our vaccine appears to be prolonging survival in acute myeloid leukemia, mesothelioma and other indications. We are entering pivotal Phase III studies and have an exciting path ahead of us. My eventual goal is to build SELLAS into a global immunotherapy company.”

Tell us about your family and your interests outside work.

“I am married to a beautiful cosmetic dentist, and we spend time between New York and other parts of the world due to business-related matters. Work takes a lot of time, but I try to travel with Maria Anna as much as possible and combine work with pleasure. I like going to shows, movies and the gym, and I like to read in my spare time. I’m getting more into philosophy and critical thinking. My parents are mostly in Germany, and they spend some time in Greece. I am indeed blessed and thank God for how my life has worked out.”

What was it like to return to campus in May and receive an honorary doctorate?

“It was very special to receive my honorary doctorate in science. The fact that I saw faculty and shared this special occasion with my parents and my wife, who have been with me throughout this journey, will always be memorable. I want to give back to my alma mater and hope to support a biotechnology and research-focused approach at Wesleyan. Without the College, I would not be where I am today and would not have achieved what I have. I will always be grateful!”

What else do you want people to know about you?

“Keep dreaming and keep on going. Make your dreams a reality, and after difficult times, always get back up.”

•• Collaborated with the most internationally renowned academic institutions on clinical research endeavors, including Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, MD Anderson Cancer Center, University of Pennsylvania, Cleveland Clinic, New York University, University of Heidelberg and the Mayo Clinic.

•• Dr. Stergiou is a fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine in the United Kingdom and a member of the World Medical Association, the American Academy of Physicians in Clinical Research, the American Association of Clinical Research Professionals, and the International Society for Pharmacoeconomics and Outcomes Research.

•• He is a frequent guest lecturer and speaker for global biotechnology, clinical development and clinical research and regulatory matters at numerous European universities and Columbia University.

What I Learned from My Grandfather

My maternal grandfather, Dr. C. E. Peeples, was a United Methodist minister and the president of Lon Morris College, a United Methodist institution in Jacksonville, Texas, for over 35 years. He was a Southern Methodist University graduate and was named its “Outstanding Alumnus” in 1993. I was born in Jacksonville while he was president. As a little kid, I used to hang out with him on campus. I clearly remember going to his office when I was about five years old to visit with him and his assistant, Belle. She was a wonderful, highenergy woman who always treated me like I was someone special, just like my grandfather did.

One of my most prized possessions is a picture of me in my grandfather’s lap as he read to me. The picture is in my office and always will be. I was about four years old. I was asked to write this short piece to share what I learned from my grandfather. While there is no way I can share everything, and there is no way I can actually do the things at his level that I learned from him, I will do my best.

The example he set for everyone was the importance of optimism, and that trait may be what I most try to emulate. I have yet to meet a more positive and optimistic person than my grandfather. He had an infectious smile and shared it with everyone. He never saw any obstacle as insurmountable, and he saw opportunity for greatness in virtually every situation. It was difficult to be around him and not feel the same way. I do not recall him being in a bad mood. Certainly he was from time-to-time, but he never let others see it. He did not believe a negative person could lead. My grandfather was always upbeat and wanted others to be the same way. He believed no organization could be great if it wasn’t made up of people with positive attitudes who showed it in all they did.

He treated everyone on campus and in his life as important, interesting, worthy and of equal value. That didn’t stand out to me until I was older and realized that not everyone treated others that way. As a five-year-old, I couldn’t have told you who was the chair of the college’s board of trustees, or who was the student worker in the library. He treated them equally, making no distinction based on their roles at the college, social status, gender, comparative wealth, race, or any other human characteristic or condition.

He was always so interested in knowing every person he met and wanted to make sure they knew he was interested and felt they were special.

My grandfather was competitive. He played college football and sang in the college choir. I remember him singing in church, and I am certain that his college choir was NOT the equivalent of the Wesleyan Singers. He was a terrible singer but sang with passion and commitment. I inherited his inability to sing, but I did not follow his example of singing loudly without regard to talent. I actually think this is the one thing he could have learned from me. But he was competitive in everything he did. He probably set the example for me that is now the third component of The Wesleyan Way. He competed, but did so with the highest level of integrity.

He never took advantage of anyone, but he certainly did not mind winning and succeeding in head-to-head competition. But he did it right.

He could work a room as well as anyone I have ever seen. He would know something about every person he met, and he would know it quickly; where they were from, who their family members were, where they went Darrell with his grandfather, Dr. C. E. Peeples

to church, what they had studied in college, etc. The conversation was about them, not because he wanted to manipulate the conversation, but because he loved people and was interested in every person he met.

My grandfather was loyal. He was loyal to his church. He was loyal to his schools. He was loyal to my grandmother.

He was loyal to his friends. He was loyal to his children.

He was loyal to his grandchildren - including this one. I doubt he ever lost a friend. We all have those few persons in our lives we can call at 2 o’clock in the morning. I would bet he was on that short list for almost every friend he had.

My grandfather’s foundation was his faith. He did not demand or expect everyone to believe in God in the exact way he did. He was tolerant. He met people where they were and accepted people as they were. He never wavered from his belief that we are all created for purposes far beyond ourselves and that every day is an opportunity to grow closer to God and an opportunity to become more effective in helping others improve their own lives.

He never went to work without wearing a suit. I never saw him at his office without his jacket. His idea of casual was taking off his suit coat while sitting in a chair at home reading the newspaper. In my 25-plus years in the practice of law, I never came to work during the week without a suit and tie, and I haven’t here at Wesleyan. Right or wrong, up-to-date or not, that is the way I was taught to present myself, and that won’t ever change. People have poked fun at me over the years about always being in a suit, even at sporting events during the week, and that is fine with me. I do it in tribute to my grandfather and because it is what I was raised on. He told me once that he never wanted anyone at the college to interpret from his dress that he was not totally focused on the serious things others had on their minds.

He was a terrific public speaker. When he got behind the podium or pulpit, he took over the room. I was always amazed at how he could speak to a large crowd and seem to be speaking to each person individually. He was able to accomplish that because he was authentic. He taught me the importance of being who you are and not trying to be like someone else. I have used that lesson when I talk with high school students who visit Wesleyan. I usually tell them what my grandfather taught me: “If you try to be like someone else, you will be disappointed because that ‘someone else’ is already taken. If that is your goal, you have guaranteed that your ceiling is ‘average.’ But if you try to be the best you can be, you have a chance for greatness.”

In 1993, I was fortunate to spend the last week of my grandfather’s life with him in a Jacksonville hospital. He was not conscious, but upon reflection, that didn’t really matter. I have always believed he knew I was there. I sat there every day that week with my grandmother, waiting while he prepared to pass. He died with such dignity and strength. He died demonstrating qualities with which we should all truly live. I suppose that was the last lesson he taught me.

This is only a small sample of what my grandfather did his best to teach me. I hope some of it took. I will not try to be him, as he would disapprove of that goal. But I will always try to move forward with an optimistic and positive approach in all I do, while doing my best to learn from everyone I meet … and always wearing a suit and tie.

Dr. Elizabeth Mauzy Martin ’08

Always a Panther

Dr. Elizabeth Mauzy Martin ’08 grew up three houses away from the Kentucky Wesleyan campus, and the Wesleyan family reached out to her when she was in elementary school.

Carol Poling, President Wesley Poling’s wife, invited her to be a ball girl for the women’s basketball team.

“The team welcomed me and included me.” Elizabeth says.

“They were so nice when they didn’t have to be. That was very exciting to a young and impressionable girl.”

Elizabeth recalls a time when all the women on the Wesleyan basketball team came to one of her basketball games at the Boys and Girls Club.

“What a testament to The Wesleyan Way—they gave their free time to cheer me on,” Elizabeth recalls.

Her time as a ball girl sparked an interest in becoming a Panther someday, and her love for Wesleyan basketball was not limited to the women’s team. Chemistry Professor Dr. W. L. Magnuson presented her with a basketball signed by head coach Mike Pollio and the entire men’s team. “I was ecstatic,” Elizabeth shares.

Dr. Magnuson asked her dad, Bruce Mauzy, what she thought of the ball and recalls that Mauzy replied, “Well, it’s in the bed beside her every night, so I’d say she likes it!” “ Elizabeth says she had a strong impression of Wesleyan throughout high school.

“It was nice to grow up around the school,” Elizabeth says.

“My parents and I were sad when each school year ended and students left for the summer. The campus always had a ‘family feel.’ It was a no-brainer—I knew I would attend Wesleyan.”

Elizabeth became deeply involved when she arrived on campus in the fall of 2004.

“I was a Brown Scholar and played basketball for two years. I also joined Kappa Delta and was a member of the Student Government Association and Student Activities Programming Board.”

Elizabeth says living on campus all four years was beneficial and contributed to her campus involvement and the opportunity to make life-long friends.

One of those friends, Matthew Martin ’08, is now her husband.

“We met as freshmen and were friends throughout our Wesleyan years,” Elizabeth explains. “Our friends always said we should date. We finally took their advice after graduation.”

They continued dating while she was in optometry school at Indiana University and were married in June 2012.

Elizabeth was a biology and chemistry major at Wesleyan.

“I was intrigued by the science programs and the strong reputation of the faculty,” Elizabeth shares. “The science curriculum is very difficult. It was tough, but worth the challenges, because I was very well prepared for optometry school.

“My professors were helpful and encouraging as they pushed me to the next steps,” Elizabeth remembers. “I did a lot of job shadowing, thanks to the encouragement of my advisor, Dr. Henry Connor, and I ruled out several career paths through that process.”

Elizabeth chose optometry after shadowing Dr. Vaughn Sanders in Owensboro.

“I liked the one-on-one time with patients and the opportunity to help people. Vision is one of the most precious things we possess, and that’s a big reason I love what I do.”

Elizabeth attended the Indiana University School of Optometry.

“IU was a great place,” Elizabeth says, “but it would have been hard to go there as an 18-year-old. I gained confidence in the small-school atmosphere at Wesleyan, and I was ready for the rigor of IU’s optometry program.”

Her Wesleyan connections continued during her studies at IU, and Elizabeth interned with Dr. Charles Schertzinger ’62 at RiverPark EyeCare in Owensboro.

“Dr. Schertzinger and Dr. Robert Hamilton were very encouraging and influential,” Elizabeth says.

Elizabeth fell in love with RiverPark EyeCare during her internship, and after graduation from optometry school, she returned to Owensboro and joined the practice. She became a partner in January 2016.

“I really enjoy it. The practice has a family atmosphere, and I treat people of all ages with a variety of conditions. Every day is different, and it is great to be back in my hometown and a part of the community.”

Elizabeth still loves the College she first knew as a ball girl, and that love has deepened over the years.

“Owensboro is fortunate that Kentucky Wesleyan is located here,” Elizabeth reflects. “The College produces tremendous, well-educated graduates. I’ve heard many people in Owensboro say they like to recruit Wesleyan alumni because they are well prepared for their careers.”

Elizabeth joined the Kentucky Wesleyan Board of Trustees in 2015. “It is good to reconnect with my Wesleyan family.

The College has given so much to me and has been a part of my life since I was a little girl. I am honored to give back with my time and resources.”

Why We Give

A generous gift to Kentucky Wesleyan College from Rev. Dr. Glenn ’53 and Charlotte ’56 Morrow Sowards will provide a new campus ministries office behind the chapel. The John Mark Sowards Office of Campus Ministries will be named in memory of their grandson, who passed away at birth on Nov. 5, 2003, and will be dedicated this fall. Their two children, Wesley Glenn Sowards and Julie Ann Sowards Allen, are both Wesleyan graduates. They have four other grandchildren. The Sowards live in Hopkinsville, Ky. Kentucky Wesleyan honored Glenn with an honorary doctorate of divinity in 1975, the Outstanding Alumnus Award in 2006 and election to the board of trustees as an emeritus trustee in 2006.

How did you meet?

Charlotte: “Glenn attended Wesleyan, and he came to a square dance at Owensboro Senior High School, where I was a student. Neither of us remembers what we did on our first date, but we probably saw a movie and then went to Gabe’s for pie and Cokes, because that it was we usually did. We were married in 1954.”

Tell us about your memories of Wesleyan.

Glenn: “I was called to the ministry in high school. My pastor encouraged me to attend a Methodist college, so I enrolled at Kentucky Wesleyan in Winchester. The College moved to Owensboro after my sophomore year. There was tremendous excitement in Owensboro about the new College, which was located in various buildings downtown. The present campus was a cornfield south of town. I remember the thrill of helping break ground for the new student center as president of the Student Government Association.”

Charlotte: “I think of the strong foundations and the friendships of a lifetime formed here. We just had lunch with a group of friends from those years. Isn’t that wonderful?”

Tell us about your careers.

Glenn: “I earned my master’s degree in divinity from Vanderbilt University and served a number of Methodist congregations. I was also district superintendent of the Hopkinsville District and the Owensboro District and was interim district superintendent of the Madisonville District for one year. I retired as minister of visitation at Settle Memorial in Owensboro after 12 years.”

Charlotte: “I earned an M.S. in library science and taught and was a school librarian in several cities.”

Tell us about your lives in the ministry: Charlotte: “We made a commitment together to ministry very early in our marriage. My role model was the wife of my childhood pastor. She loved people and reached out to people. It was my goal to do the same thing. I concentrated on education in the local church, teaching children and leading women’s Bible studies. I was also very involved in United Methodist Women in the Kentucky Conference and the Southeastern Jurisdiction and served as conference president four years. I was a lay delegate to the General Conference of the United Methodist Church twice.”

Glenn: “I always felt called to ministry in the local church, and I never had second thoughts about that calling. I loved visiting members of the congregation and loved to preach. I never forgot the people after we moved. They were very dear to me.

I have to add that Charlotte has been a great partner in ministry, and the church members always loved her.

Every time we left a church, the people said, ‘We are sorry you’re leaving, but is there any way Charlotte can stay?’”

What are your interests and leisure activities?

Glenn: “I collect antique John Deere tractors which I occasionally exhibit. I have a fountain pen collection and enjoy photography and gardening.”

Charlotte: “Books and book fairs. I collect first editions of Kentucky authors, including Jesse Stuart and Janice Holt Giles. I enjoy the antique tractors, too! We also enjoy traveling and have visited a number of countries and U. S. national parks.”

What is the secret of your long-time happy marriage?

Charlotte: “Mutual interests and commitment to ministry.”

After all these years, what does Wesleyan mean to you?

Glenn: “I am grateful for Wesleyan’s strong influence on my ministry, particularly of Dr. Ed Beavin, who taught Old Testament.

When I was pursuing my master’s degree at Vanderbilt, I learned he was well-respected there. He was a giant of Wesleyan history. And I think of where Wesleyan is today. We are encouraged and feel the College’s best days are ahead.

President Darrell is dedicated to The Wesleyan Way; he is a doer and those wheels are always turning. You can almost hear them when you talk to him. The College is moving ahead.”

Why do you give to your alma mater?

Glenn: “We made giving to the College a priority early in our marriage. We are called to give back because the College gave to us immeasurably. We have always felt we could never truly pay for our College educations, because our Wesleyan training and formation has served us throughout our lives.”

Charlotte: “We believe in Christian higher education. Our best avenue of support is Kentucky Wesleyan because we received something very special here. The influence of Christian ministries is vital to the future of Wesleyan, and we are honored to give.”

Roy Pickerill ’75

Living His Dream

Roy Pickerill’s office walls and bookshelves are jammed with decades of Panther memorabilia, and his eyes light up when he shares memories of the College he loves. He will leave his office as sports information director (SID) in the fall and return the next day as a special assistant for college relations in the Office of Advancement, serving as an ambassador for alumni relations, development and public relations. President Barton D. Darrell describes the move as “yet another great enhancement to our advancement and development efforts.”

In announcing his decision to step down from his long-time role as SID, Pickerill says, “This new position is tailor-made for me. I am honored that I can serve the College in new ways. President Darrell is creative and innovative, and I see a tremendous future for Wesleyan.

I am excited to be a part of it.”

Pickerill’s Wesleyan experience began in the fall of 1971 when he arrived as a freshman from Louisville, Ky. “So many of the faculty and staff had an impact on me,” says Pickerill. “They were so passionate about the College and about the students. Their dedication and leadership skills made an impression on me that changed my life.

They cared about each of us; we were individuals to them.” He shares that Dr. Bob Darrell taught him to write, and Dr. John Combs gave him an appreciation of literature. Dr. Henry Connor and Dr. W. L. Magnuson were his general chemistry professors. “They wanted me to succeed,” he remembers, “and they wouldn’t give up on me even when I was about to give up on myself.” Joel Utley was the College’s sports information director during those years and gave Pickerill research projects that ignited his interest in sports information.

He met his wife of 42 years, Margaret Stinnette Pickerill ’75, at Wesleyan, and they were married Oct. 17, 1975, in Tapscott Chapel.

“We were the second couple to marry there,” he recalls. “The chapel was new and the new purple carpet made our eyes burn, so everyone cried at our wedding!” Margaret retired after 28 years as an elementary school teacher.

Roy joined the Wesleyan staff immediately upon graduation and became SID in 1988. He also served as assistant director of public relations for a number of years and as director of public relations for two years. His years as SID include a 23-year run as media coordinator for the NCAA Division II Elite Eight National Championship Tournament. He has earned national awards over the course of his distinguished career, including induction into the College Sports Information Directors of America Hall of Fame in 1999. He was inducted into the Kentucky Wesleyan Alumni Hall of Fame in 2012, as well as the College’s Athletic Hall of Fame in 2015.

His most poignant memories involve campus visits by former scholar-athletes. “Sometimes I see them well up with emotion, and they can’t speak,” he says, “because the College means so much to them. It is magical to see the looks on their faces when they try to speak and can’t.

They say more in those moments than they could say with words.”

“I feel the same way,” he says, “and I haven’t really worked a day in my life because I’ve lived my dream at Wesleyan.”

All Roads Lead to Wesleyan

“I traveled halfway around the world to see the sights of Rome,” says Terrie Vail, “and it changed my daughter’s life forever.”

In January 2015, Terrie booked a flight to Italy on the spur-of-the-moment, and two weeks later she was touring the Vatican, the fulfillment of a life-long dream. Her daughter, Victoria “Tori,” was at home in Greenfield, Ind., completing her last semester of high school.

Terrie struck up a conversation in the Vatican post office with two young American men who were confused about mailing a postcard. “In those few moments, I was quite impressed with them,” she says. “I saw them later, and they introduced me to a professor and two young ladies who were traveling with them. They all presented themselves very well. I wondered what the commonality was.”

Terrie learned they were from Kentucky Wesleyan College in Owensboro. The group included English Professor Tamara Coy and students Brittany Brown ’15, Seth Lasher ’16, Taylor Springel ’16 and David Thompson ’16.

“I told them I wished my daughter, Tori, could be here experiencing the beauty of Rome with me,” she explains. “And then the conversation really took off.”

She shares that Tori planned to major in criminal justice and become a lawyer, but a number of college visits had not culminated in a decision.

“We told Terrie all about Wesleyan, right there at the Nativity scene in the Vatican,” remembers Professor Coy. “I told her about our phenomenal criminal justice program and the successes of our graduates and handed her my card.”

Terrie called Tori later in the day to tell her about Kentucky Wesleyan. The response was less than enthusiastic. “I’m not interested, Mom,” Tori replied.

But an invitation from mom for a girls’ weekend of travel and shopping, including a trip to Wesleyan, sealed the deal.

One month later, the Vails arrived in Owensboro.

They enjoyed lunch with Professor Coy and the students, and Morgan Oakley ’14 gave them a tour of campus.

“Morgan was so welcoming, and she obviously loved the College. That got my attention,” says Tori.

Professor Coy arranged for Tori to visit a criminal justice class taught by Dr. Ken Ayers. “After class, he spoke with me about my plans and preparation for law school,” says Tori. “I appreciated his time. He was helpful, and Kentucky Wesleyan was starting to feel pretty good to me.”

Next on the agenda was a visit with President Barton Darrell in his office. “I couldn’t believe we actually had a meeting

with the president of the College,” says Terrie. “We had already visited a number of schools, and this had never happened before. What I thought would be a brief introduction to the president became an hour and a half meeting.”

“He listened to me,” remembers Tori. “He asked questions and obviously cared about me personally. We talked seriously, and we laughed and cried. He was fascinating. I knew I had found my home.”

“This is it, Mom, this is it,” Tori told her mother as they walked to the car. “I’m coming here this fall. I fit here.”

Terrie says she knew her daughter was serious when Tori taped a photo of herself with President Darrell to the dashboard of her car.

Tori says she felt at home from the moment she arrived on Move-In Day. She joined a sorority (Alpha Omicron Pi) and the Kentucky Wesleyan Singers and got involved in campus ministries and the Monday Night Prayer Group. She describes The Festival of Lessons and Carols with the Wesleyan Singers as the highlight of her freshman year. “I stood in this beautiful cathedral (St. Stephen) and shared music I love. I knew I was a part of something wonderful.”

Professor Coy still marvels at the chance meeting in the Vatican. “Seth and David were mailing a postcard to their beloved professor, Dr. Evelyn Hiatt, and that postcard brought Tori to Wesleyan.”

Terrie says The Wesleyan Way is not a cliché. Tori agrees and says, “The Wesleyan Way is real, and it is everywhere. Mom even experienced it in Rome, and that is why I’m here.”

Inaugural Wesleyan Way Day of Service and Giving Tuesday a Success The Wesleyan family came together to go into the community on the College’s first-ever Wesleyan Way Day of Service on Nov. 30, 2015.

Volunteers (141 students, staff, faculty and alumni) gave 172 hours of their time to serve others in local schools, service agencies and a church.

Giving Tuesday followed on Dec. 1, and the College received $113,054 via 275 gifts from generous investors.

The second annual two-day event is scheduled for Nov. 28-29, 2016.

Eddie Kenny Named Senior Director of Alumni Relations Eddie Kenny joined Wesleyan on Aug. 4 after serving as director of alumni and parent relations at Saint Leo University in Florida since 2010. During his tenure at Saint Leo, attendance for the annual Alumni Weekend grew from 80 to more than 750, and the institution experienced a 400 percent increase in total attendance for alumni-focused events in only five years. A native of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., he earned a B.S. in communications from Florida International University and an M.S. in education/sport management from Nova Southeastern. He and his wife, Wendy, have two children, Katie (8) and Joey (3), and are expecting their third child in October.

Kentucky Wesleyan Receives $1 Million Contribution to General Scholarship Fund

George and Gertrude Greenwell of Owensboro donated $1 million to the College’s General Scholarship Fund in memory of their son, Howard (1955-1992) in September 2015, and in recognition of their investment, the College re-named the library the Howard Greenwell Library & Learning Center. George Greenwell served as a member of the Kentucky Wesleyan Board of Trustees from 1984 to 1993.

He is the founder and former chairman and chief executive officer of Lincoln Service Corporation.

Dr. BC Childress ’05 Elected Alumni Association President Dr. BC Childress ’05, the clinical pharmacy manager at Owensboro Health, became president of the Alumni Association on July 1, 2016. A native of Greenville, he joined Owensboro Health in February 2015 and overseas 30 clinical pharmacists and two pharmacy residents. BC says, “We must evaluate how we operate as an alumni body. I hope to help us become more effective by increasing our role in recruiting new students, serving as a resource to current students and providing guidance to help graduating students transition to active alumni.”

He earned his MBA with a focus in health care management from Sullivan University in Louisville with a postgraduate residency in drug information, then completed a doctorate of pharmacy from Mercer University in Atlanta. He served as a member of the faculty at Sullivan University from 2009–2015.

Alumni Attitude Survey Last winter, Kentucky Wesleyan College conducted its first-ever comprehensive survey to measure alumni satisfaction and obtain feedback on the institution’s communication and engagement efforts relative to alumni involvement.

Nearly 400 individuals responded to this call to action. In the past 15 years, over 500,000 alumni from 230 colleges and universities have completed the Alumni Attitude Study, and our version was branded specifically for alumni of Kentucky Wesleyan.

Giving Tuesday

The Kentucky Wesleyan community participated in Giving Tuesday for the first time in December 2015, and the College received 275 individual contributions totaling $113,054.

Giving Tuesday is a global day of giving fueled by the power of social media and collaboration. Celebrated on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving and the widelyrecognized shopping events, Black Friday and Cyber Monday, Giving Tuesday kicks off the charitable season, when many focus on holiday and end-of-year giving.

Justice Wesleyan is one of only two institutions in Kentucky that has produced a United States Supreme Court justice. Stanley Forman Reed (1884–1980), a 1902 graduate of Kentucky Wesleyan College, was a noted attorney who served as United States Solicitor General from 1935–1938 and as an associate justice of the United States Supreme Court from 1938–1957.

He was a native of Mason County, Ky. The College’s Stanley Reed Pre-Law and Politics Society honors his memory and contributions to society.

We celebrated a newly renovated Kendall Hall after a $3.75 million facelift in 2015.

The completely remodeled four-story residence hall features the addition of an elevator and kitchenette, along with new furniture, plumbing, electrical and HVAC systems.

Love is definitely a part of our alphabet! It is one of our core values and guides how we treat one another on campus and how we take The Wesleyan Way into the world.

We introduced a new tradition, The Wesleyan Way Day of Service, on Nov. 30, 2015. Students, staff, faculty and alumni, 141 strong, provided 172 hours of service to various agencies in the city of Owensboro.

She is one of our most treasured campus icons. The limestone bust of Minerva, the Roman goddess of wisdom, survived the administration building fire in Winchester in 1905. Today she is located between the Barnard-Jones Administration Building and the Winchester Center. Students paint her under the cover of darkness, and she often features Greek symbols, holiday greetings and civic messages.

Panther Athletics

Dear Alumni and Friends, The 2015–16 academic year was an exciting and successful campaign for the Kentucky Wesleyan Athletics Department. There were record-breaking seasons from the women’s soccer squad, who captured a third consecutive 10-win season, and the baseball team, who won 36 games, a single-season record. The men’s basketball team won G-MAC regular season and tournament titles, finished the season ranked 9th in the country, and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2012. Panther scholar-athletes received all-conference honors an astounding 58 times, including three Freshman of the Year and two Player of the Year award winners. Most importantly, 46 scholar-athletes were named Academic All-Conference this summer. The Kentucky Wesleyan family, and our alumni and friends in particular, were there to support us every step of the way. None of this would have been possible without you.

As we look ahead to 2016–17, I expect us to build upon these achievements, both on and off the fields of play. New academic support initiatives will ensure that every scholarathlete has the tools necessary to be successful in the classroom. Updated logos and marks will give the athletics department a fresh and consistent look as we continue to build our brand throughout the region and beyond. I’m very excited about the upcoming launch of the Panther Athletic Fund, the athletic department’s new fundraising arm designed to give our alumni and friends better access for directly supporting their favorite programs. The sky is the limit for what we can achieve!

I am extremely grateful for your continued support, and I am proud to be a member of the Kentucky Wesleyan family. We look forward to seeing you on Homecoming weekend this fall and at other events throughout the year.

Matthew Pobereyko ’15 Signs with Arizona Diamondbacks Former Panthers pitcher Matthew Pobereyko ’15 signed with the Arizona Diamondbacks in July 2016.

As of Aug. 9, Pobereyko had been promoted to Class A Advanced from Rookie League, skipping three levels. He posted a 0.55 earned run average with 25 strikeouts in his first 16.1 innings in the Diamondbacks system. Pobereyko was an allregion honoree his senior year at Wesleyan with a 1.84 ERA and school record 104 strikeouts.

Panther Athletics Coaching Milestones Jamie Duvall ’90 approaching women’s soccer career wins record Women’s soccer coach Jamie Duvall has a chance to pass former coach Larry Kirk’s mark for the most wins (37) in program history. Duvall has amassed 36 victories entering the 2016 campaign.

He has turned Panther soccer into one of the elite programs of the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC). The program is coming off three consecutive 10-win seasons, including last year’s school-record 11 victories. After battling Illinois-Springfield and Southern Indiana in Evansville over Labor Day weekend, the Panthers open their 2016 home schedule on Sept. 15 vs.

Ursuline.

Todd Lillpop ’00 earns win No. 300 to become winningest coach in program history Todd Lillpop earned career win No. 300 this spring after knocking off Great Lakes Valley Conference member Southern Indiana 13-7 on March 12. A former outfielder for the Panthers from 1997-99, the Owensboro native has coached at Kentucky Wesleyan for 17 years, including the past 15 as head coach.

Lillpop has led the Panthers to three straight 30-win seasons (2014–16), including a single-season record 36 victories this spring. He broke legendary coach Denny Potts’ record with win No. 270 on April 23, 2015, against Salem International. Lillpop has now compiled 315 victories during his tenure at Kentucky Wesleyan.

Brent Holsclaw ’94 becomes winningest football coach in school history

With a win over Louisiana College during Homecoming weekend 2015, football coach Brent Holsclaw surpassed John Johnson as the winningest coach in program history, totaling 36 victories during his tenure as he enters his 14th season at the helm.

Women’s Soccer—School record 11-win season and first-ever appearance in conference semifinals

The past two seasons have been the most successful campaigns in school history, as the program has amassed 12 wins during that time. The 2016 season features a challenging schedule that includes the Sept.

10 home opener vs. Davidson College, the first-ever Division I program to visit Owensboro. Other schedule highlights include a Sept. 24 home matchup with former GLVC rival Indianapolis and the Oct. 1 Homecoming tilt vs. Central State.

Miles Mallette notches win No. 200 Softball head coach Miles Mallette won his 200th game last spring. Mallette enters his 12th season at the helm in the spring of 2017 with 208 career wins.

Since joining the G-MAC in 2014, his teams have produced three straight 25-win seasons for the first time in two decades.

The Panthers have finished second in the G-MAC regular season standings for three consecutive seasons. Mallette is second in career victories behind 2016 Kentucky Wesleyan Athletic Hall of Fame inductee Dr. Ken Ayers, who amassed 351 wins during his coaching tenure.

Baseball—most wins in school history (36) Men’s Basketball—G-MAC champions and No. 9 national ranking On its way back to national prominence, the men’s basketball program advanced to the NCAA Tournament for a record 39th time—its first appearance since 2012. The Panthers swept both the G-MAC regular season and tournament titles for the first time since entering the conference in 2013 and entered the NCAA Tournament ranked No. 9 in the country. Head coach Happy Osborne was named G-MAC Coach of the Year.

The season came to an end in the NCAA Midwest Regional, as the Panthers dropped a 74-65 contest at Wisconsin-Parkside, playing on their home floor as the region’s top seed. Wesleyan finished the year with a 27-4 record, including a mark of 19-0 at the Owensboro Sportscenter.

Kentucky Wesleyan is the most tradition-rich program in NCAA Division II history. The Panthers own eight national championships (1966, 1968, 1969, 1973, 1987, 1990, 1999, 2001), 17 Final Four appearances and 87 NCAA Tournament wins.

Panther Athletics Kentucky Wesleyan Hosts Inaugural WESPY Awards Kentucky Wesleyan College hosted the school’s first WESPY Sports Awards dinner in the Jones Gymnasium on April 20 to recognize scholar-athletes who distinguished themselves during the 2015–16 season. Nearly 400 guests celebrated their accomplishments. The winners included: Newcomer of the Year—Awarded to a male and female scholarathlete for excellence in their first season of intercollegiate competition at Wesleyan.

Soccer and Football Alumni Reunite Kentucky Wesleyan College welcomed alumni of the football and soccer programs back to campus in April for a special weekend.

The football program closed its 2016 spring practice season with the annual Purple and White Game on April 1 at Steele Stadium.

Football alumni and their families enjoyed a pre-game reception in the Steele Stadium suites.

The inaugural alumni flag football game followed at Steele Stadium on April 2, followed by a cookout at the President’s Home.

Men’s and women’s soccer alumni returned to campus on April 16 and participated in an exhibition match as part of spring game festivities at Steele Stadium. Following both games, participants and their families enjoyed a cookout at the President’s Home.

Athletic Hall of Fame Class of 2016 Inducted in May

Kentucky Wesleyan College celebrated the induction of the Athletic Hall of Fame Class of 2016 on May 21 at the Owensboro Convention Center. The event was the highlight of a celebratory weekend for these legendary Panther contributors.

These individuals were inducted into the Kentucky Wesleyan Athletic Hall of Fame: Dr. Ken Ayers, Softball Coach (1980, 1983–85, 1987-97)— Dr. Ken Ayers was the first person to serve as the head softball coach, launching the program in 1980 and leading the program to three Great Lakes Valley Conference Championships (1984, ’89, ’94) and two runner-up finishes (1985, ’92) during his tenure.

Dr. Ayers was named GLVC Coach of the Year in 1984 and 1991 and remains the all-time wins leader in any Wesleyan sport with 351 wins over 15 seasons. His teams still hold program records for consecutive winning seasons (7) and 30-win seasons (3). They won a school-record 35 games during the 1996 season. Dr. Ayers currently serves on the faculty as a professor of criminal justice.

J. B. Brown, Men’s Basketball (1985–88)—A first-team AllAmerican in 1988 and member of the Kentucky Wesleyan College All-Century Team in 2010, J. B. Brown was also named first-team All-GLVC and an NABC All-Great Lakes Region selection his senior season. He was a starter and key figure on the 1987 NCAA Championship team and still holds the career record for blocked shots (121). Brown sits 14th on the career scoring list (1,233 points) and 9th in career rebounds with 797.

He played professionally with the Harlem Globetrotters from 1988-95.

Mason Cope, Men’s Basketball (1956-57)—Mason Cope achieved several firsts during his time at Kentucky Wesleyan, including starting in the first Division II Championship game in NCAA history. He was the first Panther drafted by a National Basketball Association team (St. Louis Hawks, 1957). Cope was

a two-time All-American and All-KIAC selection in 1956 and 1957. As a senior captain, he was named NABC first-team AP College Division All-American and was a member of both the All-NCAA Championship and South Region teams, respectively.

Cope became the first player at Wesleyan to average over 20 points per game.

Bob Jones, Men’s Basketball Coach (1972-80)—Coach Jones led the Panthers to the 1973 NCAA Championship with a 24-6 record in his first year at Kentucky Wesleyan. For his efforts, Jones was voted the National Coach of the Year. The following year, the northern Kentucky native kept the Panthers at a No. 1 ranking for six weeks before the squad finished the season as the runner-up in the NCAA Midwest Region. Jones won 119 games during his tenure in Owensboro.

Sam L. Smith, Men’s Basketball (1985-87)—Sam L. Smith was chosen as an NABC second-team All-South Region selection and All-American as a starter on the 1987 NCAA Championship team. He was named Most Outstanding Player of the 1987 title game, as well as the Midwest Regional, and named to the Kentucky Wesleyan College All-Century Team in 2010. Smith was a two-time All-Great Lakes Valley Conference selection and scored 1,115 points in only two seasons.

Cory Wade, Baseball (2002-04)—Cory Wade distinguished himself as one of the most decorated pitchers in school history during his three seasons on campus. He sits third on the career strikeouts list (177), fifth in complete games (14), and eighth in career innings pitched (180). Wade was selected in the 10th round of the 2004 Major League Baseball Draft by the Los Angeles Dodgers and pitched four seasons in the majors with the Dodgers and the New York Yankees. He appeared in four games out of the Dodgers bullpen vs. the Philadelphia Phillies in the 2008 National League Championship Series.

Panther Athletics All-American Club—In 1954, the All-American Club was formed by a group of Kentucky Wesleyan athletic boosters to encourage, promote and support all aspects of the Kentucky Wesleyan athletic programs.

For more than 60 years, the All-American Club has provided funds for the Wesleyan athletic department by soliciting

membership dues and contributions from alumni, faculty, staff, parents and friends of the College and has generated additional funds through special events. The club has always sought to provide a great experience to the young men and women who wear the purple and white.

The 1966 men’s basketball national champions gathered for their 50-year reunion during Athletic Hall of Fame weekend. This special group of 15 players, three managers and coaches Guy Strong and Bob Daniels brought Wesleyan their first national championship in any sport. Led by All-American Sam Smith and team captain Don Bradley, the Panthers defeated Southern Illinois, 54-51, before a crowd of 10,319 at Roberts Stadium in Evansville, Ind., on March 11, 1966, for the NCAA title.

Sam L. Smith was named the Most Outstanding Player in both the championship and the regional rounds. In the title game, Smith led the Panthers with 21 points and 8 rebounds, while

freshman George Tinsley pitched in 11 points and 9 boards.

With 38 seconds remaining, Smith’s hook shot in the lane gave Wesleyan the lead for good, and Tinsley knocked down a late free throw to seal the win. The victory over the top-ranked Salukis avenged two previous losses to SIU during the regular season. The Panthers also defeated No. 10 Central Connecticut State and No. 7 Akron en route to the crown. Head coach Guy Strong was named the 1966 U.S. Basketball Writers Association National Coach of the Year.

Class Notes Lydia Dorman ’82 carries the Olympic Torch Lydia Dorman ’82 carried the Olympic Torch in Porto Seguro, Brazil, on May 19, 2016. The torch began its journey to the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics on April 21 in Olympia, Greece, and arrived in Rio de Janeiro on Aug. 5.

She was also an Olympic torchbearer before the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics.

A resident of Tokyo, Lydia is the senior vice president of human resources for The Coca-Cola (Japan) Company, Limited, which includes responsibilities in China, India, and South Pacific and Southeast Asia countries. She has also served Coca-Cola in Europe and Canada and is a frequent guest speaker throughout the world on such topics as organizational culture, high performance teams and corporate social responsibility and sustainability.

Lydia recently contributed $30,000 to the College’s General Scholarship Fund.

“I feel privileged to give back to Kentucky Wesleyan College, an institution that has been gifting me for over 30 years,” she says.

A native of Washington, D.C., Lydia says Wesleyan shaped a “very sheltered and introverted recluse” who became “a very confident, courageous, adventurous, curious, passionate, well-educated leader.” She explains, “Wesleyan pushed me beyond boundaries I even knew existed or originally felt comfortable pursuing.”

Her list of adventures spans the world and includes a private tour of Buckingham Palace, a dogsled ride across the top of Norway to view the Northern Lights and a walk on the Great Wall of China.

She shares, “I am humbled and enriched by every encounter in communities across the globe.”

She addressed the Class of 2016 at the Kentucky Wesleyan commencement and encouraged them “to see the world.”

Adam Potter is a member of the traveling company of the Broadway musical, Once, and performed at the Shubert Theater in New Haven, Conn., where former president Wes Poling and his wife, Carol, saw the performance in January. The former president and Adam

2000 Beth Linder Benjamin is director of the Owensboro Innovation Academy, which opened in the fall of 2015. Her husband, Brian Benjamin ’98, is an assistant principal at Owensboro High School.

2001 Wesley Basham has a new position as vice president of commercial lending at First Kentucky Bank in Beaver Dam, Ky. Evan and Kelly Nelson Rowe live in Lexington, Ky., and Evan is associate pastor and youth pastor at Midway Baptist Church. Kelly recently returned from her second mission trip to Haiti.

Working with Grace International, her team renovated Grace’s Boys Orphanage in Carrefour near Port-au-Prince.

Kelly also collects cereal boxes for the Apparent Project, a Haitian organization that helps employ local Haitian artisans who recycle the boxes into jewelry and other products. She has sent over 2,000 boxes to the artisans in the past year.

2002 Elizabeth Jones Fitch, formerly a biology professor at Motlow State Community College in Smyrna, Tenn., is the new academic dean at the college.

Eric Flory was named Owensboro Police Department Officer of the Year in July 2016.

Matthew Hughes is the new general manager and managing editor of The Journal-Enterprise, a weekly newspaper in Webster County, Ky. He is the published author of three novels, a collection of short stories and three stories included in anthologies. He serves as organizer of The Providence Literary Festival.

2003 Kamille Eyraud Krahwinkel is preparing to move to Niger, where she will work with refugees. She earned her master’s degree from the University of Kentucky.

2011 Kareem Carr has returned to his hometown, Batesville, Miss., where he is a recreational specialist at the Finch-Henry Job Corps. He ran his first marathon at the Kentucky Derby Festival in May 2016.

Rain Sumner completed the accelerated second program at Bellarmine University and earned her B.S. in nursing in 2013.

She will complete her master’s degree in nursing in August and has accepted a position as nurse practitioner at the Leitchfield Pediatric Clinic. She will be married on Oct. 1.

Luke Shelley recently moved to the Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia, where he accepted a new job with the International Basketball Federation (FIBA). He is the FIBA Oceania communications officer. He recently traveled to the FIBA headquarters in Switzerland and to East Timor, Fiji, Spain and the Philippines.

Douglas “Doug” Kingsley ’61 Assistant Athletics Director Doug Kingsley passed away in Owensboro, Ky., on July 8, 2016. He had served Panther Athletics in many capacities over the years as budget supervisor, travel coordinator, salesman, handyman and friend to many. He had been the department’s business manager since 2011. As a student-athlete, he played baseball for the Panthers.

Kingsley was active in youth baseball and coached in the Southern Little League and the Owensboro Babe Ruth League. He served on the Southern Board of Directors and on the executive committee of the Kentucky Wesleyan AllAmerican Club. He was the recipient of the Cecil Triplett All-American Club Award in 2001 and the Kentucky Wesleyan Alumni Service Award in 2012. He was an active member of Wesleyan Heights United Methodist Church.
