Kent State University Class of 1970, Happy 50th anniversary and congratulations on this significant milestone! We hope this memory book will help you fondly reminisce about your time at Kent State, what you have accomplished over the past 50 years and the meaningful friendships you formed since setting foot on campus. This memory book also serves as a great way to catch up with your fellow Golden Flashes and learn about their favorite Kent State memories. We would like to extend a special thank you to Lee Kamps, Nick Phillips and Tom Stephan who were this year’s committee volunteers and instrumental to the success of the Class of 1970 reunion. In 1970... The cost of attending Kent State in 1970, including tuition, fees, room and board, was approximately $1,362. Musical artists such as The Association, Ray Charles, Donovan, Jose Feliciano, Ritchie Havens, David Ruffin and Sly and the Family Stone played on campus. Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young recorded “Ohio” in response to the May 4 shootings. Kent State program enrollment reached 21,000. Pollution was the focus of “Think Week, ’70”, where speakers provoked thought on the effects of air and water pollution. The 12-story University Library opened, becoming the tallest building in Portage County.

U.S. Army Nurse Corps Your favorite memory of your time at Kent State: I lived in Terrace Hall freshman and sophomore year. Poot's Store was right across the street from our dorm and my friends and I enjoyed the food they prepared. We visited every Sunday evening after the cafeteria closed... I remember 25 flavors of milkshakes!!! The best thing that has happened to you in the last 50 years: My 24-year career in the Army Nurse Corps was both enriching and exciting. It afforded me the opportunity to savor the intricacies of foreign cultures, food and travel, as well as allowed me to earn my master’s degree in Advanced Nursing Practice and Hospital Administration on scholarship. The Ohio Company/Fifth Third Securities Vice President of Public Finance Your favorite memory of your time at Kent State: I think the time we all spent together talking and laughing while we were completely free of responsibility and obligation. It was a magical time in our lives. I was a teacher and counselor for 13 years and then spent 28+ years as a Labor Relations Consultant with the Ohio Education Association. My older daughter was a 1995 KSU grad and is now an attorney and my younger daughter is a 2000 WVU graduate and a teacher. I also married my amazing wife, Margie, in 2012 at the age of 63. I also got chased into Stopher Hall by the National Guard on Saturday, May 2, 1970. Your favorite memory of your time at Kent State: I don’t have one particular memory, but many: being terribly shy and scared when I first arrived as a freshman and almost flunking out my first semester; seeing the art studios for the first time was so exciting and I immediately felt I belonged there; I have a vivid memory of laying out a huge paper roll, and sending it down the dorm hallway about 15 feet to work on one of my first art assignments, draw a flower pot 100 different ways – I was in heaven and with each drawing, my ideas kept getting better and better. Not a positive memory, but an influential one: I was on campus, May 4, 1970, during the shootings and looked at the dead to see if one was my husband, none were. This experience was significant because it created the pursuit of social justice as artist, teacher and human throughout my life. The best thing that has happened to you in the last 50 years: My life is grounded by my love of making, exhibiting and seeing art, having had a stimulating teaching career; love of travel; and a life with my wonderful artist-husband, John Landis, for 27 years.
