KRNL Fashion and Lifestyle is a publication that represents students’ true personality and uniqueness, which we wanted to capture and showcase for you. Your style may be edgy and vintage, colorful and bubbly, or casual and cozy… but whatever it may be, it is your job to embrace it and show off what makes you, you! We promote fall fashion looks and inspirations from local vendors, feature local boutique owners, and highlight Kentucky lifestyle activities so that you can take the information and run with it. For some, this is your first time seeing KRNL Fashion and Lifestyle, and for others, it’ll be your last time seeing it as a student. For me, it is my last year here at UK and I’ve been a part of the Kentucky Kernel since my very first day of college back in 2015. To now be now be Editor-in-Chief of this publication is such a bittersweet feeling because I will soon have to say goodbye to it in the spring. But until then – let’s finish out this semester of 2018 by being the best version of YOU that you can be!

Cool weather tends to be associated with gloominess and dark colors. Just because the temperature is cooler doesn’t mean that you need to sacrifice wearing brighter colors.
I
t’s hard to show off your style once the weather gets too cold.
So, what is the solution? Jackets. It’s easier than you think to find a jacket that matches your style. There are many different styles, from puffer jackets to barn coats. Once you find a style, color, and fit of a coat you like, it is easy to search to find one online you can order. Jackets tend to be one of the pricier pieces in our wardrobe, but they don’t have to be. Simply by searching sites like eBay and Depop, you can find an exact match for a lower price.

Let’s not forget accessories. The next clothing item to switch up is your pants. Pants are not typically the first piece of clothing we think to switch up or use to add color to our wardrobe. Plaid can add muted or more subtle colors if that’s your preference. Solid colored pants, such as red, are also very popular right now because they’re eye-catching, yet chic. Bags are the easiest way to add color into your wardrobe because they’re easy to pair with your outfit. In fact, your bag could be the only piece with color and become a statement piece. There is an endless amount of style options when it comes to bags. Just remember to have fun with your wardrobe and wear what makes you feel most like yourself. Oftentimes there is pressure for what colors and how many colors are deemed acceptable to wear in the winter. Wearing what makes you feel happiest and most comfortable is all that is important.

EASY DRINK RECIPES FOR FALL AND WINTER PAIDIN DERMODY | ILLUSTRATIONS: KAITLYN GUMM
Spice up your drinks this fall and winter with these fun, festive, and super easy recipes. Try them once and you’ll be making them all throughout the holiday season to impress your family and friends. TIP: For small portions, Total Wine sells mini bottles for all of the following products for cheaper prices: Vodka, Blue Curacao, Bailey’s Original Irish Cream, Peppermint Liqueur, and Crown Royal Apple Flavored Whisky.
SPIKED CARAMEL APPLE CIDER This fun take on a classic apple cider will be sure to warm up any cold autumn night. Sit out by a bonfire on a cool evening and enjoy the warmth and spice of this whisky infused drink. Ingredients 1 ½ cups of apple cider 2 tablespoons of melted caramel (Substitution: ½-1 shot of Crown Royal Salted Caramel Whisky) 1 shot of Crown Royal Apple Flavored Whisky Directions Heat apple cider in a mug or glass with a handle until hot. Stir in melted caramel until dissolved into cider. Substitute Crown Royal Salted Caramel Whisky for the melted caramel if a stronger drink is desired, however, this option is more expensive. Pour in the shot of Crown Royal Apple Flavored Whisky and stir. Optional: Top with whipped cream and drizzle with melted caramel. Recipe yields one serving. For parties duplicate recipe however many times you wish and combine in a crockpot to keep warm. Allow guests to serve themselves. Set out whipped cream and melted caramel for guests to decorate their own drinks.
AUTUMN SANGRIA This drink is great for an early fall get together when the weather is still warm from the summer. Sit outside with friends or family while you enjoy the refreshing taste of fall as you watch the leaves change colors.
JACK FROSTY Embrace the cold this holiday season with this wintry mix. This fun winter take on the classic summertime piña colada will have you feeling like Jack Frost himself.
Ingredients 1 Bottle of Oliver’s Soft Red Wine 3 cups of apple cider 4 small-medium apples diced (any variety) 2 small pears diced (any variety) A dash of nutmeg 3-4 cinnamon sticks
Ingredients Agave Nectar Coconut flakes 8-12 cups of ice 1 cup of pineapple juice ½ cup of Blue Curacao ½ cup vodka ½ cup of cream of coconut
Directions Combine all ingredients in a pitcher, and let the mixture sit in the fridge for 6-12 hours before serving cold. The longer it sits, the sweeter it gets. Recipe yields 8-10 servings.
Directions In a blender, combine pineapple juice, Blue Curacao, vodka, cream of coconut, and ice. Blend until smooth. Use more or less ice for desired

consistency. Rim glasses with Agave Nectar and then coconut flakes. Pour blended mixture into glasses and serve immediately. Recipe yields 6-8 servings. BAILEY’S PEPPERMINT HOT CHOCOLATE When you were a kid do you remember coming inside after playing out in the snow? Hot chocolate was your go to drink. Enjoy being an adult with this twist on the classic hot chocolate. Whip up a batch after coming in from the crisp winter air. Sit around a fireplace with family or friends and reminisce while sipping on this warm delight. Ingredients Hot chocolate mix ½-1 shot of DeKuyper Peppermint Schnapps Liqueur (Substitution: 2-3 of Bob’s Sweet Stripes Soft Peppermint Candy) 1 shot of Bailey’s Original Irish Cream Directions Prepare hot chocolate mix as directed in a mug or glass with a handle. Add DeKuyper Peppermint Schnapps Liqueur, or your favorite peppermint flavored liqueur, to the hot mixture and stir. For a milder peppermint flavor, substitute 2-3 of Bob’s Sweet Stripes Soft Peppermint Candies for the peppermint liqueur. Stir candies into the hot chocolate until completed dissolved. Pour in Bailey’s Original Irish Cream and stir. Optional: Top with marshmallows or whipped cream. Drizzle chocolate sauce on top or cover with chocolate shavings or sprinkles. Recipe yields one serving. You can duplicate recipe and keep mixture warm in a crock pot for guests to serve themselves.
CREATIVE LAST MINUTE KORIANA BLEVINS
Halloween is a great time of the year, but we almost always find ourselves rushing around on Oct. 28 trying to put together a last minute costume. Oftentimes when you’re faced with this problem, costumes are difficult to find. If you are good at crafting or know someone who is, you can use that skill to your advantage to throw together your own costume instead of trying to go buy the scraps that are left. Here are a few ideas:
HALLOWEEN COSTUMES Go-to Disney Characters
Disney movies are fantastic, even at 21 years old. A few costumes that may spark your interest this year are Lilo from “Lilo and Stitch” and Kuzco from “The Emperor’s New Groove.” For Lilo, you can find a red tube top from Forever 21 or H&M. Creating a tube top out of a red t-shirt is easy to make, as well. To replicate the grass skirt, you can find green felt from Michaels and super glue grass cut-outs on to a cheap black or green belt from Walmart. The Kuzco costume requires an oversized red t-shirt. Find some gold, white, and red trim or ribbon, and glue it to the edges of the t-shirt. You can buy blue and yellow felt to make the hat and earrings he wears. These are great costumes you can craft 24 hours before you partake in any Halloween festivities.
Hello Horror Movies
A costume that should be on your radar this year is Georgie from IT. This could be a really adorable costume that would be easy to throw together at the last minute. You could wear a yellow raincoat, knee-high rain boots, and a red balloon strapped to your wrist all night. Amazon has an endless selection of yellow raincoats and rain boots. If you don’t own a pair of boots, you can ask around to see if your friends have any that you could borrow. The red balloon is easy. Just make sure you can fill it with helium before your spooky night out on the town.
Fun Couples Costumes
One of the greatest couples costumes this year is Bob Ross and one of his paintings. This idea would be the talk of the party this year. Whoever decides to be Bob, which can be interchangeable, will have to simply find an afro and a beard. Make sure that Bob is carrying around a paint pallet and brush so he’s not mistaken for a 70s dad. Let’s face it, Bob Ross is the 70s dad we all wanted. The painting might be a little more complex, but this is where creativity really shines. You could find an oversized black or white t-shirt and paint a beautiful mountain scene on the front and onto your face. The scenery doesn’t have to be perfect, just give it your best shot. After all, nothing is a mistake, they’re all just “happy accidents.”

A Man, His Dog, and His Records Welcome to POPS Resale. EMI DECK

Off Leestown Road sits POPS Resale, one of Lexington’s oldest vintage stores. Don’t let the hole-in-the-wall appearance of this vintage goldmine deceive you. POPS boasts a large array of whatever you may be looking for, sending you hunting through their curated collection of records, video games, used stereo gear, vintage clothing and more.
Dan Shorr, the owner of POPS Resale, has been passionate about music and electronics ever since his father introduced it all to him at a young age. Shorr grew up in Detroit where his family owned a small business selling and installing car stereos. Later on, Shorr followed his father’s footsteps and ran a three-store chain selling electronics with the help of his wife. When it was time for Shorr and his wife to find a better place to raise their family, they decided to move to Lexington, Kentucky.

Shorr then worked as a manufacturers representative for a few years, but his love for music and electronics, along with his entrepreneurial mindset, left him wanting to open up his own shop. He didn’t know if there was still a market for old records, but he took a leap of faith and opened POPS Resale in May of 1996 and started selling his personal record collection. The records were a big hit and the store has been growing ever since. Shorr’s goal was to sell nothing but Previously Owned Products, hence the name POPS. He
wanted to sell quality goods at a reasonable price. Ninety-five percent of the items sold are used, and he strongly believes used products possess unique characteristics that new ones lack. “Every item here has a story,” Shorr said. “The history of these items is a mystery, but that’s what makes them unique and intriguing.” His philosophy is simple: giving the maximum value for every dollar you spend. The emphasis is always on the customers and their wants and needs. This strong customer relationship is one
of the many reasons why POPS Resale is still thriving to this day. Q: How do you find your items? A: We used to have to hunt them down, but not anymore. We’ve been doing this for so long so people know what we are looking for. They come in with their items and we buy them. People will sometimes donate here and there, but it’s primarily buying and selling. In the beginning, we were buying large collections because we needed stock. Now, we are picky with what we buy. Q: How do you distinguish the value in each of the items? A: That changes over time. For example, the band Journey, two years ago we had two boxes of overstock Journey and they were two to three dollar records. Now, with the popularity of records, we’re lucky to have two Journey records in the store. What used to be a twoto three-dollar record is now sold for seven or eight dollars. This business never stays the same and we have to reevaluate every batch that comes in. Q: Who is your main clientele? A: We have very loyal customers who’ve been coming in here for years. Some have been stopping by as frequent as once a week since the day we’ve opened. There are families that have been visiting with their kids long enough
“Every item here has a story.” that we now have second and third-generation customers. Q: What makes a small business like POPS Resale successful? A: Definitely having those loyal customers is important. Not only customers who continue coming back but ones who bring their friends and family. Word-of-mouth is very big for us. And the other thing is trying to find niches that nobody else is paying much attention to. Q: Do you have any advice for anyone who is thinking of running a small business? A: The best piece of advice I can give to anyone is find things that you’re interested in because that helps a lot, and figure out every penny of the cost you can think of for your first year. Try to figure out a year ahead of time what everything is going to cost such as insurance, inventory, utilities, etc. – then triple it. Because you are never going to figure everything out. Ever. In 2005, Lexington had a major flood which flooded the entire store from front to back. We lost 35,000 records and 10 percent of our clothing inventory. We also did not have insurance because we’re not on a floodplain.
My point is, no matter what you think you have covered in expenses, you don’t. Q: How were you able to bounce back from the flood?
A: To be honest, I didn’t think we would be able to, but we always had back up to stock the shop. Having a large amount of back stock was a big factor in being able to bounce back from the flood. When I first walked into my shop and there was water to my knees, I wanted to just walk away from it. But as weird as it may sound, we have customers who depend on us so I couldn’t do it. There aren’t any businesses like us left. We couldn’t give up because of our customers. Q: You have been a big supporter of the Kentucky Kernel for many years, is there a reason behind your loyalty? A: There are certain things locally that need to be supported. I’m also a sponsor for the Rollergirls of Central Kentucky. I just think there are certain things that not enough people pay attention to or support and someone has to do it. Q: Where do you see yourself and POPS Resale in the next 10 years? A: With my age, it will be time to pass the reins along eventually. I’ll plan to always have a hand in this store. Luckily, I have a wonderful staff who I can trust and count on. They’re great people.

There are some amazing hidden gems in Lexington but three in particular stand out as being some of the best places around town you need to know about: Third Street Stuff, Magee’s Bakery and A Cup of Commonwealth.
T
hird Street Stuff, which is located on the corner of East 3rd and Limestone, is a slice of Seattle. Its menu consists of coffee and bakery items with some vegetarian and vegan options as well. The best feature is their specialty coffee. They have social justice-themed coffee, and this year has been a Black Lives Matter theme that features notable African Americans such as Angela Davis, Beyoncé, and Frederick Douglas. They also have Kentucky Racehorse-themed drinks like Sea Biscuit and American Pharaoh. The coffee is great but the scene makes it greater. There is artwork all over the place and there are couches if you want to cuddle up with a latte on a cold day. They have a social justice library with all sorts of books to read and even purchase. They also have empty notebooks and sketchbooks for you to draw or leave poems in or even practice some calculus. Third Street Stuff is the perfect alternative coffee place that gives off a 90s grunge vibe. It has super cool baristas with

awesome music taste. If you love crazy and cool artwork with great coffee, this is definitely your place. Magee’s Bakery is another great place that has local Kentucky coffee. What makes it so great is the doughnuts. The best part is that their plain glazed doughnuts are only a dollar. The bakery hand makes all of their pastries, and besides doughnuts, they also have other breakfast foods. If you stop in, you need to try their chicken biscuit, which features a homemade biscuit, gravy, and a piece of fried chicken. Nothing says good Kentucky food like some fried chicken with biscuits and gravy. They also have healthier options such as omelets and a few other great dishes. Magee’s Bakery is definitely a morning place so make sure to get there before they close at 2 p.m. It is one of Lexington’s favorites because it is always packed on a Saturday morning and it is a great place for friends and family to gather. With an industrial design and a beautiful mural that is dedicated to farmers, it has a feel to just gather, eat and enjoy. Last but not least, A Cup of Commonwealth is a great coffeehouse that has a cool and relaxed environment with some splendid coffee. It is located downtown at the end of Main Street. The owners and staff say that they want to provide a place of community, service, and culture to represent what they are as a business. If you check out their website, where you can read all about their story, you will get an idea for the feel of their business. A Cup of Commonwealth really focuses on their coffee and has it down to a science. Lexington is full of amazing local gems that you should take a day to try out. Who knows? You might find your new favorite coffee shop.
DRESS UP OR DOWN CATIE ARCHAMBEAU
Have a last minute formal dinner party that you don’t have an outfit for? Maybe you want to look trendy while running errands? There are a few key articles you need in your closet to dress up or down any outfit that can save you in an outfit crisis or help you fit the dress code for any event. First things first: define the dress code. This can easily be done by reading the invitation or asking friends what they plan on wearing. Dress It Up
In a rush and don’t have time to buy a new dress for a formal occasion? Any simple dress or dress pant and blouse can be easily dressed up with the right pair of heels and jewelry. Bigger necklaces and earrings will draw attention to themselves and take away from what clothing article you have on. It’s always safe to keep a few of these bigger statement pieces in your collection when you need to dress up an outfit. Tassel earrings are all the rage right now, grab a set and make dressing up your outfit more fun. Just be sure not to wear too casual of a dress in attempting to pair it with nicer bling. Another huge trend we are seeing this fall that can dress up a casual dress is to throw a blazer or trench coat on top. Also, making sure your hair and makeup is on point will help you look more put together and ready to go. Dressing up outfits doesn’t just pertain to formal wear. Adding a belt, blazer, and block heels to jeans and a t-shirt is perfect for dinner with your girl gang. Dress It Down One of the best trends we are seeing right now is dressing down outfits with sneakers. It’s so fun to pair a simple dress and a bold jacket with a pair of white sneakers. If you want to dress down a dress, throwing a denim jacket over top will be sure to make the look more casual. Another way to easily dress down any look is doing a natural makeup look and maybe throwing your hair up in a cute low bun or ponytail.

JamesC Boutique:
A Father’s Dream Come True AMBER HARRIS

Have you ever heard of places being called hidden treasures? That is exactly what JamesC Boutique is in Lexington, Kentucky. The owner, Carrie Burkett, is a UK alumna who graduated with a degree in Journalism. hile attending UK, Burkett worked at a boutique located in the exact spot where JamesC currently resides. One day Burkett’s father came by and visited her at work and asked her, “Why isn’t this your store?”
JamesC is not just the name of this boutique, but an homage to the first person to launch the idea to Burkett that she should have her own boutique one day: her father, James C. Burkett. Unfortunately, Burkett’s father would not be able to see the dream of his daughter running her own boutique come to life with his own eyes. He was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer during Carrie’s senior year of college and passed away a few short months later. However, before he passed away, he sat down with his daughter to help her create a business plan for what would become JamesC Boutique. “It is such a joy to hear people say his name and they don’t even know him,” Burkett said. Burkett, the single owner of her boutique, made it a point to learn from other business’ mistakes and take them into consideration while running her own business. Burkett learned to not be afraid to be hands-on with her company, so that
is exactly how she is. She works on the floor and behind the desk, always a part of anything that goes on in her store. Burkett hand picks everything she places in her store when ordering online from venders. If a vendor’s clothing does not flatter or fit her customers, she will take that into consideration before buying from them again. Her goal is to please her customers and get styles that she knows they will love and feel great in. “I learn so much from buying online and waiting for stuff to come in. If I don’t like the material, I won’t sell it,” Burkett said. When Burkett is not working the floor — although she usually is— she is taking the

reigns on creating and uploading posts to Instagram and other social media platforms. She also spends her time updating and posting clothing items to her boutique’s website. “I think that it is really important when a customer can see themselves in a post,” Burkett said. The point of her business and the clothing she hand picks is to include and welcome every woman, no matter their body type or styles they made like. “One thing I have learned this year is if something scares you, you’re doing the right thing,” Burkett said, after expressing how terrifying the initial process of opening JamesC was for her. However, she has come to realize that she is doing something right in order to achieve her and her father’s goal of her owning and running her own business. As for the future of JamesC Boutique, Burkett sees the business expanding. She hopes to open another location somewhere in the south. However, just like her style icon, Sarah Jessica Parker, she plans on staying in the city to make an impact on the fashion and business world of Lexington. Above all else, she aims to make her father proud.

With the holiday season around the corner, it is more important than ever that you feel at home on campus.
ow are we supposed to decorate our place cozily while sticking to a college budget? Here are a couple of tips and tricks to make your place comfy and keep your bank happy: Have a few staple pieces, but make the little things count. It is important for the aesthetic to have a few big pieces in your home: shelves, tables, or wall decor. However, accent these pieces with smaller decor. You can find picture frames, trinkets, fake plants, and other things at stores like Target and Home Goods. You can even find some cute floating shelves at Five Below. It is amazing what you can make of smaller items if you accept the challenge. The more decor you have, the cozier your place will feel. That is why you should lean towards the smaller and cheaper items. Be creative with your wall decor. You don’t need artwork for every wall in your place. You can fill up wall space in tons of different ways. It is important to have pictures on your walls for a little reminder of friends and family. Not to mention, pictures and frames are significantly cheaper than canvases. One of the best ways to cover up blank space is

by hanging blankets. You can buy a few simple hooks from Walmart to install in your living room or bedroom and hang your blankets on them. This also creates a warm and cozy feeling in the room. Assuming you already have blankets, this project maxes out at $10. Don’t forget to celebrate the holidays at your campus home. Home is always a little more comfortable when it is decorated for the season. Fall is filled with holidays that have great opportunities for decor. It is the time to go out and buy your pumpkins and lights. You do not have to go all out. A seasonal candle or two can do the trick. It is important to hit the stores at the beginning of the season so that nothing is picked over. The Target Dollar Spot is filled to the brim with seasonal decor, all for under $5. Twinkle lights are another cheap find that can take your apartment from plain to festive for around $6. There is no need to spend a lot of money when creating this home away from home. Figure out what your style is and seek out the good deals around town. Don’t break your bank, just be creative with your decorating.
LOCAL HOLIDAY FESTIVITIES PAIDIN DERMODY
Don’t just sit at home this holiday season. Get out and enjoy the festivities going on right here in Lexington. Our city is home to some of the best holiday celebrations around, so go out and explore with your family or friends. The best part is that you won’t have to break the bank on gas to enjoy these local activities. All of them are in pretty close proximity to campus, and walking or carpooling is highly encouraged to cut down on costs. Check out one or all of these and you’ll be sure to be in the holiday spirit after your experience: The Annual City Tree Lighting Since 1913, Lexington has kicked off the holiday season with a local tradition, the lighting of the city tree. This year, the festivities will start on Saturday, Nov. 24, at Triangle Park. The celebration will begin at 3 p.m. and continue on until the tree lighting at 6:30 p.m. when Santa Claus will flip the switch to light up the city tree. Visitors can enjoy food vendors, arts and crafts vendors, and live music throughout the day. This is the perfect activity to get you in the mood for Christmas. There’s something almost magical about watching a Christmas tree being lit for the first time of the season. Ice Skating at Triangle Park Make it a night of fun out at Triangle Park and go ice skating after the city tree lighting. The tree is just a short walking distance from the rink. The rink opens this year in mid-November and will be open through the beginning of January, so plan a trip anytime. You can bring your own skates, but skate rentals are included in the price, which is just $12 for 90 minutes on the ice. Ice skating is open for the public from 4-10 p.m. during the week, 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Saturdays, and 1:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Sundays. This winter wonderland is the perfect group activity, and it could also be a romantic setting for a fun holiday date. Barker’s Christmas Tree Farm Feel like decorating a tree with your roommates or family at home? Head on over to one of Lexington’s many Christmas tree farms. At Barker’s, they have a great selection of white pine, canaan firs, norway spruce, concolor fir, and douglas firs out in the field that you can go cut down yourself for the ultimate tree picking experience. They also have pre-cut Fraser Firs for sale if sawing down a tree is not your thing. All trees are individually priced starting at $33 and
up. Be sure to take cash or your checkbook with you because Barker’s doesn’t accept card. The farm will open on Nov. 24 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. After that, they will be open Mondays through Fridays from 3:30-6 p.m, Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sundays from 12-6 p.m. Barker’s is located at 1500 Deer Haven Lane, Lexington, KY 40509. Take your decorating game to the next level this year with a real Christmas tree that you personally selected. Southern Lights Kentucky’s largest light show is right here in Lexington at the Kentucky Horse Park. Southern Lights includes a 3-mile long light show with scenes that highlight our beloved horse culture. The show also features a walking portion where visitors can enjoy hot chocolate, Christmas music, and local vendors selling the perfect Christmas gifts. The driving route is open nightly starting Nov. 17 through Dec. 31 from 5:30-10 p.m. Tickets are $15 per car Mondays through Thursdays and $25 per car Fridays through Sundays. Christmas lights almost always get anyone in the Christmas spirit. Be sure to check out this year’s show at Southern Lights. ELF The Musical This year, Keeneland and Central Bank are bringing ELF The Musical to the Lexington Opera House and you won’t want to miss it. If you haven’t seen the movie Elf, then you haven’t fully experienced all that the Christmas season has to offer. Watch the movie, and then plan an outing with your friends or family to see the show performed live. The show premieres on Friday, Nov. 16, at 7:30 p.m. and runs through Sunday, Nov. 18. The full schedule of dates and times can be found on the Lexington Opera House website. Tickets are on sale now on the website, but pri ces are subject to change. Buddy the Elf will be sure to give you some Christmas cheer this holiday season to get you ready for winter.

While hot chocolate and twinkly lights definitely get you in the Christmas spirit, nothing says it’s the holiday season more than friends and family coming together to enjoy some festive (albeit competitive) fun. Holiday party games are just the thing to get even the grinchiest person to enjoy any upcoming family gatherings. Create your own games or take notes on the following suggestions to make the most of your time with your family and friends this holiday season:
The Saran Wrap Ball If you enjoy watching those you love do ridiculous things for entertainment, then this is the game for you this holiday season. Don’t worry because you can join in on the fun, too, and everyone can laugh at each other as you all frantically try to unwrap the saran wrap ball to get more prizes. Here’s how you play: First, you are going to need a roll of saran wrap, or more depending on the size of the ball you want to make. The more gifts you want to add to the ball, the more saran wrap you are going to need. Next, start packing in the prizes. You can include gifts like candy, packs of gum, chapsticks, cash, scratch off tickets, gift cards, small jewelry items, and if the players are over 21, those small $1 alcohol bottles. Really you can put anything in there that you want and think others will enjoy. Remember to put the most valuable items in the center of the ball. Tightly wrap all of the prizes into the saran wrap until you have a nice sized ball. You’ll need a pair of oven mitts and two dice. Gather your group into a circle and wait for hilarity
to ensue. Give one person the ball to start and have them put on the oven mitts. The person to their right will roll the dice until they get doubles. While they are rolling, the person with the ball will try to unwrap as much as they can, keeping any prizes that fall out during their turn. As soon as the person with the dice rolls doubles, it is now their turn to have a go at unwrapping the ball. Pass the ball and the mitts to them, and give the dice to the next person in line. The oven mitts definitely make the game harder, but that’s the fun of it. Watch as your family and friends struggle to win the most prizes, and then have a go at it yourself. White Elephant Gift Exchange
Another game that you can play during the holiday season with your friends and family is the White Elephant Gift Exchange. This game is also known as Dirty Santa or Yankee Swap. For this game, you have to prepare beforehand by having each of your guests bring a wrapped gift to the party. Most groups set a low price limit for these gifts, such as $5 or $10. When all of the wrapped
gifts have arrived, place them in the middle of the room. Write out numbers for each of your guests and have everyone draw. For example, if there are 12 guests, have everyone draw a number between 1 and 12. Now, you are ready to play. Whoever drew the number “1” gets to go first. This person gets to pick a gift from the pile and unwrap it. The person who drew the number “2” goes next. They can choose from the pile of gifts and unwrap another gift, or they can “steal” the gift that has already been opened. If this person chooses to steal, leaving the original gift possessor without a gift, they get to choose another gift or steal. This goes on until someone chooses to open a gift from the pile again. You continue taking turns in numerical order and everyone has the choice of stealing a gift or opening a new one. But here is the catch: every gift can only be stolen three times. Once a gift is stolen for the third time, it is off of the table and the current possessor gets to keep said gift. This is a great game for a group of friends or families. You can send out instructions with your invites
so that your guests come prepared for the fun. It’s a perfect Christmas Eve game to give everyone a preview of Christmas morning where they will get even more gifts. Have fun with this gift exchange game this holiday season. It always makes for great fun and a little family rivalry. Pin the Nose on Rudolph Pin the Nose on Rudolph is a classic game that is fun to play for all ages. Take a trip down memory lane with your friends and family this holiday season by being a kid again with this festive party game. All you need to play is a poster of a reindeer up on a wall, some sort of red ball (like a clown nose) with adhesive or a pin so that it can stick to the poster, and a blindfold. Whoever wants to go first gets the nose, has the blindfold put on them, and then is spun around. Their goal is to try to get the nose as close to the correct spot on the reindeer as possible. Take turns and whoever gets the nose the closest wins and can get a prize. While this game is very simple, it is extremely entertaining to play at any holiday party with kids, friends, family, or even coworkers.
