Message from the Chair of the Board What a time of celebration for Kent Place! Whether you’re an alumna, a parent, a member of the faculty or staff, a grandparent, or a friend, this — our 125th year — is a special milestone for us all. I’m proud of the students, faculty, staff, Leadership Team, and Board of Trustees, and am particularly grateful to lead the school at this important moment in its history. I think often of those six founding families who believed their daughters were worthy of an education equal to that of their sons and made the leap toward something better. That leap took courage and sacrifice. Now, 125 years later, their legacy still propels hundreds of girls and young women toward a bright future, one in which anything is possible. You recognize the impact Kent Place School has on generations of women and carry on the work of those founding families by investing in our students through your philanthropy. Thank you for your gifts during 2018–2019: It was a banner year! We raised an incredible $1.4 million for the Kent Place Fund — a 22 percent increase over last year and an all-time high for our community. Your contributions provide the resources to support the development of our students into brave and brilliant women. This report celebrates your generosity. As you read the following pages, I know you’ll share my sense of pride in Kent Place — today, tomorrow, and into the future. Thank you for all you do for our amazing students. My best wishes to you in 2020.

Message from the Head of School Three cheers to Kent Place School and to you, our incredible donors! The 125th anniversary of the founding of Kent Place is a tremendous milestone in the life of our community, and we’ve designed a year of special get-togethers and festivities to mark the extraordinary occasion. One hundred twenty-five years ago, our visionary founders were determined to create a school just for girls — theirs and others. This was no small undertaking . . . They were our first philanthropists. Philanthropy, from the Greek meaning “loving people,” implies promoting the well-being of others. As a result of the vision, sacrifice, and courage of our founding families, classes began in a house on Deforest Avenue. An article in the Summit Herald 100 years ago, celebrating the twenty-fifth anniversary of Kent Place, tells us that a mission formulated around a dining room table had blossomed into a school with attendees from every state in the Union (48 at the time) and had taught more than 1,000 students. At the 25th celebration, the presidents of Princeton and Wellesley came to speak and congratulate what they called one of the “finest college preparatory schools in the nation.” Quite an accomplishment for only 25 years! My affection and respect for those who led the charge for our brave and brilliant girls only grows. Now your philanthropy is equally treasured. Donors are our backbone, and your sacrifices for the welfare of others are greatly appreciated. This year, the 115th Alumnae Association Board has at its helm a third-generation alumna — Rebecca (Magrane) Redpath, Class of 2002. Becky’s mother, Lynn (Daeschler) Magrane ’70, is a cochair of the 125th Celebrations, along with Hallee (Branin) Dangler ’96, Betsy (Busch) Crosby ’66, and Ruby Henry ’99. Hallee is the mother of three Kent Place students. Lynn’s mother, Joan, came to KPS in the 1930s and one of Hallee’s daughters will graduate in 2030 — their two families span a century of the KPS experience. As we proudly usher in the future of our school, on behalf of the girls today and those to come in the next 125 years, I offer my deepest thanks to our incredible donors. Yours for Kent Place,

Jennifer C. Galambos Head of School

Kent Place School 11

Celebrating Achievement Commencement at Kent Place School is full of tradition as seniors walk one by one through the Daisy Chain and are seated together for the final time as classmates. It’s a momentous accomplishment for our brave and brilliant graduates and a fitting ceremony to show how tremendously proud we are of all the hard work and joy each class brings to KPS. On Sunday, June 2, Kent Place graduated 78 bright and powerful members of the Class of 2019. We asked students, graduates, parents, and faculty to tell us about some of the moments they especially enjoyed during the ceremony.

“You were destined for greatness no matter what: You and your parents have thankfully allowed us all

“Two graduates, Kaira Brown and Jayla Creekmur, were elected to speak as representatives of the senior class, and they were hilarious and moving. It was apparent that the members of this class greatly admired one another. Many of their words addressed their feelings of community and support, and as they gently teased their classmates, the class laughed along.”

to be a part of the journey, while also helping you to further uncover the potential that was already evident.”

—SIAN TORRES P ’19 ’22

“As I stood at the bottom of the Daisy Chain watching the soon-to-be graduates process down the Graduation Lawn, I started to think that this will be the Class of 2020 next year. I stood there, beyond proud of everything they did this year, for their little sisters, the juniors, and the rest of the school.”

“I was so excited when my classmates and I threw our bouquets of peonies into the air to celebrate that we’d finally graduated! Then we sang our Alma Mater with pride and joy — the last time as students and the first time as alumnae. We’ve found our voice and it’s now our time to create a new space, make a difference, and change the world.”

—ANNA GOMEZ ’19

“This is my absolute favorite part of graduation, right before they walk down that pathway toward their family and friends. Mrs. Murphy has a word of encouragement for each girl before she leaves the porch. They’re quiet, focused on not tripping over their dresses and willing themselves not to cry. They stand alone, but there’s always a sister in front to show the way and one right behind.”

—ELIZABETH FARSHTEY, Upper School faculty

“I’m standing before my class, teachers, and family, about to receive my diploma from my dad, who is a KPS Trustee. I look right and see Kent Place, where I developed into the person I am. I look at my teachers, bringing back every question answered, curiosity sparked, and support given. Being presented in front of all who have poured themselves into me makes my heart fuller than it’s ever been.”

“The Daisy Chain is carried in by the juniors. We fully understand why we waited in the rain until it passed and were able to wipe off the chairs. The girls wanted to walk down the Graduation Lawn. Traditions, knowing you can experience what so many before you have and so many after will, are part of the incredible spirit and beauty of Kent Place School.”

—KELLY DAAB P ’19 ’23 ’23 “As I listened to Liz Woodall’s final graduation speech of her Kent Place career, I’ve taken to following her lead. I see her strength, and I try to be strong; I hear her words of wisdom, and I listen closely. Today, among other things, I heard her speak of love. Her advice to our graduates: Lead with love, love deeply, freely, and bravely. Liz presented this as advice, but also recognized that the Class of 2019 already practices this beautifully.”

—DR. LYDIA BAROVERO, Upper School faculty

“We realized that we’ve already been doing an amazing job. Even though we’re about five minutes away from becoming alumnae, we don’t have to stop being brave and brilliant girls. We’ve spent the last four years finding our voice,

Student Highlight Meet Keerthi Jayaraman ’19: Winner of the Citizenship Cup The Upper School community was happy to award its highest honor — the Citizenship Cup — to Keerthi Jayaraman. This prize is voted on by the entire faculty and student body and is presented to a senior who has shown outstanding citizenship, loyalty, pride in the school, courage in the face of unpopular decisions, and friendliness and helpfulness to her peers and faculty. Keerthi is known to all as someone who channeled her passion for service and social justice in many areas of her life — namely, as Community Service president, GLAM’D copresident, and Diversity Council board member. While at KPS, she was also an active participant in the Girls’ Leadership Institute as both a participant and a counselor. Along with her sister, she also cofounded a nonprofit organization, EdGift, which is dedicated to empowering young women through education. Keerthi was a valued and treasured member of the Kent Place community over the course of her four years here. Her drive, passion, and service uplifted so many people. We’re sure that her heart of service will benefit the many communities of Philadelphia now that she’s in her freshman year at the University of Pennsylvania.

Celebrating Connection

Reunion 2019

“It feels like yesterday.” “One weekend together is not enough.” “When can we gather next?” I’m so thankful for these friendships.” These are just a few of the sentiments overheard when 150 alumnae converged on campus for Reunion Weekend on May 3–4. Reunion celebrates the connection between classmates and between alumnae and their alma mater. There was a buzz of activity as those in attendance enjoyed spending time with friends, reminiscing about their days at KPS, and seeing the wonderful changes that have occurred on campus.

several Boston-area channels, and the national nonfiction WORLD channel. Liz’s career in television programming and communication is highlighted by a Peabody Award, an Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University Award, and numerous New England Emmy Awards and national Emmy Award nominations. She has been honored with a Pinnacle Award from the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce and the National Race Amity Medal of Honor. Liz serves as Vice Chair of the Board of Directors for The Partnership, a national nonprofit coaching program and network for executives of color. She also works to strengthen the moral awareness in her community by serving as the President of the Board of Trustees for the Massachusetts Coalition for the Homeless.

Elizabeth Chrystal ’09 received the Young Alumna Award for the excellence she has achieved in both her academic and professional pursuits. Elizabeth earned high honors and academic distinction at both Yale University and Le Cordon Bleu. After working as a consultant with Bain, Elizabeth joined Momofoku and served as Vice President of Strategy until her recent appointment as Chief Financial Officer. She is an innovative thinker who has combined her passions for science and culinary arts with a strong entrepreneurial spirit. Dora Gragg was the recipient of the Kent Place Community Award for her contributions to the school over the past 21 years as a

faculty member. Dora believes strongly in an all-girls education and the impact it makes on a student’s self-confidence and leadership skills. She has played a key role in expanding the language program to start as early as Jr. Pre-K and implementing World Language Curriculum. In 2006, she helped develop Kaleidoscopes, a diversity, equity, and justice group open to Primary School students of color as well as to any student who wants to learn more about multiculturalism. Its mission is to celebrate diversity and the appreciation and understanding of students’ racial, ethnic, socioeconomic, and gender identities and to equip students with the tools to challenge bias and prejudice in their lives.

In Recognition of Friendship and Leadership Gathering for lunch and celebrating our alumnae in Atwood Hall was fitting: The room that used to be the Upper School art room, and before that, the Study Hall, holds many special memories for Kent Place graduates. But what makes the location even more significant is that in 2008, Margot (Saur) Meyer ’56 made a gift to restore the room to its original condition, to be used as a Middle School commons area and named Atwood Hall. Margot stated that she dedicated “our old study hall and assembly room to my longtime friend and charismatic president of the student government, Ginger (Atwood) Ackerley ’56, in the name of friendship and leadership.” Ginger, in turn, dedicated the Mabie House Choral Room in Margot’s name, also “in recognition of friendship and leadership.” What better place for alumnae to gather than in a space that signifies the lasting bond between classmates and friends; pays tribute to leadership, a hallmark of a KPS education; and was made possible because of the generosity of our alumnae.

QUESTION: As Kent Place celebrates its

125 anniversary this year and honors all the advancements it’s made since 1984, what about KPS do you hope remains the same for the next 125 years? “Over the course of 13 years, I have consistently witnessed young women supporting and pushing each other to be their strongest, best selves. In a supportive educational environment, a student is free to try, fail, and adapt. Young women cheer for others’ successes and know that there is a place for each of them to shine. Wherever the evolution of curriculum, programming, or otherwise takes KPS, the support and bonds created in this learning community are something I hope will never change.” —LINDA A. ESTEY P ’21

Celebrating Vision

$2.5 MILLION

What impact is possible? To effect change, first there must be a vision. In 2013, Jennifer and Alan Fournier P ’14 ’14 had a vision — they believed the community could do more to enhance the school’s financial-aid packages. To provide a KPS education for students with great potential but no access to a strong public school, they made a $500,000 gift, and then they laid down a challenge: If the Kent Place community raised $500,000 for financial aid, the Fourniers would match it, and create a $1.5 million scholarship fund. The community responded quickly and generously, so much so that the Fourniers upped the ante: If Kent Place raised $100,000 annually for five years, they’d match that as well, providing a combined $2.5 million scholarship fund. Kent Place sprang into action and more than 500 donors responded to the call — in fact, they met the goal a year early. These resources now cover tuition and fees each year for two Upper School students. And these young women are thriving in this stimulating environment.

Report of Gifts

“A Kent Place education is one we all revere,” says Coral Butler Brooks P ’25, Director of Advancement. “We work daily in service to our students. These gifts to young learners are life changing. Our gratitude for generosity of this magnitude is indeed heart-felt.” Two young women have already graduated from Kent Place as a result of this philanthropy, and both attend Princeton University. “Thank you to every donor who has made these amazing scholarships possible,” says Anne Grissinger P ’25, Advancement Committee Chair. “I have a profound respect for the bold vision of our challenge donors and their faith in our current and past parents, grandparents, alumnae, faculty, staff, trustees, and friends to rise to the occasion. Gifts like this not only benefit our students, but also elevate us as human beings and as a community.”

Celebrating Philanthropy

Leadership, Legacy, and Philanthropy Leadership donors to the Kent Place Fund were celebrated at Canoe Brook Country Club on September 26, 2019, in recognition of their generosity to Kent Place and its students. Guest speakers were Katherine (O’Donnell) Lynch ’06 and Beverly B. Mills P ’09 ’12. FOLLOWING ARE THEIR REMARKS.

Katherine (O’Donnell) Lynch ’06 There are so many things I could talk about when it comes to how Kent Place has impacted me and why I’m so proud to be an alumna, especially during this 125th-year celebration. Lately, I’ve been thinking a lot about support and what it means for me, my team, and my family. We are all here tonight because we support Kent Place. We support Kent Place because we believe in the mission — to offer students of diverse backgrounds an academically rigorous curriculum in a caring atmosphere; to encourage them to contribute to and find success in this challenging program; to inspire young women to leadership; and to strengthen moral awareness. We believe Kent Place fosters a supportive environment for our girls to thrive. Support can manifest in many ways — emotional, financial, academic. It can be helpful, but it can also be detrimental if not balanced with independence and standards. I’m sure we can all remember people in our lives who have been one and not the other — people who are sticklers for high standards but don’t help you achieve them, or people who just enable.

26 Kent Place School

One of the many reasons the women of Kent Place are successful is that they are supported, but they are also held to high standards. Kent Place is a community of high standards and high support. I wasn’t introduced to this concept of “high standards, high support” until recently, by my current boss. But as I’ve reflected on my time at Kent Place and the last 14 years since I graduated, I realized I’ve been a recipient of and used this model throughout my life and career. As a kid, my parents held high standards for me, expecting me to try my hardest, to get good grades and held me accountable for doing so. My parents provided high support when they hugged me when I failed a test, lost a squash match, or had a fight with a friend. My English teachers at Kent Place, like Ms. Rosenberg and Ms. Carroll, held high standards for the five-paragraph essay and a powerful thesis statement. These same teachers supported me when I got one of these five-paragraph essays back with so much red pen I could barely read my own words, and needed extra help after school to figure out how to improve.

Guest speakers Katherine (O’Donnell) Lynch ’06 and Beverly Mills P ’09 ’12 with Head of School Jennifer Galambos (center)

As the captain of the squash team, I embraced the Kent Place high standards mind-set when I led the team in extra sprints after every practice, even when it was the last thing we all wanted to do. I became a high-support leader when we comforted each other after losing the national championship twice in a row, and then mustered the resilience to get back up, try again, and win the following year. As an officer in the Navy, I maintained high standards when I expected my division to show up on time, pass inspections, and work as a team on deployment. I was a high-support leader when I helped one of my sailors get a plane ticket to go see his dying father before he passed away. At Oscar, where I currently work, I’m a high-standards leader when I hold my team accountable to meeting their quarterly metrics and give them tough feedback on how they can improve. I’m a high-support

leader when we work through tough problems together in an effort to improve accessibility and affordability of healthcare. You can have high standards and still be a supportive, compassionate leader. You can be both — and this is powerful. We need high-standards, high-support communities to learn how to fail and to get back up and try again — that is life. As I mentioned earlier, the person who taught me this phrase is the person I work for now — she’s the only leader I’ve ever worked for that I could actually see myself possibly being one day. She is energetic, enthusiastic, whip-smart, and a new mom, like me. She is also the only woman I’ve ever worked for. We need to change this. I believe Kent Place is doing just that, and you’re all a part of making that happen.

Beverly B. Mills P ’09 ’12 Tonight we celebrate the generous support of those who have gone before us — the generations of alumnae, parents, grandparents, faculty, and friends whose philanthropy over the past 125 years has made a significant difference to Kent Place and to the girls and young women who attend this remarkable school. As most of you know, I didn’t attend Kent Place. But I think it’s important for you to understand my KPS connection. My daughter Kristen ’09 started in fourth grade and Danielle ’12 was a lifer who came in first grade. I was fortunate to be involved in my daughters’ educational journey, not only by serving on the Board of Trustees

For Danielle, there is one moment that stands out in my mind to this day. In eighth grade, Danielle was a typical 13-year-old with a mouth full of braces and rubber bands. She was also the Middle School Green Key President, and was making a speech in front of a room full of prospective students and parents for an Open House. In the middle of her speech, one of her elastics on her braces broke and went flying across the room. Without missing a beat, Danielle said, “Oh! That was my rubber band!” and then just kept going with her speech — not fazed for a moment. She just kept going! The confidence that is instilled in our girls is remarkable. It simply doesn’t occur to them not to keep going, no

All it took was one tour at Kent Place, and we were sold! The difference at Kent Place was immediately evident. The girls were at the same time bubbly and outspoken, warm and confident. But it went beyond anything that might seem superficial. The professionalism

Because today’s students will be tomorrow’s alumnae. Kent Place has among the highest participation rates for alumnae in the country. That’s something to celebrate — our strong culture of philanthropy. Practically speaking, this culture at Kent Place is a reflection of the collective commitment to the growth and development of this school.

It means that over the course of its 125 years, Kent Place has valued philanthropy and has made it core to its mission. It’s not a fad or a talking point. Philanthropy is our mission. Everyone is involved. It’s necessary for our school’s growth. It’s who we are. It means everyone in this room tonight has played an important

role in building and sustaining Kent Place School. My husband, Steve, was invited to speak at this event in 2004. Something he said that evening has always stood out to me and I just have to share it again: It’s funny that I’m talking to this group and reflecting that my experience at a private high school was among the most pivotal in my life. Because, you see, I got to attend Friends Academy because of a stranger — because of someone like you. Someone I never knew, and who never knew me. But someone who made a financial commitment to make sure that the school was in a position to give young people a chance to dream and grow . . . These words still touch me and remind me how blessed Steve and I are to help give the girls at Kent Place a chance to dream and grow . . . just like each one of you in this room. The beauty of KPS is that we all have a common bond, we all have similar experiences, we all have a love for this place. My hope is that, just like Danielle, we all have our “Rubber Band Moment,” or a chance for a “1 on 1 experience” like Kristen. I am sure you each have your own examples — all of which have made

The Oak Leaf Society The Oak Leaf Society recognizes donor loyalty to Kent Place School. Oak Leaf members make up a special community of donors with deep roots and strong commitment. Your investments are making a sustained difference at Kent Place — from informed and creative teaching, student financial aid, and flagship programs such as the Ethics Institute and the Girls’ Leadership Institute, to arts, athletics, and so many other elements that make the KPS experience extraordinary. Oak Leaf Society members are donors who have made a gift for three or more consecutive fiscal years. The longer you give, the more enduring your support. Kent Place School is proud to acknowledge Oak Leaf participants at the following levels:

Limitless Possibilities Capital Gifts Kent Place School completed the “Limitless Possibilities” campaign in June 2018. Thanks to the generosity of more than 650 donors, we raised $15 million to build the incredible Center for Innovation, our building dedicated to the study of science, technology, engineering, visual arts, and mathematics. From Kindergarteners practicing drawing in the Innovation Lab to Upper School students learning to code, the CFI truly benefits every student on campus. Below are the donors who supported Limitless Possibilities in the 2019 fiscal year. Adunni S. Anderson

The Arthur J. Conley Faculty Travel Grant Award The Arthur J. Conley P ’76 ’78 ’79 Travel Grant Award was created in 2019 in loving memory by the children and grandchildren of mathematics teacher Art Conley, who died in 2018. The gift was organized by daughters Eileen (Conley) Schlee ’78 and Patricia (Conley) Dunn ’76 and wife Louise (McCarthy) Conley ’53 P ’78. The family wanted a meaningful tribute. “Dad’s great loves were family, teaching, and travel,” says daughter Pat. “It’s our hope that this brings together all three in a way that would make him happy. We’re pleased that Kent Place faculty will be able to spend quality family time to rest and recharge, and will know how appreciated they are for the contributions they make for the good of the students.” The members of the Conley family endowed the award with more than $350,000. The Arthur J. Conley Travel Grant Fund will provide two grants of up to $7,000 each year for faculty who have served Kent Place for at least ten years. The award is designed so that a teacher and family may take a trip wherever they’d like. The first recipient will receive a grant for the summer of 2020.
