Community Resilience
Connected by purpose. Driven by courage. Annual Report 2020 - 2021
Grit & Determinism
A message from the CEO & Board Chair Grit. We couldn’t think of a better word to define the Kensington community. Grit signifies strength of character and indomitable spirit. But for Kensington Health, it means so much more. Staff showing up to work and providing excellent care throughout the pandemic. Dealing with related worry and sorrow. Supporters going out of their way to spend precious time raising funds for health care that matters. And teams moving beyond everyday care to problem solve, plan and pivot. All to ensure continued access to the essential health care that our community relies upon every day. This past year shaped us. It redefined who we are and what matters. It changed philanthropic giving forever. It allowed us to be creative, get inspired and find new ways to engage with our community. The not-for-profit sector took some harsh blows this year. Like other charities, we faced serious challenges. But we also formed deeper connections with those around us by stopping what wasn’t working, adjusting to restrictions, and creatively adopting new fundraising strategies to make a difference in the lives of those we serve. The result? The Foundation proudly allocated $3M in support of Kensington Health’s urgent, capital, and operational needs! If we’ve learned anything this year, it’s that community is everything. It depends on us to keep care accessible, and we rely on it for support. The grit and passion our community and staff have shown in the face of uncertainty is a cornerstone of Kensington’s values, bonding us with those who need us most to constantly bring new meaning to community care.

Community Strength The greatness of a community is most accurately measured by the compassionate actions of its members. - Coretta Scott King
At Kensington Health, our purpose is to tirelessly pursue the best ways to take better care of the communities we serve. In fact, Kensington is playing a leadership role in developing an equitable, patient-centred provincial system by: Providing ongoing access to urgent eye, infusion, diagnostic and ophthalmological clinics, allowing hospitals to remain focused on COVID-19 Ensure long-term care residents receive the highest quality care, while at the same time safeguarding Kensington Health staff to have the pandemic-related support and supplies necessary to keep residents, patients, and families safe Solving Ontario-wide surgical backlogs by expanding our capacity for increased colonoscopy and cataract procedures Building the largest residential hospice in the GTA so that those in need of end-of-life care are not turned away from hospitals and stay in the community Supporting our community means tapping into its strength in the same way it depends on ours. While government provides funding, it’s not nearly enough to cover the cost of quality care. Philanthropy funds as much as 40% of unmet capital and operational costs in some areas, ensuring that Kensington’s commitment to care continues across our campus. In fact, the Foundation has always stood steadfast in our support, having paid out $52M in donations and grants to Kensington and the community since 1998! The collective impact of our donors and supporters is at the very heart of what’s allowed Kensington to thrive and grow in moments of uncertainty. Our work has always stemmed from community need, and the community has always played a role in driving our purpose and building out our model of care.
Revealing the Heroes Within As the pandemic wore on, we saw some tough times. Lockdowns, restrictions and worries about paying the bills started to take their toll. Anxiety was high. Giving was down. To inspire philanthropy, we needed to think differently about what it means to gather. In June we hosted Kensington Health Heroes, a live-broadcast virtual event, and invited our corporate partners to join in celebrating frontline staff and community whose resiliency bolstered us throughout the pandemic. Thanks to many of you, our sponsors and community supporters, we raised $225,000. Our corporate community responded with generous sponsorship commitments, including Medical Pharmacies, PointClickCare, Scotiabank, Sodexo, TLN/TLN Media Group and many, many more. The evening’s talented host, Carolyn Taylor, and an anonymous matching-gift donor inspired donations of $12,000 during the live-broadcast event. Together, we celebrated the many unsung heroes who've kept Kensington Health thriving, and at the same time, raised critical funds to ensure we can continue to do so going forward.
Acts of Compassion
In every season and at every opportunity our volunteers, families, friends and corporate supporters showed us the love.
Seasonal Giving
Thanks to the matching-gift challenges put forward by the Simone, Kuszelewski and other families, our Holiday and (first-ever) Spring campaigns raised a record $188K. Funds supported Kensington’s most urgent needs and continued access to care throughout the pandemic.
Do-It-Yourself (DIY) Events
Advancement Committee members inspired two DIY events: a fabulous collaboration with Dior Canada and spectacular seafood supper with Hooked Danforth. Jackie Brown and the Harbord Village Residents’ Association raised donations for a blanket warming cabinet. In addition to raising over $23K, these volunteerled events expanded our network and the impact we make on community care.
2021 Kensington Hike
Virtual for a second year in a row, participants hiked, ran, cycled, made cupcakes and took on other challenges in support of Kensington Hospice. The 11th annual Hike raised $105K, thanks to our community of advocates and sponsors Medical Pharmacies, Mount Pleasant Group, Fidelity Investments and Evanov Communications, who supported the event and raised awareness for community end-of-life care.
You donated and inspired others with matching gifts. Local restaurants brought heartwarming soup for the frontlines. You sent in nutritious food and snacks. Your children and those from local schools sang holiday carols to bring smiles to Kensington Gardens residents and staff. In the spirit of community, you volunteered and stepped in, actively shared your personal stories and encouraged others to participate and donate to our fundraising events.
Community Impact Our community is everything.
Together, we are reimagining what healthcare can and should look like. Our donors and supporters make our plans to improve community care a reality.

Hospice helps health care Kensington Hospice fills an important gap in Ontario’s health care system. Hospice care leaves room in hospitals for urgent patient needs and is more cost effective for our already over-burdened system. The cost of caring for terminally ill patients in an acutecare hospital bed is $1,100/day. But the cost of care at Kensington Hospice is only $460/day. That’s less than half! By offering in-community palliative care, Kensington keeps hospital beds free for acute-care needs, especially now as the demands tied to COVID-19 continue to tax resources. That’s why Kensington Hospice is undergoing an expansion that includes new facilities, 9 new residential suites, expanded services and an integration of our community day hospice programs – making ours the most comprehensive single-site hospice in downtown Toronto and one of the largest in Canada.
