COLD WEATHER READING By Allie King krnlfashion@kykernel.com
As the weather cools down and snow begins to fall, we are beginning to spend more and more time inside. In Kentucky, we are used to the dreary weather driving us indoors once a year, it always helps to have something new to entertain us when we are stuck on the couch. In the new age of technology, we can spend a day completely entranced by our devices. With a few clicks, we have years of television right in front of us. However, don’t underestimate the power of a good book. I am not one to read every night. In fact, I read very little compared to some. When I do read, I love a wide variety of stories: ranging from murder mystery to romance novels. This is why I feel I am able to compile the ultimate cold-weather reading list for all readers: beginner and advanced. Each of these books had me hooked until the last word and I would highly recommend them to anyone looking for a good read. HOLIDAY GIFTS Emi Deck & Molly Burns krnlfashion@kykernel.com
With the holiday season approaching, visits to family and friends’ homes for fun gatherings are approaching. The polite thing to do when visiting is to bring your hosts a little something special to say thank you for the invitation. Here are a few suggestions for seasonal and classic and inexphost giffts for the winter holidays: Scented Candles Scented candles are sure to be a favorite, especially around Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, and Christmas. Pumpkin and apple scents bring a fall feeling into a home, and spruce and cinnamon smell just like the winter holidays. Chocolates A box of chocolates is always popular and such a sweet gesture to your host. A Deli Tray A tray full of cheese, olives, and sausage with some nice crackers from a deli are a tasty treat for your host and their guests. Offer to bring this tray as an appetizer and your host will surely thank you. A Cookie Jar A cookie jar filled with cookies is a great gift to bring around Christmas time. Something homemade is always appreciated, so look up your favorite cookie recipes and get baking. Ornaments Ornaments are very popular around the holidays. Your host will remember you each time they hang the ornament on their tree, year after year. Shop Local If you are looking for a local or personalized gift, check out boutiques around you. In Lexington, look for great gift ideas at Shop Local Kentucky, Worlds Apart Home, Peggy’s Gifts and Accessories, or Chandler Reese Boutique. Flowers If you are looking for something fast but beautiful, an arrangement of fresh seasonal flowers is something that will be appreciated by any host. Personalized Coke Bottle This is a cute and affordable gift that someone can drink and enjoy or keep forever. Coca-Cola’s personalized Coke Bottles only cost $5 and they are easy to make. Go to their website and quickly create your bottle by adding a name and even a small message. You can even add a customized

bottle gift box for $2 if you want to make your gift receiver feel extra special. A loaf of homemade bread with a note Home Baked Goods Baked goods come from the heart, and anyone who receives a delicious loaf of bread will appreciate the thought behind it all. Yes, it will take some time, thoughts, and consideration, but that’s what makes this gift so valuable. You can make pumpkin bread, zucchini bread, fruit bread, yeast bread – the options are endless. Make it festive by wrapping it with colorful ribbons and attach a personalized note. You’ll be sure to put a smile on anyone’s face. One of your books If you have a friend or a family member who is a bookworm, consider gifting them one of your treasured reads, especially a book that has taught you so much and brought a lot of value to your life. Anyone who is an avid reader will appreciate this gift. It’s hard to let go of a good book, but it’s even better when you share it with someone else. Coffee Everyone loves coffee. Well, almost everyone. If you know anyone who is a coffeeholic then you can’t go wrong with this gift. Go to your local coffee shop and buy a standard sized bag of coffee beans or grounds. Pair it with a cute coffee mug if you want to go the extra mile. Most will retail in an average of $12 a bag. Succulent Plant These adorable and aesthetically pleasing plants are perfect for anyone who wants to add a little bit of life to their home. Succulents can be an indoor or an outdoor plant. They come in various different shapes and colors and are perfectly affordable. You can buy a small succulent for as little as $5 or a standard sized one for around $13 at your local garden store. If you’re artistic, consider personalizing their pots by painting them with a cool design.
WHAT TO EXPECT FROM
SPRING RUSH Tatum True
krnlfashion@kykernel.com
Rushing a sorority is costly, timeconsuming, and stressful. But rushing a sorority is also fun, exciting, life-changing, and is worth every penny! However, it is so much more than just a jumble of emotions. Experiencing rushing a sorority is something I will never forget. Three things that come to my mind when thinking back on my rush experience are running, sweat, and smiles. I can truly say that after my experience, I found so many new attributes about myself I never knew I possessed. Compare rushing to girl flirting for an entire week. All of us PNMs (Potential New Members) felt so welcomed and we were surrounded by good vibes for a week straight. Regardless of your opinion on sorority life, it is important to cut through what people have not rushed say about it, and hear about it from someone who actually has. I did end up getting a bid from my number one sorority since the beginning. I was elated when I opened my card on Bid Day. There is no better feeling than knowing all your hard work has paid off. That’s what it feels like to open your bid and run home to hundreds of new sisters. However, this is not the case for everyone. I understand the anxiety levels and commitment issues that come with the experience. If this is something that held you back from rushing in the fall, consider spring rush. Spring rush will be a great experience if you like a more lowkey setting and take pride in not running around like a chicken with their head cut off trying to find 300 of your new best friends in one week. If you thought sorority life wasn’t for you this fall, or if the thought of rushing with a thousand other random girls gave you anxiety, consider rushing one of the great sororities this university has to offer through spring rush. I truly believe that there is a home for everyone here on campus, and once you find that home there will be no better feeling than realizing these are your sisters for life. The special bond you will create and keep with these empowering women for the rest of your life makes “rushing” look like a piece of cake.

10 THINGS TO DO BEFORE STUDYING ABROAD Elle Smith krnlfashion@kykernel.com
I am currently a junior, broadcast journalism major studying abroad in Florence, Italy for the semester. I hope these tips help! 1. RESEARCH YOUR PROGRAM After freshman orientation at UK, I decided I wanted to study abroad in Italy the fall of my junior year. When it was time for me to start my application process, I never felt overwhelmed because I had done my research prior. When you know information about your program, it makes the application process smoother and less daunting. 2. START SAVING MONEY This may seem obvious, but seriously START SAVING. If you are a freshman and know you want to study abroad sometime during your collegiate career, start saving now. I personally love food, clothes, Starbucks, and Graeters, but I wish I had cut out some things because little did I know you have to pay for public bathrooms in Italy. 3. PACK EARLY AND DOUBLE CHECK EVERYTHING ELLE SMITH I STAFF Packing to go to another Elle Smith swimming while studying abroad in Florence, Italy. country is hard, and no matter how much you pack, you will you want to make sure the card would not be the best decision. feel as if you left everything you plan to use does not have any Therefore, I decided to get an Italian SIM card when I arrived, at home. Make a list prior to foreign transaction fees. which was very inexpensive. packing, or ask your program for 5. CALL YOUR CELL PHONE SERVICE 6. MAKE COPIES OF ALL a packing list! PROVIDER IMPORTANT DOCUMENTS 4. MAKE A CALL TO YOUR For those students who study I know for certain in Italy, BANK This is so important. Your abroad for shorter amounts you are required to carry a copy bank will decline your card of time, being dependent on of a VALID passport with you if they suspect that someone only WiFi may work, but for at all times. Also, depending has stolen your information in me, that was not possible. My on how long you are studying Europe, or wherever you plan on program requires that each abroad, you may have to apply studying. The first couple of days student has a working cell phone for a permit to stay. I am here after arriving you are stressed, plan at all times, just in case of for four months, so it was exhausted and the last thing you emergencies. I did my research required that I bring extra copies want to worry about is whether before I left, and realized that of my insurance documents, or not your card is working. Also, using Verizon, while abroad, visa, passport, and proof of
enrollment. I brought ten copies of each, and also I scanned copies on my phone. 7. KEEP UP WITH THE CURRENCY Change to the currency of your destination in the states! There will be a better currency rate. My program suggested that we arrive in Florence with 200 euros, and I made the mistake of waiting to exchange my money until I arrived in Florence...It was not my best decision. It is inevitable that you will have to withdraw money while studying abroad, so I suggest using an ATM connected to a bank. These tend to be safer and the currency exchange is always better. 8 .MAKE SURE YOUR CREDITS WILL TRANSFER Studying abroad is amazing because of the knowledge you gain, a new sense of cultural awareness, traveling and the food, but you have to remember you are here to study. UK required that all my classes be for credit so that I was able to use my scholarships to cover tuition abroad. 9. BE PREPARED FOR A LANGUAGE BARRIER I do not speak a lick of Italian. I understand “ciao” and that’s the extent of my knowledge. Thankfully in Florence, most people know how to speak English. But the first two nights after my arrival, neither my roommates or myself had any cell service as we were walking, and we got lost each time. Remember, you are in a foreign country, and we can’t expect people to know English. 10. SPEND TIME WITH YOUR FAMILY It is easy to get stressed out thinking about everything that needs to be done prior to departing but just breathe. Sitting in Italy right now, I am so thankful I just spent time with my parents before I left.

WALKING IN FLORENCE Elle Smith
krnlfashion@kykernel.com
“No phones, twenty minutes, just go walk,” said our Professor. You can imagine the sheer amount of panic that crossed every student’s face when she said “no phones”. I consider myself directionally challenged even with my phone, and in a foreign country, I make a left turn from my apartment and in my head, I have arrived in Rome and have no idea how to get back to Florence. Nevertheless, the whole class headed outside into the streets of Florence. Despite our doubt and panic about the task of walking around with no direction for twenty minutes, I believe all of us felt more energized the moment we stepped outside and the fresh air hit our faces. It was a lovely evening, with a slight breeze, not too warm nor too cold. I looked left then right down Corso Tintori, and decided to take a right. It looked unfamiliar. As I walked, I looked at the stores and people. When I first arrived in Florence, I would jump every time I heard the whiz of an Italian on a Vespa, now I just continue to walk while barely noticing one drove past. But for some reason, as I am walking today, every sound seems louder. The laughter, the waiters trying to convince people to come into their restaurants, the cars, the Vespas. I decide to make a right towards the Arno river. As I approach the water, I am reminded again of how amazing Florence is, in all of its grandeur. Even as I walk, I am exposed to new scents, new undiscovered areas, new sounds, and I realize that I am enjoying myself. As I cross the street to the river, I recognize a classmate. As we walk, we discuss our time in Florence thus far, and all of our adventures. Parents with children on bikes, people jogging, and lovers walking hand-in-hand, pass us as we walk. We stop and lean again the stone, and look, to my right, at the Ponte Vechhio. In my opinion, it is something that is better to admire from far. As the sun sets, the colors bounce off of the bridge in an enchanting way. From a distance you cannot tell, that the bridge is bustling with jewelers and goldsmiths, and tourists are clamoring their way to the center that is left open, to see Florence from that magical view. To my left you can see the large group of people at the Piazza de Michelangelo, watching the sunset over this beautiful city. That reminds me of how I need to make the trek up there at sunset sometime soon. My classmate and I look down at the water. Calm. It looks as if the water is not moving at all. The sunset has cast a beautiful hue on the water, causing it to sparkle at some parts. It is a beautiful evening, but it is started to get cool. We were not prepared with jackets, so we decided to make our way back to the classroom. As we walk, I look up and I see an Italian woman on her balcony enjoying a glass of wine and reading a book. I take a mental note to be like that woman one day, taking the time to enjoy the simple moments in my day as the beautiful sunset falls over this amazing city I get to call home.

HOLIDAY GAMES KRNL Staff krnlfashion@kykernel.com
While hot chocolate and twinkly lights definitely get you in the Christmas spirit, nothing says it’s the holiday season more than friends and family coming together to enjoy some festive (albeit competitive) fun. Holiday party games are just the thing to get even the grinchiest person to enjoy any upcoming family gatherings. Create your own games or take notes on the following suggestions to make the most of your time with your family and friends this holiday season:
You’ll need a pair of oven mitts and two dice. Gather your group into a circle and wait for hilarity to ensue. Give one person the ball to start and have them put on the oven mitts. The person to their right will roll the dice until they get doubles. While they are rolling, the person with the ball will try to unwrap
of it. Watch as your family and friends struggle to win the most prizes, and then have a go at it yourself. WHITE ELEPHANT GIFT EXCHANGE
Another game that you can play during the holiday season with your friends and family is the
place them in the middle of the room. Write out numbers for each of your guests and have everyone draw. For example, if there are 12 guests, have everyone draw a number between 1 and 12. Now, you are ready to play. Whoever drew the number “1” gets to go first. This person gets to pick a gift from the pile and
THE SARAN WRAP BALL
If you enjoy watching those you love do ridiculous things for entertainment, then this is the game for you this holiday season. Don’t worry because you can join in on the fun, too, and everyone can laugh at each other as you all frantically try to unwrap the saran wrap ball to get more prizes. Here’s how you play: First, you are going to need a roll of saran wrap, or more depending on the size of the ball you want to make. The more gifts you want to add to the ball, the more saran wrap you are going to need. Next, start packing in the prizes. You can include gifts like candy, packs of gum, chapsticks, cash, scratch off tickets, gift cards, small jewelry items, and if the players are over 21, those small $1 alcohol bottles. Really you can put anything in there that you want and think others will enjoy. Remember to put the most valuable items in the center of the ball. Tightly wrap all of the prizes into the saran wrap until you have a nice sized ball.

chooses to open a gift from the pile again. You continue taking turns in numerical order and everyone has the choice of stealing a gift or opening a new one. But here is the catch: every gift can only be stolen three times. Once a gift is stolen for the third time, it is off of the table and the current possessor gets to keep said gift. This is a great game for a group of friends or families. You can send out instructions with your invites so that your guests come prepared for the fun. It’s a perfect Christmas Eve game to give everyone a preview of Christmas morning where they will get even more gifts. Have fun with this gift exchange game this holiday season. It always makes for great fun and a little family rivalry. PIN THE NOSE ON RUDOLPH

as much as they can, keeping any prizes that fall out during their turn. As soon as the person with the dice rolls doubles, it is now their turn to have a go at unwrapping the ball. Pass the ball and the mitts to them, and give the dice to the next person in line. The oven mitts definitely make the game harder, but that’s the fun
White Elephant Gift Exchange. This game is also known as Dirty Santa or Yankee Swap. For this game, you have to prepare beforehand by having each of your guests bring a wrapped gift to the party. Most groups set a low price limit for these gifts, such as $5 or $10. When all of the wrapped gifts have arrived,
unwrap it. The person who drew the number “2” goes next. They can choose from the pile of gifts and unwrap another gift, or they can “steal” the gift that has already been opened. If this person chooses to steal, leaving the original gift possessor without a gift, they get to choose another gift or steal. This goes on until someone
Pin the Nose on Rudolph is a classic game that is fun to play for all ages. Take a trip down memory lane with your friends and family this holiday season by being a kid again with this festive party game. All you need to play is a poster of a reindeer up on a wall, some sort of red ball (like a clown nose) with adhesive or a pin so that it can stick to the poster, and a blindfold. Whoever wants to go first gets the nose, has the blindfold put on them, and then is spun around. Their goal is to try to get the nose as close to the correct spot on the reindeer as possible. Take turns and whoever gets the nose the closest wins and can get a prize. While this game is very simple, it is extremely entertaining to play at any holiday party with kids, friends, family, or even coworkers.
