The first game of the season. Opening afternoon. Would the Cats be able to dominate a team with their defense? Would the new QB1, Terry Wilson, be able to slice up a lower-tier team with his quick feet? No, and no. The Cats didn’t storm out of the gate as expected, though they did dispatch the Central Michigan Chippewas 3520. The defense held well,

KENTUCKY 27, FLORIDA 16 It was a curse 31 years strong— until Sept. 8, 2018. Kentucky football hadn’t won a game against the Gators in decades, but the Cats changed that narrative in Gainesville in week two of the season. The widely credited Kentucky defense forced the Gators to punt on the opening possession of the game, resulting in UK covering 91 yards down the field, including a 29-yard touchdown pass from Terry Wilson to receiver David Bouvier to put Kentucky on the board. Florida led with a 10-7 advantage heading into halftime, but the Cats came out of the locker room ready to take back the lead. Wilson showcased his athletic abilities at the 9:49 mark when he ran 24 yards into the end zone for a touchdown after a 66-yard drive, largely led by running back Benny Snell. After the extra point the Cats led 14-10, and the Wildcat defense forced Florida to punt in the following possession. Wilson struck again, this time hitting his favorite target Lynn Bowden for a 54-yard touchdown in the third, and after the extra point, Kentucky had a 21-10 advantage. Neither team would go on to score until late in the fourth quarter, when Gator quarterback Feleipe Franks connected with Freddie Swain for a touchdown pass, cutting UK’s lead to 21-16. A 30-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown by Davonte Robinson sealed the deal for the Cats, and the curse had finally been broken. Back in Lexington, UK fans— mostly students— took to State Street to celebrate. They chanted “Go Cats” and “F*** Florida,” they threw trash cans and they attempted to burn a couch cushion despite the pouring rain. But the celebrations grew too rowdy and eventually broke up when the crowd flipped over a car multiple times.

only allowing 255 total yards of offense from the visitors. The primary problem, however, was the short field they were often working with. Wilson coughed up the ball three times in his first Division I game, twice through the air and once by fumbling. He completed a pass to Lynn Bowden in the second quarter that was also fumbled, prompting

UK to send in backup quarterback Gunnar Hoak. It took big games from Benny Snell Jr. (125 yards rushing, two touchdowns) and A.J. Rose (104 yards rushing, two touchdowns) to keep the visitors at bay. What it did prove, however, is that even at their worst, the Cats can still beat a less talented team by a healthy margin.

KENTUCKY 48, MURRAY STATE 10 The third game was covered by the dark cloud of tragedy that struck Kroger Field the afternoon of UK’s 48-10 domination of in-state FCS opponent Murray State. Marco Shemwell, a four-year-old UK fan, was struck when a driver allegedly veered up onto the sidewalk where Marco was walking. Marco passed away. A few days later, and the UK football team honored the Shemwell fam-

ily during the difficult time. As for the actual football game, the Cats were able to steamroll a much less physically developed Racer team that took the field against them that day. There were only two UK drives that didn’t end in scores, and one of them was because the Cats were kneeling out the game clock. The Cats did fumble twice (again) but were able to recover both, minimizing the damage. With the game

well in hand by halftime, UK was able to give snaps to plenty of other players that were either redshirting or hadn’t broken into the rotation. Terry Wilson, Benny Snell Jr., A.J. Rose and Danny Clark all notched rushing touchdowns while Allen Dailey had his first UK reception and touchdown with his two catches on the afternoon. The Cats were 3-0 for the second season in a row and looked very strong.

KENTUCKY 28, MISSISSIPPI STATE 7 By the time week four rolled around, the Cats were 3-0. After a historic win over Florida, the team was starting to turn heads, but the Kentucky unit was still doubted. Snell used that motivation of the doubters to help lead his team to a 28-7 win over the thenno. 14 ranked Mississippi State in front of a crowd of 60,037. Junior Snell, who rushed for four touchdowns to break a Kentucky career record, tallied 173 yards in the win. After a scoreless first quarter, the Bulldogs’ quarterback Nick Fitzgerald waltzed into the end zone on the first drive of the second quarter to go up 7-0 with the extra point. Several possessions later, the Cats put themselves on the scoreboard with Snell’s

first touchdown of the game, a two-yard rush, and Miles Butler’s extra point tied the game up at seven. A Snell one-yard rush in the third quarter would give the Cats their first lead of the game— a lead from which they wouldn’t look back. Perhaps Snell’s most thrilling score was in the fourth quarter, which was made possible by defensive back Tyrell Ajian’ss 35-yard interception return. Wilson handed the ball to Snell, and he was off 36 yards for his third score of the game. One last touchdown run came with just under four minutes to go from a Snell 23-yarder to put the Cats ahead 28-7.

Through the turmoil of recent UK football seasons, one of the dependable wins the Wildcats could walk away with nearly every season was their conference game against South Carolina. The Cats had already beaten the Gamecocks on their home turf and in Lexington twice each, building a small winning streak of their own in the SEC. At the end of the first quarter, though, fans were shifting nervously. The Cats had failed both their third down conversion attempts, and the teams were tied at three points each. UK turned on the jets in the second quar-

ter, rushing for 113 yards in that period alone while forcing Gamecock quarterback Jake Bentley to complete only three of his 11 pass attempts with an interception. The Cats led 24-3 at halftime and didn’t need to score again in the game. The Gamecocks managed a touchdown, finishing the game 24-10, but the turnovers created by Kentucky proved to be too much. Bentley threw three interceptions and the Gamecocks lost one of their three fumbles as UK’s first-half cushion let them open conference play undefeated. Their five-game winning streak over South Carolina is still alive.

KENTUCKY 14, TEXAS A&M 20 Week six brought the Wildcats their first loss of the 2018 Kentucky football season, which was on the road at Texas A&M in College Station. The Cats were without one of their most valuable members of the defense in Kash Daniel, who had to sit out the first half against the Aggies due to a targeting penalty the week before against South Carolina.

Kentucky’s only offensive touchdown came toward the end of the first quarter when Wilson connected with receiver Bowden for a 54-yard pass good for a touchdown. After the extra point, the Cats led 7-0. The Wildcat defense managed to hold quarterback Kellen Mond and the rest of the Aggie offense scoreless until the end of the

second quarter, when Mond found Quartney Davis for three yards for a touchdown and tied the game up with the extra point. The Aggies held Snell to just 23 yards in the first and half, and the junior would only come up with 60 yards total on the game. A scoreless third quarter would be followed by one in which both teams earned seven, Kentucky being saved by

defensive backs Derrick Baity and Darius West. Baity forced a fumbles, which was recovered by West and returned 40 yards for a touchdown. Butler’s extra point tied the game at 14-14 at the end of regulation. Butler had a field goal attempt that came up short in overtime, giving the ball to the Aggies, who used a Trayveon Williams 10-yard rush to win the game.

KENTUCKY 14, VANDERBILT 7 MICHAEL CLUBB I STAFF Kentucky Wildcats quarterback Terry Wilson breaks off from a defender and runs with the ball during the game against Vanderbilt. University of Kentucky football defeated Vanderbilt University 14-7 to become 6-1 on the season on Saturday, Oct. 20, 2018, at Kroger Field in Lexington, Kentucky.

Having one of the best running backs in the SEC helps if your quarterback is having the least productive day of his career at UK. Against Vanderbilt in week seven, Terry Wilson was a complete no-show. The Cats had only three completed passes, looking more like a triple-option team than a balanced offense that belonged to a Top 15 team. All of Wilson’s completed passes went to Lynn

Bowden, who finished the day with 18 yards. Luckily for Wilson, one of those was a five-yard touchdown that helped his day look somewhat better. Luckily for everyone else on the blue side of the field, Benny Snell suited up that day. He ran for 169 yards against a smaller Vanderbilt front seven, averaging 5.3 yards per carry. Wilson got in on the rushing action much more than the passing as he neared 100 yards

on the ground, finishing the 14-7 win with 91 yards on 12 rushes. The defense also covered miscues, holding the Commodores to just 284 yards of offense, 68 of which came on the ground. They sacked Vandy quarterback Kyle Shurmur four times and added eight more tackles for loss. All-American Josh Allen accounted for two of the sacks, further building his reputation as an elite pass-rusher.

a pass interference call while attempting to catch the pass. The ball wasn’t caught, but the call gave the Cats a fresh set of downs. On first and goal, a Wilson two-yard pass to senior C.J. Conrad in the end zone won the game, improving UK’s record to 7-1.

The Kentucky defense was the x-factor the Cats, seeing as they held Mizzou without a first down on eight second-half possessions. A seven-point underdog to the unranked Tigers, the Cats found ways to score in the win despite their offensive woes.

KENTUCKY 34, GEORGIA 17 The game that decided the SEC East went through Lexington. The UK fan base, borderline intoxicated with the success of the season and only an overtime loss to their name, was certain their Cats would be competing in the SEC Championship in Atlanta. That did not happen. The Cats were outclassed by the Bulldogs and their brutal rushing

attack, suffering 100-yard games from both D’Andre Swift and Elijah Holyfield. Swift broke out an 83-yard run on the Cats to run away with the game. That long touchdown run put the Bulldogs ahead 28-3, cementing their permanent lead. Terry Wilson had an incredibly efficient day through the air, completing 23 of his 29 pass attempts for 226 yards and a touchdown. He was, how-

Benny Snell finished with just 73 yards on the ground against the perennial national contender that went on to play Alabama to the wire in their SEC Championship game. The Cats may not have beaten Georgia, but their 34-17 loss didn’t get them run out of their own stadium.

Middle Tennessee came to Lexington boasting a powerful offense that played to keep pace to overcome an underachieving defense. The Raiders were 7-3, just like the Cats, and had an extremely successful C-USA season on their way to UK’s Senior Day. The offense was led by coach’s son Brent Stockstill, who went wild against the Cats. He completed 30 of his 33 pass attempts for 293 yards, but that’s the

only area the Cats found difficulty in against the visitors. Senior Mike Edwards showed out in his last home game, taking an interception for a touchdown on his second snap of the game.

As soon as he came back into the game, he forced a fumble that was picked up by Davonte Robinson. That turnover ended in another UK touchdown, this time a rush from Benny Snell Jr. As the game progressed, Stockstill found his groove

and the Middle Tennessee offense pressured the Cats, but the early separation gained by Mike Edwards cemented UK’s win and they were able to keep pace, winning 34-23. Snell finished the game with 116 rushing yards, while quarterback Terry Wilson was an efficient 1014 for 121 yards through the air. The Cats finished their regular home season with a single loss and were moving on to Louisville as a happy bunch.

In the annual Governor’s Cup, the Cats routed in-state rival Louisville Cardinals 56-10 in an offensive frenzy. The orchestrator of Kentucky’s offensive successes, Wilson, accounted for a whopping 340 yards and four touchdowns. He completed 17 of 23 passes for 261 yards through the air and rushed 79 in his biggest game as a Wildcat. A total of six Kentucky players scored touchdowns in the rival game, showcasing the team’s depth and youth. One of the more promising offensive connections was that of Wilson and Bowden— Bowden caught two touchdown passes of 28 and 13 yards, and six total receptions good for 86 yards. Wilson had a score on the ground for himself, while Snell rushed for two touchdowns, and Josh Ali, A.J. Rose, and Kavosiey Smoke each added one.

KENTUCKY FOOTBALL SOLIDIFIES ‘CULTURE CHANGE’ WITH 27-24 WIN OVER PENN STATE ORLANDO, Fla.— The culture has changed: Kentucky is a real football school. UK football solidified this status in a 27-24 win over Penn State in the VRBO Citrus Bowl Tuesday. “Believe me, we had a great belief in our locker room,” head coach Mark Stoops said after the game. “We didn’t have to do anything special, just be us.” Stoops said it was important to the players and program “to collect the trophy and to win 10 games and win a game on New Year’s Day.” In its last two bowl games, the Kentucky foot-

ball team has faced a prevalent attitude that its opponents were too good for them. Last year, UK lost to Northwestern, 24-23. This year, the Cats at one point led 27-7, then withstood a near-comeback from the Nittany Lions to win its first bowl game since 2009. This culture change seems to have been the plan all along, according to coaches and players, and Stoops said “there’s no question” that this team is the one that changed it. C.J. Conrad, who played his final game as a Wildcat Tuesday, said it means a lot to him that this team will go down in history. “A lot of us came here,

and we had a plan when we stepped foot on campus,” he said. “And that was the plan, to change the culture of Kentucky football.” Conrad attributed the Cats’ reaching that goal to the players, their “brotherhood” and their willingness to stick the course. Linebacker Kash Daniel said that winning this game helps with recruiting, but also “with getting just the brand of Kentucky football out there more.” “Hopefully it’ll get some people to stop talking crap about us, but I doubt that’ll happen,” he said. “It’s alright, though.” Running back Benny Snell shared the sentiment:

He said at the postgame press conference that the Cats set the record straight today after coming into this and other games as underdogs. “For me, I just want BBN and the fans to know that this group, especially with myself, we give our all… Even when, you know, teams are smack talking and we’re the underdogs coming into the game, such as Mississippi State or Florida,” he said. “We set the record straight that this is Kentucky football, we’re not just about to lay down.” Nor does this seem to be a temporary change. Stoops said there is a difference

between a climate change and a culture change, with a climate change as the easier thing to do. “Culture is deep, deep, deep rooted for a long, long period of time,” he said. “And, you know, it takes a lot to overcome and change that. And these guys did that.” Stoops said the upperclassmen have set an example for the younger players to follow in years to come. “We have very good, young kids and we’re excited to get to work with them,” Stoops said. Redshirt sophomore A.J. Rose, for example, played backup to Snell all season at running back. He

improved his rushing total by more than 400 yards from last season and recorded his first touchdown during the 2018 season. And DeAndre Square, who had significant playing time in what is normally the ineligible Jordan Jones’ spot, finished with the third most tackles for UK (6), one of which was a sack. “DeAndre had a hell of a game, Chris [Oats] had a hell of a game, too,” Daniel said of his fellow linebackers. “And it just shows how hungry these young guys are.” Daniel said he is really looking forward to what next season brings.

SNELL MAKES HISTORY WITH LAST GREAT SHOW

STORY BY CHASE CAMPBELL

ORLANDO, Fla. – On a rainy September afternoon in Lexington, Kentucky, the Kentucky Wildcats were hosting the New Mexico State Aggies, a team using a high-powered offense to keep up with more talented opponents. The Cats didn’t have a reputation for being a good football team on this Saturday in 2016, and third-string running back Benny Snell Jr. didn’t have a reputation for being a good football player. Snell had no touches the team’s first two games of the season and was able to run for the first time against the Aggies. He took the ball 136 yards and into the end zone four times that day. From then on, Snell was RB1. He and Boom Williams shared even snaps, but as time went on, the three-star recruit from Ohio took over the role of a workhorse and a dominator at the line of scrimmage. Before that rainy Saturday, not many expected to be watching the all-time leading rusher in Kentucky football history. Fast forward three full seasons, each one better than the last. Snell was the talk of the SEC and was known as the feared power running back with the spinner mouthpiece. He’d bowled over Florida linebackers to break “the streak,” sprinted all over Mississippi State to prove his naysayers wrong, and had rewritten the books in Kentucky lore. However, one of the goals he keeps track of stood in his way. The alltime school rushing record, held by Sonny Collins, has

10 | kentucky kernel

stood since 1975. Snell has said on multiple occasions that he always keeps his goals in front of him, crossing them off as they fall in front of him. During the final game of his junior season, and career at Ken-

inside the left tackle. Tight end C.J. Conrad set a lead block to allow Snell to shift right to avoid a would-be tackler. He was untouched and home free by the time he hit the Penn State sixyard line. He collapsed to

tucky, the record finally fell. In the VRBO Citrus Bowl against Penn State, Snell was only five yards away from the record after pushing for 102 yards already in the game. On first down from the Penn State 12-yard line, the Cats called up an inside run to try to get Snell the record. Even the crowd was chanting Snell’s name. They had been keeping track. “Yeah. Matter of fact, we had two plays called. We were going to run it to him two plays in a row. We had thought about some other things. We were, like, nah. Benny two in a row here, so it only took one,” UK head coach Mark Stoops said. Snell outran two edge rushers collapsing on the pocket and dove into the gap that was created just

his knees in the end zone. It was his. He had it. “Man, I (was) so excited. I (was) in the moment. I don’t even have words for, like, how I was feeling. I was speechless. I know that when we ran out there, you know, I knew I was like five or four yards away, and I looked at [offensive coordinator] Gran and he gave me that look, like yeah. I was like, ‘Oh, yeah, let’s get it,’” Snell said after the game. Conrad, who set the block that allowed Snell to get into the end zone, had to spoil the fun and “break it up, because I didn’t want to get a penalty, so I apologized to him on the sideline,” the recent UK graduate said. The Wildcats went on to win 27-24, earning their first bowl victory in almost exactly a decade (their last

postseason win was on Jan. 2, not 1, in 2009). Snell was named the bowl’s MVP for his 144-yard, two-touchdown performance. The game for the Cats was his last, and he knocked down four-year back Sonny Collins’ record in only three seasons with the Cats. If he played another year at his average rushing rate, rather than going into the NFL Draft, he’d hypothetically finish four years of college with 5,164 rushing yards and 64 touchdowns. That would tie him at 16th all-time in NCAA rushing yards, and seventh in all-time rushing touchdowns. He’ll finish with “only” 3,873 yards and 48 touchdowns over his Kentucky career, good for school records in both categories. Asked about Snell’s final touchdown, UK linebacker Kash Daniel said he just thought “Mama, there goes that man. I mean, everybody in this locker room that puts on this uniform has extreme confidence that whenever Benny Snell has the ball in his hands, he can make something happen. So, it may take a try or two, but he’s going to break one eventually, and he’s going to run you over and you’re not going to like it very much.” Snell, along with potent edge rusher Josh Allen and many other seniors, are walking away from Kentucky a champion. From a rainy September afternoon to a sunny January one, Snell has put the Cats on his shoulders and turned on the “jets” for Kentucky’s program development.
