FLASHES ON THE GLOBAL STAGE Five Kent State graduates competed at the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics over the 2021 summer, breaking the school’s previous record of four Olympians at the Munich Games in 1972. The quintet represented four different countries, with Reggie Jagers III being the first Golden Flash to don the Team USA uniform since Kim Kreiner in 2008.

THE DEVINE DIAMOND The soon-to-be-renovated Kent State Softball complex has undergone a name change, as the Diamond at Dix will now be known as the Devine Diamond, thanks to a generous gift from Judy Devine.

THE SCOLIN MacLEAN LOUNGE (pictured below) The newly named Scolin MacLean Lounge hosts pregame festivities for select TGFC members before each home basketball and volleyball games as well as on selected dates throughout the year. Members enjoy snacks, coffee and a cash bar as well as pregame “chalk talk” sessions with Kent State coaches.

THE DR. JAMES KARGE OLSEN LOBBY The lobby at the George Jenkins Athletic Academic Resource Center has been named through a new gift from George Jenkins, for Dr. James Karge Olsen, former head of the Kent State Honors program and Jenkins’ mentor.

LAING AND SAUNDRA KENNEDY BLUE & GOLD TROPHY ROOM (pictured above) Across the MAC Center lobby is the newly named Laing and Saundra Kennedy Blue & Gold Trophy Room. The room showcases numerous Golden Flashes’ trophies and serves as a meeting space for the Golden Flashes’ athletic administrative staff and as a lobby outside the office of Director of Athletics Randale L. Richmond.

THE DAVE AND SHERRY JOY LOBBY The lobby at the Kent State Field House has been named by Dave and Sherry Joy. The lobby serves as a check-in area for events held in the Field House and houses vending machines for the Golden Flashes’ student-athletes as well as men’s and women’s locker rooms.

THE GARY AND MINDY ALEMAN FIELD HOUSE OFFICES The Dave and Sherry Joy lobby at the Field House leads directly into the Gary and Mindy Aleman Field House offices. The office serves as mission control for the Field House. The newly named Aleman offices handle all the scheduling and logistics for the Field House. The Aleman offices balance equal practice time for Golden Flash student-athletes while also accommodating university and local events.

No, the goal of The Golden Flashes Club is to directly support student-athlete scholarships and help close the gap on our annual $7.2 million scholarship bill. Tickets and fees for events such as the scholarship auction and golf outings help cover these event costs, so they are not qualified as gifts. If my gift is to a specific sport, does that count as a gift to The Golden Flashes Club?

Yes! As long as the gift goes towards that sport’s scholarship, you will be eligible to receive benefits from The Golden Flashes Club.

Are my gifts to The Golden Flashes Club tax deductible? If my gift is to an athletics endowment, does that count as a gift to The Golden Flashes Club?

Yes! As long as the gift goes toward an athletic endowment. Certain rules apply when giving to men’s basketball funds. Please contact your philanthropic advisor if you have questions.

All gifts not associated with ticket sales or other benefits are 100 percent deductible. The Golden Flashes Club and the Kent State University Foundation recommend consulting with your tax advisor regarding any donations made to Kent State Athletics. PLANNED CAPITAL PROJECTS These important projects are made possible through university funding and generous gifts from our supporters.

DEVINE DIAMOND

The softball facility will undergo a complete renovation. A synthetic turf outfield will replace the current natural grass, while the infield will get an overhaul that includes an upgraded drainage system. In addition to the turf installation, the renovation will include several other enhancements: • A synthetic, brown warning track will lead up to a new wrap around fence. • The warning track will wrap the field and extend to the dugouts and backstop. • A new padded backstop will be installed. • Both home and visitor dugouts will be completely updated and renovated. • The turf inside the batting cages and for both bullpens will be upgraded. • Netting for the backstop and batting cages will be updated.

GYMNASTICS

The gymnastics practice facility will install a new below-ground foam pit. Pits provide a soft, forgiving landing surface for gymnasts and aid in the development of skills while helping reduce injury. The renovation also includes the installation of a proper runway area for the gymnasts to safely practice. The update will eliminate the surface transition that is currently installed. The replacement will be a singular unit identical to what is used during competition.

FOOTBALL WEIGHT ROOM PROJECT

Kent State Football as well as other athletic programs in the Field House, will enjoy an elite state-of-the-art weight room and one of the best facilities in the Mid-American Conference. The new space will have custom Sorinex power racks and weights, and it will also include Perch velocity sensor systems.
