Horse Tales: A summer literacy program for grades 1 – 8 at Milestones Equestrian Achievement Program
Milestones Equestrian Achievement Program 12372 Riggs Road • Independence, KY 41051 859.694.7669 • scheduling@milestonesinc.org • www.milestonesinc.org
In collaboration with the Kenton County Public Library children in grades 1-8 who are able to read at any level are invited to read to therapy horses at Milestones Equestrian Achievement Program during the upcoming summer months. “Horse Tales” will offer children the opportunity to improve their reading skills while also assisting our horses through socialization and human interaction. Animals find the rhythmic sound of a voice very comforting and soothing. Many children struggle with reading aloud at school and often feel reluctant to practice at home with a parent. An animal is a completely non-judgmental listener. Many students have shown remarkable improvement in their reading skills and feel more confident and relaxed while reading after participating in similar programs. In order to participate, children must register in advance (registration will be taken up to 5 pm the day before Horse Tales is scheduled) by going to our website (www.milestonesinc. org) and clicking on the Horse Tales link. Participating readers will receive a free bookmark from Milestones and a book from the Friends of the Kenton County Public Library. Readers may also bring a book with them from home or stop by their local library. Horse Tales is scheduled for 11 am; 11:30 am; 1 pm; 1:30 pm; 2 pm on the following Tuesdays in the summer: • June 8, 15, 22 & 29 • July 6, 13, 20 & 27 Reading times will take place in 30-minute intervals and a maximum of 5 readers can participate in each group. Masks and social distancing will be required. At the end of one day up to 30 readers will have had the chance to read tales to our horses! A Milestones staff person and a minimum of two volunteers will be present for assistance and support.
