LETTER from the

EDITOR This year was a strange dichotomy. COVID seemed simultaneously like it was over, as masking mandates lifted, and like it was still in full swing, as booster shots and positivity rates continued to permeate the conversation. The campus community returned in prepandemic numbers for the first time in three years, but some classes continued to meet virtually.

Kentucky sports saw both momentous victories and crushing defeats.

The on-campus atmosphere saw a return to normality, with packed football games, Greek Sing, DanceBlue, Cat Walks and Bid Day. Life at UK started to resemble how it did before spring 2020.

This year was also one of hardship. A tornado in western Kentucky left a trail of destruction in its wake, rendering entire towns and communities unrecognizable.

Kentuckians were left to sort through the rubble of their homes and lives in search of belongings and memories left behind.

In every triumph, in every tragedy, the Kernel was there to document this year. Our photographers captured these moments, attending events like President Joe Biden’s visit, traveling to western Kentucky the day after the tornado hit and witnessing historic wins and losses in UK sports.

These are the photos that defined this year at UK.
